Father, thank you for the word of God. We do ask that we use our discussion in our study today of Exodus chapter 9 to encourage us and to teach us those things you have us learn. In Jesus' name, amen. Amen. All right, so we have a total of 10 plagues in the book of Exodus that are recorded. And we had one in chapter 7, we have over three mentioned in chapter 8 there are going to be 3 mentions in chapter 9 and then 2 more coming up in chapter 10 and in chapter 11 there is a 10th one the most probably the most well known plague is the 10th plague from the book of Exodus and John what would that 10th plague be? the death of the first born that's right the death of the first born anyone that didn't have the blood of the Lord they would be slain This is Grandma Gordon. Please read Exodus chapter 9 verse 1. Exodus 9 verse 1. And the Lord said unto them, Go unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, Let my people know that they may serve me. For he has now refused to let them go, and will hold them still. Go to John verse 3. Behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thy cattle, which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, upon the sheep. There shall be a very grievous moraine. And the Lord shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt. And there shall nothing die of all that is the children of Israel. And the Lord appointed a set time, saying, tomorrow the Lord shall do this thing in hand, in the land. And the Lord did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died, but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one. And Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not one of the children of Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go. And the Lord said unto Moses, All right, so the first plague if you remember was in Genesis chapter 7 verse 19 that was the water and the blood and And then we had the plague of frogs. After the frogs came the lice, and the flies, and the moraine, and in verse 8 there we saw the boils. But before we get to verse 8, let's look at verse 1 a little closer. Paul. In chapter 9 we had the flies, moraine, and we had the boils. Are one of those three the ones you were talking about, Paul? Do you remember the names of the pestilence you're thinking of, Paul? In Chapter 7, we had water into blood. I mean, pestilence is kind of a broad category, Paul. And so, I would think that the um the boils the marine the flies they're all the lice you know they're all type of pestilence but these are these are these are specific types pestilence oh wait i do recall one thing in chapter nine when i did read it um i know he brought about the hail yes what the hell the hell that that was in that was in this chapter we're still we're still gonna get to that in a little bit hail takes place in this chapter hail not brevard hill Not regular hail, no. Not regular hail. Regular hail is bad enough. But this was supernatural. We've got hail that God, especially, designed to be hail that would kill. You know, a grievous hail. Hail probably, I'm thinking maybe the size of a baseball. Perhaps bigger, perhaps smaller, but big enough that if you got hit by that, you would be killed. We'd kill you. What's that? Mingle with fire, that's right. Hail that's... Yeah, we'll get to that. Think about verse 18, what's that? 10 more verses, we'll get to that. Actually it's 18 more verses, we haven't even got to verse 1 yet. We get to the hail in about verse 18. But look at this Mrs. Grummer, I've got a question for you. What did the Lord tell Moses to say to Pharaoh? That his people go. That's right, he said let my people go. Now again, who are the people of the Lord? Jacob who are the people of the Lord the Israelites the Israelites and What's something we know about the Israelites John Many times the disobedient people, you know Rebellious and people that went astray much of the time. That's right. They were very disobedient rebellious they went astray and Bill who was the who was the The patriarch, names of the patriarchs of the children of Israel. Well, Joseph was one of them, even though he spent most of his life in Egypt. Right. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. Yeah, but those would be the patriarchs. Those are very familiar names to many people. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Joseph and his brothers. Moses. You know, and Moses, he's considered there. And And they're God's chosen people because God made a covenant with Abraham, a very specific covenant with Abraham. And he wanted him to, he wanted, and this has got us faithful to his word, got us faithful to his covenants. Now, Steve, let me ask you a question here from verse two. Who said, for if thou refuse to let them go, and will hold them still? Who said that? The Lord said that. You know, in verse two, Actually, it's kind of part of verse 1 and part of verse 2, so it's kind of tricky. Moses. And Moses is the one that said that. And again, Bill, a little bit to Moses. Moses. You have to go back to verse 1 a little bit to pick up the context of who said this. Tell me something about Moses. What do you know about Moses? Moses was the brother of Aaron. And you know what the sister's name was? Miriam was the sister. That's correct. Miriam was the sister. Yes, he was. Didn't he tell Pharaoh to leave the city? I think he stopped, he put his hand down, stopped the thunder. I'm looking at chapter 9. Yes. Who were his parents past away? It talks about him in... Moses' parents. Jacobite and what's the... Amram. Amram and Jacobite. Okay. I think they were discussed in chapter 2, Steve. Okay. Chapter 2. No, not chapter 1. Okay, they're not in chapter 1 or chapter 2 we have to wait till we get to the genealogies In chapter 6 in chapter 6 chapter 6 verse 20 you want to read that Tammy, please? And, uh, Elaine, um, this is a question from verse three. Uh, what was the Lord going to send upon the cattle of Egypt? Very serious brain. Sometimes some type of disease for the cattle. This is, this, this is the fifth, the fifth plague, the Marine Tammy. One of the definitions here is pestilence, so I'm wondering if this is what Paul is thinking of. Yeah, probably. Is that what you were thinking of, Paul, the marine? Yeah, yes. OK. Yes, it was. Because that's what you were thinking of, a marine. The marine is a pestilence for the cattle. Now, does anybody, well, first of all, does anyone that lives in the Midwest or west of the Mississippi own any cattle? It's Jacob. Does anyone that's west of the Mississippi? Anyone ever lived west of the Mississippi before? I've lived west of the Mississippi. Tammy has. You have? Yes, I have. Where did you live? I lived in Iowa. Really? I didn't know that. That's where you went to school, right? You're not from here? I am. But I was away for a while. In jail? No, no. He went to school. Okay, so I'm not I was thinking I was thinking it would be somebody else that wasn't a surprise in the room that we west of Mississippi Now tell me about cattle Jacob what nobody Okay, there's some across the street now You I'm trying to bring up the cattle in we are in our well Cattle is important for people that live in the country and rural areas. But for us, we don't really think about cattle. See, cattle was their livelihood. People would raise cattle, it would be their livelihood. They would raise it, they would sell it, they would trade it. Now, there's still people today that do that. They're already aging. They're aging, they do that. They have cattle. And so, when we have this marine, this plague on the cattle, You know, it's a very severe thing. It's attacking somebody's lifestyle. But that's what God was doing. He was trying to bring a point to the Egyptians. He wanted to show them the fact that He was God. He was God. So, Ma'amin, for a question from verse 4, what was the Lord going to sever? Between the cattle of Egypt and the cattle of Israel. Is that what I was looking for? Yeah, you can say whatever you want to say, but that's what I was looking for. Egyptian cattle and the children of Israel's cattle. And so the cattle of Egypt was going to die, and the cattle of the Israelites, that cattle was going to live. So he was trying to make a distinction. So you have this plague of this cattle, this marine, and it's only infecting, it's only attacking I'm not sure if attacking is the right word, if you could call it a disease. But it's only infecting the cattle of the Egyptians. And all the cattle of the children of Israel are free from this. They're not getting it. They're immune from this. It's something that God deliberately did. He caused it. He put this division between the cattle of Egypt, the Egyptians, and the cattle of the children of Israel. Now, Tammy, a question from verse 5 here. What did the Lord appoint? And what was the Lord going to do? He was appointing a set time, and He was going to actually begin the plague. Yeah, like you said, God was a very specific time. He said, on this particular time, This plague is going to come upon the cattle of the Egyptians. Now, Anna, this may be a bit of a redundant question, but in verse 6, what happened to the cattle of Egypt? They got very sick. Did some of them die? Yes, the cattle of Egypt died. But the cattle of Israel, they died not. They didn't die at all. Now, Mrs. Gramer, what did Pharaoh discover in verse 7? What did he discover in verse 7? Oh, that none of the cattle of the Israelites were dead. That's right. None of their cattle were dead. And he looks around, and the majority of his cattle are dead. What's that? Oh, all the cattle of Egypt was dead. Just think what that was like, all those dead... Yeah, all the cattle, all dead. All dead. Steve. Back to the Israelites. Was there one tribe or were there other types of Israels? Or is that defining all the... When we speak of Israel, there are some, it's quite often... Are there Israelites in the New Testament? Yes, they're mentioned in the New Testament. But when we speak of Israel, Israel, the children of Israel are divided into 10 tribes. 10, pardon me, not 10, 12. Why'd I get 10? Okay, 10 plagues. There's 10 plagues. There's 12 tribes and 10 plagues. 12 tribes, thank you. 12 tribes. There's 12 tribes of Israel. And so they're broken up that way. Anne, did you ever thought about that or not? I don't know, I thought you had your hand up, that's why. Why are they called Israelites? What's that define? What's that mean? Um, well, like, would you be a New Jerseyite? Am I a Jerseyite? Jerseyite. I'm a painter. You're a painter, right? New Jerseyite. New Jerseyite. A Pennsylvaniaite. Then you're an Ohioite. Ohioite? No. An Iowan. Southern Americanite. So, the reason why they're called Israelites is because they're the children of Israel. Children of Israel, that's why that's why Yes, that's right No, Israel is the is the father of the 12 Israel who is also name was before his name was Israel was a Jacob and Jacob had 12 sons And each of those well, we're gonna get you back in track each of those I was confused a moment to each of those 12 sons were the head of the 12 tribes and You know, Joseph was a son of Jacob, who has them change Israel. And so when we speak of Israelites, we're speaking of the children of Israel, the children of Jacob. John, the question from verse eight, what were Moses and Aaron to take handfuls of? They were to take handfuls of ashes. Handfuls of ashes from the furnace, right? Yeah. And this is going to be the beginning of the next plague Everybody read this this 9 and so forth, but that's 9 and maybe even 10, but mrs. Gromer go read 9 again, please Actually bill you read verse 9 And it shall become small dust in the land of Egypt And shall be a boil breaking forth With balm upon men and upon beasts throughout all the land of Egypt And they took ashes of the furnaces that before Pharaoh hung the sprinkled And this Magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils where the boil was upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians And the Lord hardened his heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them, as the Lord had spoken unto Moses. And the Lord said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thou hast saved the Lord God of Hebrews. Let my people go, and they may serve me, and that they be served. For now I will stretch out my hand that I may smite thee, and thy people with pestilence, and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, or show in thee my power. And that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. And as yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go. All right, so, Bill, from verse 9, what was to become of the small dust? They were ashes. It was the ash of the furnace. And so Moses In the previous verse, in verse 8, we have Aaron took handfuls of his ashes and sprinkled them toward the heaven, toward the sky, in the sight of Pharaoh. And it became dust throughout all the land of Egypt. And this dust caused boils to arise up in the flesh of all man and upon beasts. of all the land of Egypt. Now, here we have this boils. It's the sixth plague. The sixth plague that's coming upon the people now. Boils, I've never had any boils before, but it's something that's, I mean, you've had them before, you've had one, right, Steve? Oh, yeah. It hurt. It hurt. Now, what if you had several? It would hurt more than one. It would hurt more, it would hurt, the hurt would multiply. And so think about having dozens of boils. That's, that's, I think it's not just one boil, it's several boils. And everybody, this was, this was the, the ash from the furnace, Aaron and Aaron threw it up to the sky and it became dust. And that dust spread throughout all the land and caused boils to come upon the people that were living, that were living in the land. Tammy. Job chapter 2 verse 7 says so Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord and swore Joe with sore boils from the sole of his foot Yes Job did miss all this foot. That's To his crown and so Steve in verse 11 What happened to the magicians of Egypt? They couldn't stand because the boils were upon them. They couldn't stand before Pharaoh. They couldn't come before him because the boils were bothering them. So, Paul reminds me, who are these magicians anyway in Egypt? Who are these magicians? Boy, let me think before I remember it. Boy. Well, what was, name something you remember about him, Paul. Excuse me? Name something that you remember about the magicians of Egypt. Pharaoh, I was going to say Pharaoh, but I'm trying to recall now. I forgot, to be honest. Let's see, they were some sort of sorcerers that worked in the court of Pharaoh. And we believe they had some type of demonic influence because with some of the previous plagues, they were able to mimic those plagues. They were able to duplicate those plagues. But some of them, they were not able to duplicate. And here, the so-called magicians could not even come before Pharaoh to try to duplicate this plague. So Elaine verse 12 what happened to the heart of Pharaoh? Yeah, he hearted his heart the Lord had heart in his heart the Lord hardened his heart now so This is not the first time Pharaoh had a hard heart about some things God was God wanted him to let the people go so that They the people his people the children of Israel could serve him Tammy In verse 32, the previous chapter, it says Pharaoh hardened his heart. Yes, so in the previous chapter, we notice that, thank you for noticing, sometimes Pharaoh hardens his own heart, and sometimes God hardens Pharaoh's heart. Bill? That's stubbornness because of resistance to the Lord. It is. It is stubbornness, I agree. It is being very stubborn. He doesn't want to yield authority. Yes. Jacob, go ahead. That's right. That's right, Jacob. So Mom, who said in verse 13, who said, or rather the Lord instructed Moses to stand before Pharaoh during what time of day? What time of day was Moses supposed to stand before Pharaoh? In the early morning. In the early morning. In the early morning. And not in the afternoon, not in the evening, but in the early morning, he was supposed to stand before Pharaoh and tell them, let my people go, that they may serve me. And Tammy, for verse 14, what was the Lord going to send upon Pharaoh's heart, upon Pharaoh's servant's heart, the people, and why? The plagues upon his heart, that's interesting. It wasn't just an external thing. Yes, that's right. God wanted the Pharaoh and the people of Egypt to know that there was no other God on earth like the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. No other God whatsoever like him. And it's still true today. And I might actually ask you this question, Paul. You were commenting about this earlier. So you've said this word before. And Tammy found the word someplace in some of the definitions. But verse 15 is probably what you were thinking about earlier in the class. With what was the Lord going to smite Pharaoh? I was going to say with the hail. Hail. And yes, with hail, but there's other plagues. But this is what you were talking about earlier, Paul, and it's not specifically listed as a specific plague, but it's a type of plague. It's a byproduct of the plague, I suppose. Go ahead and read verse 15, Elaine. For Paul. It has the meaning on the bottom, though. Well, read the verse. For now, I will stretch out my hand that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence and thou shalt be culled from Europe. Because on the bottom it has contagious deadly disease. Okay, so my question for you, Paul, With what was the Lord going to smite Pharaoh? Elaine just read the verse That's right with pestilence That's right with pestilence and that's the you were talking about earlier in the class So this is this is something that God's in a smite and with and certainly all these things that happened before are These deadly diseases of so they're of a sort there are different types of plagues But the water the blood the frogs the lice flies the marine the boils all these things God's bringing upon the Egyptians because he wants the Egyptians to know that there is no other God like the one true God. Anna, this is a question from verse 16. Whose name was to be declared throughout all the earth? The Lord's name. The Lord's name was to be declared throughout all the earth. And Mrs. Gromer? Who exalted the Lord's people? Rather, who exalted himself against the Lord's people? Pharaoh. Pharaoh. What a horrible thing that Pharaoh did. John, I know you already read this verse before, Jacob. Go ahead and read verse 18, please. 18. Behold, tomorrow, at not this time, I will cause the terrain to rain great grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt, the foundation thereof, even until now. And John, next verse. Okay And gathered by cattle and all that thou hast in the field whereupon every man the beast which shall be found in the field The hail shall go down upon them and they shall die He that feared the word of the Lord among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses and And he that regarded not the word of the Lamb left his servants, and his cattle in the field. And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch forth thy hand toward heaven, that there may be hell, and all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every part of the fields throughout the land of Egypt. And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven, And the Lord sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground. And the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt. So there was hail and fire mingled with the hail, very great as such, as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt, since it became a nation. And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast. And the hail smote every herb of the field, and break every tree of the field. All right, so Jacob, what was going to rain upon the land of Egypt? Hail. Hail. What type of hail was this, John? A very grievous hail. A very grievous hail. Big ones. Big, grievous hail. And so anyone ever, Who could explain in normal, if you're a weather person, anyone in any way, is there a weather person here today that could explain? You're a weather person. And so first of all, just explain just basic rain. Explain it? Well, not in great detail, but just rain. I mean, what conditions do we need to have rain? You need the cloud formation. Okay. And so then we have snow. Elaine, how do we get snow? It's it's cold Okay, right Right does it so it's over then we have we have we have sleep Get freezing rain, but then what how do you know? How does hail forms TV? Good. I have an understanding how that forms I'm not the weather person. No, and can you explain to me how the hail forms? Hail in whatever grade that was. Okay. So Jacob has the answer. Jacob, go ahead. What's the answer? I wanted to ask you, are you a weather person? I'm not a weather person, no. Okay, I think I know a little bit about this. When the rain comes down and turns into sleet, if the updraft is strong enough, it'll turn it back around and send it back up and refreeze it. And that'll repeat over and over again until it turns into hail balls. And when they get too heavy, I had a car that I had just purchased and I didn't have a garage so I was living in Indiana and the hail was so big and so much of it came down that I had a lot of the body, quite a bit of the body of the car ruined. all dented in from the hail. And that's just our typical hail we have. This is the hail from God. And so the hail we have in our day can be very dangerous and can be harmful. Like Mrs. Grummer says, you could destroy a car. I mean, as far as dent it all up and bunch of little pings in the car because it's coming down. Let me see mom in verse 19 what was going to happen to every man and beast who remained in the field? They would the hail like they would people get hill killed by the hill they killed by the hill it's big hail I've seen I've seen the biggest hail I've seen is like maybe mothballs. Size of mothballs. Not that you necessarily want to be out in hail that's like that, but it does, it bounces around. But Tammy, verse 20, who caused his cattle and his servants to flee into the houses? Those that feared the word of the Lord. Those that feared the word of the Lord. Those that feared the word of the Lord. And it says something about the people who regard God's Word, the people who don't regard God's Word. You know, listening to different statistics about people today living in our country, some people have no regard for God at all. They don't believe in God, whatever that percentage is. The percentage is a growing percentage. But there's still people that do believe in God. But Tammy, in verse 20, Who caused... I just asked a question. I must ask Anna. Who left this cattle and servants in the field, Anna, from verse 21? The people that didn't trust the Lord. That's right, the people that did trust, the people that did not fear the Lord. So, it says a lot about people. how they respond to what God says. I mean, here clearly, what were some of the plagues they experienced before? Right before this hail, they had the boils, they had the rain, flies, the frogs. What else was there? Yeah, the water and the blood. And yet here, they see God's hand, and yet they don't regard His words. How many days do you think the plagues, each plague operated? That's a good question. I mean, each plague had a duration, each plague was different. There wasn't a uniform duration for each plague. So each plague had a different duration, it lasted different times. Sometimes we know how long it lasted, sometimes the scripture seems to indicate how long it lasted, other times it doesn't seem to indicate how long it lasted. For instance, this plague of hail, it doesn't take long. It could have lasted a long time, but it doesn't take long for the Lord to make his point with just five minutes or one minute. But we see there's more to come, more characteristics about this hail that's coming in the next couple of verses, or a few more characteristics of this hail. Yes, what's your question? And in verse 22 the Lord said after Moses stretched forth thy hand towards heaven and in 23 it says Moses stretched forth his rod towards heaven. It's just like the same thing referring to the same thing here. Well if you stretch out your hand like this and you have a rod in it, the rod's even going to go higher. So you're probably stretching out both. Right. I mean, if it's, um, you know, like the Tammy's observation is even, even if he's, he has his hand, he's holding his rod. He's still stretching his hand to heaven. So I would say, Mrs. Grummer, it is the, it is the same thing. It is the, um, he's doing both. He's doing both. Yeah. Um, and that, that's, that's who he was supposed to stretch. That's what God told him. He says, Moses stretch forth on hand toward heaven. And so he just had his rod in his hand and he was doing that. It was whichever hand it was, his right hand, left hand. But Jacob, do this for me. In verse 23, describe what the Lord sent forth upon the land of Egypt. It says here, the Lord sent thunder and hail and fire around. Up on the ground, lower rain hail upon the land of Egypt. Thunder. Thunder. John, what's thunder, John? A loud sound. A loud sound. Sometimes we have storms. We call them thunderstorms. What do we have? We have a hailstorm. A lot of thunder. A lot of thunder. It does. Something makes it happen. You want to describe what happens So so you're saying Jacob as a result of the lightning This is Go ahead. Light is faster than sound. So lightning comes first. In most instances, lightning comes first. Five seconds is maybe a mile, whatever. I'm not sure. What's that? John. You know how during the tribulation, Satan and the antichrist would try to mimic God by bringing lightning down. Mm-hmm. They said that there's working on a satellite up In outer space that brings artificial lightning on the earth. Oh, is that right? What are they trying to accomplish with that I wonder This is a guided lightning like a guided missile is a guided lightning today But we see we see this this is not one of those instances This is this is something that's the hand of God We have the lightning, we have the hail, the grievous hail, it talks about. And what else is there, Tammy? What's accompanying all this? Fire. Fire. That's right, we have fire. We have this fire that's mingled with the hail. Anna, your thought. I just wanted to say, even if, I mean, people are things that are controlling the weather, I mean, God is the one who is allowing them to do that, if it is being done at all. That's right. God is still in charge. God is in charge. If we look at verse 25. Please, please do. And the fire ran along the ground. Your great-grandma weighed heavy weight. She was very afraid of lightning. When she was a little girl, in the cellar, they had cellars. She saw lightning run along the cellar floor and made furrows. And that made her frightened of the lightning a lot. Well, I can understand that. What do you mean it made furrows? Like dug holes? Like a trench? Yeah, it made it. After it was gone. I mean, it made furrows when it was there, but then when it left, the furrows were still there. dead things. I don't know how deep or anything. Probably not real deep, but she saw that. So it's just a dirt floor. I don't know. Most people get hit by lightning. Some of them are not directly hit. It hits close by, and they're standing near a wet surface of grass or whatever, and they get hit. Yes, that's interesting, yeah. Because they would be If there aren't any ways to work around, do we travel across? It's an amazing thing God created, the weather. It is. Lightning hit our house a few years ago. You have a lightning rod, Jacob? I guess so. It only ruined one computer and a TV set and a few light fixtures and phones. I've heard of houses burning down from getting hit by lightning. Yeah, they do. They can. They can. I was in a car one time, and we got hit by lightning, and it just made the radio go, and then it came back on. Jacob, did it hit the car? Hit the car, he said, yeah. And the radio just kind of made a funny sound. As long as I've been alive, I've never seen it strike something in front of me. Like, I've never actually seen it hit anything. What was your comment, go ahead. When we lived in, when Dr. Wade was taking Reg to look at Purdue, Yes. We lived in a barracks. There were three apartments in the long barracks, or the middle barracks. And Dad wasn't home, and I was home. The children must have been in bed. And I was sitting at the table. There was a storm, lightning. I don't know what it did, but it cracked. It must have been the apartment over here. It cracked. Maybe it was on a tree or something. And it was like I had been shaken. It hit me real hard. It weakened me. It was strong. And I didn't get hit by it. It was just somewhere in our neighborhood. I forgot about it until now. It was really... Yes. When that lightning hit our house, you could feel it all the way down your bones. Seeing it hit his house, yeah, it just shook you like hard. I think there's a part of Florida, like Central, where Disney World is. I heard that they get the most lightning. Yes. It's called the 4 o'clock Charlie. My dad lived in Orlando. Okay. And the storms would come in exactly almost every day around 4 o'clock. Okay. Thunderstorms. Yeah. It's all flat land down there. Right. I didn't hear what she was saying. It says that they get the most, I think it's somewhere like Sports Bay because it has to do with the upper. Atmosphere, like he said, Orlando, Tampa. That area of the country, in the greater Orlando area, they have the most thunderstorms, the most lightning and thunderstorms in the country. And Steve was pointing out the point. Right around every day, around 4 o'clock or so, it rains or thunders. You're familiar with that, are you? How it rains quite often in the afternoon in Florida? It can be raining on one side of the street and sunny on the other. It's just a real quick real quick rainstorm and it stops. It's nice and sunny and hot again Yes, Jacob what Okay, I wish comment Yeah, that's true. Yeah watch out for this convertibles. Oh When you disembark from your car, though, you have to be careful not to touch the chassis if it's been struck by lightning. Okay, so that's a good point. Don't touch the chassis if it's been... Chassis? Chassis. Well, don't touch the body of the car as you get out. If your car gets struck by lightning while you're inside, When the storm's over, you should jump out of the car. And then you should throw some clean metal against the car so that it grounds it. No, I'm not sure about the last part. When I get my computer set up, I'm going to look all about lightning. Oh, that's not going to be for a long time yet. But if we look at verse 25, notice what this hail did. And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt. all the woods in the field, both man and beasts, and hails about every herb of the field, and break every tree of the field." Just think of that, it broke the trees of the field. No, it was smoke, many herbs, hail is not good for vegetation. Where are we? Verse 25. So, let me see, I forget who I asked the... Four things, what were the four things? Four things, man, beasts, Let me see, Mrs. Gramer, go ahead and read verse 26 for me, please. Only in the land of Goshen, with the children of Israel, there was no hell. And Pharaoh said, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time. The Lord is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. All right, John, 28, please. Okay, in verse 28, And treat the Lord gracious enough that there be no more mighty thunderings in hell, and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer. And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the Lord, and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hell. that thou mayest know that the earth is the Lord's. But as for thee and thy servants, I know that ye will not fear the Lord God. And the flax and the barley was smitten, for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was full. And the wheat and the rye were not smitten, And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened Neither would he let the children of Israel go as the Lord had spoken by Moses. Now, John, who said in verse 26, in verse 27, who said the Lord is righteous and I and my people are wicked? Who said that? Now, Bill, what's the concept of righteousness? What does righteousness mean? We discussed that at length some time ago, and it's hard to remember exactly, but God is perfect. Because of his perfection and his all-knowing, he is considered righteous. God is righteous. He's holy. He's righteous. He has all these attributes. He's perfectly righteous. And Pharaoh was acknowledging this fact that God was the one who was righteous. and he and his people were wicked. You know, wanna add to that, John, any? The doctrine of righteousness or wickedness, either one? The righteousness has to do with the right standing with God, that God cannot look at sin, and God, by saying the word Jesus Christ, by the shed blood of Christ, which in relation to tomes, verses, we're able to have righteous standing, a justification before God because Christ's blood covers our sins that God does not see the sin anymore because of Christ's work on the cross. Yes, because God is righteous, Christ is righteous, the Trinity is righteous, then, you know, like you were saying, the doctrine of justification, God could declare a sinner righteous. Tammy, what's your, what's... Is the word justice a synonym? Yeah, justice is a synonym. That's right, justice, righteousness. Quite often, you know, sometimes there's small little distinctions, but yeah, justice, Just, rather just and righteous are very similar words. And Pharaoh acknowledged that he and his people were wicked. Now, how many people today do you think are going to acknowledge that they're wicked? Not very many people are going to acknowledge that they are wicked. And Steve, in verse 28, what did Moses, rather, what did Pharaoh ask Moses to do in verse 28? He had enough, he said. It was enough. He said it's enough, and I'll let your children go. He wanted Moses to entreat the Lord. Like you said, he said, it's enough. It's enough. I think it was bluffing, because I don't think he believed. I think what he was saying, he had enough, but he still didn't trust in the Lord. You know, I think Temporelli, I think Temporelli said it's enough and then he had a change of heart real quick. And so as all the hail stopped, all the fire was riddled with hail. I don't think so. I'm not sure if he ever believed. Because even after the 10th plague, Steve, he still wanted to go after it. Of course he did. But yeah, I don't know. He believed, but he didn't believe. He understood that this was God. It was the mighty hand of God. Jacob, first, then Anna. Go, Jacob. Yes, sir. I remember a verse, and I think it's to do with Pharaoh here, what it talked about when he had respite after he had respite. In other words, when the hand of God was off of him, he decided to go ahead and have a hard heart again. That's so much like most people would be like that. Yeah, like you said, rest up, rest up. Relief. Relief. Yeah, relief. That's the word. All right, Anna, what are your thoughts? I was thinking, what was I thinking? I don't know. About even if he did vote, perhaps it wasn't a belief unto salvation because It says that the devil also believes in trouble. That's correct. That's right. Now, Eleni, verse 29. Who said, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the Lord. Who said that? Paul, who said that? Moses. Moses said that. That's right. Moses said that. That's verse 29. Now, we're in chapter 9. Chapter 9, verse 29. and so Elaine for verse 30 who weren't the servants of Pharaoh going to fear The Lord now why won't they fear him? I mean they saw all this is mighty hand as money works, but they don't want to fear Paul. Well, you thought Because the Lord is powerful and he can he can do anything and be anywhere and everywhere at the same time and He was trying to show the Egyptians that he was the Lord. Yes. The Lord God. That's right. Mom, in verse 31, at what stage of development was the barley? Ripened in the ears. It was in the ear. Now, who knows anything about... It was in the ear. In development, it was... I think of an ear of corn. something we're more familiar with probably. The corn was actually coming out of the ear. It was developing. It was miniature corn at some point of development. So that's how the barley was. Now, anyone have any familiarity with barley or rye? You know any, Jacob or Mrs. Grummer, anything about barley or rye? Well, no. No? Down here for cattle, they grew a thing called maize. And it's like corn, but it's cattle feed. OK. You know something about barley and rye, Tammy? That's not good. That's a bad use of it, isn't it? Anna, what do you know about barley and rye? OK, let's leave the rye out of it for now. What do you know about barley? OK, well tell me about rye. Okay, I want to know what you know about right I'm interested Just a second there Anna's Anna's making a quick comment here Jacob So we've got to get that hooked up so you can hear her. So you're saying Eastern Europe uses rye. Here in America we use wheat to make our bread. We do, I mean... We use some rye. The point is rye is the most common type of bread in Eastern Europe. Okay. Or it's a common type of bread. What countries are in Eastern Europe? England. No, England is not Eastern Europe. Ukraine. Romania. Okay. Russia. I'm sorry. Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe. Poland. Lithuania. Latvia. Okay. I understand. It's Eastern Europe. Now, Tammy, question for you. We got a comment there, Jacob Barley. Yes, sir. On the piece of fresh fruits, the way you offer it was barley. They don't say that's as big as 23, but that's what they use. All right, let me switch with Tammy. See, I grew up in, a lot of my early life was in Ohio. Yeah, that's why I asked you the question about barley and rye. I don't know about barley and rye. Well, we'll talk about wheat then. I only know how they grow. Everybody knows. Okay, tell me what you know. Tell me what you know. I don't know much. What's okay? We don't have much time. So it goes like in a stalk. Corn grows, and then I think wheat goes up. I think it's little green things. I don't know anything about it. Do you have a comment, Amy? Well, I found that verse that Jacob was talking about. It's from the previous chapter, verse 15. So chapter 8, 15. When Pharaoh saw that there was rest, that he hardened his heart, In 815 right And a question for you for verse 32 What crop and not growing up at the time of the of the plague of Egypt plague of hail rather more crops? The wheat in the rye the wheat in the rice so we have the the US and use the wheat to make their bread. Eastern Europe uses the rye to make their bread, right? So we understand about wheat more so. The point is that they still had something left. Yes, they still had something left. Now, I know in Kansas, they grow wheat. They grow what they call winter wheat. You know, they plant it this time of year and they harvest it in July. There's fields and fields of this, as far as you can see. Now, do they grow wheat in Texas though, Jacob? It wasn't time for it wasn't it wasn't in the field to be destroyed So so It is that's right. Hi John. What happened when Moses spread abroad his hands into the Lord in verse 33? Okay, so It's possible that it was also raining with the hail. I'm not sure. That's a possibility. And Bill, how did Pharaoh sin more in verse 34? He stopped believing. He stopped believing, he hardened his heart, and went back to square one again. Let's see, just to kind of highlight, which we already know, but what, in verse 35, what went Pharaoh do? He was hardened again, and he wouldn't let the children of Israel go. He wouldn't let them go. All right, so a lot of things are happening here in chapter 9. We have the introduction of the three more plagues. So we have seven plagues in all that we've been discussing so far. We had one in chapter 7, two in Chapter 8, three in Chapter 9, no, there's three in Chapter 8, three in Chapter 8, three in Chapter 9, and one in Chapter 7. So Mrs. Grommer, was something you remember or learned from Chapter 9 of Exodus? Thought, observation, comment? Other than the plague that he said and how Pharaoh's fight continued to be heightened, you know, I was thinking, You would think so But they weren't they didn't believe did they they were they were they were stubborn Jacob some thoughts or comments you have about chapter 9 I Yes Yes Yeah, it's going to be really bad on that day, but I think this is just a brief preview. It is. I think there's seven out of the ten, the plagues that will be reoccurring in the Book of Revelation. That's right. You're right, Jacob. John, what thoughts do you have? That the servants of Pharaoh that feared the word of the Lord put their cattle into the houses while those that did not left their cattle in the field. Okay. That's interesting. It brought them into their houses, you know. they were concerned about their cattle. It brought them inside their own dwelling place. So thoughts you may have? Well, it reminds me a little bit of Ezekiel because the Lord is demonstrating what he does. He wants everybody to know of his works. That's right. He wants them to know because there's nothing that they can do themselves. but if they would simply recognize him for all the things that he has done, his creation, his plan of salvation, everything he's done for our benefits, if we would just accept it, then everything would be so much better. That's right. He just wants us to know truth. He does. Basically. Steve, how about you? Thoughts you have? Pharaoh just got tired of all these plagues. He had said enough was enough. I don't know if he believed, but he was arrogant, and he just said, enough's enough, and they couldn't deal with the plagues anymore. But then his heart got hardened again. Yeah. No, it was very sad, isn't it? Elaine, how about you? Some thoughts you have about this chapter? I think they still use weather, though, like God with the tornadoes and everything. It's supposed to make people... God has his hand in the whirlwind, that's correct. The tornadoes and the hurricanes. Paul, your thoughts? Well, sometimes, you know, even though we don't understand that the Lord can bring, you know, can bring catastrophe and tragedy, to try not only to let the people know that He is the Lord, but also to know truth, but also to, you know, to bring people together. I don't know if I'm phrasing that right. Yeah, there is, you know, God is sovereign, God is in control of everything. These plagues of Egypt, they weren't, we can't say they were natural occurrences. Yeah, sometimes these things occur naturally. We have frogs naturally, we have lice naturally, we got flies naturally, we have the moraine naturally, we got the hail naturally, but this was supernatural. This wasn't any old hail storm, hail mingled with fire. It was a hand of God was upon these plagues. The moraine, the flies, the lice, the frogs. All this was, Supernatural it was not natural Your thoughts mom about this this chapter I always wonder if Pharaoh who this Pharaoh was was he is uncle or was it his cousin? If he had not gone with the Lord, would he have been the Pharaoh at the time? I always wonder those things. Well, it's likely it's somebody that did not know him. Or if they didn't know him, they didn't have the death warrant signed against him. But yeah, it is interesting. Who was he? We don't know. We can look at some secular history, get an idea. It doesn't matter who he was. That's not the point. The point is that God's judgment was upon him, and upon the people of Egypt. Tammy, your thought. It's just interesting how Pharaoh influences servants, because Moses said, that I know ye will not fear the Lord. So, not yet fear the Lord. So, it wasn't just Pharaoh, it was servants, versus earlier, I'm referring to all of them. So he really influences the servants in a negative way. That's right. He did. Anne, how about you? Interesting chapter. This was? I think there was... I had a thought and now it's gone. Your thought escaped? It did. She's getting old. She's getting old. She can't be, what do you call that? Then if I'm old, then that's not good for everyone else. No, it's not. That's real bad for me. It's not, no. But you had a thought about Chapter 8, right? She is a senior. Jacob, go ahead. Your thought, maybe you're in, so I'll come back to her. Mr. Dan, we have to call the police to go retrieve that body. Yes we do. This is chapter 9. Any more thoughts, questions, observations about chapter 9 of Exodus? I do have a prayer request. Alright, what's your prayer request? Summer's cousin is it? Summer Wade is our granddaughter-in-law. I need you, and she wrote this morning, I need your church and whoever else you know praying. My cousin's husband is on life support due to having seizures last night. He has two little girls, Lily is four, and Riley just turned one. His name is Jaren Wilhite. My cousin's name is Heather Wilhite. Jared? Jared Wilhite's the second person. Okay. Well, let's pray for Jared. All right, Steve. I mean, John. Oh, I recently was laid off, so I'm looking for work. Okay. Right now you've been laid off? Yeah. Any warning? What's that? Any warning? No, they just called and say I was laid off. Okay. Just today or on Monday or? What were you doing? What did you do? I was being a salesperson selling direct TV at the Costco in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. Okay, so we'll pray the giant gets another job. Um, or he gets laid out again, get brought back and also pray for Jared Paul. Um, I got a few. One, um, in regards to, uh, my mother pray, you know, for my mother and everything, uh, you know, for her age, she's doing pretty good there. And, uh, uh, I want to pray for a part-time employer for me and Also, we know a dear friend who's also born again. He was on life support because he fell out of a tree and he fell onto a fence. And there's ribs, a fellow named Mr. Paul Pacini. He knew he's born again as well. And also, if he is- Is he blind? No, sir. I mean, no ma'am, no ma'am. Paul Pacini. Is he at the hospital now or is he at home? We don't know what happened. We- Has he had a recent fall? So, from what I understand is that he's down in Florida. I'm not sure when it actually happened. It must have been recently. And also, if it is, if it is the Lord's will that Dane and I will be able to, be able to adopt, adopt a child. Adoption. All right. Let's, let's pray. Father, we thank you for the the study that we had today in the Book of Exodus. We thank you that you are all-powerful and that you were able to comfort us in our trials. And we do ask that we be a comfort to Paul Pacini as he has suffered this fall from a tree and has landed on a fence. We do ask you to help him to recover from these injuries. We think of Jared and he's in this coma. We ask that we bring him out of this. allow whatever has caused him to, his body to shut down to be able to be discovered. And we do ask that you would give him his health back. Help John and Paul as they are looking for jobs. We do ask that they would provide the right job for them so that they would be able to have the necessary revenue to be able to meet their needs. What do you think of Paul's mother and her spiritual needs and also her physical needs. We do ask that you would also oversee this adoption process that Paul and Elaine want to be involved in. And we do ask that that would go to safety tonight and this week. And please encourage us with thy word. In Jesus' name, amen.
