All right, let's grab our Bibles
tonight. We're going to start off in Matthew chapter number
11. We're going to be doing a lot of turning tonight, but it's
primarily just going to be in the Gospels. And so that'll kind of help us
out. Matthew chapter number 11. We started something this morning.
I don't usually transfer different studies from morning to evening
services and things like that. But we started something this
morning going over humility because it's so important. I want everybody
that comes to any one of the services that they're able to
go to to be able to get part of this. So folks this morning
got some stuff on humility. We looked at this morning on
the origins of humility. Humility comes from heaven, and
pride comes from Satan. We looked at that this morning,
and I also encourage you, we are on that sermon audio deal.
If you miss a service or a message and you want to hear it and catch
up on that, I can help you download the app on your phone or give
you the website or whatever, and you can look that up and
get that, and I would encourage you to do so. Because we mentioned
a little bit how important humility is. It's the way to see the power
of God in your Christian life. You have to be empty of self
and for God to be able to fill up and do something through you.
Tonight, we're gonna be looking specifically at the humility
of Jesus and seeing his life of humility. We mentioned just
a little bit about it this morning, but I wanna really look at it
and see the different aspects of humility in the life of Jesus
Christ, because you can't look and study the life of Jesus without
seeing his humility there, because it's all throughout his ministry.
Matthew chapter 11, let's start in verse number 28. Matthew 11,
28, the Bible says, Jesus speaking here says, come unto me, all
ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn
of me. For I am meek and lowly in heart,
and ye shall find rest unto your souls, for my yoke is easy and
my burden is light. Let's pray. Amen. All right, so Jesus says this,
verse 28. Come unto me, all you that labor
and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you and learn of me. To learn humility is to learn
Jesus. Okay, this evening, what we're
gonna be doing, we're gonna examine three key elements to humility
as expressed by Jesus Christ himself. There's three areas,
there's three different things that we can see in the life of
Christ, and it just shouts humility, okay? Before we get into those
three areas, though, I would like to point out one great benefit
of having Christ-like humility. It's mentioned in verse 28. Jesus
says, come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest. Verse 29, take my yoke upon you
and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall
find rest unto your souls. You know why we should crave
and desire humility? It gives us rest. When you are
full of self and you're trying to do everything in your own
power, you will become exhausted by all the effort that you've
put forth. And it's not until we can empty
out our self of self that we can allow God to fill us with
his power and do everything through his ability instead of ours.
Whenever you become empty of self, you run on God's power
and ability and have more personal energy to function properly. Okay, it's like why would you
run on your own tank of gas whenever you can just have the Lord fill
it up and it never runs dry? Okay, what happens is we just
say, well, if I can just make it a little further, if I can
just go a little more, if I can just do a little more, if I can
handle just a little bit more, if I, if I, if I, then I is going
to be exhausted. Okay, what we need to do is say,
God, I can't, God, I'm unable, God, could you, and we should
just start relying on him and let him fill us up so it doesn't
run out. The Bible says this in Psalms
37 verse 7. We won't have to turn there,
but in Psalms 37 7 the Bible says rest in the Lord and wait
patiently for him fret not thyself because of him who Prosperous
that in his prospereth in his way because of the man who bringeth
wicked devices to pass so we're to rest in the Lord and All right,
but we can't rest in the Lord while working ourself up in a
big tizzy, okay? If you find yourself exhausted
from personal effort, you need to pay attention, you need some
humility. All right, that's what we're getting at tonight, but
that's just a little side benefit that we see right there. Let's
turn, if you would, to John chapter number five. We'll be back in
Matthew, I'm sure, but it'll be at a different place. But
turn to John chapter number five. John chapter number five. The
first one of these three areas that I wanna look at is humility
is identified as personal inability to do something. So you want
to be humble, you have to recognize and admit your inability to accomplish
something. You say, well, I'm pretty able.
Yes, so is Jesus, but he mentioned a lot about his inability. Watch
this. This is a person's recognition
and acceptance that they cannot do something. This is really
difficult for self-reliant people. Okay, if you're strong, or you're
able, or you're strong-willed, or you think a lot about your
own capabilities, it's really hard for you to admit your inability
to do something. This might indicate or present
itself in the fact that you might have very hard trouble asking
for help. Why? I'm able. Oh, I can do it.
We got a phone call this week. Oh, boy, that was fun. I got
a call from somebody, some guy that was wanting to be able to
work and do a little bit of a, well, he wanted money before
payday. He called me up on Wednesday,
asked if, you know, can we give him some money, buy some brake
shoes for his car, whatever. He gets paid on Friday, but he
wants the car to be able to stop before then. And I said, well,
why don't you come over to the church? There's some things I
can have you do around here. And I said, it'd be just fine, and
I'll pay you for it. He said, oh, man, thank you.
That's wonderful. That'd be great and stuff. OK, show up this time
on Thursday or Wednesday or whatever it was. OK, I'll be there then. Great. Hang up the phone. But
two minutes later, I get a call from the same number. At least
I thought it was the same number I picked up. And it was some
lady on the phone now. And she goes, can I come by and
do something? Can I do it instead of my husband? Because I don't
get out of the house very much. And I can do anything he can do.
And whatever you can do, whatever he can do, I can do better, and
this, that, and the other, and stuff. And I said, ma'am, it's not good
for you to come over here. If I'm here by myself, it's not
good for some other man's wife to come over here. Because I'm
a married man. I was like, I don't want you over here alone with
me. And she said, well, I'll have
you know that a woman can do anything that a man can do, right? You know, oh, well, you know,
a woman, they're just as capable as men are, wouldn't you agree?
I said, I hear you. You know, and, well, you know,
because they can go out in an old rig and they can do this,
and, you know, I said, I hear you. You know, she wanted me
to say, oh, yes, women can do everything that a man can do.
And I was like, hmm. You know, can you lift up a hundred-pound
weight over here? Well, you know, some women, well, yeah, don't
give me all that. You say, what was that? She wanted
me to admit her ability, you know, and everything. People
like to brag about their ability. Look what I can do. Look what
I'm able to do. And I'm just as capable and just
as able. That's a lot of pride speaking.
If you want to have some humility, you've got to be able to admit
when you can't do something. I need help. I need assistance
here. John chapter 5, look at verse
19. John 5, 19. Jesus says this,
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I
say unto you, The Son, that's Jesus, correct? The Son can do
nothing of himself. But what he seeth the Father
do, for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son
likewise. Jesus just said that God the
Son, he himself, just said that he could do nothing of himself. Look at same chapter, John chapter
five, look at verse number 30. Jesus still speaking, he says
this. I can of mine own self do nothing. What do you mean? Jesus can do nothing? Well, I
thought he can do anything. Jesus says, I can of mine own
self do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and of my
judgments is just, because I seek not mine own will, but the will
of the Father which hath sent me. Turn to John chapter number
eight, in case you think it's a typo or I'm taking it out of
context or something. John chapter number eight, look
at verse 28. John chapter eight, verse number
28, Jesus speaking again. John 8, 28. Then said Jesus unto
them, when ye have lifted up the Son of Man, then shall ye
know that I am He, and that I do nothing of myself. But as my Father hath taught
me, I speak these things. This is Jesus, the creator of
all things, saying, I can of myself do nothing. I can do nothing
of myself. I only do the things which the
Father has given me to do. This is Jesus the Creator. The one that the Bible says all
things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that
was made. Jesus made everything and He says without God I can
do nothing. Jesus, this is Jesus the Savior. Jesus the Savior that the Bible
says in Hebrews 1 3 who being the brightness of his glory and
the express image of his person and Upholding all things by the
word of his power when he hath he when he had by himself purged
our sins Sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high So
Jesus, who paid for your sin, who redeemed you by his blood,
by himself, the Bible says, this Jesus says, I can do nothing
of myself. This is Jesus the resurrection. Jesus raised himself from the
grave by his own power, but he says he has no personal ability. Look at John chapter 10. Because
we find in here the declaration that Jesus raised himself from
the grave, but it also gives us a clue as to how he did this
even though he was of himself unable to do anything. Because
how can he have it both ways? How can he say, I can do nothing
but by the Father, and yet it's Jesus who is God that can do
anything? John chapter 10, look at verse
17. Jesus speaking, John 10, 17. Therefore doth my father
love me because I lay down my life that I might take it again. Jesus gave up his life so that
he himself can raise it up again. Verse 18. No man taketh it from
me, but I lay it down of myself. He died willingly. I have power
to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. Okay? Jesus
says, I have power to lay my life down for everybody, and
I have power, he has the power to take it up again. How did
he get that power? This commandment have I received
of my Father. Jesus had the power to raise
himself from the tomb, but he got that ability, the Bible says,
from the Father. We're talking about humility.
Jesus is expressing his humility by stating his inability to do
things. He is showing himself to be capable
of nothing so that the power of God might work through him.
Jesus, who is God, who has every ability, set aside that ability
so that he might be filled up with God the Father's power in
order to do things through God's power and so God the Father will
get the glory. Jesus, as the perfect example
of humility, emptied himself of his own self-reliance and
instead was filled with God's ability. Jesus was all God and
all man, yet he checked his deity at the door, his own personal
strength and his ability, so that God the Father might be
the power behind him and God the Father would get all the
glory. You see that? He did that as an example for
us. Because what kind of example would Jesus Christ be if he came
down, kept all of his deity power in himself, and could sit there
and do whatever he want? How would he know what it's like
to be man if he had not the weakness of man? He was tempted as we
are in all points yet without sin. Okay, I want you to understand
this, your ability should not play a factor in your humility. Your ability should not play
a factor in your humility. Jesus was all able, yet he set
aside all of his ability so that God could be the power and get
the glory. If we want to see God's power
in our lives, which I believe you do and I know I do, if we
want to see God's power in our lives, we need to empty ourselves
of our own ability, whether we have it or not, so that we can
be filled with God's ability. God's not going to work in a
crowded room. God's not going to work in a
crowded person. if you're so full of your ability and your
reliance on it, because, see, what we do is what I do. I'm not gonna throw you under
the bus, I'll throw me under the bus. What I do is I start off in my
own ability. and I say, I can handle this.
I am capable of this, and so I start off in my own strength
and my own ability. What happens is my ability wanes,
I get weak, or I find out in the process I can't do this.
That's whenever I turn to the Lord, and too often at times
I say, Lord, can you help me to do this? See, I tried my ability
and I found it insufficient. Lord, can you give me more ability
to help me to be able to do this? That is the absolute wrong approach
because I'm still reliant on me plus a little help from God. what we should do, what we need
to do in order to be able to experience the power of God whenever
we are confronted with a problem or an obstacle or a goal or whatever
we try to do, what we need to do first and foremost is come
to God and say, God, I am not able. I know the end of this
road and I know that I have insufficient strength, whatever my strength
is. I might have done this before. I might have had victory in this
area before. I might have done it a hundred times before. But
in order to see the power of God, I need to empty myself and
say, God, I am unable in this area. I'm not even going to attempt
it, Lord, without your power and your ability. So I want to
admit from the get-go, I can't. God, I cannot, but you can. So Lord, what I'm asking you
is I want you to not only do it for me because I need your
power, not mine. I want your help for me to be
able to empty myself so that you can come in and be the power
and get the job done. That's what we have to do, and
that's why Christianity as a whole is struggling today, and that's
why our lives, my life, is lacking the power of God, because we
still want to be part of the equation. Whenever Jesus himself
says, I can do nothing but by God. You know what Jesus says
about us? We can do nothing without him.
Without him, we can do nothing. So if you want to see the power
of God in your life, you've got to take on this aspect of Jesus's
humility and admit with Jesus, though he was quite capable,
God, without you, I'm unable to do this. I cannot of myself
do this. We need humility for this. So the first aspect we're looking
at, number one, is admitting your own inability. You wanna
have humility, you want God's power in your life, you're gonna
have to have humility. One aspect of that is admitting your own
inability. Number two, humility is identified
by whose will is being obeyed. Humility is identifying whose
will is being obeyed and it's not yours. That is submitting
to someone else's will who is over you. We have people over
us in the Bible, okay, Jesus Christ being one of those. But
we all have people over us. This aspect of Christ, Christ-like
humility comes from the mentality of my opinion does not matter
when it comes to anything. even the things pertaining to
my life. I like what one preacher said,
what God does in my life is none of my business. That's the mindset we need to
have is, God, my life is yours. I was bought with the price,
I'm hidden in Christ. Lord, whatever you do with me, it's really none
of my business. I don't have a say in it. Why? Because I don't matter and I
want him to be everything. He can't be everything if I'm
in there. If I'm 10%, he's not everything. I have to be 0% so
he can be everything. Look at John chapter number six.
John chapter number six. Verse number 38. John chapter six, verse number
38. John six, 38. Jesus says this. For I come down from heaven,
not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. Okay, Jesus did not come down
to earth to live his life his way. He came to do anything and
everything that was God's will for his life and his time here
on earth. Jesus' humility is seen and identified
by His willingness to submit to the will of the authority
over Him. Which comes with submission,
but obedience to that will. Look at John chapter 7, verse
number 28. John 7, 28. Then cried Jesus in the temple
as He taught, saying, Ye both know Me, and ye know whence I
am, and I am not come of Myself, but He that sent Me is true,
whom ye know not. I didn't come for my own self.
I come not of myself. I came not for my own purposes.
I didn't come because I thought it'd be a pleasure trip down
here. Jesus's entire mission was to do the things that pleased
the one who sent him, and that's God the Father. He didn't come
down for any other reason than that God the Father wanted me
to go, so I went. I came not of myself. It was
planned. God sent his son. John 8, 24. I'm sorry, John 8, 42. John 8,
42. John 8, 42. Jesus said unto them,
if God were your father, you would love me. For I proceeded
forth and came from God. Neither came I of myself, but
he sent me. God the Father did not force
Jesus Christ to come to the earth. That's not what I'm saying. God
did not force Jesus to come. But it was God's will and it
was obedience to God's will is why Jesus Christ came to the
earth. That's what Jesus said. Jesus did not show up on earth
and start saying, you guys better listen to me. Here's my will. Here's what I want. Here's what
I'm going to do. He showed up saying, the Father
sent me, and here's what the Father says. Why? Because he was there to do the
will of God. John 14, look at verse 24. John
14, verse 24. I know it's a lot of scripture,
but at least it's close together. John 14, 24. I make it a point
to hit so many of them to show you how much of a theme this
is through the Gospels. I don't know how in the world
we can miss so much of this, myself included, miss how big
this topic and area of humility is in the life and ministry of
Jesus Christ. It's all throughout the Gospels.
It's there, and we miss it, and I don't know why. John 14, verse
24. Jesus said this, he that loveth
me not keepeth not my sayings, and the word which ye hear is
not mine, but the father's which sent me. Jesus did not even take
personal credit for the things that he said. God got the credit
for what he said. He said, oh, you know, all these
people are saying, wow, who taught him? How did he know, having
never earned letters and things like this? Who taught him this
doctrine and everything? He said, it's the fathers. God
gave me this. God's the one that did this for
me. Don't think it's me. It's God
that did this. So Jesus left his throne in heaven
above to obey the father's will. He took on a robe of flesh, he
was born into poverty, and would die a torturous death for other
people, all because this was God the Father's will. The Bible says in Isaiah 53.10,
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him. This is the level of obedience
and submission that Jesus Christ shown through his life of humility
by obeying the will of the authority that's over him. And so Jesus
went through all this, he suffered and died knowing it was God's
will for his life and you can't obey God's will for your life,
why? You can't submit to that Bible
verse that goes against your sin, why? If Jesus was able to
go through everything he went through, knowing it was God the
Father's will, why can't you give that up? Why can't you stop
doing that? You know why you can't? A lack
of humility. You keep finding reasons and
excuses to justify what you're doing, and relying on self and
your own interpretation instead of what God plainly says in the
Bible. It's lack of submission to God.
It's lack of letting Him have His will and still exercising
your own will. Nothing should be too great for
God to ask us to do. Yet when we reject and ignore
God's will for our life, every time it's because of pride and
a lack of humility. Every time we read a Bible verse
that we know that we are disobedient to, it's another example of our
lack of humility and proof of our hindrance to God's power
in our life. You say, why don't I see more
results in my soul winning? Why don't I have the faith that
I think I should have? Why am I not getting a lot from
my Bible reading? Why is it that I find it so difficult
to pray? Well, if we're so full of self
and we won't let God have his proper place, it's no wonder
why we're lacking in the spiritual areas in which we lack. It's
no wonder why God has very little, if any, power in our lives, because
we're still so self-reliant, we won't submit to his will.
To help us achieve victory in this area of humility, we need
to memorize Jesus's prayer in Gethsemane, just the last little
bit. You know what he said? Not my will, but thine be done. That's Luke 22, 42, if you want
to look that up and write that down. But we need to get that
mindset of Jesus Christ right before going to the cross. He knew what was coming. He knew
the heartache, the pain, and the suffering, but he knew it
was God's will. He knew that pain was God's will.
He knew his death was God's will. He knew that from the time he
left heaven. He knew that was part of the
plan. And yet he said this, not my will, but thine being done. You know what we need to say
whenever we know we're facing a hard time, when we know something's
coming up, and we pray God did not take it away? We know it's
happening, and we know, okay, Lord, You're allowing this to
happen. You either brought it on me or
you're not stopping it. Tells me it's your will. Lord,
not my will, but thine be done. Can you help me with this hurdle
in front of me? Can you help me empty myself
so that I might see your power through that obstacle? God, I
want to see your power to get me to the other side because
I can't make it through that. God, I already know, I am insufficient
to be able to make it through that. Can you just help me submit
to your will? You're allowing it to happen?
Okay, Lord, not my will, but thine be done. My will's to go
around. My will's to avoid the obstacle. God, you put it in
the path, it's there. God, empty me so I can see your
power. Get me through it. So number one, we got personal
inability. Number two, we got submission
to the will of the authority over us. And number three, the
third aspect that we see of humility in the life of Jesus Christ is
service. Service. Look at Matthew chapter
20. Matthew chapter 20. We're gonna start in verse 25. Matthew chapter 20, verse number
25. These are just personal examples
of the humility in the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus actually
goes on to teach a lot about humility, and we'll get into
that probably Wednesday night, Lord willing. But we're, because
humility's everywhere, and it's so important, and we're just
missing out on so much, so we're really going to go through it.
Matthew chapter 20, verse number 25. But Jesus called them unto
him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise
dominion over them. And they that are great exercise
authority upon them. But it shall not be so among
you. But whosoever will be great among
you, let him be your minister. And whosoever will be chief among
you, let him be your servant. Verse 28. Even as the Son of
Man, Jesus Christ, even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered
unto, but to minister and to give His life a ransom for many. See, it's natural to want to
be waited on, and to be served, and to be pampered, and to have
other people do your bidding, and to be given things, and to
receive instead of give, and that's natural, that's fleshly. And the Bible says here Gentiles
do this. Okay, you know that the princes
of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them and that they are of
great, they that are great exercise authority upon them, verse 25.
It's pleasing to the flesh. It makes you feel valuable. You
know, I mean, you'll go and pay big money to go and get pampered
at a spa or be waited on in a fancy restaurant. Why? It makes you
feel important. You say, whoa, look at what these
people are doing for me. I must be something. Look at
that. I've got two or three people waiting on me. Oh, boy. Look
how much better I must be than them. And a lot of times, you
know, you ever get your shoes shined or anything like that,
they set you up so you can feel more important. Go and get your
mani-pedi, right? Ladies, you go and sit up in
the massage chair, and they're down there low, working on your
feet, and you go, huh. This is nice. I kind of like
it up here. That's natural. But it's fleshly. That's pride. It has its root
in pride. Jesus, on the other hand, your
creator, your master, did not come to be praised and served
on this earth at this time. But he came to serve and to minister
to others. That's what he said. Verse 28,
even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to
minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. So he came
not only to minister, but to die for us. Jesus' life is one
of service. You wanna live humbly, you want
to have humility in your life, you wanna see the power of God
in your life because of humility, you better be serving somebody.
Somebody that's not you. Jesus's life is one of service. Think about it. He fed multitudes
several times. Sometimes he fed individuals,
sometimes he fed 5,000 or 4,000. He fed a lot of people. What's he doing? Serving them.
He healed other people. He raised them from the dead.
He washed feet. He died in the place of those
deserving of death. He died on the cross for you
and me. What's that? That is a life of service. Not
a life of service to those who are worthy, but a life of service
to those who are unworthy. You wanna have humility in your
life and you wanna see the power of God in your life, don't go
out and serve those that you deem worthy of your service. Go out and serve anybody. Go out and serve anybody. Jesus's
humility was evident by his life of service to others. We were
there this morning. We can turn over there again.
Turn to Philippians chapter two, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians. Chapter number two, it talks
again about Jesus' life of service, how He was a servant. He didn't
come to rule and reign the first time. He'll come and do that
the second time. Don't you worry about that. He's already been exalted
to a throne of glory right now, and that throne's gonna come
down, and He's gonna set it up here on earth. But He came the first
time as our example of what we should be. Philippians 2, verse
number three, Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory,
but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem other better than
themselves. Look not every man on his own
things. Well, this feels good to me,
or I sure want, I'd like to have, boy, I like the place of preeminence. Look not every man on his own
things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this
mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in
the form of God, he was God, thought it not robbery to be
equal with God, he's God, but made himself of no reputation
and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the
likeness of men. Jesus was a servant. The greatest
doing something for the least, the better serving the worse. Service to others, I believe
service to others might not be the best way for us to obtain
humility, but it's an awfully good way to maintain humility.
Service to others is one of the best ways to maintain your humility. Why? It keeps the focus off of
self. This is why we're told so many
times in the Bible to love and serve one another. Places like
Galatians 5.13, you could write it down, we won't turn there.
Galatians 5.13 says, for brethren, you've been called unto liberty,
only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve
one another. We're told to serve one another.
He says, you've been given liberty. Great! That means I can go out
and sin all I want. No, no, no. You use not your liberty for
an occasion to the flesh. Instead, use that liberty, that
willingness that you've been granted. God's not going to force
you to do it. Use that liberty to serve one another. Jesus' humility was evident because
of his declaration of his own inability, his obedience to God's
will and not to his own, and number three, his service to
those who are actually quite beneath him. Those are great
evidences and signs just in the life of Jesus Christ of his humility. You know, one of the other benefits
of living a life with that kind of humility in it, turn to John
chapter 14. I'll show you this and we'll
be done for the night. John chapter 14. Jesus says something interesting
here, and I'm hoping, Lord willing, God help me, to be able to get
this pointless idea across to you. Because I think it's something
really neat here that the Lord shows and another great benefit
for living a life of humility. John chapter 14, let's start
in verse number seven. John 14, well, let's do six.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No man cometh unto the Father but by me. Verse seven, if ye
had known me, You should have known my father also. And from
henceforth ye know him and have seen him. So Jesus says, if you
know me, you should know the father also, right? And from
henceforth you know him and have seen him. Why? Because they know
Jesus. So Jesus says, if you've seen me, you've seen the father.
If you know me, you know the father, okay? Verse eight, Philip
saith unto him, Lord, show us the father. And it sufficeth
us. Okay, Philip's like, I don't
get it. Lord, could you just, you show us the Father and that'll
be good. Just let us peek into heaven,
we'll see God, this'll be great, okay? Verse nine, Jesus saith
unto him, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou
not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me, hath seen
the Father. And how sayest thou then, show
us the Father? Verse 10. Believe thou not that
I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak
unto you, I speak not of myself. But the Father that dwelleth
in me, he doeth the works. Okay? Here's what I want you
to understand, and I'll try to explain it. Lord, help us. I want you to understand, the
master is known by the submission and obedience of the humble servant. How do people that don't know
the master know of him and know how great he is? Well, because
he's got a faithful, humble servant that relays all the credit and
all the glory back to the master. Philip was wanting to see God
the Father. Verse number eight. Philip saith
unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus says
that if you have seen and spent time with the Son, then you have
seen the Father. Verse nine. Jesus saith unto
him, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not
known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen
the Father, and how sayest thou then, show us the Father?" Jesus
said, I've been with you for three and a half years, you've
seen the miracles I've done, you've heard me say it's not
in my power, it's in the Father's power, you've heard me say I
can do nothing of myself, it's only God that does these things.
Year after year, instance after instance, Jesus has been saying
these things, and now Philip says, let us see the Father.
Jesus says, where you been? Everything I've been doing, you've
been seeing the Father. You've been seeing the Father
through the Son. Jesus humbled himself to the
Father's ability. He submitted himself to the Father's
will, and he was doing the service of God the Father. In exchange
for Jesus' humility, God's power was shown in Jesus' God-given
ability. Okay, since Jesus humbled himself
in the three areas that we talked about, God put the power in the
life of Jesus Christ, and that power was so evident that Jesus
says, See? It was Him. It wasn't my ability. It wasn't even my words. It was all God the Father. He
did everything to point everything to God. Jesus told Philip that
you can tell that the Father is in Jesus because of the works
that the Father did through Jesus. Look at verse 10. Believest thou
not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words
that I speak unto you I speak not of myself, but the Father
that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Okay? I've been trying to tell you,
God's the power behind what I'm doing. God the Father's the one
that did all these works. Believe me, verse 11, believe
me that I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else believe
me for the very works sake. God got all the credit and glory
for what Jesus did. Jesus submitted himself to the
Father while here on Earth to be an example for us. Our role
is to submit ourselves to Jesus's authority, right? We are followers
of Jesus Christ, we're disciples of Christ, we are Christians.
That means we should humble ourselves to Jesus's ability, Jesus's will,
and Jesus's service. When did Jesus, I don't even
know if I should put it this way, when did Jesus kind of get
all of that power back, if you will? Well, whenever he rose,
he ascended, he lifted up. God placed him back up on that
throne right next to him, okay? Until we get raised up, until
we get lifted up, until we get... up there in heaven in whatever
position the Lord finds worthy to put us in. Until then, our
job and our role is to point everybody to Jesus Christ. Everything
that anybody can glory us for, give us glory for, oh wow, you
sure did this well, or oh wow, I can't believe you witnessed
so well, or you sing beautifully, or you do this, God did that. God gets all the glory for that,
and they will see through you pointing them to Jesus Christ.
Jesus gave that to me. Jesus did that for me. It's only
through Jesus Christ that I am able, that His ability is shining
through me. You see what I'm saying? Other
people will see Jesus Christ in you. Just like other people
were seeing God the Father through Jesus Christ. Right now, Without
humility, we do things in our own power and it often fails.
And since we claim to be Christians, while failing in our own power,
we drag Jesus' name through the mud, through our own inefficiency,
through our lack of success and the lack of power in our life.
So what happens? We're so reliant on self, that
we're not able to do anything for the Lord because we don't
have His power behind us. And since people know that we
go to church and we've witnessed to them before, we gave them
gospel tracts before, we've talked Christian-ese to them and everything,
and they see the lack of power in our life and they say, so
what? Jesus didn't do much for them.
Say, why is that? Because we're relying on ourself,
and so we're dragging Jesus' name through the mud. If we,
through humility, void ourselves of self-reliance and instead
let Jesus be the power behind our works, we succeed and Jesus
gets the credit and the glory. That's why it's so important
to give Him all the praise and all the glory. Anything that
anybody sees as a victory, anything that might be perceived by you
as a pat on the back, make sure you give Jesus Christ the glory
for that. And the more we can empty ourself of self, the more
we'll see Jesus getting glory in there. So we're trying to
tap into his power, and this humility is the way to do it.
We've got to get out of his way. That's what we're needing. That's
why we're studying this, and I praise God we've got such a
great example of it. What a wonderful Savior we've
got. Let's stop there here tonight.
