Exodus 17.6 says, Behold, I will
stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb, and thou shalt
smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the
people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight
of the elders of Israel. We discussed Jesus being pictured
in this rock that was smitten as a type and shadow. And we
touched on the matter that the waters from this rock bring life
and refreshment to the Hebrews. And that picture is the living
water that Jesus promised to us as believers. 1 Corinthians
10, four says it crystal clear. And did all drink the same spiritual
drink for they drank of that spiritual rock, capital R, that
followed them. And that rock, capital R again,
was Christ. The water represents Christ,
or the water, the rock represents Christ, the water comes from
Christ. And Jesus describes this reality
when speaking to the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, and we
read in John 4, 9 through 14, then saith the woman of Samaria
unto him, how is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of
me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings
with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto
her, if thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith
to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and
he would have given thee living water. Verse 11, the woman saith
unto him, sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is
deep. From whence then hast thou that living water? Verse 12,
she says, Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave
us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and
his cattle? The answer would be yes. Verse
13, Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this
water shall thirst again, pointing at the well. Verse 14, but whosoever
drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst,
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of
water springing up into everlasting life. The Hebrews drank of that
water that came out of the rock in Horeb, and we can assume they
filled up their canteens and water barrels because in that
desert heat it would be no time before they'd get thirsty again,
and that's a physical reality of this material world. When
a sinner comes to a saving knowledge in Jesus Christ and is forgiven
of his or her sins, we receive the Holy Spirit. And now we have
the written word of God at our disposal and we can face anything
in this physical world knowing that we have eternal life. And
we can offer that same spiritual drink to any and all lost sinners
we interact with. Our thirst for forgiveness of
sins and eternal life is quenched forever. And our spiritual thirst
in this life is permanently quenched unless In a practical sense,
we backslide and stop drinking from his fountain. We don't lose
our salvation, but we can get spiritually thirsty until we
confess our sins with the promise of 1 John 1, 9. If we confess
our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I love how Jesus taught this
in John 7, 37 to 40. In the last day, That great day of the feast,
Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come
unto me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the
scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living
water. But this spake he of the Spirit. which they that believe on him
should receive. For the Holy Ghost was not yet
given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified. And verse
40 says, many of the people, therefore, when they heard this
saying, said, of a truth, this is the prophet. Capital P, just
like in Deuteronomy 18, predicting the Messiah. And the Bible actually
ends with this same promise of the water of life in Revelation
21 6, and he said unto me, it is done. I am Alpha and Omega,
the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is
a thirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. And again
in Revelation 22 17, and the spirit and the bride say come.
and let him that heareth say come, and let him that is athirst
come, and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."
But don't just take it, share it. Tell others about Jesus as
Jesus said in Matthew 10, 8, freely give, receive, freely
give.
