Open your Bibles to John chapter 14. And verse 26. But the Helper. the Holy Spirit. Whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. We have a music teacher here with us today. And to some degree, all of us in our life, some more than others, have been responsible for teaching. It's a process. Sometimes we're involved in teaching in our own native language. Sometimes we're involved in teaching in a language that is not our native language. And there are various ways to teach. We want to teach our children. We teach them verbally. We instruct them. But probably more than that, we teach them by example, living the kind of life before them that we desire that they live. There are many ways of teaching. There are many ways of learning. Some people are what they would call self-taught. Their trade, perhaps a musical instrument they've learned on their own. Sometimes what you learn in one specific situation opens the door for you to learn in a different direction, but it forms the basis of the necessary fundamentals of learning. The Helper, the Holy Spirit sent by the Father. He will do what? He will teach. And that one little word, teach, opens the door to consider the fact that we have communion with the Holy Spirit. Notice, He will teach you all things, but there's something else. He will bring to your remembrance all that I have said." Now, it's amazing how learning builds on what we learn. It opens the door, it clarifies maybe a multitude of things that we grasp simply because we learn this. It's foundational to other areas of learning. I've had some good teachers in my lifetime, some excellent teachers. I often, in my teaching and preaching, refer to a man by the name of Howard Hendricks. He was my homiletics teacher at Dallas Seminary. I really, really, really, really admired Howard Hendricks. He was a communicator. He knew how to get across his point, and it stuck, and you wouldn't forget it. He was a blessing to the men that were able to have him in class. I'll give you an example, and you'll probably remember it for the rest of your life. In our class, he said, he was talking, teaching us about proper use of illustrations, which is what I'm fixing to do right now. He said, a man that knows how to use illustrations is like a man carrying a watermelon. He says, and he knows just when to drop it. He says, and seeds go everywhere. You've probably heard me say that before, but think of that. That's so true. That is so vivid. I'll never forget that. That's been years ago, but it's stuck. And he made his point, and it is true. Illustrations can be vivid, and some you will never, never forget. Now, let's look at those two words for our purposes. Teach and bring to remembrance. Do you not see the lights blinking with communion there in both of those activities? There's an interchange of, and there's communication of, yes, vocabulary, but vocabulary that is specific and arranged and timely, in whatever the event might be, to communicate. But think of that. The Holy Spirit will teach. That is amazing. That is beyond our comprehension to think that, yes, the Holy Spirit teaches truth in many ways through the reading of his word, through prayer, through examples, through things we've experienced in life. What about remembrance? Like the guy said, I have a good memory. It's just short. He said, I can remember most anything for a couple of minutes. But think of the Holy Spirit bringing things, particularly truth, God's truth, God's turn of truth at a timely time, so to speak, perhaps in a private conversation, perhaps in a counseling setting, perhaps in a preaching or teaching situation, is it not true that the Holy Spirit can and does bring to remembrance a scripture verse, an illustration or the use of a scripture verse, or an experience of life years ago, just suited for the moment of your counseling, the moment of your dealing one-on-one perhaps with a person situation. So, Here is the Holy Spirit carrying out his ministry to us. But do you not see, even in all of the facets we've touched on so far this morning, that there is somehow a very vital part in those activities? Communion, the Holy Spirit communicating to us, our Hendricks, communicating its communication, and it is valuable, and it is timely. Christ promises that the Holy Spirit shall do this work, that they, the disciples, might infallibly give out to others what he had given to them. Do you see the connections? It's so vital in our ministry particularly, and I say it's so vital even in our responsibility for raising our children. The right thing at the right time is very important in communicating to your children and training them. Now, Christ promises that the Holy Spirit will do this work. Why? For what reason? For what purpose? that they, the disciples, might infallibly give out what he had given to them. That's it. Well, how valuable is that? Turn with me to 2 Peter 1, verse 21. 2 Peter 1, verse 21. For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will. But, but, men, what kind of men? How are they described? Men moved by the Holy Spirit, spoke from God. You could spend the rest of the afternoon Contemplating that, do you see the efficacy? It's not just because he has a doctor's degree. Moved by the Holy Spirit. Spoke from God. Now, Again, I ask you quite pointedly, is that not communion? In its essence, at the right time, at the right place, with the right words, so to speak. What are the basic elements to effective communion? What would you say they are? I've already mentioned some of them. Basic elements of effective communication. Yes? Clarity. Amen. Very good. What else? Listening. Okay, that's involved, yes. This is what we used. Good illustrations. Yes? We mentioned bringing to remembrance, so the illustrations help bring to remembrance because we don't forget them. Good. Something that's vivid. Yes. Very, very, very true. Very true. Now, let's go back to 2 Peter 1, 21. For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will. Now we're talking about some real communication. But men, moved by the Holy Spirit, spoke. from God. That is the epitome of effective communication. It's men speaking, but speaking motivated by God. So who's speaking? It's God speaking. making use of men, but ultimately it's coming from God, through them. Men moved, moved by the Holy Spirit, spoke. How did they speak? Two little words, from God. This is some, today we're going over some last week's lessons. I'm a very stickler on review. In teaching art preaching, it's like taking a pen and underlining it in your brain. It helps. I'm going to read this rather deliberately. I want you to hear it because it's, I think, very helpful. It's a quote by John Owen, so listen carefully. He had been speaking to them things suited for their consolation. giving them precious promises of the supplies they should have from Him in this life. Of the love of the Father, of the glory He was providing for them. If we could just stop right there and contemplate the subject matter of our Lord. Worth listening to. of the glory he was providing for them. Think of this, the sense and comfort whereof was unspeakable. Let that soak in. The sense and comfort whereof is unspeakable. Listen to this one. and the joy arising from them full of glory. That's a wonderful description of what was going on between our Lord and the disciples. But, saith he, I know how unable you are to make use of these things for your own consolation. He knew their weaknesses, their human frailty. He knew that. Therefore, the Spirit shall recover them upon your minds. What a ministry of the Holy Spirit, that at the right time, in the right setting, the right situation, The Holy Spirit's gonna do what? Very powerfully, very vividly, very pointedly, bring the issue to your mind and to your heart and to your soul. Shall recover them upon your minds, notice this, in their full strength. It's gonna come with power. and vigor for, I'm supplying some words here, for the power or the end or the purpose for which I speak them. God had a purpose and he's going to see to it that that purpose is conveyed effectively to them. And this is one cause why It is expedient for believers that Christ's bodily absence should be supplied by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Well, I hope you grasp the impact of that. What was happening here? The Savior was going to be gone. But what was going to take the place? The Holy Spirit speaking powerfully. Then what else? Bringing to remembrance. What a precious ministry of the Holy Spirit, bringing to your mind, your heart, your life, truth. at the right time, in the right place, in the right setting, that is exactly suited to the moment. That's fellowship. That's communion on the highest level. While Christ was with them, listen carefully, while Christ was with them, how little efficacy on their hearts had any of the heavenly promises he gave them. That's quite a statement. But that's not all of it. Listen carefully. When the Spirit came, how full of joy did He make all things to them. I continue. That which was His peculiar work, work of the Holy Spirit, which belonged to him by virtue of his office, that he also might be glorified was reserved for him, and this is his work to the end of the world." Today, tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. How much do we think about that? How much is that a reality to you? When you're teaching a lesson, when you're in the dorm, when you're on the job, do we ever think of it? Does it ever come to our mind, powerfully, ministering, to our poor souls. And this is his work to the end of the world. To bring the promises of Christ to our minds and hearts, to give us comfort of them, the joy and sweetness of them. Now listen, grab this. much beyond that which the disciples found in them, when Christ in person spake to them. This is, well, I'll use the word one time, I heard it used and I had to think about it. Pregnant with meaning. Isn't it? Much beyond that which the disciples found in them. Sometimes we think, oh, if I could have just been there with the disciples. Really? Really? Much beyond that which the disciples found in them, when Christ in person spoke to them, their gracious influence being then restrained that, as was said, the dispensation of the Spirit might be glorified. John 14, 27. Our Lord says, peace, I'll leave with you. Notice two little words. My peace. My peace. I give to you, not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. Dear ones, the comforter being sent to bring what Christ said to remembrance, the result of it is what? Real peace. Real peace and freedom from trouble of heart. Your heart over your trouble. Come on now. Does your heart ever get troubled? Maybe with the pressure of various things in life, trials, tribulations, illness, sickness, loved ones. Does your heart ever get troubled? Mine does. What are we told here? Let not your heart, let not your heart be troubled. Whatever peace, whatever relief, whatever comfort, whatever joy, our support that we have at any given time or situation, that we have received all belongs to the dispensation of the comforter, ministering to our hearts, our souls. Here's a very important fact. Listen carefully. It is vain for the believer to attempt to achieve peace and comfort from the Word of God without the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Why? He alone can bring true peace, relief, comfort, and joy. Why would I use the word true peace? Because there's a false peace that the world can give. Turn the music up a little bit louder. or whatever, jam the nerve endings somehow, add to religion or church entertainment. Dear ones, he alone can bring true peace relief, comfort, and joy. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, leaving the efficacy even of those promises which in person he gave to his apostles in their very great distress, as to their consolation, he leaves it to the Holy Spirit. we may see the immediate fountainhead of it all, the spiritual comfort we have in this world, the fellowship which we have for the Holy Spirit. So, that in general is what is set before us. Our Savior leaving the advocacy, even of those promises which in person was given to his apostles at a time of great distress. We may see something. We may see the immediate spring of all or any of spiritual comfort we will ever have in this world. Everything else is a counterfeit. We're dealing with the works of the Holy Spirit. I think we have enough to think about. and take home with us. Sometimes, going through some of this material, I feel like there's an overload, because it's just weighty. I think it might have been Howard Hendricks, pregnant with meaning. Let's take that home with us today and make use of it for our own personal growth and comfort in the Lord concerning the place, the work of the Holy Spirit and seek to implement that in our life. Let's pray. Father, we ask now that you would bless your word, your truth to our hearts, our needy hearts. We live in a world of stress, sometimes anxieties. Dear Lord, help us to understand these truths in such a way that we may, in a very practical day by day, situation by situation, apply them to our comfort, our spiritual comfort. Now, bless as we proceed to our worship service, particularly bless our brother as he will give his testimony today. We pray and ask these things in Christ's name. Amen.
