The Bible says, Every wise woman
buildeth her house, but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Christian Homemaker, for the next five minutes, let Bennet
Peters-Jones share with you some spiritual helps for building
rather than battering your home. Here now is Sunshine on the Soaked
Suds. Travel by airplane provides me
with a rare opportunity for casual reading. While on a trip with
my husband last week, I picked up the airline magazine and scanned
an article about yo-yos. By the end of the piece, I had
to shake my head in wonder. That article had outlined a man's
life given to building a better yo-yo. Building a better yo-yo. The article pointed out that
the interest this man had in yo-yos began, obviously, in childhood. But when he grew up, he didn't
lose his interest in yo-yos. That interest continued well
into his adulthood. In fact, it spurred him to a single-minded
search. He wanted to build a better yo-yo. First of all, he searched far
and wide for the best materials out of which to make a yo-yo.
And after several different materials had been tried, he finally settled
on the good old faithful wood. But then he explored the physics
of yo-yos. Did you know that yo-yos had
physics? Well, he had to look into that so that he could find
the ideal diameter for a yo-yo axle. He came up with the answer
that it had to be 250 one-thousandths of an inch in diameter with a
groove in the center. Beyond that, he also looked for
an ideal shape for the yo-yo. You see, he wanted a toy that
would perform several different kinds of tricks. After much hard
searching, he again came up with an answer. A take apart, put
back together again type for the different conformations.
And still he went looking, this time for the best axle material.
Here, he wanted to find something that would work for the sake
of reduced friction as the yo-yo spins. He found in his research
that brass was too heavy. Aluminum and steel didn't work
as well as wood. And still frustrated, this searcher
applied to NASA for help. And sure enough, those astute
scientists worked with this man to find new space-age materials,
sending him about 100 prototypes. At the end of his search, he
went back to wood. All of this in pursuit of a yo-yo. What unbelievable intensity and
longevity of focus. What surprising tenacity and
what a long-ranging search. For what? A yo-yo. A toy. But lest we too quickly
dismiss this man as a misguided child, we should recognize that
we too might be lured into yo-yo pursuit. Think about it. Look around you. Don't you know
some folks who might qualify as Christian yo-yo researchers? These are the folks who have
an intense single-sided concentration on such things as their own personal
interests within the Christian community, or their pet doctrines,
their closely held ideas and ideals, their stubbornly guarded
practices, or their constantly justified details of clothing
and or appearance. Those things, any and all of
them, are not the wheels which move us forward in accomplishment
for Jesus Christ. Those things are nothing but
