the Fortress of Faith. Today we look at the life of
a lawyer who, in the eyes of most, was extremely successful.
But one man discerned a great need in his life. One day a C.I. Schofield sat at his desk studying
a case. Mr. Tom McPheeters to see you,
Mr. Schofield. Oh, of course. Well, hello, Tom. Did I catch you at a bad time?
Why, no, no. Every day is a busy day for a
lawyer. How are you, Tom? Have a seat. Well, thank you.
How is your family? I understand that you... Don't stop by again any time,
Tom. It's always good to see you. Oh, is there something else,
Tom? Yes, there is. You see, Mr. Scofield, For a long time, I've
been wanting to ask you a question that I've been afraid to ask.
Oh? But I'm going to ask it now. Oh, I never thought of you as
afraid of anything. What's your question? I want
to ask you why you're not a Christian. Well, uh, well now that, that
is a rather unexpected question. Well? Well, doesn't the Bible
say something about drunkards having no place in heaven? I'm
a hard drinker, McPheeters. You haven't answered my question.
I ask why you're not a Christian. I've always gone to church. But
why are you not a Christian? Look, my father and my mother
were true Christians. But Mr. Schofield, why are you
not a Christian? I was brought up religiously.
But of course, when I got away from home, I plunged into my
career and all that went with it. My practice has been my life. Well, I've been so busy working,
I guess, and establishing my law career, that I've been forgetting
God. Now, Tom, stop looking at me
like that. You know I'm not happy. I... Well, when you try to analyze
it, I guess I... I don't ever recall having been
shown how to be a Christian. I do not know how. At last, an
honest answer. Now, I have my New Testament
in my pocket. I'm going to read to you John
3.16 For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life. That sounds so simple. It is. Let me show you some more
scripture. Here. Verily, verily, I say unto
you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. And over here in the tenth chapter
of John, Jesus says, And I give unto them eternal life, and they
shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my
hand. Now let's turn over to Acts chapter thirteen. Be it known unto you therefore,
men and brethren, that through this man, that's Jesus Christ,
is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. And by him all that
believe are justified from all things, from which you could
not be justified by the law of Moses." Now, you're an educated
man and a lawyer. The scriptures are plain. Will
you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior? Well, I... I'm going to think about it.
No, you're not. I said I was going to think about
it. Mr. Scofield, that has been your
excuse for your whole life. You've been thinking about it
all of your life. I guess you're right. Why not
settle it now? Look, look, I appreciate your
concern, but really, I'm busy. I'm late for an appointment now.
Why put it off any longer? Settle it now. Believe in the
Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. All right, Tom. I will. Let's kneel together right here.
All right. Now, I've shown you the scriptures.
Let me show you just one more. Whosoever believeth that Jesus
is the Christ is born of God, and every one that loveth him
that beget loveth him also that is begotten of him." Now let
us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, for many
years now I've put off claiming the forgiveness that's to be
found in Thee. I do accept Jesus Christ, and
I do trust in His blood, shed for my sin and guilt, and not
any good works of mine. And I ask Thee to save me." Kneeling in his law office, C.
I. Schofield was born of God. He
knelt a drunkard. He arose a saved man, a new creature
in Christ. For thirty years Dr. C. I. Schofield
preached the Gospel to others. He became a co-worker with D.
L. Moody. Today nearly every Christian home makes use of a
special edition of the Scriptures which contains notes he compiled. When one studies the Schofield
reference Bible, it's hard to imagine the author of these notes
was once a slave to alcohol. When speaking of his salvation
experience, he said, Mine was a Bible conversion. From a well-worn
testament, McPheeters read to me the great gospel passages,
John 3.16, John 6.47, John 10.28, Acts 13.38 and 39. I received
Jesus Christ as my Savior, and the passion for drink was taken
away. There are people listening to
this broadcast today who have put off the acceptance of Christ
as Savior. Jesus said, Him that cometh to
me I will in no wise cast out. Will you come to Him to receive
Him today? O turn ye, turn ye, for why will
ye die? When God in danger, He is coming,
So God, how Jesus, in Christ, the Spirit, has come. Angels
are waiting, Waiting to welcome you home To
welcome you home So why will ye die? Why will ye die? And now Christ, now Christ is
ready Your soul to relieve Your soul, your soul,
your soul to relieve Oh, how can you question if you
will believe? If sin is your burden, why will
you not cry? This is your burden, come, come. Did you, did you leave it, come? So why will ye die? Why will he die? Why will he die? Today's account of the conversion
of C. I. Schofield was prepared by Doris
Harris. Listen again next week for another
dramatic story of Christian experience from the Fortress of Faith, Bob
Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. Oh.
