A Brief Testimony

"I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities..." (Psalm 31:7 KJV)

This Sabbath Day I am writing a brief, simple testimony of the Lord's goodness to me. The past several years have been full of ongoing loss, sadness, and grief for me due to a particular situation in my family. I have shed many tears and my heart has often been sorely troubled and my faith tried more than I ever imagined it would be. In addition to my private grief there have been the public calamities which we have all been passing through, and which seem to be constantly increasing. It has been a long time since I knew lightness of heart, and I have often reflected on the reality of the scripture, "Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful...." (Proverbs 14:13)

Nevertheless, the Lord Jesus is merciful, good and kind, and He is with me through all these troubles, sustaining and reviving me daily. "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me..." (Psalm 138:7) What more could I desire?

23 Nevertheless continually, O Lord, I am with thee: Thou dost me hold by my right hand, and still upholdest me.
24 Thou, with thy counsel, while I live, wilt me conduct and guide; And to thy glory afterward receive me to abide. 25 Whom have I in the heavens high but thee, O Lord, alone? And in the earth whom I desire besides thee there is none. 26 My flesh and heart doth faint and fail, but God doth fail me never: For of my heart God is the strength and portion for ever. 27 For, lo, they that are far from thee for ever perish shall; Them that a whoring from thee go thou hast destroyed all. 28 But surely it is good for me that I draw near to God: In God I trust, that all thy works I may declare abroad.

~Psalm 73:23-28 Scottish Metrical Psalter 1650

We are Covenanter Presbyterians who live in the mountains of Western Maryland.

STATEMENT OF OUR BELIEFS:

We believe the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

We believe the Authorized (King James) Version of the Scriptures to be the Bible translation given by God for the English-speaking people, to the exclusion of all corrupt translations which have followed it.

We believe that the whole doctrine of the Westminster Confession of Faith and of the Catechisms, Larger and Shorter, is agreeable unto, and founded upon, the Scriptures.*

We believe that presbyterian church government is alone of divine right and unalterable, and the model of this exhibited in The Form of Presbyterial Church Government, approved by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Anno 1645, is agreeable to and founded upon the Word of God.

We believe that The Directory for the Publick Worship of God, approved by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Anno 1645, is founded upon and agreeable to the manner of worship which God has appointed in his Word. We hold also to the exclusive use of The Psalms of David in Metre, approved Anno 1650(The Scottish Metrical Psalter),as the inspired hymn-book for the English-speaking people and as part of the covenanted uniformity in religion sworn to in the Solemn League and Covenant.

We believe that public, social covenanting is an ordinance of God, obligatory on churches and nations under the New Testament, and that the National Covenant of Scotland and the Solemn League and Covenant are an exemplification of this divine institution. We believe these covenants to be of continued obligation upon those persons, churches, and nations to whom they pertain.

We approbate the faithful contendings of the martyrs of Jesus, especially in Scotland, against Paganism, Popery, Prelacy, Malignancy, Sectarianism, immoral civil governments, Erastian tolerations, and the persecutions which flow from all the aforementioned abominations.

We believe in practically adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour, by walking in all his commandments and ordinances blamelessly.

*The Confession of Faith as approved by the General Assembly, Anno 1647, and the Catechisms as approved by the General Assembly, Anno 1648.
