David's Legacy

David was also much taken up with the legacy he would leave behind him after he had died. As he nears his own death, it is not the time now to be absorbed in battles or conquests against enemies. He wants to lay foundations for the future. He is looking to make preparations for the time after he has gone. It is there in his words to his son, Solomon, who is to succeed him as king.

So we see that David was looking beyond himself to the future, making preparations for future government and worship, as well as investing time in key people like his son, Solomon.
