for the reading of God's Word. Verse 13 says, And one of the
company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother that he divide
the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who
made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them,
Take heed, and beware of covetousness, for a man's life consisteth not
in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake
a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich
man brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself,
saying, What shall I do? Because I have no room where
to bestow my fruits. And he said, this will I do.
I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there will
I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul,
soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thine
ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, thou fool,
This night thy soul shall be required of thee. Then whose
shall those things be which thou hast provided? So is he that
layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Our Heavenly Father, we're thankful
this morning again that we have thy word. Thankful that thou
hast been gracious to us and thou hast preserved thy word

sounds good, which tickles their ears, but they're not interested

would see the need to humble themselves and to realize that
the true God has given us his word and that he does not change

that, we can know how to build our lives. Help us as we look into these
verses. If there's someone today who is still chasing after dollars,
Thinking that they need to impress their neighbors and others with
what they have, they would see the importance of knowing Thee,
trusting in Thee, and wanting to follow Thee. May Thy will
be accomplished as we look at these verses, we pray in Jesus'
name. Amen. You may be seated. Title of the message this morning
is materialism over spirituality. Materialism over spirituality. It tells us there in verse 13,
it says, and one of the company said unto him, master, speak
to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me. Generally,
we know from the Old Testament that when a father was expecting
to die soon, he would call his family around him and he would
lay out the blessings that he wanted to bestow upon them, the
things that they could have. In Old Testament teaching, the
oldest son was to get a larger portion of the father's things
as compared to the rest of the children. And the rest was divided
by the others. So they didn't have a will necessarily
the way we do it today. And it wouldn't always be that
the father, because if the father was not thinking that he was
close to the end, he wouldn't be calling his family in. And
sometimes a death can come rather suddenly. So there's no opportunity
then to call the family in. But here in this case, we're
not sure what the issue was, but we know that this man, he's
not happy with his inheritance. So he's a very greedy man. Because one of the things that
we need to understand in life is that it really doesn't matter.
Your parents don't owe you anything. When your parents die, you should
not be thinking, well, there's going to be an inheritance. I'm
going to get this amount of money or close to this amount of money.
You shouldn't be thinking that way. Anything that your parents
give you is a gift. And that's the way you should
leave it. And so in a family, there are people with differing
ideas. If you are the only Christian
in your family, you know that your rest of your family is not
thinking the same that you do. They have a different view of
things than you should have. And that's important. So in a
family, when the parents die, and it comes time to divide up
what they have, then the Christian in the family definitely should
not be concerned about making sure that he gets his fair share.
You don't have a fair share. It's a gift. And if you are only
given a certain amount and you think you should have more, so
what? If your brothers and sisters
want more of it, then don't fight over it. So in this text, this
man, he comes to Jesus and he complains to him. He said, speak
to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, man who
made me a judge or a divider over you. So our
first point is who made Jesus a judge? Well, the fact is he
is the judge. But not in regard to these things. Doesn't matter to Jesus, because
Jesus knew and we need to understand that when we die, we take nothing
with us. So how much do you want to accumulate
while you're here? Because when you're gone, others
are going to have to deal with that. And in our world today,
if you don't make out a will and you die, the government takes
a bigger portion than if you have a will. The government is
very greedy. They never have enough. because
it's not their money, and so they spend it like as if there's
no limit to it. So they never have enough. So
it is important in this world in which we live to have a will,
because you don't want the government to have it, or maybe you do,
but I don't want the government to have any more of my money
than they have to have because they don't know how to spend
it. And when they spend it, they spend it on foolish things. like
climate change and like the murder of unborn children and like socialism
and teaching in the schools that a boy can be a girl and a girl
can be a boy. I don't want my money to go for
that kind of junk. So I'm going to do what I can
to limit the amount that the government can take from me.
But this man is not concerned about that. He's just concerned
that he has some of the inheritance from his father. And so Jesus
challenges this man in regard to what he's coming to Jesus
for. He's not coming to Jesus to know
how to be saved and to understand salvation like Nicodemus came
to Jesus. He's coming to Jesus because
he's greedy. In verse 15 it says, And he said
unto him, Take heed and beware of covetousness. For a man's
life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
So when you die and your children, your wife, if you're the husband,
you die before your wife does, they open the will and they look
at what you had, what you'd saved up, And in the secular mind,
oh, that guy didn't save very much. He wasn't a very good steward. That's how the world looks at
it. But Jesus tells this man and he tells the company because
it tells one of the company in verse 13. So there's a number
of people that are here with this man. Jesus is addressing
the man, but he's also talking to the people that are there
with that man. So he says, take heed and beware of covetousness. Covetousness is wanting what
doesn't belong to you. It's somebody else's, but you
want it. And as I mentioned already, the
father's wealth does not necessarily belong to the children. Generally
in a home, that's how it goes, because the father wants to help
the children. And so he makes it so that when
he's gone, whatever he had, he divides it amongst the children.
He wants to help them. But the greatest need that a
man has is spiritual. So the greatest thing that a
father can pass on to his children is a testimony of salvation and
of walking with God. showing the family while he's
alive, what does it mean to be a Christian? What are the blessings
of walking with God? What is the hope of that man? You know, that the children can
look at their father when he dies and they can look at that
and they can see a man who had a testimony that he loved God.
Because those children need to know how to love God. They need
to know how to walk with God. They need to see how God provides. And so it's very important. So
Jesus cautioned this man here, warned him and warned the company
that was there. Man's life consisted not in the
abundance of the things which he possesseth. So be careful in how much energy
you put into the things that you have and the things that
you want in this world. And if you're sacrificing the
truth for those things, you're a loser. It doesn't matter how
much money you have. Apparently, Charlie Kirk was
worth about $12 million when he died. Apparently, his wife
is worth about $9 million. So he left that all behind. He
had two mansions that he had bought recently, and the one
he had for sale, I don't know, maybe it's sold already, but
he was investing in the things of this world. His wife was investing
in different things as well. So they had possessions, but
what do they leave for those little children? What does she
have as she continues to raise those little children that they
have? And the most important thing, as we're going to see
in this passage, is to be rich toward God. So the second point
we have here is a greedy farmer. A greedy farmer. So Jesus often
spoke in parables. And here it says, he spake a
parable unto them, saying, the ground of a certain rich man
brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself,
saying, what shall I do because I have no room where to bestow
my fruits? And he said, this will I do. I will pull down my barns and
build greater. And there will I bestow all my
fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, soul
thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thy knees
eat drink and be merry so this man was greedy but we see here
in this account that there came a time in his life where he figured
he had more than he needed so he wasn't continually chasing
after things there are people today they're older farmers already
They could retire, they don't, and that's okay, but they're
never satisfied. They always want more, more land,
more crops, more bins, and so on. And so Jesus illustrated
here the problem. This man was already rich. It
says, the ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. So God has been blessing this
man. This man doesn't know God, but God has been blessing him
and he's giving him another good year. He's already rich, but
now he's got this bountiful crop that he's taken off. So this
man, as it tells us in verse 17, he thought within himself.
This man can't see very far, he's blind. He's only looking
at himself. What am I going to do with this
bounty that I have? No recognition here that the
bounty that he had came from God. It's just a matter of what
am I going to do with this bounty that I have? So it says, what
shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? Now, what is the purpose of a
farmer? His purpose is to grow crops to sell to the world. Sell to his neighbors, sell to
the store, to sell. That's what he's doing it for.
He's growing crops to feed other people. Yes, he needs to get
something back for it because it costs him money to grow it.
So that's why he sells it. He may give, he may know of some
poor person that can't afford it, and he may decide, I'm going
to give that person a bag of wheat or a bag of potatoes or
whatever it is. That's his choice. But that's
the purpose of a farmer. It's not just to increase his
own wealth from year to year. A farmer should be a farmer because
he wants to help to feed other people. That's his purpose. And the problem today is that
there are so many farmers, just like in other industries, so
many farmers that it's all about how much money can I make. So
that's how they decide which crop they're going to grow. They're
going to grow granola because they can make more money off
of canola. They're going to grow corn because there's a market
for corn this year. They're gonna grow wheat because
I can make more money off of that. So farmers oftentimes today
are not growing their crops to feed the people, but they're
looking at how much money can I get back. Barley isn't grown
much in this area. A lot of barley is grown, it's
called malt barley. What's it grown for? To make
beer, to make other liquors. Does that help anybody? No. But why do they grow malt barley?
Because they can make more money off of malt barley than they
can off of feed barley. So the farmers that are growing
malt barley are not concerned about feeding people. They're
concerned about their pocketbook. Corn. There's a great increase
in corn production. Why is that? Is it because they're
growing it to feed people? Are they taking that corn and
making cornflakes from it? Are they making cornmeal from
that so you can bake your muffins and so on? No. The reason that
more corn is being grown, the reason the price of corn is higher,
is because corn is being used to make alcohol. not for drinking,
but to mix with the gasoline that you're burning in your car.
So that's why there's been an increase in corn production in
the last number of years, because the government is using that
to turn into alcohol to stop using so much fossil fuels. And
so that's the way it is. Canola, there's been a big market
for canola because China buys a lot of Canadian canola. China
this year has put 100% tariff on Canadian canola because China's
upset with Canada. So they're punishing Canada.
So the Saskatchewan government is right now, they're planning
and they may be there already going to China to try to persuade
the Chinese government to change their mind. But you see, we're
not growing crops so much anymore because of the need of our local
area, like Canada even, but we're looking at world markets and
we're looking at how much money can I make off of this. So this
farmer here is a picture of a lot of farmers today as well, thinking
within himself, I've got no room to bestow all this that I have
grown. No God involved here in his mind. So in verse 18, he's got a solution. He's going to tear down his barn.
So this farmer is not only greedy, but he's wasteful. So instead
of tearing down the barns, why wouldn't he just build another
barn? No, he's not going to do that. He's going to tear down
his barn. He says, I will pull down. Doesn't
say I'm going to take it apart and reuse the lumber. He's going
to pull it down and he's going to build bigger. And then he says, there will
I bestow all my fruits and my goods. So this farmer is greedy and
wasteful. He's already got barns. He could
build another barn if he needed to, but he's not going to do
that. He's going to tear them down.
He's going to build bigger. Now I heard this week of a farmer
who had a wheat bin. And I guess either he didn't
set his auger up properly when he put the wheat into that bin,
or the grain was a bit tough when he took it off. But anyway,
with that wheat in the bin, the bin started to collapse. So now
he's got to move all that grain out of that bin and put it somewhere
else. So I don't know what the whole situation is there, but
I know enough about that farmer that that farmer is a very greedy
farmer. Maybe he was in too big of a
hurry setting up his bin. And when it was augering into
that bin, it was augering too much to one side, not in the
middle. So when it was spreading out, it was more on one side
than the other. And the bin couldn't hold it,
couldn't take the pressure. And so it collapsed. That's a
problem. That can happen. But it's important
that you set that auger up so that when the grain is falling
into that bin, it's falling in the middle. So that as it falls,
it'll spread out evenly to all sides. And if the grain is a
little bit tough, then you have to be careful because if the
grain is tough, it doesn't flow the way that it should, and it
might flow to the one side and sit there, not spread out enough,
and it gives you problems. So this farmer in our text, he's
gonna tear down his barn, he's gonna pull them down, he's gonna
build new barn. So he's got an expense on his
hands here. He has to build more storage. That's gonna cost him. It's gonna cost him time, it's
gonna cost him labor, it's gonna cost materials. Because he's
gotta buy wood, he's gotta buy the nails to put this barn up. So there's an expense involved
here. Whereas if he would sell that grain, he wouldn't have
that problem. And it wasn't that there wasn't a market for the
grain. He's just greedy. He's got a plan. Verse 19, we
read about that plan. And I will say to my soul, soul,
thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thine ease,
eat, drink, and be merry. You see, in our world too, once
a farmer gets big enough, once he's wealthy enough, he doesn't
have to sell his crop every year. He's got enough money in the
bank, so he can sit on that crop and hope that the price is gonna
go up. So he creates an artificial shortage. And so the person who's
dependent on that farmer's grain He has to pay more for it, not
because there's a shortage of grain, but because the farmers
are greedy and they're sitting on it and not selling it. So
yes, there needs to be good business sense. You don't want to flood
the market and make the crop worth nothing. But on the other
hand, the farmer has to understand why he's farming. He's farming
to feed people. So he's not going to try to impoverish
people, but he wants to help people to be able to live. That's
his calling. His calling is to be a farmer.
So as a farmer, he should be concerned about helping other
people. He wants to live too, yes. But
Jesus talks about here, this problem of the farmer is not
rich toward God. And that's the danger today as
well. That the farmer needs to look at, or the mechanic, or
the welder, or the trucker, or whatever employment you have,
you need to understand why are you doing this? And the Bible
tells us if you don't want to work, you shouldn't eat. So that's
one reason why you're doing it. You're doing it because you want
to eat. You need food. And the Bible says if you don't
want to work, you shouldn't eat. So you want to be lazy? You shouldn't
eat. You should starve. We would have
a much better country in Canada if we didn't have the welfare
system that we have. People that don't want to work
shouldn't eat. So those people that you see
on the boulevard when you go into the city with their sign
begging for money, they're not worth a penny. They shouldn't
get any money. If they're well enough to stand
on that boulevard with a sign, they're well enough to go and
work. And so it's foolish to give them money, and yet a lot
of people do. Some of those people, they dress
in rags when they go out begging, but they actually live in very
nice houses, because they're doing quite well begging off
of other people. So our system is corrupt because
we live in a godless country. But Jesus here is talking about
how things should be. And that's how Christians should
look at things too. we should look at how things
should be. So as we deal with people, we
need to deal with people, what should they be doing? So instead
of giving that person who's out there begging money, give them
a tract, speak to them about their need to be saved. And if
they would get saved, they wouldn't be out there begging, they would
find employment. And so this man here is very
self-centered, And in part three here, he's a foolish farmer. He's a greedy farmer, but he's
also a foolish farmer. Verse 20. So who gets it when
you die? You don't. You have no control over it.
Doesn't matter how much you have. You die, you have no control
over it. You can write out a will, you
don't have control of how that will is going to be read. So, if you have a family where
some of them are greedy, maybe all of them are greedy, but some
of them maybe, And the will is opened and read, and somebody
says, I don't like that. I think I should have gotten
more. I'm going to hire a lawyer and fight this will because I
want more. So who gets the money now? Not
that greedy family member, but the lawyer. Because it's expensive
to hire a lawyer. And the lawyer, he's in it to
make money too. So is he going to try and work
as fast as he can? No. He's gonna try to drag it
out in the courts. The more time he can spend, the
more money he can make off of your greed. So this man was a
fool because he's looking at himself and what can he gain? And so Jesus says in this parable,
God says to this fool, this night, thy soul shall be quiet of thee.
You're going to die today. You haven't had a chance to build
the barns yet. You've got this abundance. You haven't had a
chance to build the barns yet, but you're going to die today.
So then, whose shall these things be? So you notice there, this
night shall thy soul be required of thee. When a person dies,
their soul goes somewhere. And their soul is under God's
control. And God knows your soul and he
knows my soul. He knows whether our souls have
been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ or whether we are
lost. He knows that. The soul that
is not saved goes immediately to hell. Immediately. That person chose not to believe
in God, like this man here, chose not to believe in God, chose
to live for this world as God was materialism, things. I want a nicer house, I want
more clothes, I want to keep up with the Joneses, I want a
better car, I want more trips, so on, just things. This night, thy soul shall be
required of thee. We are answerable to God, whether
we want to believe in him or not, we're answerable to God. So this man, was a fool because
he had not taken into consideration where was he going to spend eternity. He didn't believe in eternity. He was just living for the now.
And that's the way a lot of people live, just for the now. They're
just concerned about now. So in verse 21, Jesus says, so is he that layeth
up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. So in verse
20, go back there, the last part of that verse, because this man
was going to die that night, then whose shall those things
be which thou has provided? He had no more say in it. Now
it was up to whoever. If he had a wife, if he had sons,
daughters, it was up to them now. Not up to him. So he lost
control. But his soul, that was the thing. His soul, where was it going?
You see, the Bible tells us you can't buy your way into heaven.
And there are a lot of people that live that way, as if you
can. There are a lot of people that live their life and they
think that the Catholics, for instance, They think that the
more money they pay to the priest after their loved one dies, the
quicker they can get that person through purgatory. There is no
purgatory. And so all that money goes to
the priest who gives some of it to the Catholic religion. That's why they can have their
fancy buildings. That's why they can have golden
vessels inside those buildings. That's why the priests can live
so well, even though they oftentimes try to act as if they're very
poor, because they want more of your money, but they're not
poor. Even so-called Mother Teresa,
she was a millionaire. She had a lot of money when she
died, but she acted like she was a poor person living penny
to penny. She was a deceiver. And many
people were willing to give to the Catholic religion because
of the way she looked. They thought she was such a pure
servant of God. She was a wicked woman. She knows
better now, but it's too late. But you see, we need to understand
that your soul is far more precious than money. And so you need to
take care of your soul. Where is your soul going when
you die? And Jesus points out, so is he
that loveth, layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich toward
God. If you're only concerned about
this life, if you're only concerned about what you can get here,
if that's your main concern, if that's where you're, focuses,
that's where your energy is spent, you better be careful. Because
if you're more concerned about this life and the things that
you can get here, not about eternity, what happens when you die? Now
again, we don't earn heaven. But this man, it says again,
we go back to verse 17, he thought within himself, So it wasn't
that this man, that it was only his money that was the issue
here, but it was his heart. His heart was not right with
God. And that's the issue in verse 20. This night thy soul
shall be required of thee. So this man was careless and
not considering the need of his soul. but he was looking at this
world. And he was thinking, I've got
all this treasure, I'm gonna sit back and just take it easy. I'll sell enough grain to buy
groceries, to take that next trip that I wanna go on, to buy
some new clothing, but I'm not going to sell it to feed the
poor. I'm going to hang on to what I have, and just take it
easy. I'll have a servant so I can
have someone to bring me that next burger that I want or that
bottle of wine I want to drink and so on. I'll just have servants
for that, but I'm just gonna live it up. And there's a danger if we're
not rich to our God. So there are people who count
their pennies. And they make sure that if they're
going to tithe, they're going to count and calculate it out
to the penny. And yes, the tithe is 10%. But if you're concerned, that
concern that you're going to give 10% and not a penny over,
your heart's not in the right place. Bible says we need to
be rich toward God. And so While there are religions
out there that are stealing your money, they're convincing you
to give more and more and more, you also need to be careful in
your own heart. Are you willing to give? Can
you see the value of the preaching of the gospel? And that should
be uppermost in your mind, that you're willing to give to the
work of God because you want to see the gospel spread. You
want to see people coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ as
their savior. You want to help others to know
the truth. That ought to be a concern to every born-again Christian.
In fact, it will be a concern to every born-again Christian.
But the world just looks at it for what's in it for me. What
can I gain? That's all the world thinks about.
Those of us that are saved need to help the world to see there
are things more important. And so don't be concerned about
how much you have in the bank. Be concerned about your spiritual
well-being. And if you're concerned about
that, if that's where your treasure is, if that's what you're interested
in, God's gonna help you to be able to look after the material
needs that you have. He may let you get rich. He may,
but you may not get rich, doesn't matter. Live for the Lord, put
him first, and make sure that you're laying aside that treasure
for your children, that they can look back on your life and
say, my parents didn't leave me much in material things, but
they certainly had a good testimony of serving God, they loved God.
And they helped me to see the importance of loving God too.
They showed me that loving God is not a grievous thing. That
I can get by quite well if I love God, first of all. That's the
kind of testimony God wants us to be able to leave for our children,
as well as for others. And so the challenge in this
text here today is be careful. Be careful what your goal is,
materialism or spirituality. And be careful not to put materialism
above spirituality. Live for God, serve Him, make
Him your goal, make Him your priority, and show others the
importance of knowing the true God. And if you're listening
and they're not saved, again, that's the place to start. Ask
God to forgive you. Ask God to save you. Because
that's the most important thing. To know his peace in your heart
and live for him. Let's pray together. Heavenly
Father, we're thankful this morning again that we have thy word.
Thankful again for the truthfulness of thy word. And how important
it is for us to see the things that are really important in
life. Knowing thee. memorizing scripture, being able
to help others to know the truth as well. Showing them that even
when a person dies and there's others in the family that are
grieving that loss, that we can help them. We can be a true comfort
to them and help them to see that there is hope beyond the
grave. And if that person had died, if they truly knew thee
as their God and Savior, They're in heaven. They're free from
bondage. They're not suffering from anything
anymore in this world. They're free. And so that's the
most important thing, to know Thee, to live for Thee. We pray
for each one that's listening today, that each one would see
the importance of setting their priorities in order. That they're
dealing with the need of their soul, first of all. and then
able to help others in that area as well. We're thankful that
we have a God who knows of our physical needs and supplies them. So we don't need to be worried
about, where's my next meal going to come from? What we need to
be concerned about, not worried about, but concerned about is
our spiritual well-being. Help us to allow thee to direct
us in these things that we can know thy blessing in our hearts
and lives. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.
Materialism Over Spirituality
Series Luke
Riches can be a blessing. Too often they become a god. If they become a god, they rob us of that which our soul needs. We need to know the true God in order to be able to deal with riches properly.
