proclaiming the gospel to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Shalom and welcome to the Everlasting Nation broadcast, a radio ministry of International Board of Jewish Missions. I'm your host Aaron Broughton and today I'd like to discuss with you a little bit more about a testimony of a Jewish believer in Jesus by the name of Paulus Cassell. Now this story that I'm sharing with you is actually taken from the book Famous Hebrew Christians that was written by Dr. Jacob Gardenhouse. And in this he actually mentions about 35 men, Jewish men, that came to know Jesus as their Messiah. Some powerful testimonies in here. And you can actually get your copy of this book from IBJM. You can contact us at 423-876-8150 or go online to ibjm.org. to get your copy. We'd be happy to get one to you. So with this in mind, let's now continue our story. We've talked about Paulus Cassell, who actually was a member of the Prussian parliament, the University of Berlin, some outstanding things that he did in his life. And he really was a great statesman for the Jewish people and also a missionary as well. So we discussed last time, we kind of finished off where he had become a missionary in charge of a mission to the Jews that was in Berlin in 1846. Writing of this period in his missionary work and of his ministry, Cassell states, this is his words, the special blessing of the church consisted in the regular exposition of the Old Testament. It has been my custom to expound the Old Testament every Sunday evening from the first Sunday I came into office up until the present time. It was the first time in Berlin that this was made a practice. There were, therefore, from the very beginning, heroes consisting of Jews and earnest Christians. Those expository sermons have been the greatest blessing and have specially united me to the congregation. Jews of all classes came both to his church and to his home to be instructed in the Christian faith. During his ministry in Berlin, he baptized 262 Jews from various walks of life, though most were well-educated people with literary interests and from learned professions. Cassell was in continual demand as a speaker in all parts of the country. Because his courageous and reasoned championship of the Jews was so effective and his lectures were so brilliant, many Jewish literary societies invited him to the lecture. When invited to lecture the Jewish clubs, he insisted that they name the subject, and he faithfully dealt with the theme decided upon. But when he was in the saddle, so to speak, as he called it, he outwes rowed to Calvary and pointed his listeners to the crucified and risen Christ. Writing to friends in England in 1887, at the time of the vicious attacks on Jews by the German anti-Semitic movement, he wrote, During the anti-Semitic agitation, many such journeys, for the purpose of delivering lectures, were most extensive. I had then become known through my defense of the gospel charity, even in circles which were not outwardly known as Christian. The meetings which were held at that period resembled more nearly an ideal which I aimed. A considerable number of people listened to my lectures who had completely turned their backs on the Church. During this period, his literary output was immense. His tracts and pamphlets had enormous circulation. Many Jews were led to Christ by these means, and many more were given a new view of Christ and his teaching. But because of failing health, Dr. Cassell resigned from his ministry at Christ Church in 1891, though he continued to preach and write as often as his physical condition would allow. In 1893, after a full and fruitful life, he passed peacefully to the presence of the Lord he has served so well among both Jews and Gentiles. In his book, Jewish Witnesses for Christ, the Rev. A. Bernstein writes of Cassell, his gigantic intellect, marvelous ability, and persuasive oratory and brilliant pen were alike consecrated to the service of the Lord and Master, and to the spiritual wherefore of his brethren. Sage, philosopher, scholar, author, preacher, and missionary, he was a king among his fellow men. His name will live immortal in the annals of Jewish and missionary literature. And even in the Jewish press, though it was regretted his departure from the Jewish faith, paid many fine tributes to Dr. Cassell's life, character, and accomplishments. Again, this is a good testimony for us to know to encourage us to keep living for Christ and spreading the gospel to both Jew and Gentile. This is again taken from famous Hebrew Christians written by Dr. Jacob Gardenhouse.
