Sophia, your catechism question
this week is number 104 in the Children's. Of what use are the
Ten Commandments to us? And the answer is that they teach
us our duty and show our need of a Savior. Now what's very
interesting is that in this summary, it is very similar to what do
the Scriptures principally teach. The Scriptures principally teach
what man is to believe concerning God. and the Savior of which
the Ten Commandments teach us is God Himself. We need someone
who is as righteous as God and as glorious as God. Not only to be the Savior who
pays for our sins because we have sinned against God's glory
and who is our righteousness because we need someone who can
earn the heaven that has as its essence God's glory, but also
Once we have been justified, forgiven, made right with God,
we need to be made fit for glory, to be made fit for heaven. And how can our hearts and our
minds and our words and our behavior be brought into a state where
we would be as holy as Jesus is holy, and the answer is only
by Jesus. Now, the Ten Commandments, as
they describe for us what love of God looks like, what love
of neighbor looks like, and As each commandment implies everything
that is required even of our hearts, they show us that we
still need a Savior even after we've been forgiven. We need
the grace of God to carry us in all of our obedience so that
even after the fear of death and hell as Punishments is gone
because you have been forgiven in Jesus still as you As you
live your life trying to obey the 10 commandments from the
heart, you keep realizing, or you should keep realizing, this
is something daddy and mommy are still growing in, and everyone
that you know on this earth, even the most mature believers
are still growing in. We still, all day long, are discovering
our continual need for a Savior to work in us in accordance with
what He has won and earned for us. So that is what we are to
believe concerning God. And of course, the Ten Commandments
especially describe to us the duty that God requires of man. And it's a duty that doesn't
stop. Once you've been made righteous in the Lord Jesus and forgiven
in the Lord Jesus, your duty does not go away. God is still
our Creator, and now God is our Redeemer. And so now our duty
is doubled and more than doubled, for to have God as Redeemer is
even more than to have God as Creator. And so what a blessed
gift to us are the 10 Commandments that God has given us, summarizing
all of his commands in such a short form. The 10 Commandments teach
us our duty and show our need of a Savior. Of what use are
the 10 Commandments to us? They teach us our duty and show
our need of a Savior.
