In 1976, God led Pastor Jack Phillips, his wife Pat, and their two children, Chris and Sherri to Candor, NC from a pastorate in Sanford, NC. Preacher Jack had previously pastored in Candor and many of the people under his pastorate had prayed for several years that he and his family would come back to start a local church in the area. What began as a glorified Bible study on the grounds of Living Water Youth camp was blessed mightily by God over the first several years. Tabernacle Baptist Church was formed and people would drive great distances to come to the ‚Äúchurch in the woods.‚ÄĚ In 1980, the present church auditorium was built and in 1986, the Livingston Center was built in honor of charter members Johnson and Odell Livingston. In 1995, additional Sunday school rooms were added because of church growth.
Michael Free, Preacher Jack’s son-in-law was added to the church staff in 1991 as the church’s first youth pastor. In 2001, after 25 years as pastor, Preacher Jack stepped down from the pastorate to go into evangelistic and conference ministry, and the church called Brother Mike to be its second pastor. In 2004, Edwin Lugo became the youth pastor.
Tabernacle Baptist Church has seen the mighty hand of God bless its ministry from just a fledgling Bible study with a handful of people to a growing ministry whose membership reaches out into four counties. The eleven acres of property is used not only for church ministry but also to accommodate the Living Water Christian Camp facilities and ministry.

Several years ago we had a couple from South Korea visit us while they were visiting relatives. They had been listening to us on SermonAudio. Another couple moved from Virginia to NC to go to our church because of SermonAudio. We were humbled by that also. --Craig DeSpain
