to be the propitiation for our sins. That word propitiation, that means that the Son satisfied That the love of God is shown in sending His Son. And it's also, the love of the Father is also shown in adopting us to be His own children. 1 John 3, 1 says, behold, what kind of love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. What an amazing thing, that He would adopt us as His own sons and daughters. What love.
And God's love is also shown in how he cares for us and has compassion on us. He provides everything we need. Romans 8 reminds us that if he did not spare his own son but gave him up for us all, that he will with him give us whatever we need. He has said that he will never leave us nor forsake us and nothing can separate us from his love. He disciplines us as a loving father, and that discipline is a sign of his love, but he never casts his children off. And he has compassion on us.
Pastor Duff has been taking us through Psalm 103, and one of the verses that he hasn't got to yet, but that in Psalm 103 mentions the love and compassion of the father, and it says this. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him, for he knows our frame and he remembers that we are dust.
When I was eight years old, I got very, very sick, and I lost a lot of weight. I became very, very, emaciated, and I clearly was very sick. And my parents didn't know what was wrong with me, so they took me to the hospital. And it turned out that I had type 1 diabetes, and I had to be in the hospital for three days. And my parents weren't able to be with me in the hospital, but my grandmother was. She was with me for those three days, and she made sure I was okay and watched out for me and cared for me. And she did that. even though it was uncomfortable because she loved me. One of the things she had to do was sleep on a very uncomfortable hospital bed. It was a very extremely uncomfortable bed, but she slept on it for those three days. And she was with me because she loved me and she had compassion on me.
And God the Father loves us and has compassion on us. And not only that, but God the Father pours into our lives his love. Romans 5 says that the love of God is poured into our hearts. God gives us his love so that we can love him and love others. 1 John 4 says we love because he first loved us. And because he loves us, we know that he will work all things together for our good, and he will be faithful to complete the good work he has begun in us.
At the Lord's table, we remember the love of God, the love of the Father in giving his Son, Jesus Christ, the love of the Son in dying for us, the deep, deep love of Jesus that we sang about earlier, and the love of the Holy Spirit that is poured into our hearts. So brothers and sisters, remember God's love, the love of the Father, of the Son, and the Spirit. And if God so loved us, how much we ought to love him. And if we love him, we will keep his commandments. And how much we ought to love one another and to love others.
Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for your amazing love that you would choose us from eternity, that you would send your Son, the Lord Jesus, O Father, that you would adopt us to be your sons and daughters. We pray that we would grasp that by faith. We pray that We would remember your love and that you would pour your love into our hearts so that we would love you more and love one another more and love others more. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen.
