Well, here we are again on a Wednesday night at Myrtle Baptist Church, and I'm looking forward to the night. I'm excited about what we're going to be learning from the Word of God, excited about what you're going to be hearing in music form. We're going to sing together. We've got a special song for you tonight. AND I'M JUST LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SERVICE AND PRAY THAT GOD WOULD USE IT TO BENEFIT YOUR LIFE, THAT YOU'LL LEARN SOME THINGS TONIGHT, AND THAT YOU'LL BE ENCOURAGED AND EDIFIED THROUGH THE ENTIRE SERVICE. BUT LET'S GO TO THE LORD IN PRAYER. WE'RE GOING TO BE IN REVELATION CHAPTER 17 TONIGHT. IF YOU WANT TO BE TAKING YOUR BIBLES AND TURNING THERE. So glad that the king left his throne and came so that we could go free. Amen. Well, let's take our Bibles and be turned into Revelation Chapter 17. I want to mention some people that we need to pray for tonight before we get into our study of this chapter. We need to pray for Brother Mike Bennett. Please pray for him. He's not been feeling well lately. We also need to pray for Sister Bobbi Ransom's mother. She's down there in the hospital with her right now, so we need to pray for her. Little Ellie Satterfield, let's continue praying for her. And Samuel and Mackenzie Wood, please keep them on your hearts and on your prayer list. Brother Leo and Sister Margaret Gertz, and Ted and Laurie Engle, please pray for them. They're in the process of selling and moving. And then Navar and Jessica Hahn, let's pray for all of these that God would, in a special way, we want to keep this prayer list going and keep it on your hearts and minds so that you'll know how to pray for the people of our church during this time that we're not being able to assemble together. I don't know what's in the air here in Gainesville, North Georgia, but it's got me all clogged up. I've been sneezing all day long today, and I've got kind of a raspy throat, but I pray that God would use what little bit of body I do have to fulfill His will tonight and to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. When Revelation chapter 17 And I pray that you would take your Bibles and turn there, and be sure to keep your Bibles open and follow along tonight as we go through this chapter together. There's two chapters, Revelation 17 and 18, that's basically talking about one given subject, and it's about a city. and we're going to study that city in detail and look at it from the Word of God, and the Word of God will define it for us, it'll describe it for us, and it'll go into much detail about this city. And these two chapters take time out in the book of Revelation, if you will, and they just dwell on that one subject of this city. And it's important to God to record this for us, that we understand some things about what's going on in our world. And these two chapters will describe all of that for us. REVELATION CHAPTER 17, IF YOU WILL. LET'S JUST READ ONE VERSE OF SCRIPTURE TOGETHER BEFORE WE DO GET INTO OUR STUDY. AND I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT THE VERY LAST VERSE, VERSE 18 OF CHAPTER 17. AND THE WORD OF GOD SAYS IT LIKE THIS, AND IT SAYS, AND THE WOMAN WHICH THOU SAWEST IS THAT GREAT CITY WHICH REIGNETH OVER THE KINGS OF THE EARTH. And so that's what we're going to be looking at. That's the subject of this study tonight. And so let's consider this chapter together. An amazing thought is revealed in the Word of God, and it is this, that God has a favorite and chosen city on this earth. JERUSALEM IS THE CITY THE LORD HAS CLAIMED AS HIS OWN. I WANT TO READ SOME VERSES TO YOU THAT SUPPORT THIS THOUGHT. IN FIRST KINGS, CHAPTER 11, IN VERSE 32, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS THIS, BUT HE SHALL HAVE ONE TRIBE FOR MY SERVANT DAVID'S SAKE AND FOR JERUSALEM'S SAKE, THE CITY WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN OUT OF ALL THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL." SO JERUSALEM IS GOD'S CHOSEN CITY. IN SECOND KINGS, CHAPTER 21 AND VERSE NUMBER 4, WE READ THESE WORDS AND IT SAYS, AND HE BUILT ALTARS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, OF WHICH THE LORD SAID, IN JERUSALEM WILL I PUT MY NAME. So God has chosen Jerusalem as the city in which God Himself places His name. Then in Isaiah chapter 31, in verse number 5, it says, So will the Lord of Hosts defend Jerusalem. Defending also, He will deliver it, and passing over, He will preserve it. Then Jeremiah chapter 3, verse 17, At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered unto it to the name of the Lord, JERUSALEM. AND THEN ONE PASSAGE OUT OF THE BOOK OF MATTHEW, THE NEW TESTAMENT, CHAPTER 5 AND VERSE 35, JESUS CHRIST IS TEACHING ON THE MOUNT OF TEACHING, AND HE'S TEACHING HIS CONGREGATIONS SOME PRINCIPLES ABOUT HIS KINGDOM. AND THEN HE SAYS THIS, NOR BY THE EARTH FOR IT IS HIS FOOTSTOOL, NEITHER BY JERUSALEM, FOR IT, JERUSALEM, IS THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING, A REFERENCE TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. SO ALL THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD, OLD TESTAMENT, NEW TESTAMENT, IT BEARS THIS ONE TRUTH OUT THAT JERUSALEM IS THE CHOSEN, PRESERVED, DEFENDED CITY OF GOD ON THIS EARTH. We have already discovered throughout the study of this book of Revelation that the devil is a great imitator of God. He is an actor, if you will, and deceives people through his subtlety and impersonation of the Lord. In his original fall, the motive of his heart is recorded for us. In Isaiah chapter 14, verses 12 through 14, we read these words, How art thou fallen from heaven? Now, the Word of God is recorded for us what Satan said in his heart when he fell from the good grace of God in the very beginning. He said, for thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt, listen to it, Satan talking now. He said, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation in the side of the north I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. Listen to it. I will be like the Most High. The devil uses every means deceiving people to convince them that he is offering them something good and godly. whether it be in the religious realm or the political world or even the economic system. The devil has his counterfeit organization working overtime to represent him. Since God has chosen Jerusalem as His favored city, the devil also has a city on this earth that represents him and his agenda. That is what Revelation chapter 17 and 18 reveal. Following the chronology of the book of Revelation, this city will be judged after the seven vows have been poured out upon the earth. Rod Mattoon writes in his book, The Treasures from Revelation, He said chapter 17 and 18 of Revelation are inserted into the chronological flow of Revelation. The pouring out of the seventh bowl is followed by the return of the Lord at Armageddon. God takes a moment in Revelation chapter 17 and 18 to give us a glimpse of what is being judged. The details of the destruction of Babylon. ARE REVEALED IN THESE TWO CHAPTERS AS THE LORD ELABORATES ON REVELATION CHAPTER 16 AND VERSE 19. AND IF YOU LOOK BACK IN YOUR BIBLE, JUST ONE CHAPTER, IN CHAPTER 16 AND VERSE 19, WE READ THESE WORDS AT THE BLOWING OF THE SEVENTH, OR NOT THE BLOWING, BUT THE POURING OUT OF THE SEVENTH VOW UPON THE EARTH. It said these words, and the great city was divided into three parts. This is speaking of Babylon. And the cities of the nations fell, and great Babylon came in remembrance before God to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. The next two chapters, Revelation 17 and 18, reveal the original beauty and the beast. Let's consider the first six verses of Revelation 17 and look at the beauty revealed. It said this in the word of God, and there came one of the seven angels, which had the seven vows, and talked with me, saying unto me, come hither, and I will show unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication. And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. John sees an amazing sight which causes him to wonder, he says, with great admiration. He sees a woman riding upon a scarlet-colored beast, and the woman is wearing clothing of purple and scarlet. She is decked or covered with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She also has in her hand a golden cup that is full of abominations. This woman is defined for us in the very last verse of this chapter, and we opened up with it tonight, chapter 17, in verse number 18, where it says this, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. The woman is described as sitting upon three things in this chapter. The word sitteth means to dwell among or to remain with forever. She is pictured as sitting upon number one, many waters in verse number one. Number two, she is pictured as sitting upon a scarlet colored beast in verse number three. But then in verse number 9, she is seen, number 3, as sitting upon seven mountains. The waters that she sits upon are interpreted for us in verse number 15, where the Word of God says this, And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. The woman has a name written upon her forehead, Mystery Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. Lastly, John sees the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus Christ. So this woman is a great city that sets upon seven mountains. She reigns over the kings of the earth. She also is worldwide in that she dwells among every tongue, every nation, and multitudes of people. She uses wine as her means of fornication and is guilty of murdering God's people. She is called Mystery Babylon. Any search will reveal that there is one city throughout history that has claimed the title of the City of Seven Hills, and that city is the city of Rome. Rome, the capital of Italy, has always boasted this claim, and since then there have been other cities which have been established copying Rome's structured build. Rome is built on seven literal hills, and they are named in any encyclopedia. But does Rome rule over the kings of the earth? Rome may not play a significant role in the governing of nations, but she certainly is the main influence in the governing of religions around the world. Vatican City, located in Rome, is the world's smallest country. Vatican City is governed as an absolute monarchy, with the Pope as its head. The Vatican mints its own euros, prints its own stamps, issues passports and license plates, operates media outlets, and has its own flag and anthem. The Catholic Church, is not a political organization, but the Pope is one of the few international figures who has a global platform from which to communicate his message. The Pope's position makes him a moral authority in global politics and an important participant in the dialogue over the role of religion in international relations. The Vatican is the head of the largest and most centralized religious organization in the world, the Catholic Church. It is also a sovereign state with diplomatic representatives across the globe. The Vatican, as a religious authority, often challenges secular authorities in areas of international economics, human rights, and security. The word Catholic means universal, and the Catholic Church is universally accepted as the main form of Christianity. Just recently, Pope Francis met with the Muslim leaders claiming that Christians and Muslims to be brothers. He claimed that the message of Christianity and the message of Islam are one message promoting peace throughout the earth. The teachings of the Catholic Church are not Christian doctrine. They worship idols, which is forbidden in the Bible. They teach that Mary is a mediatrix between God and man, and that Mary supersedes Jesus, which is blasphemy. They teach the doctrine of purgatory, which is unscriptural. They believe the priest has the power during the observance of mass to turn the wine and the wafer into the literal body and blood of Jesus Christ, a doctrine called transubstantiation. They teach when some loved one dies, They can be prayed for and released out of purgatory and then enter heaven. Remember, Satan is the great imitator of Christ. As we will later learn in the book of Revelation, the church is called the bride and wife of the Lord Jesus Christ in Revelation chapter 19, 7 through 9. This woman of Revelation 17 is the church's counterfeit representative of Satan on this earth. It is called a mystery, and yet it is revealed plainly in God's Word. This is a mystery form of the Babylonian religion of old found in Genesis 11 at the Tower of Babel. The worshipers of that day under the leadership of Nimrod built a city, and they wanted to make a name for themselves by building a tower whose top would reach unto heaven. During the Tribulation, under the one-world religion of Catholicism, the Antichrist will control his converts by threatening the murder of subjects who will not bow to his worship nor his religion. Verses 7 through 13. Let's read those together and consider the beast reigning. In verses 7 through 13, we read these words. And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carryeth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. the beast that thou sawest was and is not and shall ascend out of the voluntous pit and go into perdition and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world when they behold the beast that was and is not and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom." He's trying to teach us something now. The Word of God is being explicit and trying to teach us something. Here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings. Five are fallen. One is, and the other is not yet come. And when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was and is not, even he is the eighth and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. and the ten horns, which shall soster ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet, but receive power as kings, one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. This beast has been seen before in Revelation chapter 13. In Revelation 13, one, you remember the word of God said this, and I stood upon the sand of the sea, John writing, and I saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and 10 horns, and upon his horns 10 crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. This time, the beast is described as being scarlet-colored, matching the attire of the woman who sits upon him. This shows how the Antichrist will influence and deceive people at the outset of the tribulation. He will support or carry the Catholic Church as a means to make a treaty with Israel and advance his power over the nations and become established as a world ruler and person of religion. Remember, all the saved people are gone at the beginning of the tribulation, and it will be easy to insert the power of the Vatican over the rulers of the world, seeking peace and safety. In every facet of life, homosexuality, such as homosexuality, abortion, birth control, the family being comprised of man and woman, et cetera, the Pope has a standing voice among millions Also, in every issue concerning the nations, the Pope has a powerful voice in what should be done to promote peace among every world leader and nation. So the Antichrist, realizing this power, and that is his supreme motive, will use this position as a manipulative office to secure the allegiance of all. The language of verse 8, which says, The beast that thou sawest was, and is not, and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, is almost like the words used to describe Jesus Christ in Revelation chapter number 1. In Revelation 1, verses 17 and 18, we read these words. And when I saw him, John, writing, he said, when I saw him referencing Jesus Christ, he said, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me and saying unto me, fear not, listen to it. For I am the first and the last. I'm he that liveth and was dead. And behold, I'm alive forevermore. Amen. And have the keys of death and of hell. The Antichrist will likely counterfeit the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Revelation chapter 13, the beast is said to have a deadly wound and it was healed. What a way to control and confound the world with a world leader who is back from the dead. what supernatural power he will seem to have, but it will be a satanic power in full throttle. The thought of the rich man while in the underworld of hell was this, if one went unto them from the dead, they'll repent, Luke 16 verse 30, and they will believe. They will believe. but it will be a belief founded upon the master deceiver of all times, the son of perdition, the man of sin, the Antichrist." Isaiah wrote about this delusion centuries ago in Isaiah chapter 66, verse 3 and 4. And these are the words of God, and I want you to listen closely to what God said. He said, They, speaking about the people, yea, they have chosen their own ways. Are we not living in those days today? It's the days of the judges where every man's doing that which is right in his own eyes. They have no king over them, no king over them. And that's exactly where we're living today. And God says, yea, they have chosen their own ways. And they're so delighted in their abominations. Why sinners today, what used to be hidden, what used to be done behind closed doors, they're out in the streets promoting it and bragging about it and having celebrations over their sinful ways today. God said, yea, they have chosen their own ways and their soul delighteth in their abominations. Listen to it, God speaking. He said, I also will choose their delusions and will bring their fears upon them because this is why God's gonna do this. He said, when I called, none did answer. He said, When I spake, they did not hear, but they did evil before mine eyes. They're doing evil in the eyes of God, and they could care less. But they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. So God is going to send them a strong delusion. during this tribulation time. The ten horns that the beast has are ten kings, which have no power now, but receive power as kings one hour with the beast during the tribulation. These czars will fully support the Antichrist and His wish will be their command. We read it in verse 13. These have one mind and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. Now, verses 14 through 18, the last verses of chapter 17, we want to consider the betrayal and the retribution. Revelation chapter 17, 14 says it like this. These shall make war," talking about these 10 men, these 10 people who has power as kings, These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them. Oh, I love the book of Revelation. Oh, I love the victory that we read about in the book of Revelation. And these shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them. For He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and they that are with Him are called and chosen and faithful. And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest where the whore sitteth are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate, and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill His will, and to agree and to give their kingdom unto the beast until the words of God shall be fulfilled. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth. During the tribulation, Once the Antichrist has gained world domination, the need for the religion of the world will end. Satan is not an atheist. You do understand that Satan knows that there is a God. He is not an atheist. He knows there is a God. That is why he fights so hard to deceive and convince people to follow him. His ultimate goal is the worship of himself. He offered Jesus Christ the kingdoms of the world. If Jesus would only bow and worship him, in Matthew chapter 4, verses 8 through 10, Satan wants the God of heaven. Think about it. Satan wants the God who created him. Satan wants God to worship him. That is how twisted And that is how evil the heart of Satan is. In his heart, he will have no one worshipped other than himself. These 10 kings, along with the beast, shall hate the woman and shall turn on her to destroy her. Remember, the woman is a city, a city that sits on seven hills. And they're gonna turn on that city to destroy her. The Antichrist and his 10 stooges will turn on the city which gave him his religious power. They will completely strip her of her power and then set the city ablaze with fire. This woman has been likened unto the antitype of the church, the bride of Christ. She has been called the bride of Satan. As Jesus has his true church, Satan has his false church. He schemes to deceive, utilizing religion to corrupt the truth into a lie. Satan is religious. He desires worship. He has never refrained from stooping to the depths of depravity and deception to damn one's soul to the pits of hell. He will compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when He is made, He is twofold more the child of hell. Outwardly, He will appear righteous unto men, but within, He is full of hypocrisy and iniquity. These marks are the marks of the son of Satan, the Antichrist, who will be used of Satan to gain the worship and admiration of the tribulation citizens. All of this does not suddenly happen during the tribulation. The mystery of iniquity is already at work, 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 7. Satan has his preachers working overtime right now to deceive and gain a worldwide following using religion as their cloak of deception. In 2 Corinthians 11, verses 13 through 15, we read these words, For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing, listen to it, if his ministers, Satan's ministers, also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to the works. 2 Peter chapter 2, verses 1 through 3, we read these words, But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you. who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. and through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you, whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not." Verse 17 of our text shows how God is still in control. Little does the woman know that the very one she is riding is going to turn on her to completely destroy her, and it will be the fulfillment of the will of God. That is why the book of Revelation is so important for us to study and understand. God is and always will be God. No one nor anything shall ever remove God from His throne. Neither will any other throne replace God and His throne. According to our Bible, that is how this entire scheme of things began. Satan wanted to use up his authority and his throne above God's. And we know from the book of Revelation that that will never happen. During these days of uncertainties and questions abounding, it is a wonderful revelation to know that God is in control. That truth will manifest itself more and more as we see and experience the will of God being accomplished in our world. Sister Judy, you come to the piano. Revelation chapter 17. Oh, what a wonderful study. What an enlightening revelation this is to understand things from the Word of God that are happening even in our time right now. Listen, I've been preaching to you now over this means of Internet I've been preaching to you and telling you my heart about this. I desire more than anything for God to open up the doors of the internet to reach hearts and lives of people who have never even heard of the name of Jesus Christ. And I believe that our God is able to do that. I believe God is interested in doing that. If you're listening tonight or maybe in the near future, you're going to be listening to this message. I beg you in Jesus' name. Please trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. There is no other way, there is no other religion, there is no other name given among men under heaven whereby men must be saved than the lovely name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I beg you. to trust Jesus, even right now. Don't wait, don't wait, don't wait. Let me tell you, let me tell you the gospel story. Jesus Christ so loved you that he came to this world of sin and sorrow, experienced everything that you've ever faced in life. He's tempted in all points like as we are yet without sin. and he went to an old rugged cross and died for your sins. He took your place on that cross. He took your punishment on that cross and he died. They took that body off of the cross and laid it in a cold, damp ground and it laid there for three days. But him being who he is, God, manifest in the flesh, got up the third day and walked out of that grave, conquered death, hell, and the grave, and He did that for us. We needed a Redeemer. We needed a Savior. You need a Redeemer. You need a Savior. If you're here today listening to the sound of my voice, I beg you to get on your knees and call upon that lovely name of Jesus. He will not turn you away. He will not turn his back on you. He'll save your soul and give you eternal life. if you'll simply repent and call on His name. Oh, what a wonderful Savior Jesus is. And church, I've been telling you this all this time. We're living on the threshold of Jesus coming back for His church. Oh, I'm so thankful to be a part of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. I don't deserve to be a part, but I'm in by grace. I realized I was a sinner one day and called upon his name. And he saved this old sinner and gave me the title of son of God. And I stand before you tonight by grace. I preach to you tonight by grace. And church, we better be telling others this wonderful story about Jesus Christ. The only way for anybody to be saved through Jesus Christ. I thank you for listening tonight. Remember, I meant to mention this to you. I did a little Facebook post yesterday and told the church about this, and maybe you've not seen it, but this coming Sunday is Mother's Day, and every Mother's Day and Father's Day, we always do a little something different here. We have morning service, but we don't have evening service. And in keeping with our policy, this coming Sunday, we'll have Sunday school at 945 and then morning service at 11. But we will not be broadcasting a service this coming Sunday. I've had some tell me that they want to do some things with their mother, and even though they've still got the social distance and all that, but they've got something planned. And I completely understand that and honor that. If your mother's still living, be with your mom, call your mom, be with her, do anything you can this Sunday just to honor her. And listen, I do wanna mention this. This Sunday, being Mother's Day, we're not gonna be able to properly honor mothers other than just mention it. But whenever we do get to meeting together in this place God's given us, We'll have a special service and we'll honor those moms. Any of the special services that we have to give into right now, we'll make those up whenever we get to meeting in Jesus' name again. I love you and I thank you for being a part of this service tonight. Share this, tell others about it, get them to watch this service, and let's make sure we do our part to be the witnesses God has called us to be. Thank you for tuning in tonight. God bless you.
