Introduction
I: AN ANCIENT CONNECTION
Deut. 16:3 “You shall eat no leavened bread with it. Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction- for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste- that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt.”
Isa. 53:4,7 “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. … He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.”
Isa. 53:6,8 “… LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. … he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people.”
II: A SLOW MOTION ACCOUNT
“Took”—Jesus took a body to Himself.
“Blessed”—Christ’s body was blessed or consecrated for service.
“Broke”—Christ’s body was broken as a sacrifice for sin.
“Gave”—symbolic of us partaking of the benefits of His affliction.
III: A COMMAND
A: “Take and eat”—the Passover was a commandment just as the Lord’s Supper is a commandment.
B: “Do this in remembrance …”
Deut. 16:3 “… Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction- for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste- that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt.”
Luke 22:21“This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
