What exactly is the Perseverance of the Saints?

I consider what exactly is meant by this reformed doctrine "The perseverance of the Saints"? I look at the dangers every Christian must face, the promises given by God, the duty laid upon every one of us and the heaven we are assured of reaching. It is not simply the preservation of the saints but the perseverance of the saints.
