Christ's Power to Provide
The feeding of the 5000 is one of the most famous miracles in scripture. It displays Christ's sufficiency and His ability to provide for all our needs.
As the disciples need a break, they travel to a deserted place, but the crowds quickly follow. Jesus views them as 'sheep not having a shepherd' and begins to 'teach them many things'. He then performs this amazing miracle, designed not just as an act of kindness, but also to teach the multitude. Provided with just 5 loaves and 2 fish, Christ feeds 5000 men, besides women and children.
When we come to see our own sinfulness, we will view this world as a 'desert place'. There is no human way of meeting our deepest need, but Christ demonstrates His sufficiency by inviting everybody, and providing for all who come. Christ's supply is inexhaustible - have we partaken of the Bread of Life?
