Paul explains to us in this passage that the Christian life is neither sinless perfectionism nor passive coasting, but is rather marked by active obedience. So Paul urges us to press on for the prize, forgetting the things behind us that have caused us to stumble and fall, whether such falls were self-inflicted or caused by others.
