Proverbs 22.6 says, train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Before getting into our proverb, I want to note that this is the 730th proverb devotional. That means that at this point, you could listen to a proverb devotional seven days a week for two years without repeating. That doesn't count all of the about Jesus, evidence for God, and holiday devotionals we've done. We know some who listen to the new upload in the morning and then listen to an oldie at lunch or in the evening around dinner time. At least one listener tells us that she listens to the old devotionals right before bedtime in addition to the new one in the morning. And we provide these devotionals as a way of helping Christians train themselves to start their day and to fill their day with God's word and with God in our thoughts all the day long. In the previous proverb devotional, we emphasized the need for Christian parents to train up a child in the way he should go. in these last days when most Christian parents do very little of anything that could be called training. But we must take note of the fact that it's not just about training a child, but with double emphasis on in the way he should go. According to a Pew Research study published in February 2025, only about 3% of U.S. students were being homeschooled as of the 2022-23 school year. About 2% are enrolled in private schools, so that's at or below 5% of American children, that are not being schooled in the government school system. That means that around 95% of students are being educated for several hours a day, 180 or so days a year in the government-controlled schools. In those schools, biblical morality is undermined with a non-biblical relativistic morality. In only the best of government schools is there some semblance of neutrality on these issues. In most cases, it's an atheist setup. Kids are not taught to have sex after marriage. Abortion is not denounced as murder. Homosexuality is accommodated, and most schools tell children it's okay to be gay. The science department undermines God as creator and censors all evidence for the biblical creation account and the global flood of Noah and so forth. The music departments are decidedly secular, the overall school culture is secular, and much of the behavior is wicked, and the daily typical conversation and language is profane. You say, well, that's the real world. No, it's not. The things happening in the schools would never be tolerated in the workplace. It's like hell minus the flames in many cases. The Bible doesn't say hand your children over for all-day training in a godless atmosphere. It says train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Now, not everybody can homeschool, and certainly not everybody can afford private school. If you're in a personal situation where you simply can't do anything else, you just have to be sure to detox your children on a daily basis by going over their schoolwork, applying Acts 17.11 to the curriculum, and then spending time in daily Bible reading, Bible memorization, biblical discussions, and prayer with your children on a daily basis. Only then are you actually obeying God's word, and only then can you be assured of the promise that when the child is old, he will not depart from his or her training. And we'll discuss what that means next time. But in the meantime, may each of us teach our children, and personally, each of us should be following Paul's admonition in 2 Corinthians 10.5, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. That includes your children while they're in school. And of course, you should be setting the example in your own life every single day for His glory and obedience to His word.
730 In The Way He Should Go (Proverbs 22:6) Our Daily Greg
We must obey the commandment to train up a child, but the emphasis is on training him "in the way he should go". Handing a child over the government while not carefully scrutinizing and critically examining the curriculum and activities in tight of God's word is a FAILURE to follow this wisdom in God's word.
