Jesus and Human Flourishing
The Bible tells us that the world as we presently know it “will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed” (2 Peter 3:10–13, ESV). This destruction will bring a final an end to the “the rulers of this age” who rule according to worldly wisdom, they “are doomed to pass away.” (1 Corinthians 2:6). Consequently God will bring an end to corrupt government and usher in a new kind of government wherein Christ is King. Christ will fulfill once for all the mandate originally given to Adam to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion” (Gen 1:28). The mandate was given to Noah also (Genesis 9:1-2) and finally God promised that the one to ultimately fulfill the command would be the offspring of Abraham (Genesis 17:6–7; see Galatians 3:16–17). Jesus’ Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20), has this goal in view namely the flourishing of a new humanity in Christ.
