If you will take with me in your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 7. Beautiful passage set before us this morning. Verses 23 and 24. We will read through verse 25. The former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office. But he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever consequently. He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Let's pray, oramos. Father God, thank you that you have given us one who stands to make intercession continually. One who continues forever and one whose ministry is permanent. One who doesn't fade. One who got removed because of death. One who in death finished it. And in death conquered death. And in his own self took upon him the sin of us all and made intercession for us. Thank you for our mediator, Lord. Let us see him all the more beautiful this morning in this text. In Jesus' name I pray, amen. You may be seated. Many ask the question, if you died today, where would you go? Muchos hacen la pregunta, si mueres hoy, donde iras? I love how John MacArthur poses the question. We sing a beautiful answer to that today. What if our answer sounded something like this? Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea. A great high priest whose name is love, whoever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands. My name is written on his heart. I know that while in heaven he stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart. No tongue can bid me thence depart. What a sure answer. What if the next question went something like this? I'm reminded in Pilgrim's Progress when they go into a beautiful house. Do you struggle against sin? Well, how do you have any assurance? What if our answer was like this, when Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within? Upward I look and see Him there, who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free. For God the just is satisfied to look on Him and pardon me. ¿Qué tal si nuestra respuesta a esta pregunta fue algo así? The doctrine of the priesthood of Christ. Doctrine of the priesthood of Christ. Paul in this section of Hebrews, Pablo in this section of Hebrews, has walked us through this beautiful doctrine of our high priest. In the order of Melchizedek, in the order of Melchizedek, this great doctrine that he has so much to say. And I pray this morning that you have not closed your ears to it. He's got one more argument for us in these three verses. We will cover the first two verses today and finish with the end of the argument next week. His first argument, he's going to give us a state and condition of the Levitical priest by reason of their mortality. Because he lives forever. So first I want us to see this morning the state and the condition of the Levitical priests because of their mortality. If you will, look at me at verse 23. You need to know this on the onset of this argument. Debes saber este, en este lado del argumento. Many in number is not a good thing here. Mucho en numero no es algo bueno aqui. He is saying it's something wrong with this Law. Something wrong with this priesthood. And something that lacks in this covenant. He introduces this argument, they were many. He introduces this argument, they were many, by way of connection, with a form of connection. And the connection of Christ and Melchizedek, the connection of Christ and Melchizedek. And so we have here a connection and an affirmation. In the Greek it's a little bit strangely written here. The conjunction is just simply chi. Which we translate and. And it's just connecting what he's saying to what he said before. And we must not miss this. Look at verse 22. This is his argument. This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. Versicle 22, dice así. Por eso Jesús ha venido a ser fiador de un mejor pacto. And in several places in the Bible, it's passed over, because sometimes it doesn't make sense in English. The affirmation that Paul gives here is that the priests were many under Levi. La afirmación que Pablo da aquí es que los sacerdotes eran mucho abajo de Levi. We translate the phrase here, they were many, there were many made priests. Podemos traducir la frase aquí, había muchos hechos sacerdotes. That's what is clearly communicated. We need to make sure that we understand which priest he's speaking of. He's speaking of the high priest. So we would have a group of priests and one chosen among them to be the high priest. That's the priest he's referring to. They were many. The law only permitted one high priest at a time. Now, there were times when there were more, but it was a confusion not according to the law. not according to the decree of God. So, what Paul is saying here, what Pablo is saying here is, God appointed many under Levi in the order of Aaron. God appointed many in the order of Levi under Aaron. to be made priests. If you look at the history in the Bible, under the tabernacle, in the tabernacle, you have 13 high priests in that time. If you look back, you can see who the high priest was and see the relation to the community. And so in the time of the tabernacle, there were 13. Under the first temple, there were 18. And then there were a lot more under the second. one of the historians, una de los historicos, said, your rulers were many because of your sins. So there was an order to it. They were after the Levites. There was a way in which they were chosen. And this order, hear me, shows imperfection. Because there is an order, one to come later, it shows a problem. God showed us by means of this orderly secession, the imperfection of these priests. You need to know something very clear. In the new covenant, there's no weakness in the priesthood. There's no order. There's only one. Third. I want you to see the reason why there were so many priests under the order of Levi. Our text says because they were prevented by death. They died. They were mortal men who were subject to death. And in hombres mortales sujetos a la muerte, they died and they stayed dead. Ellos murieron y quedaban muertos. Death would not allow them to continue. La muerte no dejaba que continuaba. Now this is interesting. This is interesting. I don't often do this, but I want you to see something. If everybody would take with me in your Bibles to Numbers chapter 20. Now, let me give you a setting. Deja mirarte un escenario. God has appointed Aaron as the priest. But Aaron is now old. So the question is, what are we going to do now? And you have this very strange act of God. Starting in verse 25. Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up to Mount Hor and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son and Aaron should be gathered to his people and shall die there. Moses did as the Lord commanded. And they went up Mount Hor and the side of all the congregation. And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain, and when all the congregation saw that Aaron had perished, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron for 30 days. Dice en numeros 20, empezando en versículo 25. Take Aaron and his son Elisha and bring them to Mount Hor and take off Aaron's garments and put them on his son Elisha. Then Aaron will be gathered together with his people and he will die there. Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and they went up to Mount Hore before the eyes of all the congregation. And after Moses took off Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar, Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. And Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. So, think about this with me. Moses gets a word from the Lord. Gather all the nation. Bring them to this mountain. And bring Aaron. And bring his son. because he's gonna die there in front of everybody. Porque va a morir ahi en frente de todos. I want everybody in the congregation to come to this mountain and see Aaron die. Quiero que todos en la congregacion vienan a este monte y ver Aaron morir. And there's something strange about this passage. Algo extraño del pasaje. It doesn't say remove his clothes. No dice quita su ropa. It says strip him. Quitalo, but it's a strong word. It's una palabra fuerte. It's like ripping them off. It's como rascandolos. He says, so take Aaron and take off these clothes. Quitaron de su ropa and everybody's gonna see him die. Y todos va a verlo morir. Why would God do that? Por que Dios hara eso? He loved Aaron. Lo amaba a Aaron. Aaron was one of them. Why would God set him before the people to die? One reason, to show the nature of his priesthood. This ends with him. And another one's coming, he's gonna die too. To show the weakness. The inability of the type. La inabilidad del tipo. The nature of the Levitical priesthood. Who's gonna forever make intercession. Que para siempre va a hacer intercesión. But he ain't it. Pero el no es. Look. We can see Paul making a few points here. First, he shows us that the end was made to the priesthood personal administration by their death. They were done. When they died, they're done. Because it was always interrupted. Think about it. Maybe you have a priest that serves that you really like. And you're excited to go to Jerusalem this year. And you get there and he dies. It's not so in the New Testament, New Covenant. But we have to ask a question. It seems like the obvious question. Why was it necessary that they continue? Why do we need a priest to continue? What is wrong with one followed by another? Why is it necessary for the continual administration of the sacerdotal office For the church, because it is necessary for the continual administration of the office of priesthood by the church. For Paul, the interruption of the office by death. For Pablo, the interruption of the office by death is an argument of weakness. It's an argument of weakness of that priesthood, of that priesthood. Let me give you an answer. Why? The high priest was the sponsor or mediator of the covenant. El sumo sacerdote es el sponsor o mediador del pacto. But can a people really have peace in a mediator that's going to die? Can they trust him? I think of Hannah. When she bypasses Eli. And she just goes to God. I'm just going to God. Can there be any true reconciliation between God and man with such instability? ¿Puede ser una reconciliación entre Dios y el hombre con tanto instabilidad? The next verse tells us that something greater is given. But I have to also ask the question, because I'm Baptist, if these priests could not continue, and the lack of their perpetuity, of their priesthood according to Paul here, is a bad thing. He's saying because they could not continue, they weren't sufficient. How can that be the substance of that priesthood be Christ? If they can't continue. If they can't live forever and make intercession. Can they serve as a type? Yes, see, can the substance be Christ? No, they can't be his priesthood. Look at the state and condition of the priesthood of Christ. His glorious immortality. Paul, in opposition to the Levitical priesthood. The contrary, he's arguing here. It's confirmed in Christ. Paul's had one intent in this whole sermon. He's not speaking of a transition here. He's not saying we're gonna move from a good priesthood to a better. He's saying we're moving from one that didn't work to one who satisfies in every regard. I want you to see the one spoken of here. He's introduced. Look at verse 24. But he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever. Says but, pero. Against this, this, en contra esta, esta. This is the answer to this word in verse 23. Esa es la respuesta a la palabra en el versículo 23. You remember when we said they truly, cuando hablamos ellos verdaderamente. But he, pero el, these ones this, esto, esta, but this one, esto, is different, diferente. He's making a contrast. Old covenant, new covenant. The guarantor of a better covenant. It's him that we're speaking of. That's where they get the he here. The Spanish even adds Jesus. The Spanish even adds Jesus to mark it. To know that you're talking about him. The one who is the guarantor of a better covenant. This is not merely an argument of administration. but a distinction of nature and efficacy. These two covenants are effectual for different things. Second, segundo, I want you to see what's affirmed about Christ here. Quiero que veas que está confirmado sobre Cristo aquí. The end of the verse says, because he continues forever. El final de la versícula dice, puesto que permanece para siempre. And we must look at the end first and then come back to the middle. Tenemos que ver final, primera, y después regresar en principio. But it's not what Paul does here. He simply says, he continues. He has an uninterrupted administration is what Paul's saying. And this is what the Jews believed about the Messiah. Jesus dice, yo tengo que morir. And they were spooked. Respond like this. They just responded like this in John 12 and Juan 12. So the crowd answered him. We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this son of man? You just said he must die. But we've heard in the law, he's got to remain. That's what Paul argues here. He continues forever. He abides. He's not moving. They could not understand here, the crowd, how he would be lifted up. We see this principally typed by Melchizedek. There's no record of an end of his priesthood. The testimony of scripture is that he abides forever as a priest. That's not saying he didn't die. We don't have a secession. There's not an order that one comes later. We don't have, he passes it on. But then we have to ask the question, what about the death of Christ? Did he not die as well? And there's a big debate here. When did he become priest? Many want to argue on his ascension. I don't think so. That's not my opinion. Did Christ not die like Aaron died? Was this not the problem that the Jews had with Jesus? That he died. How can he be a priest? He died. Yes, he died. But was not forbidden to continue in office by his death. It's a priesthood that's not subject to change or to be altered. It's a priesthood that's not subject to change or to be altered. It's a priesthood that's not subject to change or to be altered. This word stands against their doctrine of a continued priesthood. No, no, no. His priesthood is not shared. The perpetuity of the priesthood of Christ depends on his own perpetual life. He did not take up the office for the church to lay it aside. I want to make an argument here because it's going to come up quickly. He is the priest of the elect. You cannot separate his priesthood from his work on the cross. You're gonna see that as we transition from seven to eight to nine. His priesthood is connected to his priestly work as a sacrifice. He shows us this in John 14, 19. Because I live, you also will live. The promise is that while he lives, he's taking care of us. The promise is, mientras el vive, el va a cuidar de nosotros. When Satan tempts me to despair. What can we do? I look up and see him there. The one who lives to make intercession. Church, we have a perpetual high priest that can't be transferred. Listen. The glory of the priesthood of Christ. For the church. Is bound up in this. His person and his work. The comfort to the church in chapter 13. I do not change. No cambiará. And if you go to the throne of grace looking for another, you will not find one. He laid down his life for us and took it up again. Not only does the preservation and stability of the church depend on this, but the communion of the church depends on Christ as our priest. Do we not see it in the table? Tonight we'll come. The elements will be laid out. And we'll see he ever lives to make intercession. He's our head. He's what holds the whole body together. He is all of our grace and all of our duties. I want you to think of this. Right now, his church is gathered. Together, assembled. To hear his word preached. And as Calvin says, when that's rightly done, it's like Christ himself is speaking to his church. All because He stands there. And lastly, último, the consolation of the church, the recompense of the church. Depends on a Christ eternally being there. Who he saw in Sunday school this morning, so many pictures of this. The book of life of the lamb that was slain. The one who is our mediator. Where is the hope of the church? Not that he'll send us another priest. Not that he'll send another way. No, no, no. The only hope of the church is that he stands there. The comfort of the church is that we have a high priest who's passed through the heavens. He went beyond the veil. that our anchor is thrown to the heavens, that on that day that he returns, that he'll stand up for us, and our priest will intercede, Stand before the God of eternity. And he's gonna call us by name. As the text we read this morning. He will announce us to God the Father. That's our hope. I wanna tell you this morning. There is a hope for each one of you. If you'll run to the Lord Jesus Christ and say, will you mediate for me? Can you go to the Father for me? I'm a sinner. My heart is deceitfully wicked. And I heard this morning that you'll go to the Father for me. He stands there to make intercession. And he gives a promise. If you come to him, he'll no way cast you out. If you come to him, you'll always be received. Si vienes a el, siempre vas a ser recibido. He will intercede for you. El te intercede por ti. If you'll go to him, si tu vayas a el, and you'll believe, y creas, he died for my sins. El murio por mis pecados. He did what these other priests couldn't even think of doing. El hizo lo que esos otros sacerdotes ni podia pensar de hacerlo. He laid down His life and He took it up. Él entregó su vida y retomó. And if you'll go to Him, He'll receive you. Si vas a Él, Él te recibirá. Church, iglesia. You can go a lot of places to try to find help. We can go to Vanity Fair and say, you know what, maybe that ointment will work. If you go outside of our church right now, out of the sanctuary, you'll see a table set up and it looks appealing. All of our kids pass by there and they say, hey, I want one, I want one, I want one. I'm yelling at my kids all day yesterday. I've taught you your whole life. Put your fingers in your ears and say, I buy truth. All that stuff on that table is appealing to kids. We do the same thing. Is it not enough that we have one who stands to make intercession? Is it not enough that we have one that is forever there that never changes? And that he's invited us to come? You don't need another. You don't need anything or anybody. Christ is sufficient. The message that Paul is giving to the church, el mensaje de Pablo de la iglesia, stop running to everything else and go to Christ. He's enough.
