Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves. Philippians 2.3 Welcome to today's offering from Precious Remedies to Encourage the Soul. Our few-minute sermon is titled, Selfie Selfishness. Then glory, or the term selfish ambition, is a one-of-a-kind word found no place else in the Bible and is pronounced in the original canodoxia, meaning empty glory or empty pride, or it can be said to be a valueless opinion of one's self. In his letter to the church in Philippi, in chapter 2, Paul focuses on unity. Notice he wanted them to be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord and of one mind, after which he commands them to avoid acting in grievance or dishonesty. His goal was to remove their attention from self to others. In this, Paul takes a slightly different approach than Christ's teaching found in Matthew 22, verses 36-40, where the goal is that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. Instead, he first addresses the motives of wrongful ambition and pride, because when vainglory drives our decision, love and unity disappears. This King James word, Vainglory, is the warp and woof of our son. Paul is teaching that we Christians ought to treat the needs of others as more important than our own, and other people as greater than us. How can you do this if those of us that use Facebook, for instance, and similar platforms use them from a self-gratification promotion of self and self-interest. It's almost embarrassing. You see, by putting others first, Christians pursue a kind of humility that leads to a mutual love and unity. The emphasis is not on self, but on others. A difficult, but not impossible task. Now my prayer is that I didn't offend anyone, but hopefully that we've all paused long enough to look into a mirror when we want to see the most important person in our lives. Dr. WB Anderson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania gives us our closing prayer. He says, Father in heaven, we turn unto thee in the morning of this new day in loving gratitude for thy care over us through the past night. We thank thee today for home and food and clothing. for service to which thou hast called us, and for a measure of health and strength to serve thee, and for friends to love and serve, and above all, for the revelation of thyself through Jesus Christ our Lord. We pray thee to bless our home today. Lord, every one of us in the hour of temptation, keep our feet from the path of sin. Keep us from using selfishly any of the blessings that Thou hast bestowed upon us. Fill our lives with the joy and peace and satisfaction that comes from living in obedience to Thee. Cleanse and purify Thy church and strengthen it for the service for which thou has redeemed it. Empowering all those who preach and teach thy blessed word in our land and in distant lands as well. Fill thy church with a passion to finish the task thou has given it to do. Grant to everyone we love thy richest and fullest blessing for this day. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Now, to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to the power that works us. To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
