“ Great Sermon! ”
"Speak the truth in love." Yes, except - truth is inherently loving already. How do we know this? This is made crystal clear in the first epistle of John, where we learn that love is defined by what God does. Now someone will say, "God is love." Granted! But the direction is very important. We must never project our ideas of love onto God; it is He who establishes the only true and enduring love.
I remember back to a conversation I had with a friend years ago. I suggested to him that the mercy of God was revealed in His justice, and the reason that most apologitics fails in every generation is because it's always out of phase: objecting to legalism when the culture is hedonistic, and turning to the outward nature when people have a great inward awakening. What my friend said, though, was: 'it's both simultaneously', meaning that you need to be harsh on sin in order for mercy to shine, you need to be full of compassion in order to expose the external problems to the light.
I definitely agree that "the one who has been commanded to restrain" the evil one has been commanded to do so no more. I came to this conclusion eight years ago.
