Father, we thank Thee for Thy
love and for Thy grace. Thank Thee that Thou hast allowed
us to be able to have a copy of Thy words in our language on account
of what happened to Thy church of people and children of Israel
thousands and thousands of years ago. Allow us to learn from and
allow us to do what God wants to do and avoid those things
that we should not do. In Jesus' name, amen. All right,
so we are still in the book of Deuteronomy. We're going to be
in chapter 5 today. And we'll see what comes of that. Deuteronomy chapter 5. So it's,
are the Watkins not well? Not yet. I'm expecting, there
was something going on even. Well, I know they're not well,
but. Going on in the week. He was determined he was not
going to be able to come again today. It's probably related
to the automobile problem, I think. And- Is this the same problem
that he had last week? Yes, it's related. It's related
because it's not completely resolved yet. The problem he had last
week has not been resolved yet. Oh, John is here. Oh, hi, John. Good. You were driving another
car last night. It was. Otherwise, we'll find
something. Why don't you show up in vaults
where I can get my head from that? Very sharp, that's it. Hi, Ben. Tell them to switch
over to live feed. Are the others up there? No, you've got the archive feed. OK, we have a live stream. And the others are fine. Because that's a small detail. It's too bad he can't control
it from where he's at. He's got to figure out a way.
There is a way to do that, but I don't think more money than we have on us. OK, so your car is going
to be finished sometime next week, John? I hope so. The roof of the car will be.
It's not in yet. But it's still in the boat. Do
you feel any better than you were yesterday? Yes, I'm tired,
but yes. I found out on the way home what
the problem was. Yeah, thank you. For me, especially
in summertime, probably, sometimes that happens. It really happens
all the time. It can happen any time. Hydrated
with lots of water. I went through lights and all
that type of stuff. So, uh... So, it's a combination
of diagrams and acronyms. Yeah, that's true. Acronyms complicate
this stuff. Amplifies it. I'm sure it does.
So, we're doing a... We're studying Deuteronomy Chapter
5. And, again, just to refresh what happened, what's going on
with Deuteronomy. The Book of Exodus records the
events when the Chaldeans were coming out of the land of Egypt. And there are a lot of these
special events coming into the promised land, or just about
to come into the promised land. The problem is, there are people involved. And
people sometimes do things that they want to do, and not things
that God wants them to do. And so we have these people involved. The people, the very people who
witnessed what God did to bring them out of the land of Egypt
with a mighty hand, these are the very people that said, there's
no way. This can't happen. How can we
count on this land of the king? And so we get to the point of
the fact of the 10 spies and the two spies. We all know Joshua
and Caleb. And the only other one I know
is some guy called Nave or something, whether Nave or Nave, Nave or
something like that. And there's not the, we can both adopt their
names. But the 10 we'll listen to, the 10 spices, yeah, it's
a beautiful land, but there's only big people there. There's
only big walls that are there. There's no way to, They were
having a hard time trusting what God could do. Okay, thanks. Thanks,
Gordon. I hope you could stay to listen to some of it here.
We're in Deuteronomy chapter 5. We've been studying what we can
do around here for the last five weeks now. And so the idea, someone
said they liked the video. I'm not sure, Gordon said he
liked the video. So Gordon, thank you for liking the video. And
Gordon's from Michigan. Does he get the pictures that
are up on that screen too? He does not. Oh, okay. He just
gets the one that's in the upper left up there. It's that one.
Oh, okay. Or whatever. The upper left? I mean, there's
a switch we can push back there to make them perform even more,
I think. But then the problem is, then
the one in the top left kind of becomes everything, kind of
as a funny little trick. The idea of how they saw the
mighty hand of God. They saw what the mighty hand
of God could do for them there in Egypt. Ten plagues. The Red Sea. Water out of a rock. And yet, when they get to the
land, the man from the heaven, and when they come to the land,
they say, wait a minute. We can't have victory. And so God was, I think the word
is used, wrath. God was very wrath. He was very
angry and upset with them. And so, they were also a different
generation. It was about going to that land,
too. Well, here in the Book of Deuteronomy,
it was a different generation. Yeah. At the exodus, like you
said, there's orbital space. Yeah. In Europe, we have it in
the Book of Deuteronomy. He's talking about a different
generation. But the reason why it could be
their parents' generation is because of the fact that is because
of the fact that the parents didn't have the faith. I mean,
some of them were there. We know that anyone who was probably
the age of 20, they were there. So some of these people, although
they were younger, not their age, but 20 years. They still
saw God part the city. And some of them were there.
Some of these people were there. I mean, you're probably during
this time We have, I'm trying to contrast what we do in the
book of Exodus. Because like you said, Bill,
there's a four-year space, approximately four-year space between the leaving
of the promised land, leaving Egypt, and going into the promised
land. There's a four-year space. I'm
trying to explain, why is there a space? Why is there a gap? The gap is there because the
generation that came out of Egypt And when they were there, they
were real close. Like we are real close to Philadelphia. They
were real close to the land where they were supposed to go. And
they said, OK, there's 12 tribes. All right, each of you, 12 tribes,
get together. Put your heads together. And
we want one man from each of your tribes to go ahead, go over
to Jordan, sneak over to Jordan, and to spy out the land. Is that right? I've had 16 COVID-19 tests. I
thought it was 18. I'm losing track. I thought it
was 60. Do you think it's 18? I thought
that was the message you sent this morning. I think I typed
it wrong. I probably typed it wrong. Yesterday,
by the way. I have it written down in the
calendar. I'll double check. I told the dentist's office it
was 18. Whatever it was. It was close
enough. It was a lot. It's not as easy
as a Q-tip. It's smaller. So, but still,
it goes up and it turns this way, and then it goes up and
it turns that way. It went up to your brain. It's a nasal cavity. There's a canal, like a canal
thing that may be drawn over to say, are those your ears,
or somehow. Side distance. So, it comes over
probably over here, and then they do a nod. It's 12 meters
over here. I don't have anything up there.
I know, so I guess... You don't have a brain? No. That's
what my mother used to tell me. And so, anyway, so I'm sorry
about the erosion of the test, my testing. But the idea, what
is happening is that these, this generation, some of them were
there. They remember. I mean, can we
remember things that have been yesterday? Can we remember some
things that happened 40 years ago? Four years ago. So that would be 1980. That doesn't seem like four years
ago, does it? No. And so, yes? I was just going to say, I got
a text message a little while ago from Paul. He said he tried
for about 10 minutes to get on. He was in the pool when he tried
to get on. So anyway. I think he maybe was
just, Tom, I just turned it on. So maybe, I mean, I may have
just turned it on. Just, I just, try and do it again. Okay. Because it had a re-off system
that wasn't on yet. He said he did the Bible study.
Oh, good. So I'm trying to get Paul connected
here. John, do you have Paul's phone
number? I think so. We're good. Do you want me to call? Just call him to ask him to get
connected. Have him try to get the connection
one more time and phone him. I'm sending him a text message. Got it. And so four years ago, some of
us remember 98. I'm trying to put this in perspective
from what there are some of these people that are there to remember.
Now, people that perhaps were born in 19, you know, in the
early golden age, I guess, to go back more. Now, the problem
is that that means that we were
born likely over four years old. probably over 20 years old. And so, nonetheless, going, the
beginning of the Book of Deuteronomy is talking about the people that
are gonna go into the land. Exodus is the people that came
out of Egypt, and there's a four-year gap. And so, when they came out
of Egypt, shortly after they came out of Egypt at Sinai, that
generation was given the law. I'm not Sinai. Now we have a new generation
coming. Some of them, since some of them
have been there, I remember not signing. But some of them were
too young to remember. Because they could be three, four, five.
I mean, there are certain events that children can remember. But at a certain age, children
will not be able to remember. Clearly, I'm sure if they think,
there are events that we can remember when we were five, or
six, or seven. But when we're one year old,
I'm not sure if we can remember much going on when we were one
year old. Not much at all. So maybe I gave him one or two
events, but I was four. Or five. But not much. We didn't
give him much. So we have the second given of
the law. So let's read some of these verses.
It's in the text, Mr. Kennedy? It's several, yes. And Moses called all Israel and
said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which
I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them and keep
and do them. The Lord our God made a covenant
with us in Horeb. In John verse 3. Oh, you're on mute, John. There
it is. Can you hear me now? Yes, I can hear you. OK, part
three, right? Yes. Oh, you went back and mute, John,
somehow. I'm not sure why. And it also froze. I can read. The Lord made not
this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are
all of us here alive this day. For I talk with you face to face
in a mount, out of the midst of the fire. And let's read through
one more time. I stood between the Lord and
you at that time to show you the word of the Lord, for you
were afraid by reason of the fire and what not, into the mount,
saying, I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the
land of Egypt from the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none
other gods before me. Thou shalt not make any Rabbi,
thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness
of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth
beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth. So looking back here to verse
one for a moment, did Father respond to the text or not? I
haven't heard anything. Neither have I. So, you sent
a message too, John? Okay, good. Hopefully he's got
the right phone number. I trust that phone number hasn't
changed, but we'll see. Who did Moses call and what was
he going to speak? So we have, again, Moses' age. The life of Moses is broken up
into three categories, three sections. 40 years, 40 years,
and 40 years. The first 40 years of his life,
he was raised as the prince of Egypt, as the son of
Pharaoh's daughter. And in the next 40 years, what
caused him to leave Egypt? What happened? Well, we called him to deliver
the children of Israel. out of bondage. And there were
10 plagues, and in the 10th plague they all left. That's when he
left Lydian, which would cause him to leave Lydian. The guy
wanted him to deliver him. So we have 40 years in Egypt,
and in the region 140, we'll say roughly around 41 to 80,
he was a with his father-in-law, and he
found a new way. When he fled into making the race shoes, you
know, the cloud he worked for, his father-in-law helped him
start them off. I'm sorry, I thought you meant... No, no, you gave
me a good answer. I misunderstood your question.
It's a good question, isn't it? I'm sorry. And John's got his
hand up. John, go ahead. Continue on with
your comment, John. His hand is stuck. Yeah, I think
one of the questions, why did he leave the ship? What's your question? Why did
he leave Egypt? Well, that's the question you
heard, John. That's the question Sam answered. OK, I did hear
your question. He left Egypt because he claimed
to be Egyptian and was here for his wife. OK. OK. He left Egypt
twice. He did. He did, he left Egypt
twice. He had a vagina, that's right. He saw, he went out, he
was seeing how his brother were doing, Israelites, and he noticed
an Egyptian that was beating up on an Israelite. So, he got
upset, he killed the Egyptian, he buried him in the sand, he
thought everything was okay. Who's gonna know? Well, the next
day, he saw two Hebrews, two Hebrew men fighting each other,
and then, They said, who do you think you are? What, are you
going to kill me like you killed the Egyptian? And so probably, well, not probably,
likely, the Israelites, the Hebrews, were saved when he told a few
people. And so the word was out that
Moses had slain an Egyptian. And so he feared for his life. And he ran. Jews were not very smart, they
should have bribed Moses. He was in a rich family and they
probably could have got a lot of money from him. Bill, that's all you ever think
about, isn't it? I have no idea. I have no idea
what would have happened. A fare, a cost for sitting in
a chair. idea of bribing someone for money,
anything for money, right, Bill? Did you get, did I give you everything
you ordered? Oh, I need a bag of 20s. Well,
the problem with Goldander is, you know, then Pharaoh would
know if Pharaoh knew that he was of Egyptian lineage. Since we're off the subject,
I don't think that's really what Israel needed. They didn't need
money. It wouldn't have bought them freedom anyway. They needed
freedom. And they got their freedom. Three
years later, God gave them their freedom. He brought them out.
They came out, they saw all the wonderful works of God, and then
they had to wait. And now that generation passed
off. A new generation. And so Moses here in verse 1,
he calls all Israel together. And then, what he's going to
speak, he's going to speak all the statutes and judgments of
God. And he wants them to learn them and keep them. One of the
hard things to do is to learn and to keep. Sometimes we learn. Sometimes we may know. But then,
quite often, we fail to do. And we see through the entire
life of the people we read in the scripture, we do see their
spiritual success. Sometimes we're all reminded
of their spiritual failures that they are. people, human people. And so they're written for our
examples. So we have to know that we are people, human people.
We have a tremendous blessing to have a translation of the
words of God in our own language for a faithful, reliable translation
that we can have. And question number two, please.
Where did the Lord make a covenant with Israel in Horeb? Or isn't
that the same as Mount Sinai? Yes, that's right. Therefore,
it must have been a wonderful, fearful, it's wonderful, but
it was also fearful for them. The animals, if we look at the
book of Exodus a couple of years ago, a couple, whatever it was,
maybe a year or two ago, the animals were warning this horse
to come to the bottom of the mountain. Don't even touch the
bottom of the mountain. And so God made this wonderful
covenant with them. And we're able to hear it, hear the voice
of God. And with whom was the covenant
not made? The Lord made not this covenant with
our fathers, being Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But with us, because
they're separated by hundreds of years. 400 some years, 500
years, depends on how you count. I don't know how many parts I
sent, but hundreds of years. Tammy? So just thinking about
that, because when I was thinking fathers, I was thinking Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. Then I thought, oh, no, it was
their earthly fathers. But it seems like this law was
given to them, their earthly fathers, like one generation
back, their parents. So, he did make the covenant
with them. Okay, so, I understand what you're
saying. So, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He probably gave them the promise
of the land. So, I guess the question is, the ASC is worth
covenant. Well, but the fathers, They did
receive the Ten Commandments. Their fathers. Their physical
fathers, not their spiritual fathers, not Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob. But their physical fathers did
receive the covenant. So, it would have to be Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. The fathers in this verse are
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. So they were guided. Because
their parents did hear this. And so exactly, that's right. We have the math that they gave.
God promised Abraham land. I'm not going to argue with them.
I'm trying to go through and discuss. I'm not disagreeing
with your statement. But God didn't give Abraham the
Ten Commandments. God didn't give Jacob the Ten
Commandments. God didn't give Isaac the Ten
Commandments. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They
had covenanted with them and made them a great nation. Made
a promise to them. But not until Sinai was the law
given. They weren't a great nation.
Abraham wasn't a great nation. The promise was given. Isaac
wasn't a great nation, but the promise was still intact that
was given to Abraham. Jacob, who people use the name
of Israel, he was not a great nation until now, hundreds of
years later, over 40 years in Egypt, they come out. They go
in with 72 or 70, depending on if you count. They go in with
less than 100, about 70. And they come out with over $2 million, conservative
estimate. So you ironed that with $2 million,
Bill? And so did you iron that to $70 million? No. OK. So when they reviewed back the
book of Genesis for a moment, you know this information. I've
just got to put the pieces together a little bit better. When they
came out, the reason why they went to Egypt to begin with was
that there was a fame in the land. We know about the accounts
of Joseph and his 11 brothers. And the 11 brothers were really
upset with Joseph. Well, the 10, Geraint Benjamin
was involved in this. selling Joseph to slavers. So they said, well, what are
your purposes? Well, why should we kill him? Let's sell him.
We must have put in a deal. Maybe not, though. Let's sell
him. Let's get some money. I didn't
really mean that, though. I'm sorry. I said it, but they
said, let's sell. And so they sold him. We lost
John. I'm sorry, John. So they sold
him, and they made it look like he was killed. They took his
coat in many colors. His father made a special coat
for him. And they put a bunch of blood.
They killed an animal and put blood on it. And they brought
the coat back to the father and said, father, Is this cobalt familiar to you? Back then, cobalts were not mass-produced. So obviously, it was more like
a one-of-a-kind. And then he assumed, he jumped
to the wrong conclusions. Surely, he was slaying the beasts. So the animal got him, a bear,
a lion, and other kind of animals. The whale kind of animal got
him and killed him. And so he was very sore. Decades, he thought Joseph was
dead. But God brought him into the
land of Egypt for a reason. And even when he got to the land
of Egypt, he was working for Potiphar, Potiphar's wife, issued
a false accusation against Joseph, and he was put in a dungeon,
the Pharaoh's dungeon. And while he was there, the butler
and the baker of the pharaoh. They were the people that were
in close contact with the leader of Egypt. And those two men had a dream.
Both their dreams came true. The baker dreamed as Joseph interpreted
it, said he would be killed by Pharaoh. And the mother was restored
his position. And Joseph said, when you get
back to your position, don't forget about me. And so he got back, the mother
went back to this position, the cupbearer, the mother, and he
forgot about Joseph, until Pharaoh had agreed. And so he didn't
want to forget about him. He just, there was no, It's good that he didn't say,
hey, can we free this guy from jail? Because it would have accomplished
what God wanted to accomplish. But he remembered him when God
wanted him to be remembered. And so the fellow had a dream.
And, hey, there's a guy back two years ago or so who were
really mad at me in the paper. And we were in jail, and we met
this guy, a Hebrew fellow. And he was the interpreter of
my dream, being the interpreter of the baker's dream. The interpretation
is correct. Why don't you get him to interpret
your dream? And so that's how we have Joseph being raised to
the second in command in the land of Egypt. And while there,
the dream that Phil had was basically seven years of plenty, seven
years of famine. And so 30 to 70 years of plumbing,
they'd store up 20% of all their intake, put it away. And then in 70 years of famine,
they began to, what they didn't sell, but the storings they put
up. So the Egyptians invented putting
it around them. And there came a point in time when Jacob, Joseph
Jacob, and his brothers were out of food. So they took their
money, they went down to Egypt to buy food. They made several
trips, and one, and they said, all of a sudden, Joseph, they're
saving poor Joseph. And kind of at the end of the story, probably
at the end of the account of what happened, Joseph ends up
revealing himself to his brothers. They're terrified. They deal
with that. And then the whole family moves
to Egypt. And so with 12, brothers, their
12 brothers' wives, children, grandchildren, all the sons of
Jacob moved to Egypt. And there's about 70 of them.
And so they come to Egypt. And 470 years later, the number
of 70, they increase. We see when they leave Egypt,
we have 600, Scripture talks about 600,000 men. 600,000 men. And so the conservative
estimate, and these are men of war. These are men that are about
the age of 20. So the conservative estimate is each man of war has
one conceit, or could be married with one child. They're conservative. So that's 600,000 men, 600,000
women. 1,200, 1.2 million, and 600,000 couples,
that is. And then we have at least the
couples that had one child. That's 600,000 children. So that's
1.8 million people. That's how I came up with over
2 million. And that's a conservative number. So God is bringing them
out. So we have these 200 million
people. of that over to the people over
there in Sinai. They're really, they're a great
company. That's why the people were terrified of them. You had
millions of people walking, well, not millions of people, millions
of people walking through the wilderness. You had like the
whole city of Philadelphia walking around. Yeah, exactly. I mean,
these, there was order to it, but still, But they're walking
in a really fashion, yes, just like the whole city of Philadelphia. Like the illegal immigrants crossing
the border? Exactly. I don't even know how
many of them there were. I can't remember. I wonder what
that means. Maybe 300,000. But the idea of
when you multiply that by 10 or by whatever number, how much
more? What's happening? So this is
what God did for them. that God's promise was being
fulfilled. The promise that God made to
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is being fulfilled. Bill, question number four. How
did the Lord talk to them face-to-face, and from where did He talk to
them? In the mouth, out of the midst of the fire. Which is interesting. On the top of Mount Sinai, God
was there. He spoke to them. God came down
and spoke to them amidst the fire. Now, we know that God spoke
to Moses out of the fire of the burning bush. And here God's
speaking to them. They will be recipients of the
law. They will receive the law. And what were they afraid? And Moses says, I stood between
you and the water. is they, the scripture says here
in verse five, you were afraid by reason of the fire and went
not up. They were supposed to stay down,
they didn't go up, they were afraid, for it was so. People have to
have this same type of fear today. John, question number six, please.
Oh, please John, please stand, it's your verse. Before you go,
take a picture of her. Exodus 19, 18. Can I talk to
you about that? Okay, Exodus 19, 18. And the Mount Sinai was altogether
on smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire, and the smoke
thereof ascended as the smoke of the furnace, and the whole
mount quaked greatly. That's all. They're all quick.
There's another passage in 2417 that I won't read now. Okay,
please read Exodus 2417. Three cross references. So the first one was Exodus 19,
19. The second cross reference is
Exodus 24, 17. The sight of the glory of the
Lord was like a devouring fire over the top of the mount in
the eyes of the children of Israel. They which not come before the
Lord, and this is the first commandment, verse number seven, no other
gods, nothing, but one true God comes first. I think John did six. Did you
do six, John? John, did you answer question
six? Yes. That's question six. Question
six. So where did the Lord bring them? He brought them out of
bondage from the land of Egypt. Okay, so I think that's good.
Thanks. God brought them out. God's the one that brought them
out. And so here, this is repeated
in the book of Exodus. It was the first time on Mount
Sinai, it was the first time they received the Ten Commandments.
But now this is somebody else. This is another group of people
that's receiving them. The commandments haven't changed.
And so in verse 7, we're not reminded of the first commandment.
I will set no other gods before me. That's the first commandment.
And gods, they take all sorts of forms. But any man who hates
the place of God is a god. Tammy, a question over here.
Why would they not make an engraved image or likeness of anything
in heaven or on earth or in the water? OK, so sometimes people
have. So I guess it could be a molten
image, too. I mean, so that craven would
be engraved, right? Mm-hmm, yes. How would it be?
Out of wood? Yeah, I guess wood or, um. And
they engrave metal, I guess. Metal. I guess they can. Yes,
that's right. That could be even a decoy. Yeah,
it could be. Of a duck, you know. Yeah. I
mean, sometimes. Well, if you're worshipping it. Right. The duck is that, that's
a, that's a, I mean, from working with it, for example. I mean,
yeah, it would, yeah. Yeah, no, it's a great image.
I mean, they're, what James went to worship, see, that is the
point of how the, how the interpretation is decoying I agree with Amish. Is it a tool,
or is it something that's worshiped? Right. In some instances, the
decoy, if it's not a decoy, if it's suited, the purpose for
it is to worship it, then it's wrong. But there, see, that gets
to the point of the interpretation of even a photo. Some see the-
Yeah, even these pictures on the wall. Yes, pictures of some
sort. We don't want to worship these
pictures. I mean, we're not grieving. But
the point is, there's other principles that people say, no pictures. No this, no that. Oh, it's a
face. It's a mousetrap. But the pictures, even, see,
there's the Mennonites, The Amish, their children, their dolls. Do you know what their dolls
are missing? No? John, do you know what their
dolls are missing? It's missing a face. It just
has a blank head. Oh, OK. It has a blank head.
OK, no, whatever. It's possible. I don't worry. But the sad thing
about it is that they are You may argue with them in that interpretation,
but that's not the point. We can live with it. We can live
with a dog on their face. But the point is, what they miss
is the fact of understanding what grace is. They're putting
themselves in the ability of keeping the law is what's going to redeem them,
what's going to save them, in some instances. There are some
people. Now, there's different, I'm going to use the word order.
There's different orders, different plans, different sorts of Amish,
different sorts of Midnights, different sorts of Amish Midnights.
And so they're not necessarily all the same. So I'm trying to
come back, I mean, in a general state. And they like mottos. So if you see something on a
wall, it'll be either a Bible verse or something written that's
a thought as opposed to a picture. But there again, just because
someone has a picture on the wall doesn't mean they're worshiping
it. No, if that's an eye groove. Or a little knickknack, it doesn't
mean they're worshiping it. They're taking these principles
and they're saying, we can't do this. They're making a list
of what the law was supposed to
be. Exactly. To bring us to court, because
that's what the law was supposed to be. And not much with the
other denomination. They did the same thing. I mean, some of them, you know,
some of them are more, I mean, I'd rather be the guy, they're
falling short. They're not sensational. No,
I mean. Not to defend the Roman Catholic
Church, but I think you mentioned that at one time during the Middle
Ages, the people couldn't read, and so they had all these pictures,
or these, you know, like different idols that were all over, so
that, they could somehow gravitate to understand something. Yeah,
because even the priest spoke Latin. He preached in Latin,
so... You know, the average person,
once you go in the church door, when they read the Bible and
can't understand the priest. Correct. And this is back, if
you swim back, exactly. But that idea of going through,
that time period, Tim was talking about going to the dark ages. Yeah. What's that picture about?
Or they can say, well, this is the picture of the tabernacle.
Or this is the picture of the dead able. This is the picture
of who's able. This is the picture of, you know,
the ascension, this is a picture of whatever it might be, a painting,
not a picture, a painting. And so then they could tell,
they could at least talk about their view, the interpretation
of the dead able by Rubens. Or they could talk about the
picture of the ascension by whoever painted the ascension. They could
talk about whatever might be. And so even with the primitive
paintings, I can't even paint quite a pretty painting. Pretty
paintings don't have the same type of dimensions as the modern
paintings. I think I can do today's modern
art. But what I'm talking about, what
I'm talking about the paintings of the, looking at the paintings
of the 1300s, 12 and 1300s, they're different than the paintings
from the 1500s and 1600s. What, in my day, as far as, they
learned a lot, you know, in the developments of the paintings.
Who's John Smith here? I'm John, go ahead, your thoughts.
One of the problems that came out of that was because in the
middle ages, what would happen eventually is they would incorporate
into their doctrine the artist's ideas of what the scene looked
like. That's right. That's correct.
Right, exactly. That is true. And so we call
these icons. They're called icons. And so the very thing that's
being discussed here is they put too much value on these paintings,
these images, these statutes. But consequently, they almost
took the place. They did become idols. They did
become idols. Although perhaps that wasn't
the initial intention. There's a potentiality of things
being idols. There are things that we have.
today that could conceivably become an idol to somebody. They
may not be an idol to us, or they might be an idol to us.
Have you been to the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia? No, I don't believe I have. Where's
John? He makes statutes. The original
thinker is right out in front of us. The original thinker.
Is it like this? Yeah. It's right across the street
from the art museum. But as soon as you go up to the
building, it looks fairly small. And it is somewhat small on the
outside, surrounded by blue spruce trees. There's a big plaque at
the doorway. Before you go inside, you'll
see it is called the Gates of Hell. It's got an image of God,
angels, people on the earth, and then the devil below. It's
worth saying. Let's read a few more verses,
okay? Pick up verse nine, please. Thou
shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I the
Lord, thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children, and in the third and fourth generation
of them that hate me. And showing mercy unto thousands
of them that love thee, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name
of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him
guiltless, and taketh his name in vain. Keep the Sabbath day
sanctified, else, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labor, and
do all thy work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath
of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt not do any work
thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant,
nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of the cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates, that thy manservant and thy maidservant
may rest, as wall is down. Remember that the Lord thy God
brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched
out arm. Therefore the Lord thy God commanded
thee to keep the Sabbath set. Honor thy father and thy mother,
as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, that the days be prolonged,
and that they go well with thee in the reign which the Lord thy
God giveth thee. What does the Lord visit? We
see here he visits the iniquity. for the fathers, for the children,
and the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. So you
don't want to be inside of hating God, because it's going to hurt
your family, it's going to hurt your children, your grandchildren,
your great-grandchildren. Salvation isn't by works. In
other words, your parents or your grandparents or your great-grandparents
love God doesn't mean that if they don't look the opposite
way. But here in the book of Deuteronomy, it's talking about
the need to honor God. They can't help but go on and
have rambunctious images, and they clearly don't hate God.
Do what God expects you to do. Don't go the other way. I've
got a question for Tim. To whom does the Lord show mercy? Unto those who love the Lord
and keep His commandments. That's right. That's right? And so we have a contrast of
the groupings of people, the people groups that God hates,
those that worship idols, those that want to do the things of
the world, those that want to be like the neighbors. I'm not
talking about neighbors that are related here, but as far
as nation neighbors. We have countries that are this
way, that way, and all other ways. Normally, we don't have
countries to know for the South. But in a small area like Israel,
it's like states. Israel's like the state of New
Jersey, the size of it. And so we got Pennsylvania, we
got Delaware, we got New York. Then we go further to the North,
further to the West, further to the East. So that's what it's
like. With the disease. With the disease.
Mediterranean Sea. Exactly. And so the idea is you've
got to honor them. God's promised to honor them,
to take care of them, to love them, and do what he wants. Versus
those people who despise God, God's very long suffering. There was a limit. But that, having said that, he's
not completely going to cast away his people. And so in verse 11, what shall
not be taken in vain, and he will be guilty. So the idea that
maybe the Lord shall not be taken in vain, that's, God's not going
to hold him guiltless. God will hold him guiltless if
he takes the name of the Lord in vain. It's happening far too often. Again, we are not under the law,
but we're under grace. But there are people that are
totally clueless. Even though Jewish people They miss the fact that the Lord
Jesus Christ is on this side. And some of them, they're trying
to keep the law. It's because their rabbis keep
telling them, read the Torah. The rest of the Tanakh, most
of them don't read at all, which is sad. So they don't. where we are going through again
the repeated Ten Commandments. Nine of them are reiterated in
the New Testament. This one here, question 12, is
nine. John, question 12. 12. What day was he kept as a sanctified? The Sabbath day. The Sabbath
day. Now, this is a question to understand There's another question, a supplement
question. First of all, what day of the
week is a Sabbath? Amy? It's the seventh day. It's
the seventh day, day number seven. Which is Saturday on our calendar. On our calendar it says Saturday.
It mirrors the The days of creation. The Lord God rested on the seventh
day. He rested on the seventh day.
He worked six days. He worked on six days. So it
mirrors that. So we have work day one to six. God created. Rest day seven. In about two hours or so from
now, the Sabbath is going to begin in this part of this time
zone, right around six o'clock. And it will continue on until
tomorrow at six o'clock. Now, we've discussed this before
in the different services, but there is not, there's this station,
the church we believe we worship on the first day of the week. Somebody could argue, but the
other point of the fact is we should not call the first day
of the week the Sabbath. We're not under the law, we're
regressed. If somebody, if people are leaders, we have
to understand that it should not be called Sabbath. That's
what we have to understand. Because the conditions of the
Sabbath were not to work. That's right. And other things that are related
to it. We're not, under law, under grace. And to call it the
Sabbath, it's a mistake. I'm over it. Sometimes we understand people
that I like, they're the people I'd like to call son and son. But then what do you do with,
how do you compare? And he's saying to people, you
can't have the Sabbath in both times. You can't have the seventh
day of the week, or the first day of the week. And so when
the Scripture uses the word Sabbath, it has reference to the seventh
day of the week. And so, they were to keep the
Sabbath. Just like I committed them. I'm
going to leave where they work here, verse 13, for six days.
but the seventh day they were to rest. To mirror what God did
at creation. John, go ahead. I agree with you. It's incorrect to use the call
of Sunday the Sabbath. Christ is our Sabbath. He is
our rest. We don't have a Sabbath day.
We want to look at it that way, where Christ is our rest, as
every day of the week now. That's correct. Good point, John.
Let's go right along from what John said. I was thinking of
these verses in Hebrews chapter 4, verses 1 to 4. Let us therefore
fear lest a promise be left us of entering into his rest. Any of you should seem to come
short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached as well as
unto them. But the word preached did not
profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard
it. which believed do enter into
rest, as he said, as I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter
into my rest, although the works were finished from the foundation
of the world. For he spake in a certain place
of the seventh day on this wise, and God did rest on the seventh
day from all his works. And then in verse nine it says,
and there remained therefore a rest to the people of God. We can rest in Christ. All our labors and all our works
because of what He accomplished. That's right. We need to rest
in Christ. Go to verse 8 also on that. For if Jesus had given them rest,
then would He not afterward have spoken of another day? There
remained therefore a rest to the people of God. And Christ
is up in the dark path, and then Jesus. Take question 14, please. What
was not to be done on the seventh day? Any work. That's right. No work was supposed to be done
on the seventh day. That's an interesting point,
because so many Jews these days do work on Saturday, their supposed
Sabbath day. Yes. John's right. Wasn't just for
man, but if you read the verses, it outlines for any person or
any animal in the end. Yeah. Yes, that's correct. No
one's done by other. That's right. Let me notice here,
verse 15. In what land? where they were
in service, you see here, it's the, in the land region, it says. That's where they were serviced. The guy brought them out with
a stretched out and mighty hand. John, I'll read Bill, question
number 16. What might be prolonged their lives and well-being for
honoring thy father and thy mother? And what did the Lord give the
promised land? The promised land, that's right.
Let's read Deuteronomy 10, verse 17. Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt
thou commit adultery. Neither shalt thou bear false
witness against thy neighbor. Neither shalt thou desire thy
neighbor's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor's house,
his field, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or anything
that is thy neighbor's. The Lord spoke unto all the assembly
in the melt out of the midst of the fire of the crowd, and
of the thick darkness with a great voice, and he added, No more. And he wrote them in two tables
of stone, and delivered them unto me. And it came to pass,
when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, where
the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me, even
all the heads of your tribes and your elders. And ye said,
Behold, the Lord our God hath shown us his glory and his greatness,
and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. We
have seen this day the God that talketh with man, and he liveth. It was not acceptable. Of course,
this is the sixth killing. Thou shalt not kill. It's on
question number 18. What were they about to commit? Adultery. Were about to commit
adultery. Was stealing acceptable? No,
stealing was not acceptable. It says thou shalt not steal.
No looting. writing, burning down other people's
property. Let's bring them that stuff. OK, question 20. To whom were
they not to bear false witness? Well, they weren't to bear false
witness to anyone. Right. And they were not to speak
these things to about their neighbor, referring to anyone as well. Yes, that's right. That's right. Question 21, what are some things
that are not to be coveted? The wife of a neighbor, the neighbor's
field, the maid servant, the maid servant's locks, his ass.
Basically anything that harms your neighbor, you're not supposed
to covet. That means you have the aspect
of lust versus coveting. The idea of, well, they're not supposed to do this. These are the commandments. They're
being reiterated now. This is the second time. I'll
build question 22. Upon what were God's words written? He had lips of stone. Two tablets
of stone. The guy spoke, in the midst of
the fire, we see in verse 22, in the midst of the fire, out
of great darkness, And with a great voice, or there was fake darkness
rather, a fake darkness and a great voice. He wrote, the commandments
were written for your God in the table of stone. But they
burned with fire, we see in verse 23, the kingdom passed. When
you heard the voice on which the fire of darkness, the mountain
did burn with fire. Isn't that mountain, plural? Yeah, 23, yeah. It just says
for the mountain. It did burn with fire. Verse 23? Yeah. Do you want me
to find something to do? Is there an answer in the end
of the word mountain? No, not here. I must have been
seeing something. Maybe I need new glasses. Well, maybe some parallel versions. Well, I over-lined the S with
my answer, but I can see it's not here. No, it's not an NIV. I do have
two NIVs at home, but I haven't looked at them in years. Are
you sure you didn't pull one of those out when you were doing
it? No, they're buried under other
books. Question 24, John. What did the
Lord show them? His glory and greatness. That's
right. For who is there of all flesh
that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of
the midst of the fire as we have lived? Go down near and hear all that
the Lord our God shall say, and speak now unto us all that the
Lord our God shall speak unto thee. And we will hear it and
do it. And the Lord heard the voice of your
words, and he spake unto me. And the Lord said unto me, I
have heard the voice of the words of this people, which I have
spoken unto thee. And they have well said, all
that they have spoken. Let's read through verse 29,
Tammy. Oh, that there were such an heart in them, that they would
fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well
with them and with their children forever. Go say to them, get
you into your tents again. about us for these stand not
here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments,
and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them,
that it may do them in the land which I give them to possess
it. You shall obey to do them before
the Lord as your God commanded you. You shall not turn aside
to the right hand of the left. You shall walk in all the ways
which the Lord your God commanded you, and you may obey and that
it may be well with you, and that ye may have longer days
in the land which ye shall possess. And so going back here to verse 25, what did Israel
think would happen? They thought they were going to die
because of this great fire. When they're hearing the voice
of God, they're very afraid. They've never heard much respect
for what they were witnessing at that time. Tammy, question
26. Whose voice do they hear? The voice of the living God? They heard God's voice, the voice
of the living God. What were they to do? What was
going to happen? We see here in verse 27. They were supposed to hear, and
they were supposed to do. They weren't supposed to just
hear it, but they needed to do it. They needed to be hearers
and doers. So question 28, who heard the words of the children
of Israel? God, the God who ordered it to
be done. What words, what would be well
for the children of Israel to do? Fear Him. That's going to
be very well for them in a few minutes. What do you want? First,
the fear. The fear and the keep. Leave the Essies. That's right. And John? He's got his old duty
at hand. That's right. Good. I've got questions for you, John. To where were they to go? Tents. They were going to their tents.
That's right. What did Moses teach? He taught
them statutes and judgments. Again, this is to the generation
40 years, about 40 years after they came out of the land of
Egypt. Continue to question 32. So where
were they not to turn? They weren't to turn either to
the left or to the right. That's right, they kept on going
straight. They weren't to turn side. They kept on going straight. And where were they to walk?
always will be prolonged. They will walk their ways as
the Lord God has commanded me. What God says, you do that. And
if they do that, their days, their promises, their days will
be prolonged. Bill, question number 34. When
was it necessary for the commandments to be repeated? memory. If we observe ourselves,
we tend to forget things fairly quick. And even though they had
already been taught these things, they were forgetting. Yes, that's
right. They were. All right, John, we're
live today. All right, yes. Well, for one, they're hard-headed,
just as we are today. And the interpretation is that
we're learning. That's correct, it is. Anything
else you want to add there? Sure. This was a new generation. These were, if they were alive
at the time of the exodus, they were under 20 years old. And
so when they heard the command of God, they would have been,
well at that time they would have been under 20 years old.
So that would have been two years before the exodus. So they couldn't
have been older than 18 at the time of the exodus. And so, If
they heard it as children, they may not have gotten that it really
was pertaining to them, or the covenant wasn't with them. So now God is presenting it to
them so that they can know and understand it's to them. That's correct. That's right. That's right. They hadn't heard it yet. And
so, like you were saying, it's to them. Some of them weren't
even alive. Some of them were not alive.
That's the first one. John, this is the key verse from
Deuteronomy, chapter 5. For whom never hath a voice been
ahead, but one from David, whose body is on the earth? Yes, it's
good. How about you David? Hs verse 29, oh that there were
such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep my commandments
always, that it might be well with them and with their children
forever. I chose 32. There's a lot of verses that
could be chosen for this because they all cover pretty much the
same theme. You shall observe to do therefore
as the Lord your God hath commanded you. You shall not turn aside
to the right hand or to the left. Right. That's good. Keep straight on. OK, Bill, what's something else
you learned here? What other benefits? Remind me
that during your study you didn't already find. Well, one of the
benefits of studying this is it's a reminder of the shortness
of my own memory. OK. Thank you. Because you think about it for
a little while. We come to church, and we come
to Bible study. And we do this every week. And
it encourages us to read the Bible. It encourages us to think
about these things. Now, if we didn't have these
reminders, we would soon forget. And then these things would not
be so important. That's right. I'll be with you,
John. Question 36. I mentioned earlier
that repetition is the mother of learning. Yes, it is. And
that's what we do today. We need to keep repeating. We
only read those commandments just that one time in Exodus
chapter 20. I've never heard them repeated
throughout the scripture in any way, shape, or form. We look
like we forget. That's right. You're right. I'll
be with you. Question 36. Well, benefit. I was reminded of that it's a
privilege that we have God's words in our language and we
have a faithful and reliable translation that we're able to
have in our hands and in our hearts that can transform us
into His likeness. As opposed to the Old Testament,
we don't just have the law given to us, but we have the precious
promise of salvation and forgiveness of sins through the Lord Jesus
Christ. I wonder if we read 2 Corinthians
4. I mean chapter 4, rather. 2 Corinthians. where it kind of reminded me
of this passage, because Moses came off the mountain and he
had the glory, well that was in the previous chapter, chapter
3, the glory shone upon him, but then In verse 7 it says,
for we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency
of the power may be of God and not of us. And then in verse
18, while we look not at the things which are seen, but the
things which are not seen. For the things which are seen
are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
And so we can see in His glory daily because we have the word
God in our language, which many people don't have. So God bless her. I mean, Moses sat, I shouldn't
say sat, and he was up on the mount, and his face reflected
the glory of God, so much so that he had to put a veil over
it, because his face showed how much more when we spend time
with the Lord, we should have that sort of countenance. I mean,
not saying that we do always, but we should. And so that's
kind of where I was going with these verses. I'm not sure if
they were quite the ones I was, if those were the two that I
was looking for, or if it was something else. Right. There's
a benefit there. We have this benefit of the second giving. God has given
up on us. God hasn't given up on us either. Any more thoughts
anyone has about this section of chapter five? John, go ahead and close in prayer, please. Dear Gracious Heavenly Father,
we thank you so much for this study of your word. And dear
Rabbi, you have to provide word. I pray that as we've repeated
those Ten Commandments there, we remember and we need to constantly
be reminded of what your word says, Lord. We ask you to touch
each of our hearts, and bring you birth and back to our memories. You've also told us to hide your
word in our hearts so that we might not sin against you, Lord.
We want to do that. We want to honor our faith. Father,
we pray that you'd be with each of us as we are waiting for him
back together again this Sunday morning for the preaching from
your Word. That's all for today. In the
name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ,
amen.
