The 'full-size bed' and 'spotless quilt' of Christ's atonement is brought before man, but he has different ideas about how God's eternal salvation can be obtained!
He refuses to countenance the only way and runs around trying to discover rest in other man-made beds with their man-made coverings.
Concerning each of these the words of Isaiah 28:20 hold true: “For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.”
Many people select the ‘short bed' and ‘narrow blankets' of:
- GOOD PERFORMANCES
in an attempt to find rest and warmth for their souls.
“I’m doing the best I can!” is a common cry – but a most empty, hollow, and miserable hope for eternity! (cf. Luke 18, Romans 3:10-12, 20&28; Ephesians 2:8&9).
The same is true of:
- GRAND PROFESSIONS.
Some people are very fond of curling up in the cramped bed of an empty profession of faith.
They trust in a ‘decision’ they made ‘x’ number of years ago – a decision that was the result of a mere fleeting emotional moment, BUT has never resulted in any lasting change in their lives.
- GROSS PRESUMPTION.
Multitudes of deluded souls are clinging to the hope that, on the day of judgment, even though they have never repented of their sins and placed their faith in the substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus Christ in this life, God’s mercy will ensure that they will escape the crushing judgment.
