Martin! If you would, open your Bible tonight to the 5th chapter of Exodus, Exodus chapter 5. It has been good to be here tonight. I've enjoyed the services thus far, and I always appreciate this hour of your prayer. Exodus chapter 5. Good to see those of you who are visiting, as well as certain of the members. So Brad's already mentioned, for those of you who have not been here this week, another son that will be here tonight for the first time that's been on my heart thus far, beginning Sunday afternoon and then last night, to maybe just preach along a line this week of just some foundations. And I used a verse of scripts in the book of Psalms on the afternoon in chapter 11 verse 3, but if the foundations be destroyed what can the righteous do? And dealt with just the importance of foundations and the fact that if you try to build something on top of a foundation that's not firm that it'll crumble. and if we're not careful, that we'll try to do that. And I'm not just gonna go through everything I dealt with last night. I know those of you who have been here, it's old to you by now, but I made the statement last night that many times we look at maybe problems and issues that Christians are dealing with, whether it's unfaithfulness, whether it's apathy, whether it's just being a troublemaker, whatever it might be, not being willing to be used of God, in our lives that a lot of times we look at those things and we always do is treat the symptoms and yet that all of those things if there's trouble in our lives in that way that most of those problems that we look at on the surface that really what they are symptoms of deeper foundational problems. I used the example last night, maybe going to the doctor and you got a problem and rather than trying to get to the root of the problem, the doctor would just give you some medicine to help that problem. I think I used the example of blood pressure, maybe you have high blood pressure and you go there, they'll give you a pill to bring it down and yet there's something that's causing that and it's good if you can get to the root of the problem and many times when we do that, the symptoms will disappear. They will take care of themselves. And so what we're looking at this week is dealing with maybe foundation repair, fixing some of those problems, fixing some of those foundational issues. And last night we dealt with the thought of reverence toward God. And I believe that's certainly something that's very foundational. We need to have the proper attitude toward God and who he is. And we fail to have that attitude when we try to bring God down to our level. then we are going to certainly come up short in many ways in our Christian walk. And we want to move from that tonight and go a step further. And I want to read a passage of scripture here, just a couple of verses in all I'm going to read here in the book of Exodus chapter 5. Now, I think we know the context of this, that the children of Israel have been down in Egypt for several hundred years by this time. that Joseph was a hero down there to start with. They came down there with great fanfare, and yet, as time has gone on, that Joseph's been forgotten about. The Pharaoh at this time, that he's afraid that the Jewish people, because they're multiplying so quickly, that they'll go to war, and they'll turn against them, and they'll overthrow them, and he begins to do things to try to stem the tide of his population growth. Yet the statement is made, I read it this morning, that the more that they afflicted him, The more they grew. That ought to be the case with us as we go through afflictions in life that we ought to grow in the Lord. I believe the psalmist made the statement before I was afflicted, I went astray. But now that I have cleaned under thy word, that's not just exactly how he said it, but that's what he's talking about there. It's done me good to go through trouble and through afflictions. And so that God's called Moses and he's commissioned him to go unto Pharaoh. And let's look at the first two verses of Exodus chapter five, and we'll try to take our thought at least verse two. It says, and afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, thus saith the Lord God of Israel, let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, who is the Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord and neither will I let Israel go. Now, I believe we can all agree to this statement that there is a lack of respect for authority in the society in which we live in, is there not? And that's in every facet of society, it's in the home. It just blew my mind when I was teaching school of students that, I dealt with this some last night, trying to even lay a foundation in the classroom, There would be times that students that would be respectful would sit there and never give me any problems in the classroom. And I would see them maybe at the ball game on Friday night, or I would see them in town and see the way that they were talking to their parents, as if they were the ones in charge. That there was very little respect for their own parents. We see that on every hand. Those in law enforcement, I'm sure that they see a lack of respect toward our law enforcement. And I tell you what, we need to pray for those folks. I'm so thankful for it. I appreciate the work that they do. We need to teach our children certainly to respect them. We see it in the workplace. There's a lack of respect for the employers by the employee. We see it in the sporting world. I try to use a lot of sporting examples. I like sports, and I know probably a lot of you do. Because there's such a lack of respect for any authority that will be over them. You look on the baseball diamond, there's no respect for that man back there in blue. Look on the basketball court, on the football field, there's no respect for those men out there in stripes. The coaches have always got on them, but you see the players do it today. There's no respect for those in authority. Even the players, no respect for their own coaches. anymore. And one reason they're making 10 or 20 times more money than the coaches are making. And so they feel like that they don't need to respect them. I'm not gonna turn and read it this time, we'll turn to a few different scriptures tonight. In the book of Romans chapter 12, the Bible talks about the renewed mind that we are to have. And you go on in the chapters following that, it talks about that, what our attitude toward authority ought to be as the children of God. that we ought to be people who respect those who are in authority. And we may turn over and look at that in a few minutes, but all that authority, it comes from God. But let's go back and look at this passage that we read, that in verse one, that Moses went to Pharaoh and Moses and Aaron, and notice the statement that's made, that they didn't go in and say, here's what we want you to do, Pharaoh. This is coming from us. But they went in and said, thus saith the Lord God of Israel. We're coming to you with a message from the Almighty God. And their message was, this is what God was speaking to Pharaoh. Let my people go. You turn them loose. You give them their freedom. You let them go. So they may hold a feast under me in the wilderness. And I want to take our thought from the question that Pharaoh asked in verse two. And Pharaoh said, who is the Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? There's two ways that you can look at this question that Pharaoh asked. And I'm going to give you my thoughts on it. You may say, well, Pharaoh, he had no idea that was a God. And he said that, what right do you have to come in and this one that I don't even know about, that you're telling me that he has commanded me as the king of Egypt as a Pharaoh to let them go. I don't know who you're talking about, I don't know who he is. I look at it a different way. I believe basically what Pharaoh was saying here is this. What authority does he have to tell me what to do? He must not realize who I am. Nobody tells me what to do. I'm the most powerful man in the world. I'm the Pharaoh. He has no business trying to tell me what to do. The foundation that I want to look at tonight, you probably already know where I'm going, but I want us for a few minutes to think about respecting the authority of God in our lives. Respecting the authority of God. Pharaoh's not the only one that's ever had this attitude, is he? There's a lot of folks today that would make the statement, they might not come out and say it, but they believe it in their heart. Who's God? Who is God to tell me what I can do or what I can't do or what's right and what's wrong? Who is he to tell me how to live my life? Who is he to tell me that there's one plan of salvation? Who is he to do this and who is he to do that? Humanism, that's hard for me to say. Humanism. I heard about it a lot when I was a kid. I see it a lot today. idea that that I am my own God that what I say is right what I say is wrong I thought about the statement the Bible makes in the book of Judges that every man did that that was right in his own eyes didn't he if I believe it's right it's right what I believe is it may be different what you believe But you've got the right to believe what you want to believe, and you've got the right to decide what's right and what's wrong. And I don't believe there's any humanist in the building tonight. I doubt you'd be here if you are. But I want to tell you something tonight that that attitude's not new. Turn over in the scriptures, if you would, to the book of Isaiah. Book of Isaiah, chapter 14. This idea that I'm my own God. That's something that's been around for a long time. And you say, well, you know, I'm a saved person that, uh, saved people can't have the attitude that I'm on. I am my own God. We can't, we're not careful. Who's God to tell me what to do? Who's God to tell me what's right and what's wrong? Maybe he can tell me in this area of life that he, it's none of his business what I do in this area of life. Isaiah chapter 14, the very first rebellion against God that we read about in the scriptures, even before, I believe this was before that even the world was formed. We find here in Isaiah chapter 14, In verse 12, the scripture says, How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning? How art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations? For thou said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit upon the mount of the congregation in the sides of the earth. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High. I understand this is a situation of great pride, isn't it? It's also a situation of great rebellion. It's also a situation of a lack of authority for who God is. Satan says, I want to be the one to sit up there. I want to be the one to make the decisions. Who am I to be subordinate to him? Who am I to fall under his guidance? Who am I to be one who is under his rule and his reign? He said, I want to be in that position. When you go back to the book of Genesis, I'm not gonna turn there and read it, but as Satan would approach Eve in the garden of Eden, that he would approach her with, you know, basically this statement, did God really say that? He tried to put doubt in her mind, did he really say that? And then he said, well, did he really mean that? And then he said, well, certainly he's not gonna do that. What was Satan doing? He was denying or putting doubts in their mind concerning what right that God had to tell them what they could and could not do. He was questioning the authority of God. You go on a few chapters after that, and maybe the next chapter, and you find that those two brothers, Cain and Abel, that both of them had been instructed on the proper offering to bring unto God. And Abel brought that that God commanded. But what did Cain say? He said, I'm going to do it my way. That's exactly what he said. I'll do it my way. Who is he to tell me what is acceptable and what is not acceptable? And lo and behold, God gave Cain an example, didn't He? He said, just look at your brother, look what he brought. I accepted that. If you'll just take that example and you'll follow that example, He said, I'll accept your offering. McCain did not respect the authority of God. You go on and you find after the flood that as God told men to multiply and replenish and spread over the earth, what did they do? They gathered there in that valley and they began to construct a tower. Why? Because They rejected, didn't respect the authority of God. We don't want to do what he says, that we want to do things our way, and that we're going to build this tower. We'll be safe. I think what they were thinking, we'll be safe from any flood, any other flood that comes here upon this earth. And God looked down upon that. Wasn't no problem for God. In mercy, he confounded their life. In mercy. He wasn't punishing them. He was trying to bring them back. And then they were scattered throughout the earth. Go back and look at Genesis chapter six if you want to, if you follow along with me. There's so many scriptures and some even trying to prepare just so many different ways that you could go with this. And I'm not going to try to read every scripture, not dealing with the authority of God. In Genesis chapter six, we find one who respected the authority of God. in the midst of a people who rejected his authority, in the midst of a time that the thoughts of men were only evil continually. It says in Genesis chapter 6, in verse 22, that God had given Noah some instructions, and it says this, Thus did Noah, according to all that God commanded him, so did he. You see a different attitude, don't you? You see a man who respects the authority of God, that he has a right to tell me what I'm to do. He has a right to tell me to construct this art. He has a right to flood the earth and destroy and judge the world. He has a right to do these things, and that I'm going to respect that, and I'm gonna be obedient to that, and I'm going to do that. I'm gonna tell you tonight, that obedience didn't just flow out of some kind of nonchalant attitude about God, did it? It flowed from an attitude of reverence and it flowed from an attitude of the fact that I'm human and He's God and He's the authority and if He tells me to do it, I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it. Romans chapter 13. I said we try to maybe flip over there if you want to follow along with me. Romans chapter 13. Let's read some of these verses here. It deals with authority. I believe there's two types of authority that are taught in the scriptures. And one of those is intrinsic authority. And intrinsic authority is authority that it's a part of holding a particular office or being a particular position. You have intrinsic authority. And there's another type of authority that's taught in the scriptures, that's delegated authority. That's the one who has intrinsic authority that he delegates authority to others. And both of those authorities are mentioned here in Romans chapter 13. It says in verse one, let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. By the way, the word powers there, what does that mean? Authorities. Let every soul be subject to the higher authorities. For there is no authority. Every time you see the word power in these verses, it means authority. You can go look it up, don't believe me. There is no power, there's no authority but of God. So who has the intrinsic authority? God. Why? Because of God, right? Because of the place that he holds, that's exactly right. He's on top. Okay, there's no power but of God. The powers that be are ordained of God. What's the word ordained mean? It means they are put in that position. The powers that be are put in the position that they're in by God. Preacher, you mean to tell me our president is put there by God? He wouldn't be there unless God allowed him to be there. I'm not saying it's God's perfect will. but God could have stopped it, couldn't he? The powers that be are put there by God. So he's the authority, verse two, whosoever therefore resisteth the power of the authority, resisteth the ordinance of God. That means resist the place of God. It's the same word, ordained in verse one, ordinance in verse two. It's just different forms of that word. To resist the authority is to resist the place of authority that is ordained of God. And they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. That word damnation means a penalty, a judgment. He goes on in verse three, for rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will thou not be afraid of the power or the authority? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same. For he is the minister of God to thee for good. Let me stop there for just a minute. I mentioned our law enforcement. I believe this verse is very plain. that the authority they have given them of God. And notice what it says here, that they're the minister of God to us for good. What if we didn't have them? I wouldn't want to live here. It'd be chaos, wouldn't it? There's places around the world where there is no government. I've said this a lot of times. You know bad government's a whole lot better than no government. No government is anarchy. Those who are in the positions of authority, God's put them there for our good. He said, and he goes on to say, if thou do that which is evil, be afraid. He said, if you're doing that which is right, you don't have anything to be afraid of. But he said, if you choose to do the evil, he said, be afraid. Why? Because he said, they beareth not the sword in vain. I'm not going to jump off in this tonight, probably not the time or the place, but if you think about capital punishment, what do they use a sword for? To come up and tap them on the shoulder and say, you got to get better? What was it? The sword was a weapon of death. He beareth not the sword in vain. He's the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. He says, wherefore you must be subject not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. In other words, you don't just obey because of the consequences, but you obey because you have a renewed mind. Back to verse 12. But think about what we read. There's so much that you could deal with here. But these two types of authority, This intrinsic authority that God has because he's God. And then the authority that he has delegated unto man. I thought maybe an example to use to try to get it across. You think about a corporation. Who has intrinsic authority in a corporation? The president, the CEO, doesn't he? Because of the position that he's in, he has the authority in that organization. Does He choose to delegate authority at times? Yes, He does. He may give authority to vice presidents. He may give authority to managers or whatever that position may be, those positions may be that are under Him. And God has chosen to give authority. He's given us dominion over the animals, hasn't He? He's given us authority over them. We can read that in the book of Genesis. We just read about some other authority that God has delegated unto man. Isaiah chapter 45, Isaiah chapter 45. Yeah, Isaiah chapter 45, go down to verse 18. I think that's a pretty good description of why God has that intrinsic authority. Do you respect the authority of God? You respect that? You respect the fact that he's got the right to tell you what to do, what not to do, what's right, what's wrong? If you don't respect that, you don't have a foundation to build off of. Everything crumbles if there's no ultimate authority. If there's no Absolute truth. Y'all believe in absolute truth? Boys, I do. It's not relative. It doesn't matter. You know, we all seek to justify ourselves when we do something wrong, don't we? When I, you know, I had a good excuse. I had a good reason. In actuality, we don't. I tend to see things black and white. And that's just how I am. It's right or it's wrong. And you know, a lot of times it's wrong if the neighbor down the road does it, but if my child does it, it's right. It's okay. We're all guilty of that at times, aren't we? But right's right, wrong is wrong. Whether it's mine or yours. Isaiah chapter 45, verse 18. For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens, God Himself that formed the earth and made it. How is it that He has that intrinsic authority? How is it that He's in that position? Because He created it. He formed it. He made it. He established it. And it said He created it not in vain. He didn't just do all this for some empty purpose. But He said He did it to be inhabited. It's amazing when you go back and study the creation. He didn't make man first and put him into a world where there was nothing for him to survive on this. He put all that in place first, and when he had it all together, then he put man in it. He made it to be inhabited. I am the Lord, and there is none else, he said in verse 18. I have not spoken in secret in a dark place of the earth. I said not into the seat of Jacob, seek ye me in vain. I, the Lord, speak righteousness. I declare things that are right. things that are right. So he said, I'm the Lord. I'm the master. I'm the authority. And he said, there's none else. One of the apostles, when they were beaten and they were commanded not to preach and teach the name of Jesus, they said, we must obey God rather than man. They were talking to people who were in authority. But they knew that their authority was a delegated authority. And they knew that the authority that God had trumped the authority that the Sanhedrin had. We must obey God rather than man. In the book of Romans chapter 9, I'm not going to turn over there and read it, but the statement is made there that God is the potter And we are the clay. And the question is asked, let me put it in my words, does the clay ever turn around and say to the potter, why did you make me like this? Does the clay, does it back talk the potter? Does it try to tell the potter what to do? It doesn't. The clay is simply a material that's fashioned by the hand of the potter. And it's totally up to the potter to do what he wants to do with the clay. Jeremiah went to the potter's house, didn't he? And he saw that piece of pottery that was marred, that the potter took it and he made it another vessel. And he asked him, he said, why can't I do with you like the potter does with the clay? Who are we? We're the clay, he's the potter. We're the sheep, he's the shepherd. We're the servant, he's the master. And we go on and on with analogies such as that. The point is that he's the authority. Now listen to me or not, we live in a part of the country where independence is important to us and freedom. And I don't think anything wrong, I'm not putting that down at all tonight. I was in Wiggins the other day and saw a truck that had a flag on the back of it, and live free or die. That's about our attitude. Look, we fought a war 150 years ago over that, didn't we? Our pastor in Jones County, They don't say they live in Jones County. They live in the free state of Jones. And that goes back to that war I was talking about. Oh, we value that independence and that freedom. Nobody's going to tell me what to do. I'm not listening. No Yankees from Massachusetts is going to come down here and tell me how to do things. I didn't hear him make this statement. I can't verify. Somebody told me. kind of in the middle of this COVID crisis, that our governor was on one of the national talk shows. And they were really just beating him over the head pretty good about him not being as restrictive as some of the other governors around the country. And so he looked at him and he asked him, he said, have you ever been to Mississippi? No, sir. He said, let me tell you something about those people in Mississippi. I'm not saying all that's right or wrong. I'm trying to make a point. We value that liberty and that freedom and that independence and that self-reliant way of life. Just leave us alone. We'll handle it. That doesn't need to spill over into our attitude toward God. He's got the right to tell us what we can and can't do. He's got the right to tell me what's right and what's wrong. Because He's God. 2 Timothy chapter 3, I want to read you some very familiar verses of Scripture. Maybe two or three more verses and we'll close. 2 Timothy chapter 3. Verse 16, probably everybody here can quote this or come close to quoting. 2 Timothy 3, verse 16. All Scripture. What's your attitude towards Scripture? It's the Word of God. Is all of it the Word of God? You know, there's some things I wish were not in the Bible. That deal about income tax, you know, why do you put that in the Bible? You know, give Caesar what Caesar... There's just some things that you know just in the flesh. I just wish for different But he said it didn't all script every bit of Is given by inspiration of God It's God bring the one who's an authority gave And notice this it says it's profitable for four things Number one is profitable for doctrine What is doctrine? Doctrine is what is right? It's possible. So we'll know what is right The second thing is possible for it's possible for reproof. What is reproof? So we'll know what's not right He tells us what's right. He tells us what's not right. He goes on for correction That's how to get right it What's right? What's wrong or what's right? What's not right? How to get right? in righteousness, that's how to stay right. And where does that put us? It better put us in a position to believe it. It ought to put us in a position to be obedient to it. That the man of God may be perfect, truly furnished, unto all good works. Peter made the statement, 2 Peter 1, verse 20, he said, no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. Brother Brad, it really doesn't matter what I think. The scripture is authoritative. It is the Word of God. Listen to me very carefully. What are you saying, preacher? Are you saying that if I'm not completely obedient to the scriptures 100% of the time, that I don't respect the authority of God? That's not what I'm saying at all. Let me use this example. How many of you were 100% obedient to your parents growing up? None of us were. May I ask you another question? How many of you respected the authority of your parents? Raise your hand. You weren't always obedient, were you? But you knew they were in charge. And you respected them because of the position that they were in. That's how we ought to be with God. Not that we ought to strive to disobey. We ought to strive to obey in everything that we do. But to realize that, Lord, I want to do what's right. You tell me. You show me. You reveal your will to me, and He has through His Word. I'm going to give you one more example, and we're going to close. Book of Acts, Chapter 10. Acts, Chapter 10. I thought about this sitting up here during song service. I think it's a pretty good example. Maybe just sum up what I'm trying to get across tonight. There's so many examples, so many places in the scriptures, so many things came to my mind even studying it. Could have gone to, but... I want to just close with this, that Cornelius was a good man. He was a man who was well respected. And yet there were some things that he just didn't know. And he sought to know what God wanted him to do and that God would tell him to send men to get to tell Simon Peter to come. And we know Peter up on the roof and the vision that he's in a trance, I believe it said, and the great sheep was let down and all of those things. And the Lord showed Peter that he was to go to Cornelius' house. But what I want you to see in verse 33 is the attitude toward those people that day that came to Cornelius' house. And this is what I'm trying to get across to us tonight. What is our attitude toward the Word of God? What is our attitude toward Him and what He has said? This ought to be our attitude, verse 33 of Acts chapter 10. Peter said immediately, or Cornelius rather, immediately therefore I said to thee, he's talking to Peter, and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now listen to what he tells him. Now therefore are we all here present before God to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. Is that your attitude? I wanna know what God says. I wanna know God's will. I want to know what's right. I want to know what's wrong. It doesn't matter what I think. I want to know what God says. Because he is the authority. Oh that our generation, oh that our young generation, our children coming up, that they would respect the authority of God. If you can instill in them a respect for the authority of God, the battle's half won, isn't it? Just learn to respect God for being God, who He is. I trust that would be the case in our lives. Let's have a song. If there be anything upon your heart, you feel free to come while we sing. and I love both. I can't see. I want to take the simple message, Your Honor, and put some errors and blunders on my part. You know, the request that was made, I thank you for it. It's a noble request, and I pray that you could bless and strengthen it, and your will be done there. The Heavenly Father, I pray that we would recognize you as the authority, that we wouldn't be self-centered, but that we would be Christ-centered, that we would be Bible-centered people, that even our thoughts and our opinions, when they don't coincide with your word, that we would allow your word to be that authority. We strive to live lives that would be pleasing to you. We pray for those that might be here tonight. The sons say, I pray that they would I recognize the authority of you and the Holy Spirit in their lives. When that time would come, when you would convict them of their sins, that they would say, yes, Lord, and they would accept Jesus Christ and be saved. Good thing we prayed. I don't know, I'll just say, whenever the question was asked, the Bible authority denied it. Do we respect the authority of God? My quick answer was absolutely. I respect God, you know, in every avenue of my life, I feel like I respect God. But then I got to thinking about Job, and I guess my mind wandered off just a moment there, but I got thinking about Job and the things that he went through. You know, when you think about a foundation, really, You don't know a lot about the foundation until it's up against opposition. It's up against the wind. When that wind beats, whether or not that foundation holds or not. I thought about Job and how Satan threw everything he could throw at him. The thought of losing your family, losing your children, the thought of losing everything you have. It's one thing to honor God when things are going good. It's another thing when it looks like he's allowing things to happen And God does allow things to happen to shake us at times. And then his wife, and what got me, his wife comes in, and she asks the question, how long will you maintain your integrity? Why don't you just curse God and die? That had to just shake him at his very core. You talk about shake a foundation. It seemed like that would shake your foundation. But he stood there, and he said, I speak as one of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? And all of us did not joke sin with his lips. You know, he certainly had a sure foundation that he respected the Lord. He respected that authority. You know, God give us everything we have. He has every right to take it away from us. And I'm still going to maintain my integrity. I'm still going to respect his authority. You pray for me that I can be like that, that I can respect the authority that God has. It wouldn't matter who denies it, or who changes their mind, or who cracks under the pressure. But I can just keep on keeping on. I know Brother Mike, that's his saying. He says that to me like about every Sunday. You keep on keeping on. And you don't know how much I appreciate those words. We just need to keep on keeping on. no matter what comes our way. We do appreciate the wonderful message and the way it was brought out. It's so simple, such a simple message, and yet it's just amazing to hear. Appreciate it. Appreciate each minister that would come this way, each and every member that you've come to be faithful. Would there be some more to announce? OK, if not, 264. you
