We'll also pray for Sheila this
morning. She's got a bad migraine this
morning. Pray it'll get better and she'll
be able to be at church tonight. And Miss Susie is in Piney Grove. Nursing home, I don't know if
that's the exact title of it or not, but it's Piney Grove.
In Connersville, she is under hospice care there. I wouldn't
see her. The hospice nurse was actually
there when I went to see her, and she said that Susie is in
actively dying stage. The second time I went to see
her, she tried to talk, couldn't understand her through the oxygen
mask. First time she didn't, she never
uttered a sound, talking with her. And it wouldn't seem like
she was all that bad. But she doesn't move any part
of her body. She doesn't turn her head, doesn't
raise her hands, doesn't twist. You see her moving her eyes and
her mouth, and that's all you see move. But that's what the
nurse called it, was actively dying stage. I really don't know
what all her conditions are that brought her to that, but that's
where she's at right now. And you know, that could last
a long time, could be a short time. Just pray for Susie, the
Lord's will be done there. did talk to her about the Lord
and as I assumed, but I wanted to know, she's ready to meet
the Lord. So that's good and she'll be in a far better place
when the Lord decides it's time for her to come home. So we are
on lesson 6, number 1 and A was the conference. Anybody need
an outline for number 6? 1, 2, 3, 4. Y'all have to give Eddie a minute,
raise your hands back up. So, A, whoop, I done messed up now,
I hit the wrong, I don't know how that happened. We are done,
okay. I'll just have to tell you what
it says. Are you still back there? Eddie's gonna set it back up,
I didn't know he was still back there. I don't think that did it. I
don't think that did it. OK. He's back. All right. A is the conference. Thank you, Carter. A is the conference. And then B, we're talking about
the cross. Of course, now, the Lord's program
is number one. Then A is the conference. And
B is the cross. So we're finishing up what we
had to say about the cross. And in Hebrews 10, 14, finish
that section of scripture we started at the end of last week. It says, For by one offering
he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. Of course,
we also talked about all the offerings and sacrifices in the
Old Testament and how that Jesus offered himself once and for
all. on the cross and in Galatians
4, 4-7. Verse 4 says, But when the fullness
of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman,
made under the law. So that's when God became man
when Jesus came to this earth. Now verse 5, To redeem them that
were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
So God became man to make us sons of God. And verse 6, And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his
Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. So because we are
the sons of God, we also have received the Spirit of God. And verse 7 says, Wherefore thou
art no more a servant, but a son. And if a son, then an heir of
God through Christ. So we're the sons of God. We
have the spirit of God and we are heirs with Christ. We can't elevate ourselves up. But through Christ, because of
Christ, God elevates us up to these positions. And it's only
through Christ can we get there. Then Matthew chapter 26 verse
39 and some other verses there. And he went a little further
and fell on his face and prayed. Oh, my father, if it be possible,
let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will,
but as thou wilt." Of course, we're talking about in Gethsemane. And verse 42 says, he went away
again the second time and prayed, saying, Oh, my father, if this
cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thou will
be done. And then later after Peter had
cut off the soldier's ear, Jesus tells him, thinkest thou that
I cannot now pray to my father and he will presently give me
more than twelve legions of angels. But how then shall the scriptures
be fulfilled and thus it must be. So the cross was necessary. Jesus died on the cross being
buried was necessary for him to rise again and that we may
be able to rise one day. So it was not something that
you will look back on and say good but it was good for us. Not good for Christ but he did
go through that for us. So we're going to get to the
next part. of the lesson. The disciples proposal and are
actually meant to go back and I didn't. I'm going to go back
and read it because some of you weren't here. I'm going to have
to read it. Take me just a minute to get to it here. I'm going to read Luke 9, 28
through 36 this time. Well, where is it at? I didn't go back far enough. Yeah, Luke 9, 28 through 36. Of course, this is what the lesson
is about, this part of the scripture. And it came to pass about an
eight days after these things, he took Peter and John and James
and went up to a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion
of his countenance was altered and his raiment was white and
glistering. And behold, there talked with
him two men, which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory
and spake of his decease, which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were
with him were heavy with sleep, and when they were awake, they
saw his glory. And the two men that stood with
him. And it came to pass as they departed
from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master it is good for us to be
here and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee and one for Moses
and one for Elias, not knowing what he said. While he thus spake,
there came a cloud and overshadowed them, and they feared as they
entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of
the cloud saying, This is my beloved son, hear him. And when the voice was passed,
Jesus was found alone, and they kept it close and told no man
in those days any of those things which they had seen. So they
didn't go back and tell the other disciples, Jesus told them not
to tell anybody. They didn't go back and tell
anybody about what happened until Jesus had gone back into heaven. But there where it says the cloud
came down, if you remember in the Old Testament, when God spoke
to the congregation, He spoke from the cloud. And this is the
same thing here. He is speaking from the cloud. Now let me get back to where
we need to be. the disciples' proposal. So we
have this great event happening and Peter comes up with this
great idea. When I say great, I mean big.
Not necessarily that's good. Great's not always good. But in the verses we just read,
only in Luke does it tell us that they were heavy with sleep.
And so when they were there, when Moses and Elias was talking
with Jesus, they woke up enough to see it. And of course then
they were aroused, then they were wide awake. And as you can imagine,
if you woke up and you saw Jesus and Moses and Elias talking together,
you'd wake up pretty quick, I would imagine. And so I imagine they
did too. Has anyone ever taken you somewhere
and surprised you when you got there? That's what Jesus did
with Peter, James, and John. They didn't know why he was going
up there. They were going up to a mountain to pray or going
up to be awake. It doesn't even tell us that
they knew they were going to pray. He just said, y'all come
on, and they followed him. Imagine how awestruck they were
when they awakened out of their slumber and saw this. It was
a magnificent thing. And so, in Matthew 17 and 2,
it says, and was transfigured before them,
and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white
as the light. And then Mark 9 says, And his
raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, as no fuller on
earth can white them. Have you ever been out after
a snow, and that snow is frozen hard on top, and it's clear skies,
and the sun's shining, and you try to look across that snow,
you might as well look straight up into the sun. You can't, you
can't, you have to block your eyes. And that's what it's comparing
to the shine, how Jesus was shining when they awoke, when they were
awakened and saw him. You gotta, when you go outside
like that, you just about gotta wear sunglasses to see where
you're going. And so they were, of course it was pretty amazing
when they were awakened. And Luke 9, 29 again says, as
they pray, as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was
altered. and his raiment was white and glistering. Now that
word transfigured is the same word we get metamorphosis from. Of course, we know what that
is when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, right? Everybody
uses that word as far as an illustration. Well, what on that butterfly
looks like a caterpillar? Almost nothing, right? It is
a complete change. If you didn't know about metamorphosis
and somebody told you that butterfly was a caterpillar so many days
ago, you'd thought they were an idiot, right? So when they
look upon Jesus, they know it's Jesus but he is completely different. They've never seen him in this
way. There was a complete change.
They've seen Jesus before as a normal man, but they've never
seen him in his glory. And as much as their mortal eyes
could behold, they saw him in his glory. The personal experience
of the glory of God left a remarkable effect on Moses when Moses talked
with God. Exodus 33, 17 through 23, and
the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou
hast spoken, for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know
thee by name. And he said, I beseech thee,
show me thy glory. And he said, I will make all
my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name
of the Lord before thee, and will be gracious to whom I will
be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. And
he said, Thou canst not see my face, for there shall no man
see me and live. Now don't be mistaken in the
fact that, okay, if you were to ever see God, he would kill
you. That's not what that's saying. It's saying if you saw God, you
couldn't take it, you would die. Your body, your brain, it just
shut down. And the Lord said, Behold, there
is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock. And it shall
come to pass, while my glory passes by, that I will put thee
in a cliff to the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while
I pass by. And I will take away mine hand,
and thou shalt see my back parts, but my face shall not be seen. And in Exodus 34, 29 through
35, And it came to pass when Moses came down from Mount Sinai
with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came
down from the mount, that Moses wished not that the skin of his
face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the
children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face
shone, and they were afraid to come nigh him. And Moses called
unto them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation
returned unto him, and Moses talked with him. And afterward,
all the children of Israel came nigh, and he gave them in commandment
all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And
of course it goes on, the scriptures go on to say that Moses covered
his face. So then A, number two, is the
tribute. Now, when Peter first said something,
the first thing he said was really a wonderful response to what
he had saw. And it was completely accurate.
All three gospel accounts quote Peter as saying, Master, it is
good for us to be here. It's good to be in the presence
of the Lord, isn't it? Now he was exactly right. It
was good for them to be there. And you know, sometimes our problem
is we are where the Lord is trying to work spiritually and we don't
recognize it. We don't see what God wants us
to see. We don't hear what God wants
us to hear. It is a wise man who recognizes
at the time when something special of a spiritual nature is going
on. I know there's been times in my life when God would allow
me to take part in something and later I realized how important
it was. Or I realized what God was trying
to get me to do and I didn't do it because I didn't catch
it. I missed the opportunity. The Spirit of God may move in
a church service, a camp service or a special meeting between
two individuals even. Yet we're often unaware of what
God is trying to do. One of God's greatest sorrows
is that his own people take him for granted and we do that. We
do take God for granted. We have opportunity to advance
the cause of Christ and we don't take advantage of it. We let
the things of this world interfere with our thoughts and what God
wants us to do. And we're so heavy laden with
our earthly burdens that we don't take on the spiritual burden
as we should. In Malachi 1, 6 through 14, God
chastises a priest for not giving proper honor to his house and
his plan. And I'm just going to read parts
of that scripture in verse 6. O priest that despise my name,
and ye say wherein have we despised thy name? Verse 7, ye offer polluted
bread upon mine altar. Verse 8, and ye offer the blind
for sacrifice, and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not
evil? And then down verse 13, ye said also, behold, what a
weariness it is, and ye have snuffed at it. And you brought
that which was torn and the lame and the sick thus you brought
an offering. You see. We want to give God
what we want him to have. And we know what God wants us
to give him. But we want to decide how much
of that we want to let go of. Whether it's money, time, talent,
whatever it is, I'll give him this much. And we try to set
that basis instead of listening to the Lord. He will make known
to us what he wants us to give him. So how do we recognize God
working in our daily lives? By attributing daily blessings
to him. Don't let a day go by and something
good happen without saying the Lord is good. The Lord has allowed
that to happen. When he helps you with something,
recognize it as his help. I do this almost every time and
I did it years ago. And I'll tell you the reason,
I think the reason I started doing it, I used to work with
another mechanic, and he was a great mechanic, but something
physically with him, don't know whether it was something he was
born with or something that he did in his past that caused him
to do this, but he shook. And he dropped wrenches all the
time. It wouldn't have been good for
him to take the top of the engine off and work on top of the engine.
He'd drop something in it. I mean, if he worked 30 minutes,
he's gonna drop something. And I, you know, noticed he did.
I never said anything to him about it. But I noticed later,
after that, sometime after that, that, you know, every mechanic
drops wrenches from time to time. And I would thank the Lord that
I didn't do it like he did. You know, I wasn't that bad. So I thank the Lord And then
I began to thank the Lord when I could find what I dropped.
And I found out when I started thanking the Lord, when I found
something, most of the time I found it. And I would thank Him. And the Lord gave me that sense
of where something, I remember when I was growing up, dropped
something, and Dad said, well find it. I couldn't find it. You dropped it, you ought to
know where it's at. Now he didn't cut no punches. He didn't cut
no punches. And I gained that ability and
I think it was because I thanked the Lord for helping me find
stuff. And as a mechanic, you need to
know where stuff goes when you drop it. Because you're going
to drop stuff. But we ought to thank God for
things as they happen. We ought to thank God for being,
even if He's not doing something specifically for us, we ought
to thank God for just being where something, where God is moving.
We ought to be thankful for it. We must walk in the Spirit and
be sensitive to His leading and responsive to His guidance. So you have to give Him the thanks
and then you have to Listen and be responsive once he has done
something for you. Recognize that back to him. Don't
just take it for granted. Don't just say, well, it just
happened. No, it didn't just happen. As
we draw closer to him and away from negative influences, that'll
be easier for us to do. We learn to appreciate God's
goodness. Alright, we talked about the
tribute, what Peter said good. And now we'll talk about the
tabernacles. Of course, his first statement
was excellent, and then his second statement was just as bad as
the first one was good. So, you know, and we know, we've
already said enough to Peter, we already knew it before we
started the study of Peter, that he's the one that speaks up,
right? You ever had a group of friends, there's one friend in
the group that always says, you know what I think? Before you
get done telling what you're telling, you know what I think?
They've got a comment on whatever you're talking about. Now, the
other disciples might have thought, oh, Peter, just sit down. But
you know what I think they thought? Let Peter ask. Let him get in
trouble. If you search some of the things
out that Peter did where Peter was outspoken for the wrong reason,
if you read all the Gospels and compare the notes in those Gospels,
you'll find out that the others were warned to know too. They
didn't say, Peter, you go do it. But they sure was waiting
on him and hoping he would. That's the same thing with doubting
Thomas. It says that Thomas doubted. But if you read the Scriptures,
the rest of them did too. But we blame it all on Thomas. Let Peter ask. Let him get in
trouble. He impulsively proposed to put these tabernacles up.
And pay attention to what was going on or what had already
happened to Peter when he said this. Now, if one of us in here
said, we ought to worship God and anything. We'd say, are you
crazy? That wouldn't get by us, right?
We would catch that. We know better. Well, Peter knew
better too, but he was impulsive. And when this happened was six
days after being rebuked by God the Son for his comments on the
crucifixion. He is about to be rebuked by
God the Father for his comments on the tabernacle. Peter learned
the lesson but he forgot the lesson. Luke described Peter
as not knowing what he said. Peter believed the occasion called
for a religious ceremony of some kind. He said, this is great,
we gotta commemorate it some way. And that's what he's thinking.
He's not thinking bad, but he just spurts out something that
really doesn't make sense, it's just really wrong. The way of
illustration, a preacher was on board an airline, airplane,
and it was going through just terrible turbulence, and everybody
was getting worried And somebody looked over at him and he knew
he was a preacher and he said, he said, quick, do something
religious. So the preacher took up offering. That's religious, right? We sometimes
substitute religious rituals for the privilege of a real relationship
with the Lord. Well, I'm going to go through
the steps, but I really ain't talking to God at all. I really
don't know what God wants, but everybody else thinks I know
what God wants. For example, we partake in communion,
we're solemn, but are we in communion with God? We drink the juice,
but are we being thankful for the blood? We eat the bread,
but are we remembering his suffering? If you're just doing what's commanded,
it's just something religious. If you're doing it for the right
reasons, it's communion. The issue was Peter was actually
placing Moses and Elijah on the same plane, on the same level
as Jesus, thinking each deserved a tabernacle. He lost sight of
who he earlier had acknowledged Jesus to be in Matthew 16, 16.
And Simon Peter answered, said, Thou art the Christ, the Son
of the living God. Well, he knew that. How did he
try to bring somebody else up to the equal level? He wasn't
saying they were God, but he said they deserve the praise
just as much as you do, but they don't. Nobody does. Peter 16, 22, Then Peter took
him and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee,
Lord, this shall not be unto thee. So that, he said that,
and then again six days later, Oh, Jesus, it's good for us to
be here. Let's build a tabernacle for all y'all. No, that's the
way we would have said it, right? We wouldn't went through all
names, we just said all y'all. He tried to keep Christ from
going to the cross and then he denied Christ his rightful place
of worship. He was lacking in proper reverence
for the Lord. As I said in the start of the
lesson, We all need a lesson on reverence. We all need to
revisit a refresher course on reverence for the Lord. Well,
we'll pick up right there on number three next week. Let's
pray. Lord, we thank you for this opportunity
you've given us to be here. Lord, we'll remember the prayer
request, Lord, especially Miss Susie this morning, Lord, I pray.
Lord that Lord your will would be done in her life. No, we're
thankful Lord that she has a Testimony that she saves she knows you
and she'll meet you Lord when you when you call her home And
though we pray for service today pray for pastors. He preaches
in Jesus name. We pray. Amen
