So thankful everybody was able to find their way in after all of the, I'm sure, the confusing road construction out here. But Duran, Cindy, I just want to thank you all for being here. What a privilege it is going to be for us today. Amen. As we witness that which the Lord himself has instituted, that which came from his own mind, holy matrimony. And I'm certainly looking forward to that. With that being said, let's all pray together this afternoon. Father, we We thank you again for your loving kindness for us. Father, we pray this afternoon as we are gathered together here, that you will be glorified. Father, that the Lord Jesus Christ will be lifted on high. Father, that those who are saved in the room here this afternoon, those who are Christians, that they will be edified in the service. And Father, we also pray for those who are lost, the sinners who are here, who are not yet saved. We pray for them, Father, that they will be convicted in the service. And Father, again, we thank you for your loving kindness. We thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ. We thank you for his death, his burial, his resurrection, which is the gospel, Paul said. Father, we thank you for that. Now, may you be honored, may you be glorified, may you be lifted on high as we work our way through this all of these things in the name of your beloved son, the Lord Jesus Christ. And it's in his name we pray and all God's people say amen. The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend. The agonies of Calvary. You, the perfect holy one. washed away my sin. Jesus, thank you. For your faithfulness and steadfast love, receive the glory, the glory belongs. Amen. All right, baby, see you this afternoon. I didn't realize my mic wasn't live, so I was trying to act like I was singing and not sing very loud. That's not one of the talents God has given me is to sing. So I just want to welcome everybody here. You'll notice that everybody sat down. And that's never good when one sits down in a Baptist church. Because those who are regular attenders here may know how how i am and so uh what a privilege what an honor it is for me to stand here and to be a part of this for sure and uh you guys remember when we began our our premarital um counseling one of the things that i was so thankful for as with peter and nicole as well is that uh their parents both of the parents Both families, amen, had trained them up in the admonition of the Lord. And so it was such a joy for me to be able to look at scripture and be able to just counsel them through some things and knowing and understanding that they have good families, good, solid, godly families, where they were able to see some good examples in their marriages from their parents, amen. And that was such a blessing, and it is such a blessing for us here this afternoon as well. And really, that's a generational thing, brethren. That's a generational thing. That's a godly, biblical thing that we should be doing as parents. We should be passing them godly traits, them godly characters through the marriages in our homes on down to our children, amen? Our grandchildren, the children after that. And that was such a blessing. We saw that last night when I saw John and the young guys were up there telling some stories as well. But I kept thinking in my mind, you know, what a blessing that is that these children saw. these godly examples, and that now it's being passed on down. And that's such a wonderful thing, especially in the, of course, the world we live in today, amen? And one of the things that I want to talk for just a moment, well, a couple of hours possibly, We see many things in the book of Genesis. We hold and believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of God. The 66 books that we have are given to us by God, and they are His authority for the authority of our lives. And we see God creating marriage in Genesis. Early on in Genesis, He creates Adam, and then there's none found for Him. And so He brings this beautiful woman to Him. He creates Eve. brings them to her, and creates this wonderful institution called marriage. That which God comes from the mind of God, not from the mind of men. And it isn't very long, brother, it isn't very long before we see in the book of Genesis, it was good, it was holy, all of these things were good and holy, and by the time we get to Genesis chapter 6, we see for the first time an unholy marriage. And I want to look at that here for just a moment this afternoon. In Genesis chapter 6, let me just read the words of God to you, amen, because that's all we have. That's what we have to share with you this morning. I want you to notice each other, particularly as we see this in Genesis chapter 6. One of the first unholy, ungodly marriages. And then, what comes of that? And that is really, really important for us to examine that and to try and understand that, that we might have godly marriages. In Genesis chapter 6, the Bible says, And it came to pass when men began to multiply on the earth. Brethren, when men began to multiply on the earth, you know what else multiplies? Sin. Sin multiplies. As men grew, sin multiplied. Because men are sinners, all men. are sinners. And so we see that in this chapter here as we look at this. And the Bible says, on the face of the earth, the daughters were born unto them. Now, verse number two gives us an indication about why these marriages were unholy, brother, why they were ungodly. And I want you to listen carefully to the Word of God. Listen to what it says. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair. Now, brothers, listen, isn't it wonderful that we have beautiful wives? Amen. All the men should be going, Amen, that's right. We want our wives to be beautiful, brethren, but it's much deeper than that. It has to be much deeper than that. There's something that God instills in a Christian marriage that is deeper than just looking at the outer person. And we look here, listen to what the Bible says. It says, And they took them wives, all of which they chose. So you ask yourself, what's wrong with these marriages? Well, first of all, brother, the first part that's wrong with this marriage is that they chose wives only by what they saw. Again, that's a problem, brother. It's good to have beautiful wives, and we want to have beautiful wives, but again, it has to be much deeper. What's wrong? Secondly, they follow the choice with their own corrupt affections, brother. versus allowing God to bring things together like He's done here. And by the way, can I just say, I've been getting a lot of credit for this, and actually, I don't deserve that much credit. God deserves the credit, but my wife, too, Amen, she kind of arranged that little meeting for us, so what an amazing thing. We see God, and that was one of the things I really saw last night, again, as we were together. Sovereign God working out the plan, working out His perfect plan, as we always talk about. You couldn't make this up. You cannot orchestrate this if you try. God brought these two together in this godly marriage. What I want you to see here, brother, as we follow along in our text, just for a moment, the Bible says that they chose these women, they saw that they were fair, they chose of their own corrupt natures. And then verse number three, it says, And the Lord said, My spirit shall not outscribe this man, for he also is flesh, yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. And we know what happened. We know that Noah preached for 120 years. He built the ark. We were talking, I was talking to my brother last night about this. Went down to the ark encounter. He creates, he creates this wonderful thing. God says, these men are becoming more and more increasingly wicked. And this is what happens. You get unholy unions. And the next thing you know, things really spiral out of control, brother. Completely and totally out of control when this happens. Verse 5 says, And God saw that the wickedness of men was great in the earth, and that every imagination and thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Brethren, think of that for a moment. Sometimes I have, maybe I'm just different, sometimes I have evil thoughts. Did you know that? Yes, pastors have evil thoughts. But think how God has just described this. Moses, as he's led by the Spirit of God to write this, tells us that every thought was only evil continually. We cannot even hardly begin to grab and get a hold of what that is. But we see the downward spiral of what takes place when these unholy unions are together. Look here, if you would, at verse Number 11, God says that Moses wrote on the inspiration, the earth also was corrupt. Notice how many times he uses these words, corrupt, before God and the earth was filled with violence. He says this in verse number 12, and God looked upon the earth and behold it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. Verse 13 says, and God said unto Noah, the end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is filled with violence through them. destroy them with the earth. So we see, for the first time, something that is unholy. This unholy matrimony, this thing that these men were doing, these women were doing, it ended, brethren, with the great flood. It destroyed everybody, but what? Eight people. Noah, the preacher of righteousness, and his family. Well, this is a continual thing that we see in Scripture, brethren. When you begin to go outside the bounds of holy writ, When you begin to go outside the bounds of God Himself, His prescriptions, all we see is a continual downward spiral. It is a most stunning and amazing thing. In fact, in Romans chapter 1, we see this again. I want you to see this, brethren, again. We're laying the stage for the text. It always takes me a while to get to the text, amen? But you gotta lay the groundwork because this is so needful. for you guys. Listen, your generation, I was talking with Wendy, brethren, their generation is so different. It's so kind of weird, you know what I mean? They live in such an unholy generation. It is such an unholy thing. And they must continue to be steadfast in the Word. You must continue to be steadfast in your relationship with Christ because of what's coming. It's going to get worse and worse, brethren. little pattern that we see in Scripture. That's in the Old Testament. Men's hearts haven't changed. Our natures haven't changed. One iota. We're just as wicked today as we ever were. And you look here in Romans chapter 1, the Bible says here again, Paul, under the inspiration of God, wrote these words. He said this in verse 18, Well, the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven. Brethren, did you know here this afternoon that all unbelieving people are under the wrath of God? Every one of us, every one of you, if you're not a believer here this afternoon, the wrath of God is upon you. You don't even realize it yet, but you will. Paul wrote here, he says, for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. Hold the truth in unrighteousness. And that word literally is, they're holding that down as a spring. The truth of God is being held down by their wicked conscience. Amen. Now listen, brother. What is the result of that? What happens? What kind of unholy unions then are produced in this kind of an ungodly environment, this kind of ungodly people? I'm glad you asked. I mean, you guys are very inquisitive this afternoon. Listen carefully, brothers. Verse 24, wherefore God also gave them up to the uncleanness and the lust of their own parts. There it is again, brethren, see, there is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but in the end it leadeth to death. God's word must not be mocked. His rails, if you will, must never be changed, ever. He says, for this cause, God gave them up unto vile affections, for even their women did exchange natural abuse for that which is against nature. So, in other words, he's talking about the very thing we are seeing in our own nation right now. These unholy unions. Brother, he goes on farther because he gave them over the lusts of their own heart instead of sticking and following God's mandates. This is what society does. He says this, he says, and likewise also, men leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lusts one toward another, men with men working that which is unseemly, receiving in themselves that recompense of their error. which is meat, verse 28. And even as they did not like to retain God as their palace, God gave Him over to a reforming mind. God addressed all of the unholy unions there, didn't he? The verse before, he addresses, if you will, adultery. And of course, that's a word nobody ever uses anymore. It's an amazing thing. He addresses fornication, a word that no one ever uses anymore. That's outside of God's will. That is outside of God's will for the marriage. It's important, isn't it? We see this downward spiral. Let me show you one more. This is something we find in Scripture overall. Just a couple of verses. How long did you say I had? Everybody laughs. All right. 2 Timothy chapter 3. Timothy, or Paul writes this. He said, this know also that in the last days of perilous times, she'll come. and what perilous times are, and that word perilous there literally means dangerous. It literally means hazardous times. These times are coming in the last days, brethren. This is what Paul warns us about. In fact, that word literally means full of risk. We're entering into a time where it is full of risk. It's a dangerous time for Christians in the last days, especially those of us who hold to the Word of God, hold God, have a high view of God. Listen to how Paul then describes these perilous days. Listen to what he says. For men shall be lovers of their own selves. Brethren, I can promise you this. And can I talk to you for a moment? If you are a lover of your own self, number one, you will never love God. And number two, you will never love Sydney as you ought to. In fact, Paul writes here in verse number four, he says, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. If you love yourself more than you love God, you will never love her in the way that God instructs us to love our lives, brethren. Listen to how he describes it. When you're a lover of your own self, he says, there are covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unholy, unthankful. Does it ring a bell? Brethren, we're living in our society right now, as Paul, how relevant Scripture is for us. These unholy unions, listen to this, without natural affection, truce breakers. Brethren, this is what happens. Without natural affection, we know what that is. I just read it in Romans chapter 1. False accusers, incontinent, fierce despisers of those, haters of those, and despisers of those who are good. Brethren, holy scripture. is so relevant and needful for us, as we consider your guys' generation, your relationship in that generation. Marriage is such a beautiful picture, and it's something so much bigger than just us standing up here today, joining you two together, which is a most holy thing. But the reality of it is, brethren, When one lives this way, when one is outside of Christ, the wrath of God abides on them. Now, it's interesting, isn't it? Because in Scripture, you say, well, Pastor Mike, that's terrible. That's horrible. That's bad news. Brother, yes, it is. It is horrible, it is bad news, and that's how God designed it to be. Amen? But listen, brethren, there's good news. There's a phrase in Scripture that is one of my favorite phrases in all of Scripture, and it should be yours, too. But God. But God. Yes, in Ephesians chapter 2, all of us are condemned for being these kind of peoples. We're not good. The Bible says when we're outside of Christ, we are evil, we hate God. But God, brethren, but God who is rich in mercy, saved you if you're saved this morning. Save me, save you too, praise his name. By his mercy, by his mercy. The Bible says there in Ephesians chapter two, with the great love with which he loved us. How did God love us? How did God love us? Sinners condemned unclean. Imagine your marriage, Mighty, and I talk about this all the time. We see lost people living their lives in such an amazing way. So unholy, so unholy, so unholy. We always say, praise God's holy name that he saved us. He changed our hearts that we might love one another as we ought to. Brethren, how did God love us? I'm glad you asked. Again, another inquisitive question from all of you here this afternoon. How did God love us? What does that mean, that God loved us? That's the good news of the gospel. Amen? I mean, the bad news is we're all sinners. In fact, there's none that doeth good. No, not one. There's non-righteous. No, not one. Unless you think you're different and you're not. But God, But God loved us in this way. Let me just share with you guys just the beautiful experience that you can have within your marriage because of what Christ has done. Because what Christ has done for you and done for you and for every man and woman and child in this room who was saved. Let me show you how God loved us. Let me show you this. See, it's a cardinal sin for a pastor to get up and just speak evil and bad news. You must speak evil and bad news, because the Bible does that. But you should never leave one there. Never should you leave them there, because God did not leave us there. Let me show you here in 1st John. 1st John is a unique book in Holy Scripture. Most books of the Bible, you begin at the beginning. 1st John, chapter 1, verse 1. Not this one. Because in this one, you begin in chapter 5. Because you go to chapter 5, and John wrote on the inspiration of God, I have written these things that you may know. that you who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ might know. Well, what things? What things have you written, John? Well, the first five chapters, one, two, three, four, and five. You go there and you're looking to say, is this me? Is this my general life? Is this what I, not perfection, but direction? Am I holy because Christ made me holy? Look how God loved us. In fact, 1 John chapter 4 really is the love chapter in the Bible. Many think it's 1 Corinthians 13. There's some wonderful characteristics of love there. But actually, 1 John chapter 4 defines what love is. Defines where love comes from. Defines who love is. And the Bible says here in verse number 9, it says, and this was manifested, the love of God towards us. That word manifest means to reveal. God's love was revealed. How was God's love revealed to sinners who are condemned to die? Through His Son, Jesus Christ. Listen to what He says. He was manifested, He was revealed, the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him, here in His love, This is what I'm talking about. This is defying biblical love. What is it, Brother John? What is it here in His love? Not that we love God, but that He first loved us. And He sent His Son to be the propitiation. I told you I was gonna use that big word. Most people have never even heard that word, propitiation. What is it? It means that God's wrath was appeased. It means to appease. God's wrath was appeased in the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he gave to save sinners. Think of this. People always look and say, oh, look at that phrase up there. Somebody else put that up there. I didn't. It's an amazing thing. You know why, brother? It is amazing to think, listen, brother. I almost saw the time, I'm getting close. Think of this for a moment. It is an amazing thing to understand that God who knew no sin. He was perfect, sinless, without sin. Brethren, think of this. You know what the Bible says, for God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Christ. That's good news, brethren. That's an amazing thing to consider. How can two sinners come together, save sinners, but still sinners? How can two sinners come together and God say that is a good thing? The only way you can function and love as you were to love is to follow this prescription. God's prescription. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Well, that's a high task. That's a high demand. but it's God's standard. God loved us by sending his son, dying for your sins. He took your place. How can we not love one another in that fashion? This is really what he's saying. In fact, let me finish. Let me just bring this to a close. He, then in chapter five, The first three verses. This really is God's divine order. This is God's divine faith. This is saving faith. This is God's grace and action. He tells us how God loved us, and then he says, this is what we should look like. And that's what I'm saying. That's why you start in chapter five. I wrote these things that you may know. So you ask yourself this afternoon, if you're married, if you're not married, have you trusted in Christ as your Lord and Savior? As Christ changed your heart, changed your mind, changed your affections towards Him. This is how you will know. The Bible says in chapter 5 verse 1, Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. So we see a divine order here. We see, first of all, that one must be born again. One must be born again. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. That's one of the first orders of things in God's divine order in chapter 5. The first thing is being born again. In fact, that word, believe it there, John loved that word. That's a word that was in the perfect tense. That means it's ongoing. It means every believing one, every believing one is born of God. Past tense, that's a one-time action. When God saves you, you trust in Christ. He saves you. That's a one-time action. The believing is a continuing thing through your whole life. That's what John is saying. This is how we know. It isn't just in some mental dissent. I believe you have the Bible, that thing. You know that Bible thing? You know, we had some friends one time, and he gave God the glory of his wife one day, and he goes, yeah, God, you know that thing, God thing, you know. No, God. Christ. The second thing we notice, brethren, is this. You two are born again. Clearly there's godly fruit coming from a godly man, which is such a blessing. But the second thing we see here, when one is born again, your affections for God change. Yeah, your affections for God change. In fact, John writes here, he says, the one who is born of God, and everyone that loveth him, that begot loveth him also. In other words, your love for God changes. When God saves you, you're born again, then your affections towards Him change. This is what John is saying. This is how we know. This is how we know that we're children of God. Third thing there, he writes, we're almost done. By this we know that we love the children of God. So Christ, you're born again, you love God, your affections for God change and your affections for one another change. your affection towards one another changes. This is the definition of biblical love. It's not Hollywood love, brethren. Thirty, well, Lord willing, thirty years from now, forty years from now, all your looks are going to be fading. I don't know if you know that or not. Does everybody know that? I know that. And one of the things that I've learned And my relationship with my wife is that our love for one another is Christ-like love. Because we're faithful. Honey, you're not. I don't know where she's at, but I am. You never say that about your wife. Honey, you look beautiful. You're as beautiful today as you always have been. But that's the love we're talking about. The sacrificial love. Love like Christ loves the Church. That's how you have to love one another. and your perverse generation. Finally, as we finish, there's a love for God, there's a love for one another and brethren. Here's another indicator. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commands, and His commandments are not grievous. What does that mean? It means that we love God's Word. It means that we love God, we love His Word, and we are obedient to His Those are indicators of a child with God, someone who loves God, because He first loved us. You say, well, what does all that have to do with all of this? It has everything to do with it. It is the foundation of your relationship. It is the foundation of every relationship. Every Christian, every man and woman, it has to be that foundation. In fact, Paul writes One more verse, ladies and gentlemen, and we'll be done. What does it have to do with it? It has everything to do with it. It is the foundation of it all. If you hear in Ephesians chapter 5, or read this scripture, we'll be done. Listen to what it says. He instituted this right in the middle, speaking about Christ and the Church. That's what this is. Marriage, unity. This holy unity. Instead of an unholy, it's a godly, holy unity that God has ordained. Paul says, for this cause, shall a man leave his father and mother, and she be joined unto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Listen to what he says. This is a great mystery, Paul wrote, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Brethren, this is what this is. It is holy matrimony. It is a coming together of you two together. But it's much bigger. It's Christ in the Church. It's a picture of what Christ does for the sinner, for the lost sheep, who trusts in Him, puts their faith in Him. He brings them and makes them as one into the Church. And that's what you're experiencing. This is what will be a beautiful... Can I say that in one word? Harmonious. People love that when I say harmonious. God, Christ, the center of your relationship will make your harmonious. It will be a most loving and beautiful thing, for sure. Let's pray. Let's pray together. Fathers, we just pray quickly. We thank you for Duran and Sydney, as they're about to take their vows one to another. Father, we thank you for what we're going to witness and see. For us from you is a gift of God for sure. Father, we love you and thank you. We pray in Jesus' name, all God's people said, amen. He said to me, I've anticipated this day since I was young. And now through God's sovereign plan, I'm standing here today to make a public declaration of what he has done by drawing us to himself and to each other. He said, you are beautiful inside and out. And after meeting you, God says, keep the relationship with the Lord, with a kind spirit in your heart. I love that about you. You're always so merciful to me and what I have brought to you. You are tender, loving, and faithful. Today, I promise to pray for you, watch you in the Word daily, and promise to be a leader and do the right thing even when it's hard. I love you. My prayer for today, and every day, is that God be with you all the time. Early on in our engagement, we've been obsessed with the importance of this relationship. We've said something to each other. From this marriage, knowing that our Savior saw that in him, and brought us to this very time, we have to call each other to the forefront. Apart from salvation, we will be receiving God's emergent healing. I love how thoughtful you are, how you're always willing to do whatever you can. I love how patient you are with me, and I love you more each and every day. I promise to follow you and to follow Christ. I promise to make the Gospel the subject of my ministry. I promise to be an encourager, a supporter, and a helper. I promise to do all these things of the grace of God and to help Christ return to us. We've got the rings there, Daryl. All right. I almost woke up in a cold sweat last night because I was responsible for having the bottles in my pocket and knowing who was whose. And I told Stephen, remind me, remind me, remind me. So he put those in. All right. Now it's kind of the time that we've been praying for and waiting for. And I grant, I have you repeat after me. In the presence of God, our family and friends, I do promise to love you, to comfort you, to honor and keep you, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. Forsaking all others, I'll be faithful only to you, till death do us apart. All right, Sidney, you ready? All right. I, Sidney, take you, Durant, to be my lawfully wedded husband. In the presence of God, our family and friends, I do promise to love you, to comfort you, to honor and keep you, for better or for worse, for richer We'll be faithful only to you until death do us part. You're mine, always You're mine, forever You're my reality You're my sunshine You're my best times You're my anomaly And I'd choose you In a hundred lifetimes I'd choose you In a hundred worlds I'd find you And I'd say I do For the rest of my life With all that I have, I do And I will When the sky is falling I promise you I'm all in No turning back And every day And every moment Every breath you take I choose you This is More than just a wedding This is etched into eternity With our union we will move mountains We will live on our knees Cause he chooses ice In a hundred lifetimes he'd choose us In a hundred worlds he'd find us And we'd say we do For the rest of our lives With all that we have we do And we will When the sky turns black And he comes back Riding on the clouds Every day And every moment Every breath we take We choose you Look into my eyes, dear Look into my eyes, dear Cause this is where it starts Yeah, this is where it starts I'll give you my whole heart for mine And this is where it starts And I'll say I do For the rest of my life With all that I have I do And I will When the sky is falling I promise you I'm all in No turning back And every day And every moment Every breath you take I choose Well, as God has ordained it to be, again, marriage is God's institution, and as He has ordained it to be, I pronounce you husband and wife. Wow! We're going to get ready. We'll watch this slide after that. And after that, we can all feed this biscuit. Right back over to the fellowship. All back over there where? That's just coffee outside. Oh, coffee outside. Coffee bar. Coffee bar outside. All right. We'll be like that. We now just like to eat free, because we always talk about food. So let's just have some free moments. How far did you come down? Okay. This way. Dude, I need help! Come here! Come here!
