Who We Are

We are a church located in Calgary, Alberta.

Reformed in doctrine and evangelistic in practice, Calgary FPC is a caring family church with a deep love for God's Word.

As a body of believers we treasure the richness of the metrical psalms, hymns, and Scriptural paraphrases in our services as the basis of our congregational worship. Prayer is an integral part of all that we do, as we seek to cultivate a dependance upon God alone, as is a Christ-centred approach to the expository preaching of the Scriptures.

Although we recognize that God's people can be found in many different places, we have no sympathy for the modern ecumenical or charismatic movements. Nor will we officially fellowship with any church which has departed from the fundamental doctrines of the Word of God. Truth matters, and we believe it's important for the benefit of ourselves and future generations to stand for the truth and to cultivate an environment where the purity of the truth is maintained.

If you're in the Calgary area, and you're looking for a place to hear the Word of God, and where you and your children will be cared for and nourished in reformed doctrine and practice, we invite you to join us this Sunday. We would love to get to know you and your family.

  • We preach from the KJV Bible.

Rev. Paul A. Backhurst

Rev. Paul A. Backhurst was born in Cyprus in a British Forces hospital, and grew up in Liverpool in the North West of England. Educated at Liverpool Blue Coat School, Wavertree, he later studied Classics at King's College London. In 2002, he relocated to Nijmegen in the Netherlands, where the Lord saved him in 2004. On the suggestion of a work colleague, he initially attended a charismatic fellowship. There he met his wife and was married. They both studied the Scriptures avidly, and came to the conclusion that the teaching and the Gospel were unBiblical. After a short time in a House Church they became members of the Restored Reformed Church (Hersteld Hervormde Kerk), where the Doctrines of Grace and the Free Offer of the Gospel where clearly taught.
Having long prayed about a discerned ministerial calling, the Lord opened the door to study at the Whitefield College of the Bible in Belfast, Northern Ireland (UK). Upon graduation and licensing, the Lord called him to Calgary, Alberta. Ordained in January 2020, he arrived with his wife and seven children in Calgary in March 2020 to minister to the flock at Calgary Free Presbyterian Church.
