Earthly and Heavenly Treasures, Part 1
Matthew 6:19-24
Introduction
I. Earthly Treasures are not Evil
A. Jesus is not teaching that treasures are inherently evil.
B. Ownership of property & saving for the future are Biblical.
Nor does Christ here forbid the fruit of our labours in the possession of goods and riches, provided they be acquired honestly and used aright. Let us not forget that scripture, "But you shall remember the Lord your God: for it is He that gives you the power to get wealth" (Deut. 8:18). The Lord graciously prospered Abraham, Job and David, and so far from their possession of wealth being a mark of His disfavor it was the very opposite. Third, nor does Christ here forbid the laying up in store for our own future use or for our family. J. C. Ryle
C. God often gives us more than we need
II. Earthly Treasures are Temporary (vv. 19-21)
A. They will not last and you will not last
B. Invest in what will last
John 6:54, 58 “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. … This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Heb. 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
