Interesting lecture
Today I listened to these two messages and one by Dr. Michael Haykin covering the same subject. SID=6113125312 I have been a Reformed Baptist almost 30 years but I am finally just really studying our history. I am more familiar with Presbyterian and Congregational history, and this helped me to know why. The fact is, there is a dark period in our history in the 18th and 19th centuries. A lot of hyper-calvinism marked us, and the fact that the Great Awakenings were jettisoned by these pastors. The history is not totally discouraging. I have in my library a Baptist Magazine from the 1820s that seems sound. And we had great missionary examples, Judson, Carey, and others. But where is the experimental theology in the 18th century penned by Baptist theologians? Do we know anyone BESIDES John Gill, Abraham Booth and Isaac Backus? Anyway, Pastor Jeff, I have only had the pleasure of seeing you once, and that from the distance. Come back to Grand Rapids sometime! T M S
