We come to worship the Lord, but we're glad for the air conditioning. That is a blessing. It feels good to come downstairs. All right, we do want to worship the Lord this morning. We've got a business meeting after the service. Let's prepare our hearts to worship by listening to All May Change, But Jesus Never. It's hymn number 133. It's right there in your bulletins. Today, or yesterday, or any time of the day, the Lord's words are unchanging. Let us begin the worship service with the piano accompaniment. Piano accompaniment so so Amen. Well, we're memorizing John 15. This month's memory verse is John 15, 12, and 13. I'll say it, and then you can recite it with me. and then Pastor Chu will do the same in Korean. Oh, she's here, oh, she's here. Now I'm all in love with her, that's why she's here. This morning, please turn in your Bibles to Zechariah chapter 7. Of course, Zechariah, Haggai, and Malachi are the three minor prophets who spoke after the Babylonian captivity. You remember Jeremiah prophesied. the Babylonian captivity would be 70 years long. And of course, Judah fell to Babylon because of her flagrant, persistent sin against the Lord, her God. Now we know that Judah's history included some revivals, some good times under kings like say Hezekiah or Josiah or Uzziah. But this nation fell to great depths of depravity under kings who rivaled Israel's Ahab and Jezebel for wickedness. And you remember Hezekiah's son Manasseh, his wickedness sealed the judgment on Judah. Judah could look back on her history, all the way back to Abraham, to the Exodus, to the judges, to King Saul, and see repeated failures. One consistent message of the Scriptures is that our Lord is mercy. We often fail. We often fall into sin. Our failures may be great. And yet, God graciously forgives us. and restores us even after we fall and fail. So as we read Zechariah 7 and 8, notice in chapter 7 how God acknowledges the failures of His people, even in chapter 8, as he promises a good future. Brothers and sisters, if you follow him in this last week, You can have hope that God will yet be gracious and merciful to you. He has promised to forgive our sins. Praise God, He's never going to be finished with us until we are in His presence in glory. And on that day, we will finally be like Him without the presence of sin in our lives made like our Savior, Jesus Christ, our Lord. So we're in Zechariah 7, I'm reading verses 1 through 3. In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev. Now, the town of Bethel had sent Cherezer and Reginmelech and their men to seek the favor of the Lord, speaking to the priests who belonged to the house of the Lord and to the prophet, saying, Shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I've done these many years? Yes, let's start from the first chapter of the book of Zechariah chapter 7. On the 4th day of the month, the king of Darius, September 4, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah. Then the man of Bethlehem sent Sardisel and Regemmelech and their servants to ask the Lord for mercy, and to ask the priests and priests who were before the Lord. As we have done for many years, we will cry and repent for five days. verses four through six, then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me saying, say to all the people of the land and to the priest, when you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months, these 70 years, was it actually for me that you fasted? When you eat and drink, do you not eat for yourselves? And do you not drink for yourselves? Verse seven. Are not these the words which the Lord proclaimed by the former prophets when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous, along with its cities around it, and the Negev and the foothills were inhabited? Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying, Thus has the Lord of hosts said, Dispense true justice, practice kindness and compassion each to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor, and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another. Verses 11 and 12, but they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. They made their hearts like flint, so they could not hear the law and the words which the Lord of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the Lord of Hosts. They don't want to listen, so they turn their backs. They turn their backs and block their ears so that they don't listen. They make their hearts like a golden stone, so that the Law of the Universe and the Law of the Universe come to God. God is the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit, they don't listen to the words of their predecessors, so that great anger comes out of the Law of the Universe. We conclude the chapter, just as he called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen, says the Lord of hosts, but I scattered them with the stormwind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land is desolated behind them, so that no one went back and forth, for they made the pleasant land desolate. The king said, I called them, but they did not listen. I called them, but they did not listen. The wind blew them away to all the countries they did not know. No one came to this land, so they made it a beautiful land. So we've seen the bad past, now let's look to the good future. Chapter 8, verses 1 through 3. Then the word of the Lord of hosts came, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts, I am exceedingly jealous for Zion. Yes, with great wrath I am jealous for her. Thus says the Lord, I will return to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the city of truth. and the mountain of the Lord your host will be called the holy mountain. Verses four through six. Thus says the Lord of hosts, old men, old women, will again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each man with his staff in his hand because of age. And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its streets. Thus says the Lord of Hosts, if it is too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be too difficult in my sight, declares the Lord of Hosts. The wife of the wife said, an old man and an old woman will sit on the street of Jerusalem again. They will hold a stick in each hand because they are old. There will be a lot of men and women on the street, and they will play there. All right, so we're continuing our reading here in Zechariah, chapter eight, and we are midway through. We're reading Zechariah eight, verses seven and eight. Thus says the Lord of hosts, behold, I am going to save my people from the land of the east and from the land of the west and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem and they shall be my people and I will be their God in truth and righteousness. So, yes, that was the last verse that we'll be reading for today. All right, so let's continue our worship this morning with a word of prayer and we head our ways to the Lord. Let's pray. Don't worry, I'm not going to re-preach last week's sermon. But, last week we did see Zacharias 8 visions in Zechariah chapters 1 through 6. And of course in chapter 3, we saw how Joshua portrays how Jesus Christ, our High Priest, took our sins upon himself. And because Jesus Christ bore our sins, that virus, Joshua, who was all dirty, could be cleansed and restored to his priestly ministry among the people. And of course, the climax continues with Chapter 4 as Zerubbabel, the Davidic heir and current governor, was anointed and enabled by the Holy Spirit So chapter 4 has beautiful imagery. of how the Holy Spirit gives us light in that candle picture there. And that the candles, the lights, were supplied by olive oil dispensed straight from the source by two olive trees on either side and we know that the holy spirit in the bible is our illuminator the one who gives us time he is also are a mentor, the one who the anointing of the Holy Spirit consecrates God's servant for service. The point was in this, that all eight of the visions in these chapters were given to a people in need of a purpose. Even worse, they had no spiritual leads throughout their histories. So we're starting this morning by reading the introduction to Zechariah to see if this history of defeat, with God's invitation to see himself in human form, how that will affect us as we do this. In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the Lord of the Lord came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Aaron, the son of Enoch, saying, The Lord was very angry with your fathers. Therefore say to him, Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return to me, declares the Lord of hosts, that I may return to you, says the Lord of hosts. In August of the 2nd year of King Daryo, the words of Jehovah were given to the son of Jehovah's Apostle, the Apostle Zechariah. He said, I, Jehovah, have been anointed with the power of our passion. Thus says the Lord of Hosts, Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds. But they did not listen, or give heed to me. For your fathers, where are they? The prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words and my statutes, which I commanded, my servants, the prophets, overtake your fathers? They repented, and said, I have supported those who opposed you to us, in accordance with our ways and our means. So he has come. They said, Do not listen to them. The forefathers said to them, If you do not listen to them, you will go astray. But they did not listen to them and did not listen to me. I said to them, Where are your ancestors? Will they live forever? I will pray. I will pray. We would be grateful if you would speak to us. Give us hope. We are afraid we will fail. Help us to trust that our Father is faithful to His people. Thank you for your gracious, gracious to send you here. Zacharias' eight visions amplify the introductions, summons to seek God. We learn to trust the one who restores. To know that the one who judges the nations is righteous. We know that the one who sends away lady wickedness is faithful to keep every word he has said. We can trust the omniscient, almighty, sovereign God to save us and sustain us, body and soul. Today's sermon once again invites us as God's people to seek the Lord, who mercifully restores this life. Today's sermon is a message to God's people. It's a message to look for the Lord who has come to save us from our past failures. And so you see in the quote in today's sermon title is Zachariah, future hope despite or after past failure. Each one of us has to confess that we failed. So let us rouse ourselves by God's grace To serve God faithfully. As we serve, we trust our God. is good. His plans for us are good. Living resources, assurances, are done based on faith. That verse says, being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The one who redeems his child is not going to stop working on his child until he's done, until he completes his good work in us and brings us to His presence. With all that said, let's return in our Bibles to Zechariah chapter 7. And what this chapter is going to teach us is that past failure demands present genuine worship and trust. We start this chapter with the question, should we keep on mourning? And so God responds to the question with three questions of his own. And the first question, verses 4 and 5, well, why did you mourn? Was it for show or was it real? That's in verses 4 and 5. The last phrase in verse 5 is, was it actually for me that you fasted? And again, the second question, verse 6, when you did eat and drink, did you do that to glorify God or just to satisfy yourself? The third question, verse 7. Didn't God command mourning when things were going really well? So the question in verse three was, shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain as I have done this year? And the answer in verse 7 is in the former prophets. So the Lord proclaimed, and Jerusalem is impounded and prosperous, along with its cities around it. And then they got up and went to the store. So the race of the people should have passed through. was because they had sinned, not because they were poor captives to the battle. They were still experiencing God's blessing when God told them you need to ignore who you're sinning against. So, what was happening in verse 7 says, their spirit was happy. Their purity was blessed. That's because God is being patient about their punishment and their worship. And so we need to see not only the question with the question of the return, but the context here is that mourning for sin must accompany repentance. In other words, you don't have to reform. What Zechariah 7 verses 8 through 12 say is that if we confess our sin or mourn our sin, but continues to practice sin. We have to stop him. So what Sgarja says in Chapter 7, Verse 8, Verse 12, is, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned, I have sinned. With God's command to mourn sin, to repent of sin, comes a command to love your neighbor, for example. Remember God's command through Micah before the exile. Micah 6 says, He has told you, O man, what is good. What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God? So now, many years later, the Lord repeats himself. He repeats his command of old through the former prophets. Look at verses Zechariah 7, verses 9 and 10. Thus has the Lord of hosts said, Dispense true justice. practice kindness and compassion, each to his brother, and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor, and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another. Now, let's see. This is verse 9 and 10. The Lord said to them, I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to you. I have already spoken to Don't try to oppose the past, the past, and the future. Don't try to harm others. Don't protect the people. These words may remind you of the warnings of Amos against social injustice of his day. These are the warnings of Amos. These are the warnings of Amos. These are the warnings of Amos. These are the warnings of Amos. These are the warnings of Amos. Do you remember how the people of Anglistan spent their nights dreaming or scheming? scheming of evil things to do. And then the next morning, they do those evil things. There was no interest in justice. It was all about how I can get rich and take advantage of the world. And so as we're looking here at Zechariah 7, verses 11 through 12, the Lord is reminding these people. of their ancestors' refusal to listen to God's Word. Since they were 11, they refused to listen to God's Word. They stopped their ears from hearing it. They made their hearts stop playing. So they couldn't hear at all the words of the Lord of Hosts sent by His Spirit through the Lord of Hosts. Therefore, they were trapped by the Lord of Hosts. God said in verse 9 and 10. But in verse 11, they did not want to be impetuous, so they turned their backs and blocked their ears in order not to be heard. So the third part of this chapter is the conclusion where we see that God's past judgment was just as verses 12 and 14. God treated His people the way they treated Him. They ignored him. They refused to listen, so God refused to listen to their prayer. So the people had mourned, but just kept right on sinning. They put on a performance of sadness for their sin. They said, I'm so sorry, but they kept right on doing it. It's not true. So, the decimation of what we saw in the world now. That's what it was. So, to put it simply, the concept of leaving the decimation. The concept of leaving the decimation. People no longer gathered together as a family and a nation. They were dispersed to more corners of the earth. It was called that peace war. And even now that we have people back in this place, it's just pretty long. So you look at history, and the past is full of failure. God spoke, and people put on a performance, but they changed. But as we move on to chapter 8, we see that there is future blessing that demands present joyful worship and ministry. For these people with a poor temple, a simple temple, with their own heart, what is the future? In Zechariah 8, verses 1-8, there's this promise in the future, the Lord is going to return, is going to restore truth, righteousness, And He's going to be there. He's going to be the ruling presence of His people. I want to remind you that last week we were assured our God, Caesar, He's omniscient and He is sovereign. We saw that in the first and eighth vision there. So the Lord has His watchers patrolling the earth. So the Lord ensures justice is done to this people. He also ensures justice is done for this people. So God punishes his evil sons and judges those to hurt the people of Israel. Now in Zechariah 8, you see the Lord proclaiming, I am exceedingly jealous for Zion. Yes, with great wrath, I am jealous for her. Now that affirmation that the Lord is jealous came in the first vision in Zechariah 1.14. And in Zechariah 1.17, the Lord had promised prosperity, comfort, and His own presence. And you remember, Zechariah 2, verses 4 and 5, that the Lord promises to be the wall of fire around about these people so that Jerusalem no longer needs walls for defense. What does that mean? Justice? Righteousness? Rule within? Citizens are safe both from outside attack and unjust neighbors next door. What does this mean? It means that inside Israel, there is no problem with a fair rule, and there is no hostility from the outside. In other words, it's peaceful. That's what it means. Why is God jealous? Jerusalem is not an attractive Jewish country. Jerusalem belongs to the Lord. Now, as we read in chapter 8, verse 3, Jerusalem is the city of truth. Mount Zion is the holy mountain. The Lord says, I will return there, I will dwell there. And so in verses, chapter 8, verses 4 and 5, it doesn't matter who you are. If you're old, if you're young, we're all enjoying that shalom, that peace of God. So we've got the senior citizens with their staffs, and we've got the kids out there in the streets. So people live to a ripe old age and delight not only in their children, but in their grandchildren playing in the streets. Now, think about the person here. You don't have to study it on its own. And here, Saqqara is painting a picture that's like a garden of Eden. or later work is called Utopia, a place of perfection, right? Once this I did, and what do you think of it? No way, Jose. It can't be. That's impossible. That's the ideal. That's not real. So verse six says, thus says the Lord of Hosts, it is too difficult in the sight and record of this people and those things. So, in verse 6, God says, What is it that is difficult for God to do? It's impossible. It's impossible. And so the Lord brings back all his people from all directions to Jerusalem. And so the Lord is faithful and knows his people, righteousness and sovereignty. So the Lord is ruling, righteously. He is faithful to His Word, and He has great sorrow. So in the 8th verse, God calls them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands them, and then He commands If you believe in this, you will have faith in God. God will do exactly as you say. What do you think about turning the mess of your life into something new? God's people need to be strong and so to reap A blessing can be a blessing. So what do we do now? Today, you and I have work to do. In verse 9, these people have the temple rebuilt. Today. Today may be the day of small things. The day of small things. Take heart. Don't let the less impressive circumstances, the temple, the financial struggle, the hardship discourage you. God's peace leaves when we dwell in sin. If we keep on sinning, we will not have peace with God. But when we genuinely repent of our sins, when we return to the Lord our God, verses 10 and 11 says, we are peacefully restored. Verse 10 says, Before there was no peace because of enemies. Now, verse 11, I will not treat the remnants. So what does it say in the 10th verse? It says, I was not peaceful before. But in the 11th verse, it says, I will not be like a sinner to the rest of the people. Now, this is talking about some physical things, not just spiritual blessings. And the scriptures teach us that God generally prospers His people when they obey Him and do what He's calling them to do. God is still with us. God is still with the people of the world. Amen. And God will not prosper those who cheat, who steal, or who are lazy. But He does bless the work of those who serve Him with lust. not only in their worship, but also in their business. In the case of God, He does not favor those who steal, deceive, and deceive. However, in their work or business, they truly hide God's joy, As God's people, we must never fear. When we fear God, we can be bold as a lion, fearless as a bear, bare as a child of some sex. As you know, Seek to obey our God, and seek Him. We become a blessing to other people, rather than a curse to them. In a concept like this, there's a song. In the verse 13, God said, But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Don't fear, let your hands be strong. It's work. But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Don't fear, let your hands be strong. It's work. But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Don't fear, let your hands be strong. It's work. But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Don't fear, let your hands be strong. It's work. But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Don't fear, let your hands be strong. It's work. But the Lord promises, as they obey, I will save you that you may become a blessing. Now, the third part of this chapter is in verses 14 through 17, where we see God's people must be prepared. Now, the third part of this chapter is in verses 14 through 17, where we see God's people must be prepared. Now, the third part of this chapter is in verses 14 through 17, where we see God's people must be prepared. Verses 14 and 15 say, oh my God, the sovereign Lord has determined he is going to do his people good. Do you remember when God got stubborn? So, what did God do? He blocked it until the end. I determined to bless him. I determined to bless him. What will change God's good intentions to his people? Can the world Pressure God into pursuing his people. Nothing can separate God's people from the love of God. That is true, which is here. But verses 16 and 17 warn us that servants of the Almighty Sovereign God must serve Him with integrity. God refused to have Israel, despite being blind. I think of all the sacrifices God has made. They didn't sponsor Balaam. The same people, the same things.
