Strange Defenders of Christ at Calvary

On Resurrection Sunday, the sermon reflects on three unexpected figures—Pontius Pilate, a repentant thief, and a Roman centurion—who, despite their flawed or hostile backgrounds, became strange yet powerful defenders of Christ at Calvary. Though Pilate, the Roman governor, condemned Jesus yet inscribed 'King of the Jews' above His cross, affirming His innocence and divine identity, the thief on the cross, after initially mocking Jesus, repented, acknowledged his own guilt, confessed Christ's righteousness, and boldly called Him 'Lord,' receiving the promise of paradise. The centurion, witnessing the supernatural events—darkness, an earthquake, and Jesus' final words—concluded that this was no ordinary man, declaring, 'Truly, this was a righteous man,' and later, 'Son of God.' Together, these testimonies underscore the transformative power of Christ's crucifixion, revealing that even in the midst of mockery and death, truth, repentance, and divine revelation break through, calling all to believe in Jesus as Saviour and King.
