He is in our good friend, Brother David King, to visit and all matters attend there. So we will ask you to continue to remember him as he travels The circumstances there with Brother David. I have only a couple of places for you to look. And this is something that is very familiar. So I hope that we can look at it anew today and not let it slip by without extracting what might be found there for us. We have labeled it in our notes here, the devil's tremble. And it is found in James chapter 2. In James chapter 2, we will read there shortly, and look at the devil's tremble. But before, if you will, let us beseech the Maker for His help and guidance. Gracious Father, we thank you, Master, for your permission to be in this place in this hour. We thank you for your kindness in permitting us the ability and giving us the energy for you to be here. The hope of hearing from thy voice that which is needful in this moment of time. We ask for your guidance now to our heart and to our mind to absorb what we believe You have dealt to us in this moment. We ask, O Lord, for Thy mercies upon these dear souls, upon our dear pastor, and those with whom he visits, that you would keep each. And in these moments, Master, that you would deal very kindly help us to overcome any and all obstacles Father we ask these things in the name of the Holy Son In Christ's name, Master, we pray. Amen. If you would look with us, James chapter 2. I'd like to start with you verse 14 James chapter 2 verse 14 What doth it profit my brethren? The old man say he hath faith and hath not works. Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, depart in peace, be warmed and filled, notwithstanding you give them not those things which are needful to the body. What doth it profit? Even so, faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works. Show me Thy faith. Without Thy works, and I will show Thee my faith by my works. And then in verse 19, It just somewhat grabbed our attention some time back. And we have just reflected on it. Off and on. Thou believest that there is one God. James says, Thou doest well. that is a good thing that is a good thing however the devils believe also and they tremble and they tremble When I was younger, my dad used to grow a little bit of corn. We would always do these. We had the habit of wearing out corn before we could ever get it into the crib. We'd handle it so many times. He'd grow it and come time to pick, harvest. We'd pitch it all by hand, what he had. And so I would take two rows and he would take two rows and we would pitch to the middle and make a heap row. And then later we would go get the wagon and mules or whatever we had and we'd go down with a cotton basket and we'd pick it back up put it in the basket, carry it to the wagon and dump it in. If I had taken my basket and emptied it and dumped it into the wagon I would have been helping him just about as much as it profits someone to tell them to be filled. Brother, be born. Be born. And I didn't do anything to bring these things to pass. I'd be helping in both cases about the same amount. No help. So I tell you from what James is saying also that the devils understand something I don't know that I can say they hear but they know something they recognize something because he said they believe they believe something So if they can believe and tremble, and if my faith is like that cotton basket, it's empty. You know, we're on the same level with the devils. We're profitless. We're profitless. In Matthew 8, there's another example to tie to this. Matthew chapter 8, if you will. verse 27 Matthew chapter 8 verse 27 But the men marveled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? And when he was come to the other side of the country of the Gerbetsins, there met him two possessed with devils, Coming out of the tombs exceeding fierce. Like the man John talked about. Unable to be restrained. Exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And listen to what they say. And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus? There is recognition. Thou Son of God, art welcome hither to torment us before the time. Before the time. I don't know how much they know. I don't understand how they can know any of this and remain rebellious as they do. But nonetheless, they ask the question, are you calm to torment us? before the time. The thought is that devils tremble. They can see, they understand something. They recognize something. Whatever. All of that may be. I always took the word tremble to indicate fear. But others have posed the thought that it also reflects hatred, anger. So perhaps it is some of all of those things. Are you calm to torment us before the time? The devils tremble. So I read those things for you and for myself to bring you to a point that I have shared with many of you before. And I think it bears again at this moment to share with you again. I have not always known Barrett. I grew up knowing Tim, his brother, pretty closely. But I did not know Barrett. And my only introduction to him came about because of a promise to someone else. And I was, although in rebellion, I was self-righteous enough that I was going to do what I had promised to do. In my world, that's what I was doing. And so to fulfill that promise, we had to come in here and speak. And so we did. It went on, they were close by, and so after three or four times, we had journeyed there. In all my wisdom, in all of my In all of my great knowledge I said and I can see it as clearly in my mind right now as the day it happened I don't think I'm going back. You're not supposed to feel depressed when you go to the meeting house. You're not supposed to feel down. You're supposed to be uplifted. How little did I know? the devils can recognize have this insight whatever it is the James said they believe and they also tremble my friend they They cannot hear. They cannot hear. There was a voice there. And I only come to understand it a little bit better later. But there was a voice. And they were starting to work on bringing me down. Revealing to me just how wise and holy I was. But this is a place that the devil cannot go. They apparently know a great deal about him. But they do not have that knowledge. And they cannot have it. To fulfill the promise set us on a course. that has brought us to this place on this day and today I encourage you if you have heard anything if you have recognized anything different If there is one iota of a flutter, do not disregard it. The devils asked, have you come before the time? That was their concern. Are you here already? In our world they looked on him with their eyes Are you here before the time? Are you here before the time? We must grasp We must hold on to and reflect on the gravity of that thought. It is profound. We sing that old hymn, 695. Let me read you a part of the verse that we sing. But methinks But methinks a sweeter concert makes the heavenly arches ring, and a song is heard in Zion which the angels cannot sing. Hearing will fill the basket. Hearing will place my cloak on you if you need it. will take my prayers and give it to someone else how profound how mystical this is Finally, I was hearing a voice and my own mother asked me, some say you believe in the preacher man too much. And my response to her was, he is the only man who has ever talked to me about the living God. I have had all my life men who have said, be filled and be warned I've had them all my life speak in front of me about this God but now there is a voice talking to me about things I have never heard So the devil's tremble might be an unusual title. But the contrast between what transpires within them and then in us If we encounter him, I hope highlights a little bit of head knowledge. I don't know how to describe What sort of transformation? A new creature. A new creature, but how much must these other beings see and yet they will not bow in worship? Have you come before the time? How dramatic it is that a man can hear at all is so profound. The devils tremble. But that's not good enough, you see. the devils believe but it just makes the torment worse so we have attempted to deliver to you what we believe is ours to do this day. I hope it can be of some benefit, some help. I'd only ask you in closing to not let the poor efforts of the speaker interfere with you hearing anything that has been said. These are great things we speak of. They shake the earth. They are great things. Powerful. Mighty. To be respected. So, with that, I will ask you to remember the meeting next Sabbath. Consider Barrett as he travels. We'll not close with a hymn. If you don't mind, we'll just consider ourselves dismissed. Let us all be merciful to each other. Amen.
