chapter 1 and verse 21, and she, Mary, shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. The word Jesus means Jehovah. It also means Saviour. For he shall call his name Jesus, for it is he that shall save his people from their sin. Jesus Christ came to visit his people. He came to make an atonement for the Lord's people. And he did that. And he came to save his people, and the Lord's going to do that. Going to save his people. That's what he came to do. Now, in Psalms 107, verse 1 to 8, gives you a little bit more light on how the Lord brings his select people in. Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Nobody else. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy, and gather them out of the lands from the east from the west, from the north, and from the south, and by those old southerners we got in on this deal. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way. They found no city to dwell in. They went to hell suddenly. They're moving. They're pilgrims. They're strangers. They're seeking a city. Found no city here to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. Then, not until then, then is an advert of time. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. And he delivered them out of their distresses. And he led them forth by the right way that they might go to a city of habitation. Hebrews chapter 11 verse 10 said, Abraham looked for a city whose maker and builder is God. All that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of man. Now tonight as we come to bring this message to you on how God brings his select people in. We trust that you hear the message tonight with all of your mind, body, soul, and spirit, and that you hear it, and hear it well. So tonight, I want to point out that there's ten things that God does for his people. No man is saved nor safe till all ten of these things have taken their course. And I want you to see how it is that the Lord brings His elect people in. Now, the book of Ephesians is written to show you just one thing. It will show you that God has an elect people. In Ephesians, the first five chapters, God is dealing with this. said that God chose a people and that Christ died for that people and that the Holy Ghost will regenerate that people and bring them to Christ in saving faith and in redeeming faith. Then chapter six is that church in a gigantic Wherefore, take unto you the whole armor of God, that you might war a good warfare in that evil day. So the evil day has a twofold meaning in your life. Somewhere along the road you're going to have an evil day. There's going to be a time when all hell will break loose to you personally. And if you don't have on the whole armor of God, I have an idea that you'll be knocked down. Now God's child can be knocked down, but you never can be knocked out. You're able to rise to your feet and begin a new battle for God. Thou will come sometime in your life an evil day. At the same time it has a dispensational phase. It means down at the end of the age will come an evil day. And I'm convinced that we're facing that evil day. It's a day that such days has never been before. In Matthew 24, we're told plainly, then shall be great tribulation such as was never before and never shall be. And unless God shortened those days, no flesh would be saved. But for the elect's sake, God will shorten those days. So, how God brings his elect people in. Here are the ten things that God does. And I want you to see it. And it may be that you're here tonight that you haven't finally arrived yet. But, if you're God's child, He's got a hold of you. He's going to bring you in. and you are well on your way so you need to see it nothing to be disturbed about because we are playing in Matthew 1.21 Thou shalt call his name Jesus Jehovah for it is he that shall save his people from their sins now if it takes God 75 years to do it that will be alright however God wants to do it alright and if it takes God 40 years to whittle you down That'll be all right. But the whole thing is, when God lays a hold of you, he's going to bring you in to this New Testament salvation. And that's the thing that we're going to deal with tonight. And sometimes the leadings of God and the dealings of God are not too fast. And there's a great temptation, well, Paul guarded just too slow. He hasn't got my job done, so I'm going to have to help him. That's why humanism comes in. We have to get in to help God. God doesn't need any help. When he made this work, he never invited me to help him. He never even said anything to me, a second. No, sir. He made this own movement style. Did he consult you? Well, that's strange. From what sense you've done, it looks like he calls you to help him. God got ready to make the sun, moon, and stars. He asked no help. God got ready to make this earth. He asked no help. God got ready to make Adam and Eve. He didn't ask. Even the angels could help. Jehovah did. When God got ready to hang his son on the cross, he didn't ask for any help. The outstanding thing about Jesus Christ was this. He fought his battles alone. He never sought counsel from no man. He never confessed a sin for he hath none. He forgave sins. He moved in this earth in such a supreme way until the earth dwellers were amazed at this man Jesus. They said never a man spake like this man. He was God in human form. God got ready to hang his son on the cross. He didn't ask nobody to help him. Every battle that Jesus Christ fought, he fought it alone. Forty days and nights in the wilderness, he met the devil face to face, alone. The angels came at the end of the forty days, not to help the Lord, because they just came to crown him as victor. The battle was already over, and they came. God got ready to raise his son from the dead. He asked no help. The angel came by on the third day and pricked on the tomb and said, Mercy, been sleep long enough. Get up. And he did. He went back to heaven, asked nobody to help him. He's sitting right now on the throne in heaven. He isn't asking anybody to help him whatsoever. He's got the scepter in his hand. He holds the reins of eternity in his hands. And the Son of God is moving forward with deliberate speed. Now he has a people. He has an elect people. And the humanists hate election and predestination like a bulldog hates a rattlesnake. It could be because he's not informed and doesn't know. Or it could be something else. But we've got to leave that with the Lord. So, a good question is this. Somebody said to me the other day, Mr. Caldwell, how about election? I said, God saves all who want to be saved. There's nothing wrong with that. That's election. Nobody but the elect want to be saved. You see, the disciples never want to be saved. They never have wanted to be saved. They never will want to be saved. They hate God. They come here hating God. upon that way, that he got all the way through. So, if you want to be on the left, that's good in case you do. Nothing to worry about at all, but the glorious gospel is an atonement already made. You don't have to make it, it's already made. And so here are the ten things, ten in the Bible, a symbol of totality. Here are the ten things that God does in bringing his elect people in. And the first step is awakening. God gets ready to save you, he begins to awaken you. That is the awakening. Psalm 119 and verse 59, David said, I thought on my ways and I turned my feet under the testimonies. Now why did David think? It's Almighty God touching flashes of light. Where you're ever out in the night, a dark night and the lightning flashes, the light for a moment just flashes like that. And you can see where you're going for a moment. Then it goes out and that's where it flashes again. And sometimes those flashes come closer and closer. It's God moving with that person, awakening ministry. In Luke chapter 15 verse 11 to 24 I depict you the prodigal son. He left home with his part of the estate, went into a foreign country and wasted his substance and died as living. But there came a time when that son began to think. I have a son I preach on. Why did the prodigal son come home? There's no preacher down there, nobody giving a try. No revival, no nothing. Just God. God began to move on that boy. God began to move on that boy, began to touch him, began to awaken him. But he waited till he went bankrupt before he did. Spent all and no man gave him nothing. Had nothing to give him. There is on the devil's territory feeding swine and that's the worst thing, the most degrading job that a Jew could do was to feed a bunch of hogs. Because in the Old Testament the Jew was forbidden to eat pork. Now here he is feeding something he can't eat. But the city began to think and began to think They said, now what about it? In my father's house they got plenty and a spare. Here I am in this country, bankrupt, naked and cold, no friends. My money's all gone. I know what I'll do. I believe my father's here by me. Glory to God, I'm going to leave this hot pan and I'm going to start home. Now what caused that boy? It's awakening ministry. See? So, God awakens us to our lost condition. You couldn't just praise all in one. You'd go crazy. God awakens us to our lost condition. God awakens us to the great judgment. These thoughts begin to strike your mind. God awakens us to the certainty of hell. As a little boy, some of the things that I'd heard the old-time message preachers preach on hell didn't come back to me. Thoughts began to get a hold of me. God awakens us to our helpless condition. God brought me down to where I was so that if God didn't save me, I'd be sunk into hell forever. And he had to bring me down out of its end corner. God awakens us to our helpless condition. And God awakens us to the possibility of the unpardonable sin. Everything began to grip me. Reckon I've committed the unpardonable sin. Reckon I have. And that was the most terrifying thing that ever came to me. And I didn't know anything about the Bible. But where did that come from? It was God began to awaken me with the possibility that maybe I committed the unpardonable sin. All the horrors and the terrors have rolled over my soul. There is the second thing that God does in bringing his elect people in, and that's the withering. He begins to wither you. Isaiah chapter 40 and go 6 to 9, some verses I want you to listen to. The voice said, cry, and it said, what shall I cry? All flesh is grace. Now do you know anything that's more helpless than the weight of grace? Ever an animal in the forest eaten on that grace and the grace can't help itself. Got no protection at all. All flesh is grace. and all the goodness thereof is as a flower to feed him. The grace withereth, the flower fadeth, because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it. Surely the people are grace. The grace withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall abide forever. That is the withering ministry. God begins to wither us. And it begins to wound your pride. Here's a flower. There was a time when I was a businessman. Done business with two banks. Could have owed both of them. But I was doing business in two banks. A big businessman. But God began to wither me. He wouldn't let me prosper. And it started touching me here and touching me there. And I was filled with pride. I was a flower. But you know, that flower started dying, started withering. God started withering me, bringing me down. For I had lost my beauty. I lost my personality. God had to wither me, and it began to wither. God withers us with the law. He'll stay in the face with the Ten Commandments, and you go look in the 13, whether you wither. I mean to tell you, wither. God withers us with mercy. He withers us with grace. It's the goodness of God that leads you to repentance. Judgment never produces repentance. It hardens man. Don't you ever pray for judgment on a sin unless you want to go to hell. But God wouldn't pay no attention to your praying because he's running the show. But judgments never produce repentance. They harden man. All through the book of the Revelation when these judgments began to break in on this side, it hardens me. They blaspheme God more. So God began to whither you with the law, with mercy, with grace, and with providence. Providence is God causing something, what, to make you think. Had a wreck. I got out and looked at that for a moment while I didn't get killed. Accident, there's no accident with God. That's God shaking the very devil out of you. God calling your attention to this thing. He's with you. Then God withers us with the Holy Ghost. Set the wind north on the Christ-making method. The only way that one of our movie stars would ever get saved is that she sees the morning star. When she sees the morning star, All of which starve against the faith. She loses her child. That was the third step, and that's the quick knee. Now, the quick knee is where God regenerates you. Where God makes you alive, and where God gives you life. The sinner is dead. And all the moments of God has got to be in the physical, because he cannot respond to anything else. He is an alien, dead sinner. Dead spiritually. He's deaf spiritually. He's blind spiritually. You couldn't show a sinner nothing. You can show him physical something. But you couldn't show him spiritual truth in a million years because he's got no eyesight. He can't hear God because he's got no ears. So when God quickens him, then, now, he's quicker. And the purpose of the quickening is that his responsibility now will equal his ability. His ability will equal his responsibility. It's the responsibility of a sinner to repent and believe the gospel. But he can't repent because he's dead. He can't believe because he's got no faith. And God must quicken him. When God quickens him, then that gives him ability to equal his responsibility. John chapter 5 verse 21, listen to what the Lord said. For as the Father raises up the dead and quickeneth them, even so the Son of Man quickeneth whom he wills. And if he doesn't quicken you, you'll die in your sins and go to hell. That's in the hands of a sovereign God. Now he's going to quicken all of his people. And the fact that he's dealing with you is good news. That's very encouraging. So what you want to do, say, Yes, speak Lord, I serve thee. Yeal to God and walk with God. The Son quickeneth whom he will. That shows he doesn't quicken all men. He quickens whom he wills. I was in Lexington, North Carolina, at a Bible meeting. young preacher boy that was attending a certain Bible school in that section, said, Mr. Carmine, I want to talk to you. I said, come to the motel tomorrow, dear. I said, what's the trouble? He said, I'm troubled about the doctrine of election. Can you help me? I said, I don't know, I might. I said, I'm going to ask you some questions. Question number one, is the sinner dead? Well, I reckon so. I said, no, we got that to settle. Is the sinner dead? Not physically, but spiritually. Is the sinner dead? He said, well, the Bible says he is. I said, no, the Bible says that. Well, what do you say? Is the sinner dead? He began to tremble. He said, yes, the sinner is dead. I said, question number two, what can a dead man do? Nothing. I said, yes. Do one thing and only one. Outside stink. That's all a dead man can do, just stink. Question number three. What does a dead man need? Need some raw water? Somebody to hold his hand, trim his toenail, paint his lips up a little bit. What does a dead man need? Well, they said he needs a resurrection. I said, that's right. Question number four. Who can raise that dead man? He began to see the necessity of the election of God, in the election there wouldn't be nobody saved. He began to see it. And I said, it's in the hands of a sovereign God. And He saves all that want to be saved. I said, he said, well does God quicken all men? I said, my answer to you would not be what I believe, but my answer to you would be according to you. I said, God has quickened me, has he quickened you? He said, yes. I said, get up, tell the world about it. Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 1, And you hath God quickened, who were dead, and thought this is insane. Your salvation depends absolutely upon God. If God don't quicken you, you'll rot in your sins and die and go to hell and never win. That demands that salvation is of the Lord. Now we've got to come back and look at this thing. And that's it. That is the fourth step. And that's the drawing. When He quickens you, then it begins to draw you. Now where is He going to take you? He's going to take you to Christ. John chapter 6 and verse 44. No man can come to me, no man, that's a total inability. No man can come to me except the Father which sent me. Draw near. Talk about leaving somebody, Jesus will spit in God's face. You're not the Holy Ghost, you can't leave nobody, Jesus. That's the work of the Holy Ghost. He begins to move and awaken you, begins to weather you, weather you, and then he'll quicken you. All at once. Suddenly. You'll find yourself lost. How much? Oh my! You see yourself ruined in sin. That's when God quickens you. He gives you eyes to see. He gives you ears to hear. You can hear the voice of God now for the first time. No man can come to me except the Father which sent me to all him and I raise him up at the last day. Then in verse 16, 5, And he said, Thoufore said I unto you, that no man can come to me, except it were given him of my Father. He just shuts men up to this great truth. John 6, 37, Jesus said, All that the Father giveth me shall come to me, shall come to me, shall come to me. all that the Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me out of nowhere is caged up. How's he come? The Holy Ghost quickens him and brings him to Jesus. Do you like that? That is the joy. The Holy Ghost draws us to Christ. The Holy Ghost leads us to Christ. The Holy Ghost wins us to Christ. The Holy Ghost loves us to Christ. and the Holy Ghost attracts us to Christ. Christ becomes the most attractive person in the world. When you find that you're lost and going to hell without God and without hope, and God gives you a new heart, and nobody ever wanted a new heart, we have one. That's awesome. The fact you want a new heart is positive proof that God has given you one. And when God gives you a new heart, that binds Satan. Satan was on the throne of your heart. Now what does God do? He gives you a new heart and he's Satan's hit man. Oh my God, I thought, I've got to get out of this man. This man turned out to be a whore. This man's got a whore heart. My God, he couldn't stand that. That devil's ready to leave you and he will leave you. You don't have to cast him out. When God gives you a whore heart, that devil leaves. He can't stand whoring. See it? Now that's illustrated by this, Luke 15. When the prodigal son came home, the Bible said the father put a ring on his finger, shoes on his feet, a robe on his body. And he killed the first calf they'd eaten, and they're having a big time. And the father gave him a dancing heart to go with his dancing feet. Here he is dancing, praising God. And the elder son, out in the field, came home, heard music and dance, and that's what it meant. Keep him right with God, he's normal, that man. What does that mean, that our brothers come? And then he got mad, and wouldn't go in. It wasn't that he couldn't go, he wouldn't go. That's the normal way. They won't believe. They wouldn't believe if they couldn't believe. So the Father came out and entreated him, entreated him to go in. Now, how could he enjoy it in there? The only way in the world he could enjoy it in that was to be just exactly like the father and the son. He had to have a holy heart. He couldn't enjoy it no other way. The only way you can stand a drunk man is to get drunk too. And the only way you can stand a holy ghost man is to get in what he is, a youthful person. See? So there is the draw. The holy ghost will draw you to Jesus. And when it draws you to Jesus, He will give the ability to believe, to save you in the Lord Jesus Christ. And He'll help you to believe. When I came to Christ, I was so weak I couldn't believe. But the Holy Ghost helped me to believe. He didn't believe in front of me, but He helped me to believe. So like a mother with a little baby, The little fellow is too weak to get in touch with this bottle of milk. But she puts her hand on his head and lifts the little fellow up and lets him contact that bottle of milk and he goes to it. He doesn't need any instruction. He doesn't need any nurse to train him and tutor him. He knows exactly how to do that because he comes here. See? Automatically. You couldn't keep him waiting. Talk about time. He got in front of me. My God, you couldn't keep him waiting. You just believe. Why? Because you've got a new heart. God's given you faith. And so he's brought you in and you just believe. Now there's the fifth step and that's the granting of repentance. Now God must grant you repentance. You couldn't repent unless God granted it. That is saving repentance. Acts 11.18 said it's repentance unto life. He gives you life, now you repent. See, you don't repent. You get saved, you repent because you are saved. You're sorry that you're in the mess you're in. So, here you go. Acts chapter 5 verse 32 down to verse 33. It said that God raised Jesus from the dead and took him to heaven and put him on the throne. to grant, to grant repentance unto Israel and the Gentiles. You know what? To grant them repentance. That's not only experimental something, but it's a legal something. Grant you repentance. You couldn't repent a million years. That is, saving repentance until you had been made alive. So repentance is a change of mind. It's a change of masters. It's a change of manners. It's a change of mission. And it's a change of motives. Everything has been made new. So, you got a new mind. You got a new master. And I came to the Lord. I swapped the devil off of Jesus and didn't have to pay any boot. I don't want to. It's a change of masters. A change of manners. I didn't do like I used to. A change of mission. My mission was to sin and raise hell. Now, my mission is to tell somebody about Jesus. And it's a change of motive. You're entirely got a different motive. Because you are a new creature in Christ Jesus Lord. Acts chapter 9 verse 15 said to Ananias, just a common layman, you go and tell Paul. Well, I'll tell you a tale. that he's a chosen vessel unto me, to bow my name before the Gentiles and this world, for telling me he's a chosen vessel unto me, to do that. Then in Galatians chapter 1 and verse 23, they heard about Paul and said, this man that once destroyed the faith, now he's preaching. Isn't that something? The Apostle Paul moved to kill every child of God in the country. And if God hadn't converted him, he'd have done that. God would have had to convert him and kill him, wouldn't he? So God converted the Apostle Paul. This man that once destroyed the faith, now he is preaching the faith. All right? There is the seventh moving of God, bringing in his elect people in. That's the creating of faith. See, the sinner has no faith. He has a human faith, but no divine faith. See, all the faith he has is a human faith, and that won't save him. So when God saves him, I mean, quickens him, then he creates faith in his heart. Now, what is faith? Well, Christ is your faith. He doesn't give you faith, He is your faith. Hebrews chapter 12 and verse 2 says look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith he is your faith he is your life he is your justification he is your sanctification you name it and he is and as we read last night in Galatians chapter 1 that Christ was revealed in Paul not to Paul Christ was not revealed to Paul so he could accept him and reject him. Christ was revealed IN Paul. Inside of him something happened. He looked up to him and saw that he lived with Jesus on his own in heaven. So you have confirmation. There's Christ in his heart. But there he is. Now, what do you do, Lord? What will you have me to do? I raise Jesus Christ on the throne of glory. And God reveals Christ in Paul, that's salvation. God revealing Christ in the sinner's heart. He has to quicken him, bring him in, and that's faith. So saving faith is receiving faith. It's a believing faith. It's an acting faith. Faith is faith in action. It's an obedient faith. And it's a faith that commits all to Christ. 2 Timothy 1.12, Paul said, I know whom I have believed. And I'm persuaded that he's able to keep that which I've committed unto him against that day. Now in Acts 9.6, he said, Lord, what will you have me to do? In that statement, He admits it had been done long in the past. In that statement he said, Lord, I want to do right in the future. In that statement he said, I bow my knees to King Jesus for time and eternity. That's salvation. And nothing else is. Now, you talk about a sinner's heart. They say, now sinner, give God your heart. Why God don't want that old dilapidated wicked heart? Well, she's got one there. He never did say, Sinner, give me your heart. Father, as one said, Son, give me that heart. Son, he says, Son, when God gives you a new heart, can't tell you to give it to him. But he wouldn't want that old sinner's heart. And that old sinner never wanted a new heart. He had one. And as an old sinner had exactly the kind of heart I wanted. A heart I could sin, raise hell, and enjoy. And that's this matter of salvation. Then I come to the next step, and that's illumination. God begins to illuminate you. Illumination. He begins to illuminate you from top to bottom, and in that illumination, He is letting you see who you are, what you are, and giving you ability to equal your responsibility. Hebrews chapter 6 he deals with that matter of illumination Hebrews chapter 10 verse 26 to 39 he deals with that matter of illumination showing that you have been greatly illuminated and that illumination is to give light and God will give you no more light than that you walk in as we walk in the light as God's in the light we have fellowship one with another moving on in this matter of life, thou is the eighth step, that's giving a new height. Now if God don't give you a new height, you still would sink into hell forever. You see, this whole thing is of God, and God starts out to do it, and He will. Ezekiel chapter 36, verse 26 to 31, He says that, I will give you a new heart. Give you a new spirit. A new heart and a new spirit and a divine nature. And I'll bring you into your own land. That is, to the land of our forefathers. He's going to bring us into a new heaven and a new earth in due time. Giving a new heart. As I said a moment ago, nobody ever wanted a new heart, they had one. You want a new heart? Would you want a new heart, sir? That's because you've got one. See? That's positive proof you've got one. You want a new heart, sir? That's because you've got one. If you didn't want one, that's because you didn't have one. See? And it's God that gives you that new heart. You talk about assurance. That's the most wonderful thing, and this good news. See, it says God takes out the old stony heart and gives you a heart of flesh. A heart that you could love God. The sinner couldn't love God a bit more than a toadfuck could jump to the moon. See, everybody all loved Jesus. I don't know how foolish. That old sinner doesn't love Jesus. God don't want him to love Him. That's why God gives you a new heart. Then you love Him with God's love. with a divine love. He gives you a new heart, a new spirit, a new mind, a new will, and a new power. And when he does, you become a new creature, new creation. Second Corinthians 5.17, it says, therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. New creation, absolutely new. Give you a new mind, a new spirit, a new will, a new heart, a new conscience. Whole man is made absolutely new on the inside and makes him a new creature. In the resurrection of the coming of the Lord, He'll give you a new body. When He gives you that new body, then the whole inward man and the outward man will be glorified. God started out to save the whole man. And he's going to save the whole man, start out to save his people. Thou is the ninth thing that the Lord does, and after he does, you still not come in till he does the ninth thing. Now, this doesn't necessarily come like that, though it may. But it comes like this, all of them at one time. At the same time, it's coming chronologically in theology. So the ninth thing is the lifting of the white flag of peace in your soul. Now, do you have peace? If you don't, there's a defect somewhere. The peace that Christ gives can never be destroyed and can never be disturbed. Isn't that wonderful? Now stay with me, you'll have a stomach right here, but stay with me. The peace that God gives cannot be destroyed because Christ is your peace. How are you going to destroy Christ? And the peace that God gives cannot be disturbed, that is permanently. Because you can't disturb Christ. When God saves you, the Holy Ghost put him on the throne of your heart. And he is your peace. He is your life. He is your justification. He is everything. Now, this is true that a child of God can get in what we call sometimes a veteran state. That is, he can fall into sin or grievous sin. But his peace is not disturbed. He's disturbed. See, Christ can't be disturbed. You couldn't disturb the Son of God. There's no way that could be done, but you could. get in there, you could lose the assurance of your salvation, you could lose the power of God, the presence of God, but you cannot lose the indwelling spirit, because that's Christ himself. I've run into people that disturb their much soul. What they need is a man of God to take the scriptures and move forward with them and let them see it. And then, of course, There is peace. When God saves a man, He gives him peace. Romans chapter 5, verse 1 and 2, Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God. See, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. When we believe savingly on the Lord Jesus Christ, He gives us peace. Now it can be disturbed, and you get into hell. of falling to sin, not knowing what to do. When a believer sins, then he's to confess it.
