If I have a Bible with you this morning, I'm going to be in the book of Psalms. I'm going to be in chapter 107. Psalm 107 is the verses that God's laid on my heart for the morning's message. I'm still studying on the attributes of God, who God is, His character, His nature. We've looked at several things in the Word of God, and this morning, The Lord began to deal with me about this message on the goodness of God. The goodness of God. It's amazing when I begin to study on the thought of the goodness of God, how so many verses that I'd never really even tied together when you're studying about this and looking at it in God's Word. This Psalm 107, this Psalm 107 just ties it all together about the goodness of God. I'm not going to read every verse that I'm going to preach on, but I would ask you to stand with me in reverence of reading of the Scripture to lay our groundwork for the message this morning. And I would encourage you, if you will, just keep your Bible open to Psalm 107 because after the introduction of the message, We'll go back and read several more verses this morning to go with the message in Psalm 107, with this in mind, the goodness of God. Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. I'd like to just stop right there and say amen. Amen. Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. For His mercy endureth forever. Look at verse number 2. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. We're going to notice a theme in Psalm 107. And in this theme we're going to look at several things that comes from the goodness of God. And after each one in this chapter, you will find where he says we need to give thanks for His goodness. I could title this message, The Goodness of God. We could title this message, Thank You God. If we could title this message, if you've been redeemed from the enemy, if you've been saved, if you've been delivered, then we have got a lot to say this morning. And what we need to say is, thank you God. Amen? Thank you God. Let's pray together. Dear Heavenly Father, You've been so good to us. You've blessed us in ways that we can't even imagine. And Lord, sometimes in life, I am the worst to forget how good you've been to me. Especially in our lives as your children when trials come. Or when a hard situation comes into our life or our family or amongst our church family. It's easy in those times to forget how good you've been to us. And I pray this morning after we have studied Psalm 107, the very precious Word of God, that we will all be able to leave this property today and say, thank you for your goodness in my life. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for standing. The goodness of God. Now I know it's cloudy. feels just a little humid. I had somebody ask me, said, how long are we going to have services outside, Preacher Keith? I like what Brother Garrison said, till the first frost. How's that sound? We'll have services till the first frost, and then we'll move them in. When you get up that Sunday morning, you've got to scrape the frost off your window, go ahead and tell your wife, say, honey, we're going inside today. I'm enjoying this out here. And I'll even tell you this, I'm enjoying it so much out here, when everything gets moved back inside, I think we all just have outside services. It'd be a blessing. Outside services. But remember, our Wednesday nights are inside at seven. Starting next week, our Sunday nights will be inside at five. We should be able to scatter out far enough. If you're nervous about moving inside, we should be able to scatter out far enough that everybody will be okay. And we can even have some, if you'd like, you can sit up in the balcony. If you feel like you need to come and wear a mask, you do that. Just whatever makes you feel comfortable. Alright? That's what we're trying to do over here at the hill. The main thing is, is we're going to have church. Amen? Psalm 107. Let's look at the goodness of God. One of my favorite verses in all of the Word of God, and I learned this verse as a young Christian, is James chapter number 1 and verse number 17 where the Bible teaches us this. Every good gift, now we're thinking on the goodness of God now, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights in whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of term. We all need to be reminded that every good gift, and it ain't hard to figure out what every means. Every good gift, that means that has been given to you. And every perfect gift, that means to be bestowed upon graciously. Everything in your life, whether you realize it or not, and I want you to hear this, everything in your life, whether you realize it or not, if it is good, it is from God. Regardless of what you believe or what you think, every good gift is from God. Amen. When I began to study this goodness of God, it led me to some very interesting thoughts. Psalm 145 verse 9 says this, listen close. The Lord is good, it don't say to some, it says the Lord is good to all. Now, sometimes in our minds we say, well I know the Lord's been good to me. And I know the Lord's been good to some other folks that I know. What about those people that's not good? What about those people that's not doing right? What about those people, preacher, that's just mean? Psalm 145 verse 9 says, The Lord is good to all. Don't ever forget that. Psalm 100 verse 5 teaches us this, The Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth to all. generations. When you begin to think about how good God is, and you begin to think about the goodness of God, and you might even be sitting here this morning or listening or in the sanctuary listening, and you might even say this, and I have a hard time believing that the Lord is good to all. Listen to what the book of Matthew chapter 5 verse 45 teaches us. The father maketh his son, the S-U-N, the father maketh his son to rise on the evil and on the good. And the father sends rain on the just and the unjust. See, we need to realize that the goodness of God is extended to all. Amen? Now I want you to think back just for a minute with me, if you will, because I feel like maybe some of you are still struggling with this thought that God is good to all. But I want you to think back in your life when you was not saved. I want you to think back in your life when you was not living for the Lord. I want you to think back in your life where some of you was living not bad, but really bad. And I want you to think about the mornings when you got up and you went outside. Did the sun shine on you? If it did, say Amen. Amen. See, God is good to all. I would not get into my sin deeply. I've scratched the surface on it in some messages, but I would not get into my sin deeply, but I will say this to you. There was times in my life as a wicked, vile sinner, and the lifestyle that I was living, I would have to look back on those times in my life when I was in the miry, I'm talking in the muck, in the miry pits of sin. There are some times in my life that I have to confess and say, God was good to me. He was good to me. Can I hear an amen on that? When we're studying about the goodness of God, we've got to realize that God's been good to all. Job 25.3 teaches us this, Who doth not His light arise? When we truly understand that God is good, when we truly understand that God is good, it'll change our lives forever. The Jews have this saying that I read and I was studying about the goodness of God, and I want you to listen to this saying of the old Jews. This is what the Jews say. They say the days of rain is greater than the day of a resurrection. of the dead, for the resurrection is for the just, but the day of rain is for the just and the wicked." You ever thought about it like that? I hadn't either. The Lord began to remind me that if you have a man who is living righteous, who has been saved, and you have a man who is living wickedly. Now think about this. Ms. Joanne, me and you just made an eye connection right there. I want you to think about this. That farmer who is saved and living godly, and that farmer who is lost and living ungodly, both of those farmers, when they go into their field and they sow their seed, did you know when it rains, it rains on the fields of the just? And did you know when it rains, it also rains on the fields of the unjust? Did you know when that seed has been sown, that sun comes out on the fields of the just? And that field is also the sun shines on the field of the unjust. So there is not a man or a woman that has ever been born on the face of this planet that will ever be able to say, God has not been good to me. Man, what a testimony that is of the goodness of God. I know, there is no doubt about it, there will be people that one day will say, I don't know that God's ever done anything good for me. Well, you're wrong. Because God is good to all. Because that's who God is. God is good. When we study on the goodness of God. Now, here's the problem with the goodness of God. This is introduction, then we're going to get into Psalm 107. Here's the problem with the goodness of God is Romans 2-4. That's the problem with the goodness of God because Romans 2-4 says, "...or despises thou the riches of his goodness?" "...thou despises thou the riches of his goodness?" That word despises means to neglect. That word despise the riches of God's goodness means to think against. It means to despise. It means to the lowest opinion. It applies hatred to God's goodness. See, the problem is not that God's goodness is not extended to all. The problem is all does not recognize God's goodness. See, there are people who do not know God as you and I do, and they don't feel like they are blessed by the goodness of God. They don't even recognize it. They pretty much, if you was to tell them that the reason that they are where they are today is because of the goodness of God, they might even begin to curse you, and they might even begin to curse God because they despise the riches of God's goodness. Are you with me this morning? God's goodness. See, it's extended to all. But the Bible says there are those who despise the riches of God's goodness. It don't even just stop there in Romans 2-4 about despising the riches of God's goodness. It says they despise His forbearance, and they even despise God's long-suffering. Now here's the problem. The problem is not really that a lost man does not recognize the goodness of God. The problem is, is when a saved man does not recognize the goodness of God. That's our problem. There's a saying at my house that Ms. Watkins here in the front, she's a... I gotta be real careful what I say about Ms. Watkins. I got hate mail the last time I said something about her. I have a feeling if you folks ever vote me out, y'all want her to stay. I've got to be careful what I say here about my wife because, I mean, it was bad. I mean, I was beginning to worry I was going to get ambushed in the middle of the night. But there's this saying of Ms. Watkins that is a good saying. And she means it when she says it. She said, there is one thing, there is one thing that drives me crazy about people. She said, it really drives me crazy about you and our kids. I said, what is that one thing that drives you so crazy? She says, an ungrateful child. An ungrateful child. She said, there is nothing that makes me any more, there is nothing that makes me any madder. She gets mad. There is nothing that makes me any madder than for somebody to receive a blessing, for somebody to be good to somebody, for somebody to buy something for somebody, for somebody to do something special for somebody. And when you look at them, you can tell they don't even really appreciate what's been done for them. She said that makes me mad. Makes me so mad to see that. She said if I earn your clothes, you can at least say thank you. I've seen some of you wives look at your husbands right there. If I cook your supper, you can at least say, thank you. If I wash your nasty clothes, you could at least say, thank you. If I tell you I love you, you could at least say, thank you. See, the problem is not that the lost farmer does not give God the glory for the rain and the sun. The problem is that the saved farmer don't give God thanks and praise for the rain and the sun. The problem is not that the lost man does not recognize the goodness of God. The problem is the saved man does not recognize the goodness of God. If you're breathing this morning, God's been good to you. If you woke up with a roof over your head this morning, God's been good to you. If you've got clothes on your back and shoes on your feet, God's been good to you this morning. You see, so many times the Bible teaches us Romans 2-4, or despises thou the riches of His goodness and His forbearance and His longsuffering, do you forget all that God has done for you? You think probably right here we could probably just stop preaching Brother Ed and make an altar call and say, let's come up here and ask him to forgive us all for being ungrateful and unthankful children. Every single one of us are guilty of that. Amen? Alright. Let's go on. The goodness of God. When we get to Psalm 107, Verse number 1, the Bible says, Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. For His mercy endureth forever. I'm just wondering if there's anybody here this morning, would it embarrass you? Would it embarrass you this morning? Is there anyone here this morning that it would embarrass you? Just to say with a loud voice, Thank you God for being good to me. Amen. Don't ever be embarrassed and don't ever be shy and don't ever hold back to give God thanks for being good to you. You say, oh I couldn't, I couldn't ever, I couldn't ever speak up and say thanks in front of somebody else. Don't despise the goodness of God. Be thankful for His goodness. Not only does He say, O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endureth forever, but then it goes on and it says, Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. The redeemed is those who have been bought back. The redeemed are those who have been purchased. The redeemed are those who have been delivered. Delivered out of the hand of the enemy. If you've been redeemed this morning, say Amen. Then let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Let us say what? Oh, I give thanks for the goodness of God in my life. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, that I give thanks for the goodness of God in my life. I don't want to be an ungrateful and unthankful child. It's been too good to me to keep my mouth shut. He's been too good for me to sit here and go. Amen. Amen. You say, yeah, but every bit of the red's been licked off my candy. Well, ain't you thankful that God was good enough to give you some candy? Amen. Amen. God's been good to us. Okay, let's look into this psalm and let's just look at a couple of things here, if you don't care, that says we can see His goodness in our lives. verses 1 through 9. Still got your Bibles open? We've read 1 and 2, let's read 3. Gathered them out of the lands from the east, from the west, from the north, and from the south. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way. They found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. And He delivered them out of their distress. And He led them forth by the right way that they might go to a city of habitation. Look at verse 8. Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. For He satisfied the longing soul and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. May I say to you this morning that we can see the goodness of God through His deliverance. Amen? Through His deliverance. We can speak from verses 1 through 9. We can speak of the Jews. We can apply verses 1 through 9 to when Moses was leading the children of Israel out of bondage. But I want to make it more personal than that. I want us to look at verses 1 through 9 and I want it to speak to us, to you and to me, how that it was God that delivered us and God that helped us when nobody else could help us. Amen? So when we read these verses and we look at a couple of words in these verses, I want you to think about you when we read these words. When I see verse number three, it said the Lord gathers from all the lands. It says He gathers from the north, from the south, from the east, and from the west. You know what that means? It means to collect. It means to bring in. It means to grasp. It means to take up. How many of you are thankful this morning that it was because of the goodness of God that He came to you wherever you was at and He grabbed ahold of you and snatched you up this morning? Say amen. You know what that is called? It's called the goodness of God. When we begin to study these verses and these words, we get to verse number 4, when it speaks of the wonders to stray in the wilderness, to go astray, out of the way. It speaks of a solitary place. It means to lie waste. It means of a desert. It says that there was no city found to dwell in. It means in our journey, it was dry. In our journey, we was thirsty. In our journey, we was wasting time. In our journeys, we was in a lonely place. It speaks of so many things in these verses. It speaks in verse number 5 that we was hungry. It speaks in verse number 5 that we was thirsty. It speaks that our souls had fainted within us. It means that there was trouble, there was sorrow, we was weak. We was exhausted. And you know what God reminded me of? There's a time in my life, now listen church, there's a time in my life, this is exactly who I was. I wandered around in this world trying to find peace and I could not find no peace. I wandered around in this world and tried to find a place where I could find some safety and I never could find any place for safety. I wandered around in this world trying to fill this emptiness on the inside of me with everything that the world had to offer. I tried drugs. I tried alcohol. I tried pretty girls. I tried fast cars. I tried everything that the world had to offer. And let me tell you this, at the end of the day, When I pillowed my head, I was empty, I was dry, I was thirsty, I was hungry. I could not find any relief, but I am so thankful that the goodness of God come by and delivered me and saved me and changed me. Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness when He delivered us out of the places of hell that we walked in. Oh, that the redeemed of the Lord would say so. The Lord has been good to me this morning. Amen? I'll tell you what, I was praying God help me preach whether anybody else preaches and gets excited or not. God help me preach whether everybody else even smiles and even looks up. God help me preach if there's not one amen. Because I am so thankful this morning for the goodness of God in my life. He's been good to me this morning. Amen. Has it been good to you? The goodness of God delivers. The goodness of God delivers. And the only reason that I can stand here this morning and I can say that I've been delivered, it's not because of a good mama or a good daddy or a good preacher or a good friend. It's because of a good God. Are you with me this morning? It's because of a good God that I can stand here and say that I'm delivered. Verses 6 through 10. Let's read it together. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. How many of you remember when you was in that dry and thirsty land and you cried unto the Lord when you was in trouble? You remember that day? Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. And He delivered them out of their distress. And He led them forth by the right way that they might go to a city of habitation. Look at verse 8 and keep it in your minds all day long. Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. Oh, that we would praise Him for His goodness. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. The goodness of God's deliverance Not only that, verses 10 through 15, the goodness of God in our distress. Let me ask you this. Since you've been saved, you ever been in some bad places? You ever faced some things that you didn't know how you was going to get out of them? Look at verses, with me, 10 through 15, as we read in Psalm 107. He saved them from the hand of Him that hated them. Hold on, I'm sorry. Verse number 10. Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron, because they rebelled against the words of God, contemned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He brought down their heart with labor. They fell down and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bands in sunder. Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. The times in our life that we was in distress, that means trouble. It means a narrowness. It means a hilltop. See, there was a time where you were sitting in darkness in the shadow of death. You know what that represents? That means a dark, gloomy place. Have you ever been in a dark, gloomy place? Just a dark, gloomy place. He speaks of the affliction in the iron. You know what that means? It means times in your life that you was captive to sin. That sin had a hold of you and you couldn't shake it. In other words, he was bound up like in prison. Sitting in a dark gloomy place. Bound up in the prisons of sin. Boy, I begin to think about that. I begin to think about the people that I know and the people that you know. That Satan has grabbed a hold of them and bound them up. I think of people that's bound up by addictions. I think of people that's bound up by pornography. I think of people that is bound up with the things of the world. I think of people that is bound up and they feel like they're living free and they're living however they want to live but they do not realize that they're living in bondage to sin and they do not realize that they're not walking down paths of righteousness and light. They're walking down paths of darkness and despair. And I thought of the times that I've been in insane places. I thought about it in verse number 11. It says it gives the reason why in verse number 11, because they rebelled against the words of God. How many people do you know today that they are not following the Word of God? They're going against the Word of God. It's the reason that they are so bound. And it gives the results of that in verse number 12. It says, therefore He brought down their heart with labor. They fell down and there was none to help. You ever been in a place in your life where you walked contrary to God's Word? You walked contrary to God's Word? You turned your back on God and you walked another way? And you got to the end of your rope and you felt like, I'm all alone. There's nobody here to help me. I don't know how to get out of it. What can I do? What do I need to do? Who do I need to call on? You ever been there in your life? I have. I have. Verse 11 gives the reasons, verse 12 gives the results, but verse 13 gives the remedy. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. Can I say to you here this morning, please listen, If you're here this morning, and you're walking through a dry and a thirsty land, you've never met Jesus as your Savior, can I tell you this morning, you can cry out on a good God, and that good God this morning will save your soul. That good God will change you forever, and it's because of the goodness of God in your lives. Can I say to you this morning, if you're bound up, if you're struggling, if you're dealing with something, and you feel chained up, and you feel in darkness, and you feel all alone, can I say to you this morning, you can cry unto the name of the Lord, and you know what He will do? He will deliver you. He will save you. Right out of your distress. Right out of your troubles. Right here this morning in this altar. Why would He do that for me? It's the goodness of God in our lives. It's the goodness of God in our lives. Look at verse number 13 with me just for a minute. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble. And He saved them out of the distress. Look at verse 14. And He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and break their bands and sunder. I know I'm asking for a lot of help this morning, but I need it. How many of you could say, He has brought me out. He has fixed things in my life that nobody else could fix. Don't ever forget the day that He brought you out. You remember that Brother Grace and the day that he brought you out? You remember that Miss Cindy, when God brought your husband out? You remember honey, when God brought me out? Do you remember the times in your life where God brought you out and said, uh-uh son, you ain't going that way no more. You can't live that way no more. You're not going to turn against my God, my word no more. Because I love you and my goodness is on you. My goodness is for you. You can't get away from my goodness. And you cried unto the Lord and he reached down and he brought you out of that mess. And he broke those bands. That darkness fled away and the Son of God shined on your life and you was like, Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness in your life. Would it embarrass you this morning to cry out in front of all these people and say, God's been good to me? Amen. Amen. Don't ever be ashamed. Oh, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. God's been good to me. Brother Hensley, all the way back there in the back, sitting against the cars, I'm just wondering, Brother Hensley, you're sitting way back there, could you raise your hand to say God's been good to you? Has He been good to you? Amen. God's been good. Brother D, all the way up there in the corner, could you raise your hand and say God's been good to me? Let the redeemed and the Lord say so. Don't ever be ashamed to praise Him for His goodness in your life. The goodness of God delivers the goodness of God in distress. Well, let me send this to you. He says He saved them out of their distress. You know what that word means? Of course it means salvation. But it also means this, it means to open wide. It means to open free. It means to rescue. You know what else it means? It means to get victory. See, the things in our life that has robbed us of joy and victory, it's the goodness of God that when we call on Him that He gives us that victory. It's the goodness of God when we call on Him when He gives us that victory. I'm just wondering, wouldn't it be anyone that would be too embarrassed just to say out loud amongst all the people that surround you this morning, God's been good to me. Amen. God's been good to me. You read verses 17 through 22. You see the goodness of God that heals. It's the goodness of God that heals. Look at verse number 20 of this chapter. Verse number 20. When you read verses 17 through 22, it speaks of the healing hand of God. But verse 20 says, He sent His Word and healed them and delivered them from their destruction. Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. If there's ever been a time in your life that you need healing, if there's ever been a time in your life that you have been healed, it's not the goodness of the doctrine, it's the goodness of God. It's the goodness of God that come by and touched you that day and healed you and made you whole. Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness. One more thought here and then we'll close on the goodness of God. Verses 23 through 32 speaks of the goodness of God that delivers from danger. That delivers from danger. Let's just read these verses in closing together. Verses 23 through 32. They that go down to the sea in ships that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth and raises the stormy wind which lifted up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven. They go down again to the depths. Their soul is melted because of trouble. They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and are at their wits end. Let me ask you this. Have you ever been in such a storm in your life that you say or you have thought this? I am at my wits end. I'm done. I don't know how I'm going to be able to make it through another day. I don't know how I'm ever going to get through this one. God, I know in the days past you've helped me. But oh God, this storm, these waves, these winds, this water is higher than it's ever been before. And right now, if I'm honest with you God, I'm right now at my wits end. I'm at my breaking point. And I don't know how I'm going to be able to make it another day. Look what he says now. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble. and He bringeth them out of their distress. Look at verse 29. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves there are still. Then are they glad, because they be quiet. So He bringeth them into their desired haven. Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. The Lord delivers, and it's His goodness. The Lord helps us in distress, and it's His goodness. The Lord heals from our diseases, and it's His goodness. And the Lord delivers us from danger. Can I say to you this morning? It's because of His goodness. There is nothing that I preached about this morning, if you will notice. that happens to us because of our goodness. I'm not going to heaven because I'm good. I've not been helped when I've been bound up because I'm good. God did not touch my wife and heal her of cancer because, now don't get mad at me, because she was good. God has not helped us through our storms when we was at our wits' ends because we was good. He's done all of this for His children because He is good. Because He is good. Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness in our lives. Thank you, Lord. Miss Tina, come up and sing for us. I know this is a last-minute thing. I want you to come up and sing for us. Thank you, Lord. Because of his goodness in our lives. You can go right over there with Miss Vicki. That microphone has worked good for us. And what I want you to do this morning, if you're here today and you've never asked Jesus Christ to be your Savior, I want you to realize that because of his goodness, he'll save you today if you'll call on him. If you're here today and you're bound up in chains and in darkness, He can break those chains and get you out of that darkness today because of His goodness. If you're here today and you're afflicted with sickness and you're struggling, the Lord can touch you because of His goodness. And if you're here today and you're in a storm, you're in a valley, you're at your wit's end, you can call on the Lord and He'll help you today because of His goodness. goodness. If you've got any of those needs, notice the theme in this chapter was they cried unto the Lord. And he heard them and he helped them. So the first part of this altar call is this. Reach over and grab the person's hand beside you and say, we need to go and pray and get things fixed the way they need to be fixed. And then the second part of this altar call is this. Listen now. Do you despise us? The riches of His goodness in your life? Do you just kick those things to the side like they're nothing?
