Amen. Thank you, Brother Dave.
Brings back memories. All week has been overwhelming,
almost, in thinking of all the good memories that I had. go
any further, there's a few I need to recognize. First of all, I
want to thank God for having placed me in the ministry. There
is nothing better and I could not imagine doing anything else
than what I'm doing. I know for certain that I am
right where God wants me and doing exactly what God wants
me to do in the ministry. And I pray that whenever God
leads you out of here right now, be thrilled you're here. Enjoy
the time that you have. and work hard at it. And the faculty will do their
best to prepare you. And then guess what? Then you'll
get into the real world. But thank God for placing me
in the ministry. And secondly, I want to thank
my wife, Teresa. We'll be married 23 years this
year. I've hauled my wife all over the country, and she's always
been there. a man when you find a helpmate and you find one that
loves you and that supports you, you can do pretty much anything.
having faith in God and having a good wife, nothing better than
that. Teresa, thank you. My children
are at home today with brother Gary Norris, and they're also
watching on the computer this morning. I want to say hello
to brother Gary Norris. Thank you, brother, for watching
over my family while I'm gone. Tyler, Tane, and Kareth, love
you guys, and I look forward to seeing you when I get back.
And thank you, Dr. Comfort, for allowing me Dr. Beal, thank you for allowing
me to come back. I think the only happy time, the happier
time that Dr. Comfort will have than when he
saw me leave in 1996 will be when I leave this week. I told him some stories yesterday
and I think he's horrified about what went on in that old campus
back there. I thought after 16 years I could
finally get it off my chest, all those things that we did.
But really, truly enjoyed that. I'd like you to take your Bibles
to 2 Timothy. 2 Timothy chapter 1. I did not talk to Brother Dave
Smith, didn't know he was singing today, and then he shows up in
that last song that he sang, having faith in God and being
discouraged. The title of the message today
is, How to Overcome the Perils of Discouragement. And I pray
that this will be a help. I've been praying for a number
of months after Brother Beale had called and asked me to come
and asking the Lord to lay on my heart that which would truly
be a help to each one of you and to anyone who may be listening
to this or sometime may even pull this out of the archives.
I pray that that of all things, you don't have to remember who
I am. I don't care anything about that, but I do pray that As we
look at this passage here in 2 Timothy chapter 1, that these
verses will come back to you. And as David said in the Psalms,
there is a place where the enemies had put him and he had gone and
said that he was in a dark place. And first of all, I guess I should
preface all of this by saying that there is nothing that I
would rather do than be in the ministry. There are some wonderful
things that go on in your life in the ministry. There is nothing
better than when you're sitting there at a pew and you lead someone
to Christ and see their entire life change for eternity. There's
nothing better than whenever you see a family that you've
been counseling, and talking to, and preaching to, and praying
with, and you see their family restored, and you see their children
come back to the Lord, and you see the blessings that God gives
you as being a pastor. So don't think that it's all
bad, alright? But there are many times that
whenever we become discouraged, and we go into that dark place
that even David was talking about in the Psalms, and we get into
that place where spiritually we're in a dark place, physically
we're in this dark place, thinking as Brother Rob said yesterday,
all alone, I want you to know that it's at that time when God
is ready to do a major work in your life. And so in the thing
that we need to understand, whenever we get into those places in our
life, and you will and you're thinking, I remember when I was
a dorm supervisor, I had a married student come to me and he said,
Brother, he said, Yeah, all these professors are telling us that
You know what? This is a great time in your
life and we need to enjoy this and really understand the blessings
we have. And it's going to get a lot harder
in our lives as we go. He said, I'm a married student.
I have kids and I'm struggling. And there's a lot of stress. And yes, there is. But it can
get worse. And we need to understand that.
And I understand that now more so. And whenever you get into
the world and you start dealing with people, and you start dealing
with those that have been oppressed by Satan, by the world, and have
all of those things that are going on, the burden of sin that's
on their life, and you start dealing with all of that that's
going on in their lives, and you as a pastor or in the ministry
are taking that upon yourself and praying for them, things
get heavy. Things get dark. But don't be
discouraged. Don't get into that dark place
and continue to focus on that. But remember what God wants you
to remember in His precious Word. In 2 Timothy chapter 1, we're
going to see three things. Three things that we can use
to overcome. the perils of discouragement.
And in verses 1 through 5, we see first of all, the first thing
we should do is remember our salvation. It tells us in verse
1, Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according
to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus. You go through
and you start reading the books that Paul had written, and oh,
so often he introduces himself, gives us who he is, this apostle,
and always giving credit to God. God is the one who has placed
him in the ministry. God is the one that places you
in the ministry. Believe me, there have been times
in Fort Morgan, Colorado, being there 15 years, that there has
been times when I've sat down and I thought, God, are you sure
this is where you wanted me? There have been times where,
and I'm ashamed to say this today, but there have been times where
I've sat there with my family and I've watched my children
weeping because of families that have left or because of the hurt.
And believe me, it's one thing to mess with you. But it's another
thing when it's your family. And you start seeing the heartbreak
of your wife, and you see your children going through the struggles,
and you all need to remember, when you're in that ministry,
it's your whole family that's in that ministry. It's everybody
in your whole family. And you start seeing those things,
and you sit down and you're in that dark place, and you're thinking,
God, is this truly what you want me to do? And then you go back. And I go back to that summer
night in Trenton, Missouri. And that evening of special meetings. And God brings that back to me.
And I remember coming forward and getting down at that altar.
And I remember as sure as my salvation, my calling into the
ministry. And I start remembering how in
Spickard, Missouri, when I was a young child, coming up to Brother
Norris Ramsey, my pastor at the time, and telling him that I
need to trust Christ as my Savior. And I remember those things in
my life. And so I start looking at that,
and God starts bringing those memories back to me. And He starts
showing me, first of all, you're my child. Never forget that. Have faith in God. Know and understand
that He has control of things. And know it is He that places
you in that ministry. And then he goes on and he says,
he says, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus. Isn't it great to know in Acts
chapter 4 and verse 12, neither is there salvation in any other,
for there is none other name under heaven given among men
whereby we must be saved. Isn't it great to know that we
are representing the God of gods, King of kings, and Lord of lords?
Jesus Christ our Savior. What a blessed ministry that
is. And how could there be anything better in our lives than representing
our Lord? And so, he tells us according
to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus. To Timothy,
my dearly beloved son, grace, mercy, and peace. From God the
Father in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Whenever we see this verse, and
he's writing this to Timothy, here is Paul's last letter that
he writes before he's killed. Have you ever given thought to
that? Maybe it's a morbid thing to think, but I wonder what I
would do if God gave me the time where I knew that I was soon
to die. What would I do with the last minutes of my life? Or what would I do with the last
days or the last months of my life? Here Paul knew that he
was soon to die. And we don't see that, you know,
Facebook is good for some things, but I saw a lady on there one
time and I believe it was a carnal statement to make that you just
need to live like you're dying and go out and jump out of an
airplane or ride a bull, you know, and she's quoting all these
things and I'm thinking, you know what? Those things aren't
going to be what you're truly going to be thinking about if
you're walking with God. And here Paul shows us his whole
thoughts were, Timothy, I want you to be strong. I want you
to be encouraged. I want you to keep serving God.
I want you to continue to tell people the Gospel and serving
that living God until the last day that you have breath. Those
are the things that count for eternity. You know, I did actually
get to ride a bull. It's great living in the West. I actually rode a bull, not for
very long. You know? I wrote him for eight
seconds and then they opened the chute gate. You know? You know, the only thing I can
remember about that is how sore my knee was when I hit the chute
on the way out. And now, I've had knee surgery
since then. Thank you. And so, you know,
I think of those things. I think about the terrifying
experience it would be to jump out of an airplane. And I think
about how foolish people are to think that that's exhilarating
and fun. But you know the things that truly bless my heart is
I remember I walked into a lady's apartment. We had been bringing
her children to church. And Holly, if you're listening,
I hope you see this. I walked into this young lady's
house. She had just come back from her funeral and she had
lots of questions. And I'd been praying about when
to come and sit down and talk to her. And that day, on a Saturday
afternoon, I led Holly to the Lord. And I think about how blessed
that was in my life. I think about all those people
in our church that I've seen God do wonderful, marvelous works
in their lives. And here I see that he gives
us. And when he writes this to Timothy,
my dearly beloved son, we think of that close kinship that they
had. But then he says, grace, mercy
and peace. You know all three of those things he is directing
to Timothy, who is a saved individual? This is the kind of grace that
sustains us every day. It's that kind of grace that
you see whenever you go in and you sit down and you lead someone
to the Lord and you think, praise the Lord. That sustains us. Those
are the things that help us to get through the times in our
life where we're in that dark place. Mercy. Oh, every day. Every day I wake
up. And I look in the mirror. And
I think about how merciful my God is to me. I think about Him
placing me in the ministry. Dr. Comfort is wondering about
that after those stories I told him yesterday. But I thank God
for the mercy that He shows me every day. I see it in my life. I see it in the lives of my congregation. And I praise Him for that mercy. And then the peace. That peace
that He talks about that passeth all understanding. That peace
that only comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit living in
my heart. That peace, even when I see my children weeping, and
when I see my wife who was distraught, He lays a sudden peace on my
life that I know that I'm doing what He has called me to do. Oh, be certain. Be certain of
your salvation. Be certain of your calling into
the ministry from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. But
then He goes on. And we see verse 2 and 3, we
see Paul's prayer for Timothy. Verse 3, he says, I thank God
whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience. You know,
there's been, and every one of you, those of you who are in
the ministry, you already understand that. But every one of you will
be tested in your life and in your ministry. Just get used
to it. It's going to come. And as I
see this, and as I read this, and as God has used this to minister
to me, it shows me that who do I serve? I don't serve those
people. I serve God. And in serving God,
I serve people. But on all of that, I am serving
God. While you are in school right
now, who is it that you serve? You serve God. And in serving
God, you serve people. Your entire life, you will be
a servant to our Lord Jesus Christ. That's who we need to be serving.
Whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience. You know,
I think about those times that it's truly been dark. And I don't
have an assistant other than my wife. And praise the Lord,
she's the best secretary you'll ever have, guys, is have your
wife. And I thank God for that. But as I look at this passage
and I think about whom I serve with my forefathers with pure
conscience, I don't have any assistance or anything and so
I teach Sunday school, I teach Sunday morning, I teach Sunday
night, I teach Wednesday night, I do funerals, I do weddings,
I do everything else in between. You guys understand that? And
I remember whenever there were some hard times in my life and
some times of discouragement where I was in that peril of
discouragement of getting into that rut and staying there and
I knew that I still needed to serve God with a pure conscience
and so I had to study. And every day I study. And every day your mind is wandering
every direction. And you're thinking about all
these pressures that's going on in your life. And you're fighting
the bitterness. And you're fighting the carnality.
You're fighting the attitudes. You're fighting the idea of these
other people who are against you. You're fighting this thing
that you think that you're all alone. But every day you stay
in the Word. And I remember in my office,
how God tenderly, in His mercy, ministered to my life. And how
He took His precious Word, and He continued to show me, don't
worry about the people. You serve Me. People are fickle,
but God is faithful. And He will always be faithful.
In all areas. And so who do you serve? You
serve God Almighty. You serve the God of Elijah.
You serve the God of Paul. You serve your God, your Father,
through Jesus Christ. And he goes on, that without
ceasing, I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and
day. You know, I think about the friendship
that Paul had with Timothy. That man that stood up here yesterday
and preached, Brother Rob Thornton. I know he's on the plane, so
he can't see this, so I can say the nice things while he's gone.
He might get a swelled head if he knew these things. But a good
friend in the ministry. And I pray for that man. Knowing
the struggles that he goes through, he prays for me. I think of Brother
Gary Norris, who's back in Colorado right now, watching my kids.
Thank you, Brother Gary. What a blessing he's been. I
think of Pastor Cam, who I call on occasions and talk to, and
what a good friend he's been. I think of Dr. Curallo in Fort
Walton Beach, Florida, and how many times I've called for godly
advice. And he continued to tell me,
Shannon, you just need to stay where you're at. Stay there. I remember a statement that was
said by one of the faculty years ago. If you're not going to stay
in the Word, and you're not going to study the Word, and you're
not going to have the character to stick it out, don't rent a
U-Haul. Buy it. It'll be cheaper. I don't want to buy a U-Haul.
And so I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and
day. You will find that the friends that you have will be the ones
that you make right here. I think of all those men, Brother
Rahm, Dr. Q, Pastor Camp, Brother Gary
Norris, all four of those men I met right here at Ambassador.
And I thank God for their friendship. I thank God that I can call those
men at any time I think of Brother Chuck Donnelly, evangelist with
Rock of Ages Prison Ministry in Washington State, who called
me at one time and he said, Brother, if you need me to be there, I'll
leave tonight and come and be there for you. That means a lot,
doesn't it? And God allows those people to
be in your life. to encourage you and to remind
you of what you have in the salvation that He gives us. He says, greatly
desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled
with joy. whether those tears were in their
parting, whether those tears were... I think of what Timothy
has gone through. Can you imagine, you go back
and you read 1 Timothy, here is a young man, and Paul gives
him all this instruction. He says, Timothy, I want you
to go in there. I want you to set those guys right. I want
you to preach and teach the Word. And here in 2 Timothy, he continues
to exhort him, preach the Word, be instant in season, out of
season. And here he continues to tell
it, and you start thinking about the tears, and you start thinking
about the tears that Timothy shed, not only for his friend
Paul, but for those in his congregation, those that he was dealing with
and ministering with, and there will be tears in your ministry.
There will be heartache in your ministry. There will be those
who come in, and I've seen grown men coming in, weeping over the
burden of sin in their life. And here you are sitting there.
You are just a human being like everybody else. You have feet
of clay. You have a mind that's weak.
You have a body that's weak. And here they come in and they
want you to give them answers to their problems. You try to
do that on your own and you will fail. And you weep with them
because you truly do see the tears and the grief and the burden. But then you give them that one
thing that is always faithful. This right here. You can give
them all the advice in the world and they'll walk out of there
and have accomplished nothing by seeing you. but you give them
this precious word, and just as it will minister to you in
those quiet times of study, in that quiet time of meditation,
God can take that and use that and do a major work in their
lives. It all starts with our salvation. Oh, how good He is
to save us. When I call to remembrance the
unfeigned faith that is in thee. You know what I found? First
of all, I found I'm not going to have near enough time to finish
all three of my points. So you're going to have to invite
me back sometime. But you know what I found being in a church
for 15 years? I need to be transparent. Those
people in my congregation, they do know that I have feet of clay. I let them know that all the
time. I ask them to pray for me. And if they think I'm perfect,
I tell them all you need to do is come and go with me for about
an hour. You'll see all kinds of things you need to pray for. But I found that in an unfeigned
faith, one that is genuine, one that is sincere, open and transparent,
people see that. And people will come to that.
And you can witness to them. And you can share testimonies
with them. And you can encourage the brothers. You can evangelize the lost by
a genuine faith. which dwelt first in thy grandmother
Lois, thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also."
Another message for later is how important the family is in
being that testimony, is it not? Praise the Lord for those godly
women that were in Timothy's life. Wherefore? I guess we'll hit the second
point. I'll go quick. First of all, remember your salvation.
Secondly, we see, starting with verse 6 and verse 7, rekindle
your calling. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance.
What is it that Paul has reminded Timothy of? Timothy, remember
your faith. Who's it in? It's in Jesus Christ. You have eternal life. You have
trusted that glorious Gospel of Christ, and you have that
wonderful salvation. And so, wherefore, I put thee
in remembrance, and I want to remind you, that thou stir up
the gift of God which is in thee, by the putting on of my hands.
You can go back into 1 Timothy. Not quite sure what... there's
speculation. I'm not going to speculate. I
don't have time for that. Don't know what the gift was
exactly that Timothy had. But obviously, whatever it was,
God had equipped him to do what God wanted him to do. And God
has equipped me to do exactly what He wants to accomplish in
my life. He has equipped you with exactly
what you need to accomplish what it is that He wants to accomplish
in your life. He will equip you, He will give
you the gifts that you need, and you need to just continue
to grow and be conformed into that image of Christ. And in
doing so, remembering those things, that thou stir up the gift of
God. Go in and remember how good it
was when you get out. I can't believe it's been 15
years since I was here. 16 years since we left the school. And I think about all those questions
that I had at the time, and wondering what it was that God would have
me to do. and all that excitement that I had and sometimes you
get out into the world and you're dealing with all of the pressures
and dealing with the congregation and all the pressures of the
ministry and sometimes you soon forget and then you read something
like this and he tells us that we need to rekindle that calling. We need to stir up the gift of
God. Every once in a while, I have
a friend that I call him the paint stick because he's always
stirring things up. And you know, there are times
where we need to stir things up in our own lives. We do need
to remember those things and stir up the gift of God, and
know that that is what God has gifted you with, and go out there
and do what it is that He's called you to do. There are going to
be people that come to you. I remember one time, a guy told
me, he said, Pastor, I feel that the Holy Spirit is leading you
to leave. And then his wife, she said,
well, what would you do if the Holy Spirit was leading you to
leave? I would leave! But you're not the Holy Spirit! But you deal with a meeting like
that, and then you go home, and what's your heart start doing?
What's your mind start doing? You start wondering, am I truly
cut out for this? And I go back to that evening.
In Trenton, Missouri, Pastor Dwayne Davis preaching.
And I came forward and I'll never forget God calling me into the
ministry. I serve God and in serving God,
I serve people. We need to remember that. and
you stir up that calling. I tell people, you need to be
as certain of your calling into the ministry as you are that
effectual calling of salvation in your life. And then I love this next verse.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear. Dr. Childs, you'll probably shoot
me after I say this, but I remember in classes, he said, you know
what? You guys are going to be out there, and you're going to
find out that you might have a bell cow in your congregation. Does anyone know what a bell
cow is? And you're going to think, how
in the world could that person who's 5'5", 110 pounds be intimidating? Yeah? But they can't be. I think of how many times I've
had the worst thing in the world for a pastor, you get a phone
call. Pastor, we need to meet. And, you know, I'm 6'8", some
many pounds, and I think, you know, there
shouldn't be anything that you're afraid of. But then you get a
phone call. Oh, and you're mine. And you're
mine. And then you start questioning
yourself. And you start wondering, Lord, am I cut out for this? And then you go and you sit down
in that meeting, And they say, you know, Pastor, we just feel
like God's leading us here to join the church. What wasn't that good? And here
you are, all that stress. And then here you come to this
verse. And it says, For God hath not
given us the spirit of fear. Whenever we're walking with the
Lord as we should, and we're doing the things that we ought
to be doing, There is absolutely no reason to fear anything that's
going on, standing on the promises of His precious Word. And then
not only does He say that, but then He says the spirit of fear,
but also He hasn't given us the spirit of power. He has given
us the spirit of power, but of power and of love and of a sound
mind. You know, not too long ago in
my devotions, I was reading, still actually, read this sometime
back, still in the story right now, my devotions on Samson.
when Samson, remember when they bound him and they didn't bind
him, he found out they came into the city to take him and it says
that he busted out and he grabbed the gates of the city. You remember
that? It says that he picked up the
gates of the city. I studied that out. He carried
the gates of the city 38 miles and carried it 3,300 feet above
sea level. I think about the power that
that man had, and I think about the power, the Spirit of God
that was on a carnal man at best. What could he do with someone
who is a child of God, who is walking with God, who is on his
knees praying for the power of God to be on his life? How much
could be accomplished with someone who is truly doing the will of
God in their lives? And he tells us that he has given
us that spirit in our lives! And we go in and we start questioning
ourselves and we start questioning our calling. Some of us sometimes
may even doubt whether we're truly saved with some of the
thoughts we have about that bell cow. And then we have all these
doubts coming in our mind. And then you come to a verse
like this in your daily study. In your daily study. In your
daily study of God's Word. And He shows us, you don't have
anything to fear. And as a matter of fact, that
power, that minimal power that I showed in Samson's life, is
just but a little piece of the iceberg of the power that God
wants to perform in your life. That's what we need to be doing
in our lives. Living by the power of God. Living
by the controlling Spirit in our lives today. There is nothing
to fear. And it's all power of God. And
then whenever you're living under the power of the Spirit, you
also have the love that you need. I think of some of the meetings
that I've had through the years. And you will have meetings. And
you will have phone calls. And you will have those who say
things, you know something else, this is all free. People start
trashing you. People start saying things that
aren't true. You know who can defend yourself
better than you? God. You just keep doing what
you need to do. You know, you need to picture
it as a freight train. You're on God's train, and you're
busy serving God. And if they want to jump off
and they want to say things, look out. Because that light
at the end of the tunnel for them is the freight train. And
God does it. I don't have to do anything.
I just keep serving Him. And I pray for those people. Because you love them. You don't
go into a church and stay there 15 years and not learn to love
those people who are there. I think as so many of our families
in our church today, what a support they are. One gentleman came
up to me Wednesday night after the service, walked up to me,
and as this one gal gave the testimony yesterday of getting
a green handshake, you know, he came out and shook my hand.
He gave me a $100 bill. He said, Pastor, I just want
you to go out there and take your family out to eat, Ken and
Tammy and Teresa. He said, just go have a good
time. That's from me. And I think of just little things
like that. I think of Mrs. Boatman, who
said, Pastor, I'll be praying for you 7 o'clock Tuesday morning,
which is 9 o'clock here. She said, I'll pray for you.
I think of all those other in the church who have been praying
for me. The texts that I've received, the phone calls, the love that
they show me. Why do they love me? Because
they also know that I love them. And I do. And I love those people
in that church. And it's only because God gives
us that kind of love. A self-sacrificial love that
we ought to have. But then what does he also say?
He gives us a sound mind. He gives us something that is
healthy to think about. Your calling into the ministry. The glorious God that we serve.
The one who is faithful. He gave me salvation. He called
me into the ministry. And so I rekindle it. And I'm
encouraged. And I pray that as you go into
the ministry, and you get into that dark place in your life,
and you feel like you're all alone, you come back to these
verses, and you remember your salvation. You rekindle your
calling. And the last thing in verse 8,
in just a couple of minutes, and I'll be done, you rejoice
in the Gospel. Be not thou therefore ashamed
of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner. That's
the first command. There's two commands in this
verse. That's the first one. The negative command. Be not
thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord. I think
of what Paul wrote in Romans 1 in verse 16. For I am not ashamed
of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation
to everyone that believeth, to the Jew first, and also to the
Greek. We should never be ashamed of
that Gospel of Jesus Christ. Preaching it and teaching it
and living by it and continue to rejoice in the Gospel and
that glorious privilege we have of teaching it to everybody.
I told Dr. Comfort and Brother Beal last
night, I enjoyed all four years. God knew that I was a wimp. He
didn't put me through a whole lot of trials while I was here.
He made it all good. We came that first year and was
working off campus, my wife and I, and I tried to be here for
everything. I mean, I wanted to be here.
I wanted every part of this. I wanted to enjoy what I had.
I thought, man, I only have a year. I'm going to get all I can. About
week number two, I thought, you know what? Probably be good if
I stayed two. By mid-semester, I'm thinking,
this isn't going to work. I told God when I walked out
of the state university, Lord, I am never going to go back to
school again. And by that first semester, I'm
thinking, OK, I don't think I'm going to say never again. And
then Dr. Comfort came to me. He said,
Brother Monday, I'm sure you'd rethink that now. Brother Monday,
he said, we would like you to pray about taking a position
as a dorm supervisor. Oh, OK. What does that entail?
Well, we'd like your wife also to be the lady's dorm supervisor. And we want you to come. We'll
give you a place to live here on campus. We'll let you go to
school. And all your tuition will be
taken care of. And we'll even let you eat. all
your meals here. He said, I'd like you to pray
about it. OK, I'll take it. But what a joy. And for four
years, all I did was study this wonderful word. And now, I get
into the ministry, and not only am I studying the Word, but the
church is paying me to do it! How much better can it get? I
mean, I think of all the blessings, and so I start rejoicing in the
Gospel and thinking, here I am, I get to study this every day,
I get to share it with those around, and then somebody comes
along, and I start witnessing to them, and I see that person
turn their lives over to Christ, and it makes you want to have
a Pentecostal fit! Makes you want to walk on water
like Dr. Childs used to. Do you still do that? Giving up those childish things,
right? But it's thrilling. There is
nothing better than rejoicing in the Gospel. And then he says,
the next command, but for those of you who are in Greek, That's
strong adversative. But, be thou partaker of the
afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God. I want you
to know that I am not bitter from any of those meetings that
I've had through the years. I thank God that He's allowed
me to be in the ministry. And that scar that you have on
your heart, that cut that you have in your soul, From those
who have hurt you, that's just the war wound. Those are the
things that you can look back at later and say, thank you,
Lord. Thank you, Lord, for allowing
me to be a partaker, to share in the afflictions of the gospel.
There is nothing better than being a preacher of the gospel
of Jesus Christ. Whether you're a pastor, whether
you're an evangelist, whether you're a missionary, whether
you're a lay person that just goes out and gives the gospel,
there is nothing better than being a preacher of the gospel. So rejoice in it. Rejoice, rejoice,
rejoice. Remember your salvation. Rekindle
your calling. and rejoice in the gospel. Let's pray. Father, I thank you
for your word today. God, so often we're just so inadequate
in sharing this perfect word. But Lord, I know that the Holy
Spirit isn't. And I pray that you will do a
work in the lives of each one who hears this. Lord, I pray
that you will encourage them in a special way. to show them
how to overcome that peril of discouragement. Lord, I ask you
continue to guide and bless, help these guys to remember,
these students to remember what it is that they've studied, do
well on their finals, but especially do well in life in serving you. We thank you and we love you.
We pray your blessings in Jesus' name. Amen.
