Al was born in North Carolina. He is married to the former Mary Madeline St. John of Fort Worth, Texas, and they have five grown children: John, Elizabeth, Catherine, Ben, and Paul. They are also the proud grandparents of fourteen grandchildren. Their home is in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.
