Proverbs 16.27 says, An ungodly man diggeth up evil, and in his lips there is as a burning fire. About 15 years ago, we published a documentary about Billy Graham. The documentary was a factual account of how that Billy didn't, quote, go bad, end quote, as many falsely believe, but that Billy Graham's ministry was promoting a form of Christian universalism from the very beginning of his ministry in his Decision magazine, and that Billy only used fundamentalist leaders like Bob Jones, John R. Rice, and others in order to gain notoriety and influence. We don't have time to go into details about that, but you can find the documentary on Sermon Audio and Rumble at the time of this recording by simply searching for the title, Billy Graham, Forerunner to Antichrist. That documentary angered many people who have made a god out of Billy and who put their allegiance in the personality cult of Billy Graham above their commitment to the word of God and truth. And one particular lady sent me a short rebuke and she quoted the first half of our proverb, an ungodly man diggeth up evil. And since this may happen to you when you bring up legitimate concerns about others, I think we should take a moment to address such accusations. For example, as we discussed in our previous Proverb Devotional, this is addressed toward those with an evil intent who seek to slander and destroy others without legitimate justification. If you have someone who's being considered in your church for leadership and you ask about their past or bring up their criminal record, and you're not intending to misrepresent or destroy that person, but to protect the local church from a bad situation, then this proverb is not about you. But if you don't like somebody attending your church and you just go around digging up their past in order to spread the information and destroy their reputation, then our proverb applies to you. We must be careful to understand how this proverb applies and how it does not. The ministry of Billy Graham has borne mixed fruit. We are thankful for anyone saved as a result of the gospel being preached. As Paul said in Philippians 1.18, What then? Notwithstanding every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached, and I therein do rejoice. Yea, and will rejoice. But as far as Billy watering down repentance, promoting the idea that people could be saved without even knowing Jesus, and joining with the Roman Catholic cult and the apostate ecumenical movement in addition to promoting corrupt Bible versions and promoting false teachers, etc. It's all documented in our documentary. We stand where Paul stood when he named names of preachers in order to warn believers of their bad theology and practice, as he wrote in 1 Timothy 1, 19 and 20, holding faith and a good conscience, which some, having put away concerning faith, have made shipwreck, of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. We should never dig up past sins or dirt to destroy someone with motives that are not pure or sanctioned by God's word. In that sense, we understand the words of our proverb, an ungodly man diggeth up evil. Exposing unrepentant sin, when that person has confessed to the Lord and been forgiven, that's the work of Satan. We should never do or condone such a thing. And we can thank God that repentant lost sinners can and do find eternal forgiveness by the blood of Jesus Christ, our wonderful Lord and Savior, when they repent toward God with faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting in His shed blood in death on the cross, and the power of His resurrection for eternal life. And Christians who rebel or fail can repent and find forgiveness as well, as were promised in 1 John 1, 9. And if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. These are all precious promises and they are all ours by faith in Jesus Christ. Let's be faithful to our Savior and faithful to His Word.
