Sermon:
Gambling: The Seductive Fantasy, Part 1A
Pastor John MacArthur
1
comment
“ William Ames and Gambling - A Correction ”
According to the following quotation the mention, in this MP3, that William Ames defended gambling is not correct, "On December 21, 1609, when Ames preached a stinging sermon on St. Thomas’s Day—an annual festivity at Cambridge which had become increasingly raucous over the years—and denounced gambling, administering the “salutary vinegar of reproof,” the college authorities had him taken into custody and suspended him from his academic degrees and ecclesiastical duties. After a brief period as city lecturer in Colchester, Ames was forbidden to preach by George Abbott, Bishop of London. In 1610, Ames decided to seek the freer academic and ecclesiastical climate of the Netherlands where he remained for the rest of his life." - http://www.meetthepuritans.com/blog/meet-puritan-william-ames Another quote on gambling: "It is … ordered that all persons whatsoever that have cards, dice or tables in their houses, shall make away with them before the next court under pain of punishment." - March 22, 1631, the General Court, Massachusetts Bay Colony Otherwise, a number of good points are made throughout this series of three MP3 messages. For more against gambling (i.e., Godless gaming) see the free MP3 http://ow.ly/nT2H30fOz6p. http://ow.ly/Lu4J30fOyRe

“ Jn 20:28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God! ”
This is ---more or less-- the transcript for the sermon, especially starting with the discussion of carnal "Christian" ¶ http://tinyurl.com/hqxp753 ¶ There's a fairly good correlation between the two, but not perfect.¶ 'Then they say this, “Yeah,” they say, “But MacArthur, what you’re teaching is human-works salvation.” They’re saying, “You see, you’re saying that before a person can receive the grace of salvation, they have to, on their own, acknowledge Jesus as Lord and no dead human being, dead in sin, could ever do that. And so you’re postulating a warped salvation. You have to repent. You have to acknowledge Jesus is Lord. Then you can be saved.” No, I’m not saying that. I’m not saying that at all. I’ll tell you what I’m saying. I’m saying what the Bible says, and what the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:3 is pretty clear: “Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says Jesus is accursed.” Now watch this one: “And no one can say Jesus is Lord except by” – what – “the Holy Spirit.” Repentance is not a human work. It’s a work that God does. Now what we’re saying is when God saves someone, he grants them repentance. He grants them the affirmation by His Spirit, that Jesus is Lord.'--John MacArthur

“ Not a slave of Christ? You're not a Christian! ”
This is ---more or less-- the transcript for the sermon---at least starting with the second paragraph, ¶ http://tinyurl.com/hqxp753 ¶ The sermon is later than then the the transcript.! There's a very good correlation between the two, but not perfect. ¶ [Billy Graham type evangelism]' . . . conveys the idea that salvation is some momentary transaction that secures forever but doesn't necessarily transform your life and does not involve acknowledging Jesus as Lord of your life and submitting your life to Him. That kind of thing is behind most contemporary evangelism. You listen. When do you hear someone say, "Are you willing to commit your life to following Jesus?" When do you hear someone say, "Are you willing to repent of your sin and bow your knee in submission to the Lordship of Christ? Are you willing to allow Jesus Christ to take over as King and Ruler of your life?" What you hear is accept Christ, receive Christ, make a decision for Christ. Now I want you to understand that this is a major issue because I believe, in my cases, what it creates is a whole mass of people who think they're saved but they're not. [!]' ¶ If you don't repent, make Christ your Lord---you are not saved!

Our Resurrection Bodies
Pastor John MacArthur

“ A Glimpse Inside ”
I have a longer sermon from Mac entitled "Our Resurrection Bodies". This particular version seems to be a thumbnail of that longer sermon. Bur then again, this isn't in the pulpit either. That doesn't mean it isn't any less important. Just briefer. More to the point, which is good. For those of us out there who don't have much longer here, this kind of sermon is very encouraging. It's good to have these things explained in detail and Mac is the best professor around. I have spent many, many hours in his classroom and have learned many, many things. For those who are seriously searching to understand this subject, here is a good beginning place.

Sermon:
Why Christians Submit to the Government
Pastor John MacArthur

“ Great Sermon! -- on Topic on Target-- and short! ”
There is a transcript for this excellent and--very short sermon--in PDF format ¶ http://tinyurl.com/hra4co9 ¶ John points out, "...Let me tell you something. The people who are leading our government are not the enemy, they are the mission field. What would you do with that mission field? The last thing you want to do is to turn them against you. In fact, this will shake you up, the people in authority are identified in verse [Romans 1:] 4 as a minister of God. A minister of God? That’s exactly right because they function within a divine institution...government. They may not know God but they function in a delegated way for God to provide a common grace of well-being and civil tranquility" ¶ 'So we do all we can to keep peace, to support the government, to be model citizens, to do good. Again, Robert Huldane, “The institution of civil government is a dispensation of mercy and its existence is so indispensable that the moment it ceases under one form, it reestablishes itself in another.” If you ever wanted to ask yourself how depraved man is, just look at behavior that is unrestrained. How long would it take if we had no police and no government for deadly chaos to disrupt the life of this city? That’s the human heart.' ¶ Disobeying, listen to start of sermon.

“ An excellent expositional sermon on eschatology! ”
Notice this is a fine explanation! ¶ http://tinyurl.com/zr7nzge (Transcript for this sermon) ¶ This sermon shows how book of Zechariah relates to eschatology! I will point out that most MP4 files can be played on android devices. Unfortunately, it's a huge file,. Even my tablet with Android Jellybean couldn't play it with the SA popup player. With my high speed Internet connection, I was able to play the video in the background while reading the transcript on my Windows desktop. This worked out well. ¶ If you can't play the video, and you don't want to try to download the video file, certainly see the transcript. It is excellent. It is a very good replica of what was spoken. I would hope sometime this sermon is put up as an MP3. ¶ John MacArthur from the sermon: "Again we acknowledge, Lord, that Your Word is supernatural, divine, heavenly, transcendent, that it tells us things written two thousand five hundred years ago that are accurate and we can see on the horizon, even now. Truly this is Your Word and the God who has declared the future is the God who can save us from the future judgment. We know that You save us only when we mourn over our sin and embrace Christ as Savior."

One doesn't get to see many comments about Bishop J.C. Ryle. I found Bishop Ryle's comments on government very interesting as of course, John's. Something different from John and well worth listening to.
