Proverbs 14.8 says, The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit. The unsaved man who knowingly goes about his life without turning to Jesus Christ for the salvation of his soul is a fool. He may have street smarts. He may or she may be a decent human being. He may be a decent husband, father, brother, son, and friend. She may be a caring wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. But still, such a person who neglects their sole salvation is a fool. The Pharisees were such people. They were the pillars of first century AD Jewish society. They were law-abiding citizens, good businessmen. Once married, most had children. But in Luke 24, 25, Jesus said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart, to believe all that the prophets have spoken. But the folly of fools is deceit. Jesus once told the parable of a certain rich man who was a very profitable businessman. His farm was producing so much fruit that his barns were busting. So he did the prudent thing from a business standpoint and made plans to redesign his facilities. He'd tear down those insufficient buildings and build bigger barns with better storage capabilities. If he were operating today, he'd have the latest inventory software system installed and the best security system installed. The barns would be temperature controlled and have the most efficient docking system for deliveries, and that's all to be applauded and respected on a business level. But this prudent businessman had neglected the most important thing, his soul. And as he stood there one day congratulating himself on his business savvy, His expert planning and I'm sure he thought that you know He'd had some good luck because that's how the godless and superstitious think about these things Jesus said that God spoke to this man and tells us in Luke 12 20, but God said unto him thou fool This night thy soul shall be required of thee then whose shall those things be which thou has provided and This successful farmer had failed to give any thought for his soul. He was careful and wise when it came to fruit, but a fool when it came to his own soul. And Jesus then says in Luke 12, 21, so is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. I will admit that I wasn't even a good businessman when the Lord convicted me of being a fool. I was making $1 above minimum wage. and had no health benefits. I was in a bad relationship, well, many, with friends and girls. I wasn't using what money I did make very wisely. I didn't have any savings. I didn't have any plan for my life. I was only 19 years old, but I knew that I was being a fool, and if I didn't change my ways, I was heading for a dead-end life. And the Lord showed me that my soul may be required of me before I took my next breath or my next heartbeat. I had been living as though I would never die and face judgment. I had convinced myself that there would be no such judgment, and if there was a God, He wouldn't judge me too harshly. I had convinced myself that the Christian idea of God was pure myth. I was agnostic and didn't believe any religion was true. If there was a God, He wasn't like any of these man-made religions had invented. But the folly of fools is deceit. I am so thankful that God worked on my heart, opened my eyes with His Word to the truth of the Gospel, and mercifully allowed me to live long enough that I chose to receive His Word as the Word of God and be changed from a fool to an adopted child of God when I simply repented of all my foolish deceptions and turned to Him empty-handed with faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. as payment for my sins, and the power of His bodily resurrection as the victory over my sin, my death penalty, and my condemnation to a lake of fire. Any fool can join the rest of us sinners saved by grace by simply choosing to receive the Word of God and put your trust in that Gospel message for your eternal salvation. And at that moment the deception is over and you can now walk with Christ in the light of His Word through this life and into eternal life with Him.
296 "The Folly of Fools" (Proverbs 14:8) Our Daily Greg
The folly of fools is deceit. And it begins and ends with their self-deception regarding life, death and their eternal destiny. Because of their self-deceit, they neglect any meaningful consideration of the person and work of Jesus Christ, leaving their soul in a state of condemnation.
