This is cassette number two. Now there's a big difference between a child and a dog, although these psychologists won't admit it. What is the difference? A child comes to school at the age of six, having learned to speak his own language. Do you know from the age of two to six, this tremendous learning energy has permitted him to learn to speak his own language? so that he comes to school with between 5 and 35,000 words in his speaking vocabulary. He has mastered the auditory and verbal skills to a very high degree. This little tot. You know, and he did it without the benefit of Sesame Street. And without the help of clowns and jumping jacks and and cartoons. He did it all by himself. People don't realize that children are serious little learners. They learn to speak their own language. That's a remarkable feat. And that makes the big difference between a child and a dog.
A dog, if he comes to school, hasn't learned to speak anything except, you know, bow-wow. But apparently, our educators treat our children as if they were just bow-wowing.
Now what happens when a child comes to school with this tremendous learning energy, speaks his own language, is going 195 miles an hour, he's confronted with a reading program that slows him down to one mile an hour. Because now he is taught to read only ten words, repeated hundreds of times the same ten words which are already in his speaking vocabulary and he has to memorize these words by sight and this becomes an incredible stumbling block to further development so what happens he develops a reading problem a learning disability a learning blockage and these have been documented we have millions of American children who are so-called reading disabled, deliberately created by these teaching methods, by this incessant conditioning that goes on in the first and second grades.
And this, you know, the professors put this over on the American people. They never asked the parents about this. They never said, do you want your child to be taught like a dog? They never asked that, you know. They just did it on their own.
And today, 85% of American schools still teach look-say as the dominant form of instruction. You will see virtually in every syllabus of elementary education sight vocabulary. And the sight vocabulary is the thalidomide of elementary education. and it's virtually impossible to get it out of the schools because it has become so accepted that teachers teach it without even knowing the damage they're doing.
Well the progressives were so successful in getting phonics out of the schools that by 1944 dyslexia had become a household word and millions of children were having problems learning to read. In April 1944, Life Magazine published an article on dyslexia stating, quote, millions of children in the United States suffer from dyslexia, which is the medical term for reading difficulties. It is responsible for about 70% of the school failures in the 6 to 12 year old age group and handicaps about 15% of all grade school children. Dyslexia may stem from a variety of physical ailments or combination of them. glandular imbalance, heart disease, eye or ear trouble, or from a deep-seated psychological disturbance that blocks a child's ability to learn." Unquote. Even Life Magazine didn't know the real reason, the real cause. Even the editors of Life Magazine were fooled by the educators.
The article then described the treatment given a young girl afflicted with dyslexia. Thyroid treatments, removal of tonsils and adenoids, exercises to strengthen her eye muscles. What did they do? Put little weights on her eyelids so that she could strengthen her eye, develop bulging muscles on her eyes? Nowhere did they recommend teaching her the alphabet. That would have been the simplest thing to do. But how thyroid treatments or an adenoid operation was supposed to cure the child's reading problem was not explained. It just shows you the utter ignorance of the American people.
And you know, when the professors read this, they must have laughed all the way to the bank. They said, boy, the American people are dumber than we thought. We're getting away with murder. Well, that's the way things were until 1955 when Rudolf Flesch wrote his famous book, Why Johnny Can't Read. In it, Flesch told America for the first time that there was nothing wrong with American children. It was the teaching method that was causing the problem. He was the first to bring that to the attention of the public.
But he wasn't the first to have warned the teachers. The professors were warned back in 1929 by Dr. Samuel T. Orton who wrote an article in the Journal of Educational Psychology with the title, The Cite Method as a Cause of Reading Disability. So they knew in 1929 that the Cite Method could cause reading disability. Well, they published the article in their own publication probably because they didn't dare not publish it or else they would have been exposed as hiding something. But I think they also published it because they wanted confirmation that the method was working the way they wanted it to work. That it would indeed create reading disability.
Well that article was published in 1929 and in 1930 the first Dick and Jane books appeared. And I don't know how many of you have been taught by Dick and Jane but maybe I can give you a little Nostalgic pleasure by reading to you some of the literary gems from Dick and Jane as composed by Dr. Gray.
Dick, look Jane, look look, see Dick, see see, oh see, see Dick, oh see Dick, oh oh oh, funny funny Dick.
If that didn't drive the children crazy, I don't know what did. It's amazing the number of children who survived that kind of conditioning. But you know, they knew that the method didn't work. And the proof is in the revisions that they made from the 1930 edition to the 1951 edition.
Explain the difference. In 1931 and 1930, that is the first Dick and Jane Prima, pre-Prima, they taught 68 sight words in 39 pages of story text with one illustration per page, That is a total of 565 words. That is, those 68 words were repeated enough to make 565 words and a teacher's guidebook of 87 pages.
In 1951, instead of teaching 68 sight words, they taught only 58 sight words. So they were teaching 10 fewer sight words. That same preprimer had been expanded to 172 pages. In other words, they were teaching 68 sight words in 39 pages, now they were teaching 58 sight words in 172 pages, divided into three separate pre-premises with 184 illustrations. Before they only had 39 illustrations, now they have 184. A total of 2,613 words, that is repetitions. So they were repeating these 58 words 2,613 times. Previously they had repeated 68 words only 565 times.
And the teacher's guidebook had now expanded to 182 pages. The teacher's guidebook in 1930 was 87 pages. In 1951 it was 182 pages to teach 10 words less.
In 1930, the word look was repeated eight times in the preprima. In 1951, it is repeated 110 times. Look, look, look, look, look, look, look. In 1930, the word oh, O-H, oh, was repeated 12 times. In 1951, 138 times. In 1930, the word see was repeated 27 times. In 1951, 176 times. Just to learn the word C. S-E-E. And they didn't teach any rhyming words with it. Each word was taught individually. As if it alone existed as a little picture.
So they knew it didn't work. They knew the method was a total and complete failure. And the revisions prove it.
and yet they continue to teach it in the schools and of course they still teach them today. Of course what Rudolf Flesch had to say didn't go over too well with our educators who proceeded to criticize, vilify and discredit Flesch accusing him of wholesale representation. Actually the educators were absolutely enraged. Why? Because Flesch made them appear stupid. He said, look guys Phonics works better than looks, say. Wake up. But you see, they already knew that. He wasn't telling them anything they didn't know, but he was ridiculing them. He made them appear stupid in front of the American public. And of course, in their arrogance, they felt that they were pulling one over on everybody. They were smarter than everyone. To them, it was the American people who were stupid, who were accepting what they were dishing out. and making them millionaires at the same time. I mean, what a deal they were having. So naturally, they just turned the entire teaching profession against Rudolf Flesch. And even today, if you mention Rudolf Flesch to most teachers, they'll tell you, oh, he's terrible. He hated American education. He's a terrible man. He's a villain.
And then what did they do? Well, the professors of education created the International Reading Association. They decided to organize professionally to make sure that look-safe would remain in the schools despite parental pleas, despite criticism. And they created the IRA, the International Reading Association, which is the largest professional teaching organization in America. The NEA is a union, it's larger, but as far as education goes, the IRA controls the elementary teaching profession. Period. They control it all. They hold their conventions every year. Thousands of teachers come to hear the gospel of the wonders of the Luxembourg method. And of course all the publishers sell their wares there.
And if you go through these If you look at all the books that are being published today, there are all these pictures lavishly illustrated, 85 pictures and 3 words, all humanistic, not the mention of God anywhere, completely humanistic, completely evolutionist in their point of view, in other words, The children, most of the stories about animals, children with animals, children acting like animals, animals acting like children, you know, to make the children feel at home with their cousins at the zoo. And that's the kind of stuff that's being given to American children through their elementary, elementary school books. Grade six, I mean, six-year-olds in grade one and grade two. Yes, some phonics is being taught, more phonics is being taught now than ever, but certainly it is not being taught in the way that it should be taught.
Well, they have continued to teach, let's say, until American literacy was reduced to its present abysmal state. 23 million functional literates, some say it's up to 72 million. 50% functional illiteracy among blacks, widespread adult illiteracy, poor writing skills at all levels of society, an academic decline that the National Commission on Excellence in Education says has made us a nation at risk. Our educators have done quite a job on us academically, deceiving the public, the parents, and the children. The American taxpayer has been robbed blind by the educators to finance his own intellectual destruction, He's actually paying the educators to destroy literacy, the free enterprise system, individualism, religion, and our unalienable rights as human beings.
After hearing all of this, you must be wondering what kind of men would deliberately devise a plot of such diabolical evil to destroy the minds and souls of our youth. I believe that John Dewey, James McKean Cattell, Charles Judd, Edward L. Thorndike, and the rest were basically Satanists, driven by a hatred of God so deep that they were willing to spend their lives doing everything in their power to turn the American people against them.
Now, why do I call them Satanists? Because these were men, all of whom came from good Christian homes, good Christian families. John Dewey was brought up by a good Christian family in Vermont. he went to church on Sundays, he even taught Sunday school but then in the universities he became a materialist and a socialist and then he spent the rest of his professional life doing everything in his power to destroy Christianity and to destroy the work of Jesus Christ and to substitute a new religion in its place called secular humanism now when somebody works consciously Every day of his professional life to destroy the work of Jesus Christ. I think you can call him a Satanist. And all of these men were doing the exact same thing. They were involved, you can call it a conspiracy, a satanic conspiracy to destroy religion, the Christian religion in America. There's no doubt that that's what they were doing. And that is why today's educators are putting up so strong a fight against school prayer, creationism, or even equal access. They would rather risk destroying all of public education than permit God to enter the classroom.
But they don't believe that there's much of a risk. Because the public educator today has a lien on all of your property. By law. You have become the slaves of the public educators. You don't own your property, they own it. Try to stop paying for all of this atheism and Satanism. See how far you get. They have a lien on your property. They have passed so many laws that have bound the American people that we are now totally in their control. They've become so politicized now that they control the Congress of the United States. They control most of the state legislatures in America. So they're pretty confident that the Reagan presidency is just a temporary aberration, and that the Christians will get tired, go back to sleep, or whatever, and that they will continue on their road toward the one world socialist government.
Now their entire program is calculated to turn this nation against God. If, as the Bible says, righteousness exalteth the nation, then sin must hopelessly degrade it. And that is Satan's aim, to degrade human beings who were created in God's image. What better way to hurt and offend God than by turning his children against him and making them disgusting in his eyes? And have we not become disgusting with our abortion mills that have killed over 15 million babies, our pornography, our perversions, and our blasphemies. And none of this would have been possible if the public schools of America had not become the moral cesspools that they are today.
The American educator has played a central role in turning this nation against God. In turning the American public school into a temple of atheism, ignorance, and vice.
There are, of course, many good teachers in our public schools. And I want to stress that because I'm often accused of coming down on all teachers. Of course it's not so. I know many good teachers. They attend many of these meetings and they come up to me and they're delighted at what I'm doing. They thank me for what I'm doing. They know what's going on. The good teachers know what's going on in the schools.
So there are many good teachers in our public schools trying to do some good in an environment of overwhelming sin. But many of them are ready to quit. Listen to some of them.
Quote, this is a teacher in Iowa. I'm sick of being called foul names, sick of hearing students use four letter words, fed up on garbage and fights in the halls and the you can't make me attitude.
A teacher in Michigan. The public would not believe what goes on in the average classroom. Anyone who goes into teaching today should have his head examined.
A teacher in Tennessee. I've taught school for 25 years. These last five years have been the worst. Everything that isn't nailed down disappears. The language in the halls and classrooms is unprintable.
Speaking about things being stolen. Everyone in America now locks their cars wherever they park. Even if you park it in a church parking lot, people lock their cars. It's automatic now. Nobody feels safe anymore. People are ripped off every day. Everything that isn't locked up disappears.
A teacher in Chicago. I am a teacher who is also ready to quit. I have a nervous stomach from the fist fighting in my classes. A student pulled a knife on me last week. Three teachers in our school were assaulted last month. It's a nightmare, unquote.
Well, incidentally, these quotes come from letters that were sent to Ann Landers, who is not exactly a member of the John Birch Society. So we know what the teachers are going through, and therefore they are as much the victims in many cases as the students.
Humanism, socialism, and communism have one thing in common. They all share a burning hatred of God. This makes them allies in their determination to wipe out Judaism and Christianity. Hatred of God makes them all Satanists. For Satan's mission is to separate man from God by any means he can devise. That is Satan's mission. To separate the human race from God.
Igor Shafarevich, the brilliant Soviet mathematician, writes in his book The Socialist Phenomenon Shafirovich, incidentally, is a Russian who was born there, has lived all of his life in the belly of the monster. He knows communism from having lived in it every day of his life. He was a professor at a Soviet university. He has lost his job because of this book. He is what is known as a dissenter. And this book, The Socialist Phenomenon, was first written in Russia in the underground. And then it was brought out of Russia and it's been translated into English and is now available in English in this country. There's a very good introduction in the book by Solzhenitsyn. Well, anyway, Shafarovitch writes in the Socialist Phenomenon, quote, The death of mankind is not only a conceivable result of the triumph of socialism, it constitutes the goal of socialism. You hear that? The death of mankind is the goal of socialism. The complete extinction of mankind is not a chance external consequence of the embodiment of the socialist ideal, he writes. This impulse is a fundamental and organic part of socialist ideology. To a greater or lesser degree, it is consciously perceived as such by its partisans and even serves them as inspiration.
And this explains why there are so many of these demented individuals willing to die to bring about Stalinism, to bring the gulag to America, to bring hell on earth. There's something terribly pervergent about human nature that there are people willing to die in order to bring hell on earth. But that's exactly what he's referring to. That's what he says about these men.
And of course, If you've watched television, last night before I went to bed I was watching Carl Sagan. All he did was talk about the imminent suicide of the human race. They're frightening us into his solution to this nuclear suicide, his nuclear winter, and he says we're talking about the extinction of the human race. And his solution to the problem is, let's get rid of all the the nuclear weapons well of course he has no way to force the russians to get rid of their nuclear weapons so his solution is for america to unilaterally disarm and uh... somehow the russians uh... that will dissuade the russians from them dropping their nuclear weapons in other words his solution is surrender to the soviet union and that will bring peace on earth of course what it will bring will be you know, mass suicide.
But what Shafarevich says is very, very important to absorb. I believe that his analysis of socialism is perhaps the deepest, most profound, and truest. In other words, socialism, communism, and humanism are cults of racial suicide. No wonder so much talk of nuclear holocaust by humanists and communists. And you had a good dose of it if any of you saw that film of the day after. I refused to see that film because I simply did not want my emotions to be manipulated by a bunch of stupid liberals. So I went to a Chinese restaurant. But the rest of America was subjected to this massive masochism and as a result It had a very strange, you know, it's interesting, the film had a very strange impact. It did not have the impact that the makers thought it would have. They thought that immediately there would come a cry, disarm, disarm, you know, surrender now. Instead what happened, Americans went out and they bought the biggest cars and the biggest refrigerators and washing machines they could, all on credit. Because they figured they wouldn't be around to pay for it. So we had the greatest surge of consumer credit in the shortest period of time. And everybody wondered, how come people are now suddenly borrowing? Going into hock. Well, I guess people figured if we've got to go, we might as well go on a Cadillac, you know.
So you can't predict the reaction of human beings. But it's interesting though that we live in this world where we're constantly being told that the human race is on the brink of self-annihilation. It's the communists who have brought us to that point. I mean, we were willing to get rid of all of our nuclear weapons after World War II. But it was, you know, the communists got the atomic secrets from these wonderful communist spies in our midst. And they were the ones, of course, who permitted Russia to build up its nuclear arsenal, and so we had to match them. And that's all. It's been a matching game. We've tried to simply defend ourselves against the blackmail of the communists. So we've had to live with that idea, that sort of Damocles of our head.
And no wonder Jim Jones staged the mass suicide of himself and his followers. And there you have in microcosm The whole communist strategy and philosophy. Mass suicide. Men, women, and children. All committing suicide. With the leader committing suicide last. That's it. That's the strategy. That's what they want. Mass suicide.
No wonder Pol Pot killed off half the Cambodian nation in one year. No wonder the humanists are pushing death. education in the schools of America. To get American youth used to the idea of suicide, death, morbidity. I mean it really is satanic. And no wonder we have killed over 15 million unborn babies in this country.
Shafarevich writes, quote, understanding socialism as one of the manifestations of the allure of death explains its hostility toward individuality, its desire to destroy those forces which support and strengthen human personality, religion, culture, family, individual property. It is consistent with the tendency to reduce man to the level of a cog in the state mechanism as well as with the attempt to prove that man exists only as a manifestation of non-individual features such as production or class interest. And I might add to that also to reduce man to the state of an animal. You see, that's the tendency of these philosophies.
Now I would suspect that Shafarevich is not quite a believer, not a Christian, although he comes very close to it. He attributes this desire, this cult of suicide to the allure of death. Of course, Sigmund Freud attributed it to something which he called the death instinct, the death wish. You've heard of the death wish. But I believe that this suicidal impulse comes from another source. I believe that this impulse comes from Satan.
The suicide of mankind is Satan's ultimate goal. because it would represent man's complete and utter rejection of God and his gift of life. Also, it would prevent the fulfillment of the coming of Christ because there must be a human race here waiting for him. And that's what they've always tried to do is disprove the Bible. See, Hitler tried to prove that he could kill all the Jews and therefore prove that the Jews would not exist that they could be exterminated because Hitler wanted to prove that the Bible was was wrong that God was wrong Satan was more powerful and the communists want to prove that and the humanists want to prove that Christ won't come by killing off the human race so we're really we're really in a in a kind of race for time here.
The Christians have got to wake up and take control of their governments before they're led down this suicidal path. But because Christ said he was coming, I don't believe the Satanists are going to succeed.
But why do men follow Satan? Why do they follow Satan? Why are there so many willing to do his bidding? So many of them willing to, you know, to wrap bombs around themselves in order to bring hell on earth. They do that every day in Beirut. They do it because Satan permits them to exercise their sinful natures and promises them fulfillment of monstrous lusts. which lead to unrestrained human degradation. Of course you saw it in Nazi Germany when these men became Satanists and the things they did to other human beings are beyond comprehension. I mean they reduced human beings to such a level of degradation it's almost impossible to conceive that they could do such evil. The Russians have done this, the communists have done the same thing. in every country that they've conquered with the gulags, they exterminated millions in Russia, the Chinese, Mao Zedong exterminated millions and of course we see what they're doing in Ethiopia I mean you see these people starving to death, bags of bones just lying around there and the government there is having a wonderful time driving around their Mercedes and importing liquor from England, Johnny Walker booze from Britain so that they could celebrate their 10th anniversary while they are driving their people to death through starvation.
And even in this country, you see, what are the Satanists doing? They're exercising their monstrous lusts. They're engaging in cannibalism. Boy, that's pretty low. I mean, how much lower can you get than that, cannibalism? Child sacrifice. murder, it's really getting pretty awful.
Degradation is the unmistakable hallmark of Satan's work. For Satan loves to degrade God's masterpiece made in his image. It is the rejection of God that makes us susceptible to Satan. And that is why Satan encourages skepticism, agnosticism, and atheism. Anything that will separate us from God and remove us from God's protection.
Satan is the father of lies, and whenever falsehood begins to dominate an institution, you can be sure that it has fallen under satanic influence. That is now true of public education, where educators routinely lie to deceive the public. There are few institutions in America as dominated by the lie as public education, and that is a sure sign of satanic control.
So what do we do? Where do we go from here? Well, I cannot understand how Christians can put their children in schools that are under such tight and complete satanic control. They've got to get the children out. That's the first thing. Get the children out. Get them into private schools, church schools, homeschooling. Now there are many church schools that are not that good. So homeschooling becomes perhaps the best alternative and there are thousands of parents doing exactly that. The exodus from the public schools is very real and it is increasing at a great rate.
So that's what we must do. We have really no choice because it is impossible to reform public education. I don't see how it can possibly be reformed. I don't see how we can get the break the hold that the behavioral psychologists have of the whole system. They control the teachers' colleges, the graduate schools of education. They control the writing of the textbooks. They control the curriculum. How can you break that power? Can one member on the school board do it? Can the PTA do it? The PTA has been used by the educators to gain parental support. Well, I was in North Carolina recently and tried to get the North Carolina legislature to mandate the teaching of intensiphonics in the first grade as the only method of teaching reading. You would think that I was starting a revolution. You can't even take care of the reading problem. in the public schools. The only way you can teach children to read. Some of them are lucky enough to learn in the public schools because they have some teachers who teach phonics, but the only way you can really do it is to do it at home. Or in a good Christian school where they know how to teach reading.
So the solution to the problem is one that requires action on the part of Christians. If we get our children out of the government schools the government schools won't have them to pervert and corrupt. And we'll be able to perhaps save this country.
I've been asked the question often, well, what do you do about the poor children if we bring down or close down the public schools? Well, it'll be very simple. We could have, certainly there will be enough money around to pay for the education of poor children, to pay the tuition of poor children. so that they could attend a decent, a good private school. But that is what we have to do. We have no real choice in the matter. That is the only alternatives open to us.
So I think that I've made it very clear that if we are to survive, if we are to prevent the world from succumbing to these cults, these suicidal cults, We've got to get the children out of the schools that are promoting these cults. We've got to take them back and we've got to take control of our own children. And this will require a good deal of work on our part. This will require reasserting the unalienable rights of parents to educate their children without interference from the state. This will mean actually repealing compulsory school attendance laws. that are being used to persecute and harass parents and to close church schools as you know in certain states.
Well that is the program, that is the agenda, that's what must be done. I've painted a picture which I think is as close to reality as certainly I can paint. I've minced no words. I feel that only the truth will make us free. And remember, without knowledge the people perish. Thank you very much.
Before I accept the questions, I would like to say something about the John Birch Society. I've known the Society now since, oh, since 1963. They are the one organization in the United States that has kept their eye on the ball in defending American freedom and trying to restore this country to the kind of nation we had that the founding fathers gave us and it is a very good strong organization it is composed of marvelous individuals the best patriotic citizens of this country belong to the society if you want to join an organization that will help fight the evils that I spoke of that is the organization to join. You will meet wonderful people, you will have great fellowship with people who share your concerns and you will become part of a body of movers and shakers who are going to do some great things in the future because I believe that the society really is on the threshold of a great expansion and the more Americans who become awakened and get involved in this, the better we will be able to stop the NEA, the educators, the psychologists, the atheists from destroying this country.

We hope to kill it. Yes, ma'am, in the back here. What do you think of the work of the Reading Reform Foundation? Ah, wonderful. The Reading Reform Foundation, what do I think of the word? Well, I've been associated with that foundation since it was created in 1963 by Watson Washburn. He created the organization because he wanted to restore phonics in the public schools or in the schools of America as the primary means of teaching children to read. Now I've been associated with that organization since that time and I can tell you the resistance put up by the educators, you would not believe the resistance that the educators put up to phonics. It's hard to believe that they could fight so hard to keep something so sensible out of the schools and maintain this luxe garbage. But it has taught me a lot.
Incidentally, the Reading Reform Foundation supplies information on different phonics methods and books, so that if you are into homeschooling, get on the mailing list of the Reading Reform Foundation. You will find that they are a great source of information on the reading problem and on reading books.
Yes, sir? Would you comment on the possibility that Dr. Benjamin Spock was in collusion with the educators that you mentioned?
Would I comment on the possibility that Benjamin Spock was involved with the educators in this country, in collusion with them? Well, of course, he's a pediatrician and he has never hidden his radical leftist ideology. So in that respect, he's very much part of their... but I don't know if he's... His book, that he wrote many years ago, is what you've said to me through the years, is a promise for young love. Oh, of course, sure. Which he recommends to me as a thing that... Oh yes, but I think though he's an independent individual, I don't think he's associated with any of the organizations.
There are these... radicals who managed to influence large numbers of people, particularly in this case young mothers, on the rearing of children. But that's been a problem since the psychologists, since the scientists took over mothering in this country. And you know what happened then? They switched from the, from nursing, from natural nursing to the bottle. And the bottle of course, and cow's milk swept across America. And mother's milk, which was the natural milk for the human infant, was replaced by a cow's milk. Now, infants are not little cows. They're not calves. And yet we've been feeding them cow's milk all these centuries. Mother's milk is really the true milk for the human infant. And it was the scientists, the psychologists, the humanists, who were responsible in many respects for getting women away from their natural... nursing... how would you say... duties or whatever to the artificial means
now it's interesting that about in 1955 a new organization was created by women called La Leche League that has been trying to get women back to natural nursing and it is very successful as one of the largest organizations in the United States now dealing with child rearing and I addressed one of their conventions in Toronto some years ago and it's really remarkable what is happening in that aspect of mothering, the return to basics.
Yes, ma'am. Well, the daycare centers, there are so many people responsible. As a matter of fact, the NEA wants to extend the compulsory school attendance laws down to three-year-olds or four-year-olds. I know they want them down to four-year-olds, possibly down to three-year-olds. They want to get the children earlier and earlier. so that they can begin warping their minds at an earlier age. And to separate them from their parents. The most important work that the public schools do today is not only separate the children from God, but from their parents. Because they don't want the children to have a loyalty to their parents, they want the child to have the loyalty to the state, or the educators, And that's another reason why I consider homeschooling such a marvelous development because it is bringing the family together. It is making children and parents a loving, harmonious group instead of, you know, you hear about children coming from schools and they're telling their parents, oh, you're old-fashioned, your values don't mean anything anymore, you know, this is a new age, Don't tell me anything about sex. You know we know everything and all of that. That's what's happening
Children in the public schools are being turned against their parents And of course many of these parents are at a loss to at a loss of what to do because they've let this happen They've let it happen, and then they want to do something after it's too late When the child is so rebellious and has been encouraged in this rebelliousness by the educator then they want to do something about it well it's like trying to close the barn door after the horse has been stolen what at least the homeschoolers do is they prevent this sort of alienation and separation and division the homeschool provides harmony between the generations love of parents by children and of children by parents and respect Respect of parents by the children.
Today's children in the public schools don't respect their parents. The parents are frightened of their children. The teachers are frightened of the children. As you know from those letters that I quoted. I mean the kids are unmanageable. They have become little demons. Demon possessed in a sense. Essence.
Well the NEA was founded in 1857 and at that very first organizational meeting they called for the establishment of a Department of Education with cabinet status. because they wanted the American people to have the same things that they had in France and in Germany you know a centralized highly centralized national education system with a minister of education while they had to wait until the Carter administration before they finally got their department and Reagan of course has wanted to get rid of it but he has not had the votes
And so as long as we do not have a conservative majority in the House of Representatives, we're going to have to live with that department. I don't know how long it's going to take before we have a conservative majority in the House. The NEA worked very hard in the last election to prevent that from happening. I mean, despite the fact that Reagan won by such an overwhelming vote, The coattail effect was minimal. Why? Because the NEA worked on the local level. And somehow the American people cannot put two and two together. You know, so they will vote for a liberal locally, but a conservative nationally.
Take Nebraska. 70% of the people in Nebraska voted for Ronald Reagan. It's supposedly a a conservative state, yet the Nebraska State Legislature is completely controlled by the Nebraska State Education Association. And it's that legislature that made it possible to jail Reverend Sullivan, close a church school, and to harass this church school for years before this new law was passed. And the new law doesn't settle the issue. The new law is simply a standoff. All it did was transfer the responsibility from the church school to the parents of the children who were sending their children to the schools. So what we have in Nebraska is really a standoff.
But you see, even in so-called conservative states, the Teachers Association is so strong because they're lobbying. They lobby 24 hours a day. They've got a permanent building in every state capitol. you know, that lobbies these legislators. These legislators are in their pockets. And the only way we're going to break that hold is for us to become aware that this exists. Until my book was written, I don't think the American people realized the extent of the influence and control that the teachers have in these state capitals and in these local school board elections.
Do you know that there are more teachers running for office? than ever now. There are more teachers in the Michigan State Legislature than lawyers. More teachers in the Oregon Legislature, in the Washington Legislature. They are on the march for political power. And we're just waking up to that fact. So if we want to change things, we want to get rid of the Department of Education, we're going to have to address that problem first.
Yes, sir. Secretary Bennett. Secretary Bennett is what is known as a neoconservative. He's one of those who at one time was a liberal and now he has become somewhat of a conservative. He's not one of the establishment crowd. He's not one of the NEA types. But he more or less represents the That group of conservatives who think that they can reform public education. And there are even some Christians who think they can do that. They think that they can initiate some reforms. I think they're going to be sorely disappointed when they find out four years ago that they had no effect or impact at all. The only thing that's going to quote reform unquote education is for everyone to pull their children out of the schools. That's the only reform that's going to do anything.
Yes. How many high school graduates are graduated in the United States in a given year? Oh, I don't know the exact number. I don't have that information right at hand. I'd have to look that up for you. Well, what was the one millionth representative who were called illiterate? Well, I think it's about a third. So you have about three million high school. But it's interesting. I was looking through. There was an article in Education Week on illiteracy in America. And they had some figures that are much higher than the ones I have.
Let me give you, for example, this is from Education Week of September 5th, 1984. 84% of 1,392 colleges and universities have remedial programs in reading, writing, and math. 84%. Michael Holzman, assistant professor of English at University of Southern California says, by and large, freshmen are not conscious of language. They show very little stylistic creativity and they possess few higher order rhetorical skills. The Industrial Conference Board survey states that 65% of the company surveyed reported a decline in reading ability among newly hired employees. 74% reported decline in writing ability. A federally funded study in 1975 by the University of Texas and census data estimates that as many as 72 million Americans are incapable of performing or have difficulty with basic tasks as reading the label on an aspirin bottle, writing a check, or following the directions for cooking a TV dinner. Well, now you hear about stories about accidents happening in hospitals where medical aides are putting the wrong things in the veins of people undergoing surgery. And have you ever looked at some of these medical words, how long they are, how difficult they are to read? No one's ever bothered to ask these people who are in these professions whether or not they can read.
But we know for sure that there are many people holding very responsible jobs today who have reading problems and who are very clever at covering them up. I know of executives who take their letters home to their wives at night to read for them. As a matter of fact, I interviewed a very successful restaurateur in Boston, a millionaire, graduate of Indiana University, who told me he couldn't read.
Now what he meant by that he couldn't read was that if he could not identify the word by sight, he had no way of figuring out a word they had never seen before. So he considered himself illiterate. He told me he would rather be beaten than have to read. So I asked him if he'd wanted to learn how to read. I said, you know, I tutor people in that area and I'd be glad to help them. So I used to go up to his office at night and teach him to read, you know. He had never in his life articulated the isolated sounds of the English language. He had never said, ah or eh. You know, and at first it was rather difficult for him.
And after a while he said, is this phonics? And I said, yes. He said, well, you know, when I was in the first grade, our class was divided up in two parts. One half went into phonics and the other half went into the other stuff. He said, I went with the other stuff. and so he was made, his life had been permanently damaged by his schooling and yet he was able to overcome his handicap and become a very successful man thanks to the help of his wife, his mother and others but he was going through life as a handicapped individual when he was a perfectly intelligent as a matter of fact, better than average intelligence able to run a corporation, but can you imagine running a corporation and not being able to read and having to rely on others all the time to read contracts and things like that? What a handicap.
But let me just, the rest of these statistics, the defense department says that 10% of those between the ages of 18 and 23 read below a 6th grade level. The National Assessment of Educational Progress said that 13% of 17 year olds and 20% of adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate. It estimates that 40% of minority youths are functionally illiterate.
