Well, good morning. Beautiful day, huh? All right. If you think about today, you might pray for Douglas. He was here yesterday, and before he left, well, he's had this kind of ongoing problem with bloody noses and stuff, and thought he had that stopped. Well, it did before he went home. But in the middle of the night, it started in again. Last I heard, he was heading for the ER. His neighbor was gonna take him, so might be pray for him. All right, let's open word of prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank you for a beautiful day you've given us. Thank you for safety, for Brad and Marcel being able to come down from camp to share the ministry with us today. We do pray for Douglas, pray that you give the doctors wisdom as they look at him, if there's something that they could do to help him out today, or if there's procedures he needs to take care of in the days soon ahead, we pray that you'd help that to get lined up as well. We just commit this day to you, pray that we might bring glory to you through all that's said and done in Jesus' name, amen. All right, so be sure to look over the board out there, probably some materials that you could pick up, take home. And I think they're probably bribing you to get there with some candy in the dish. I found that out the hard way one time. They had a presentation where pastors could come in and try to recruit people at Maranatha to come to their church. And the first time there, I had the little slide presentation stuff. These other guys come rolling in and they've got cookies and cupcakes and everything. So that's where all the kids went is where all the food was at. Oh man. So anyway, but we are glad to have Brad and Marcella with us here today. And the rest of us might be yawning, but they probably are the ones that should be. It was a rubber legs rendezvous. They were riding loops at camp and some of it in the rain. And yet we're able to get a little bit of rest and drive all the way down here this morning. but we're looking forward to hearing from them. We count them as our missionaries. It is a mission outreach, and men and women, boys and girls, come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through camp ministries. And just for curiosity, how many of you, I don't want, maybe I shouldn't be asking this, because it may be stuff you want to, how many of you went to camp as a young person? OK, quite a few of you. All right. Those are memorable days. How much candy and pop can you drink in a week, right? Until your money runs out, right? OK, I'll quit talking and let Brad, I don't know if you guys are doing a team thing here. Last week it was Brad, so Marcel, you got to do it this week, right? You come and share with us. Yes, thank you, Pastor John. It is great to be with you folks. I think we were here, was it two years ago, I think our last time? Probably two years ago, so it's good to be back. And it's good to see familiar faces and new faces. That's always a good thing. And I'm going to make the assumption that you will be in the morning service, most of you. And Pastor John has asked me to share a lot about the ministry of Camp Fairwood during that service. And then a brief message from God's Word. So for this Sunday school hour, I'd like to do a lesson in Hebrews chapter 11. Okay, Hebrews chapter 11. So if you would turn there. And we will look at some very amazing verses from God's Word, as they all are. But we were seven and a half years at Community Baptist Church, about 45 minutes south of here, in Silver Lake. Anyone ever heard of Silver Lake, Wisconsin? Okay, right here, a few. Yes. And we were there for about seven and a half years with Pastor David Hendrickson, a tremendous man of God whom I learned under and whom I greatly respect. Now he's with the Lord now, but he was 18 years as a missionary in Laos. And then the country went communist and kicked all the missionaries out. And so they had to leave and came to the States and was pastoring, pastored for many, many years at Community Baptist Church. And that's where I came from. So home for me is Southern Wisconsin. And at least we had, oh boy, three of our children at Burlington Memorial Hospital, three of our five. And so that's not too far from here. But the Lord called us to Camp Fairwood back in 1995. So we've been there 29 years. This is our 30th summer at Camp Fairwood. So we've been there a long time, had two more children or one more child at camp. And yeah, so it's been a tremendous, tremendous ministry adventure. It's been really an opportunity of a lifetime to serve Christ at camp and in the ministry at Silver Lake. We'll share a video during the morning worship service, and I think, hopefully, we'll be able to, you think? Okay, good, good. That'd be great. And then share more about that ministry. You're in Hebrews 11, and our salvation is by faith through grace, the grace of God. Not of works, lest you and I should what? Yeah, boast. And does someone know where that passage is? You should know, right? Yeah, there you go. Ephesians 2, 8 and 9. Isn't it amazing that Christ would lead us by faith to himself, to trust in him as Savior, which secures our eternal destiny forever? Forever. And it's by faith, and it's a calling of God. And yet, we struggle to walk by faith in our daily life. That's always been a puzzle to me. How we can commit our soul for all of eternity to God by faith, and yet struggle with the daily incidentals in comparison to eternal life. You and I are to walk by how? By faith. In fact, in Hebrews 11, verse 6, it says, without faith, it is impossible to please God. It's impossible. God wants us to trust him and to believe him and to take him at his word. And so, We cannot please God unless it's by faith. In fact, it says in Hebrews 11.5, Enoch was taken up so that he should not taste death. He was not found because God took him up, because he obtained the witness that before being taken up, he was pleasing to God. That's Enoch. Wouldn't that be something, to be so pleasing to God by a life of faith, like Enoch, where you walk with God and all of a sudden you're gone and God takes you up to be with him. There's no death that occurs. There's no rapture that takes place. It's just, I want you with me and he takes you up and you're gone. Wouldn't that be cool? I think Enoch had a special place in life where he was not for God took him. And he had the testimony that he walked by faith and God Took him up because he was pleasing to him. Oh, wouldn't that be cool? Oh, I would love that. Well, let me challenge our thinking. Death can be like that. In fact, death is a good thing. Let me say this. Death is not bad. It's the result of the fall. It's a consequence. But you know what? Death is a good thing. To be absent from the body is to be present. with the Lord. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of one of his saints." So I look at death differently. Differently, of course, than the world philosophy. But, honestly, so many believers fall into wrong thinking about death. But if we have faith and we are pleasing to God, let's just go to be with him. Now, in fact, the older I get, I'm thinking, you know, if I don't wake up tomorrow, that would be all right. Not that I don't like life. I love life. I really do. I love life. Every day the Lord gives me, I want to love it, and I want to love him and enjoy him. But you know what? Death is better. So I read a poem where at a funeral, do not weep for me. I'm weeping for you, those of you still left on this earth. Don't weep for me. I'm with the Lord Jesus. I'm in heaven. And that's to be, Paul says, far greater than on earth. But living by faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. We walk by faith and not by sight. That's right. That's in 2 Corinthians 5.7. Well, this morning, I would like to share five characteristics of a life of faith. And a lot of these are taken from Hebrews, but there are also many other passages in the New Testament and even in the Old Testament. But there are five characteristics of a life of faith that should be a part of our life as believers in Jesus. Now, I am making an assumption here that you have placed your faith in Jesus alone for eternal life. and that you've said, he's my Savior, he's my Lord, he's my everything, and I'm going to live for him. And that being said, how can we walk by faith? Five characteristics of a life of faith. Number one, faith steps out in obedience. It steps out in obedience. When God says, do this, guess what we get to do? We get to do His will. We get to follow His commands. It's against our feelings. It's not that we have to. It's that we get to. We want to. In fact, do you realize that when we trust in Christ as our Savior, God doesn't want it to be a religion to us, like, oh, I've got to go to church. Oh, I've got to read my Bible. Oh, I've got to spend time talking to him so I can check the box on my thing. We get to. It's a relationship of faith. Now, the world will not understand this. In fact, it's foolishness to them. It's like, you're what? You're living by faith? Well, yeah, we live by faith all the time. So we might as well walk by faith with our Savior, with our Creator, with our Lord. And when God says, do this, we do it. I think back to Noah. Noah was asked by God to build an ark, which he did for, I think it was 120 years. A hundred and twenty years. Well, you say, well, people lived a long time back then. Yes, they did. But a hundred and twenty years is still a long time. And God said, Noah, build an ark. And Noah was thinking, well, what's an ark? Well, it's a big boat, and you and your family and all those that are willing to come in will be saved from the rain that I'm going to send. Wait a minute. What? It's going to what? Yeah, this water is going to fall from the sky. And Noah had no concept. We were riding our bikes yesterday in the Rubber Legs Rendezvous, and it's raining. And it's hitting us in the face, and honestly, it was kind of fun. I didn't mind it. But it never rained during the days of Noah. So God says, yeah, I'm going to bring water from above, and I'm going to send water upheavals from the earth from below, and it's going to flood the earth. And Noah's scratching his head saying, it's going to what? Yeah, and this big structure that you're building, it's going to float. What? And for a hundred and twenty years, he built a boat, not having experienced rain or flooding or any thought that the world would be destroyed and drowned by water." My friends, that's faith. That's faith. That's a hard ask from the Father. But he did it by faith. And they entered the Ark, and, of course, you know the story. The Scripture says that Moses stepped out into the water as though it were dry ground. And what did the Lord do? He parted the waters. But he had to step. Are there areas in your life right now you're just not certain about? And how can we? We're not omniscient. But there's uncertainty in our life. And you're thinking, how is this going to come out? How is this going to play out? How is this going to come together? My friends, trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding, but rather, in all your ways, acknowledge him. And what does he promise to do? He promises to direct your paths. Or some translations in Proverbs 3, 5, and 6 says, he will make your paths smooth, straight. That's trust. That's faith. Faith steps out in obedience. I think of Peter. Peter was fishing all night, and Jesus told him to let down his nets again. And I'm sure he thought, OK. He didn't even know that it was the Lord, because it was after the crucifixion, and the Lord was on the shore. And Jesus on the shore yells out to them and says, hey, have you caught anything yet? No, we've been fishing all night, and we got skunked. Well, put your nets on the other side of the boat. And you could almost hear their thinking. We're tired. We're hungry. We've not caught anything all night long. Nevertheless, we'll do it." So they throw it over the other side of the boat, and the Lord brings the increase, so much so that they could hardly get the nets ashore or on the boat. And then they knew it was the Lord. That's by faith. Peter walked by faith. He walked by faith that he walked on water. Until he was overcome with doubt and took his eyes off of the Lord, and then what happened? He sunk. So faith steps out in obedience. I have an area right now, and I'll be real up front with you, an area of faith right now in my life is a head cook. Our head cook is leaving in two and a half weeks, and we don't have a lead on a head cook. for the summer or for the future. We've been diligent to pray. We've been diligent to look. We've contacted many colleges, dozens and dozens and dozens of churches, and I'm waiting on the Lord. I don't know how it's going to come together. Our theme this summer is on prayer. Now I wish we would have had a theme on fasting. Well, camp is known for the great food that we serve, and we do. We have great food. We spent over $110,000 on food last year. That's amazing. And food is a big deal for campers. I don't know how the Lord's going to work it out, but I'm trusting him. I mean, I'm working too, but I'm trusting him. And there's areas in your life where you don't know how things are going to come together. Trust the Lord. His plan will come together. He does not fail. He will accomplish His good purposes. He is our good Father. His sovereign will is perfect. So do I have a plan B and a plan C? No, I don't. It's kind of like you're there on the brink of the Red Sea, and the Egyptian army is following, coming on, on, and you hear the hoofbeats, and you hear the chariot wheels, and you hear the war cries, and you're thinking, we're hemmed in! We're going to drown! We're going to die! And then Moses steps into the water. He steps into the water as though it were dry ground, and God does a miracle. Well, God wants to do that today. Not in the sense of parting the waters, but yes, in a sense, he does. That way, he can only get the glory. So faith steps out in obedience. It's being a doer of the Word, not just a hearer of the Word. Number two, if you're taking notes, that was point number one, five characteristics of faith. Faith steps out in obedience. Number two, and by the way, are we supposed to be done by what time? 10? Is it usually 10? And then morning worship starts at 10.15 or 10.30? Okay. Number two, faith sees opportunities, not obstacles. In those examples that I just gave from the Old Testament and the New Testament, a person that has a life of faith sees opportunities and not obstacles. So they're obstacles at first sight. But when God is at work, he takes the obstacles and he turns them into opportunities. So let's look at things through God's lenses. I think of Sarah. Sarah, who was 90 years old, and an angel appears to her and says, you're going to have a baby. What? No, wait a minute. That is not scientifically possible. Biologically, that's not possible. Well, unless God is in it. And with God, all things are what? Possible. That's right. So Sarah, at first she laughed. At first she doubted. And in fact, she lied, didn't she? She said, oh, I didn't laugh, and the angel rebuked her and said, oh, you did laugh. Yes, you did laugh. You laughed in disobedience, in doubt. No. Then she said, I believe. I trust you. Even though the obstacles are there, I will take advantage of this opportunity." David didn't see Goliath as an obstacle. He saw Goliath as an opportunity. In fact, he saw that Goliath was taunting and blaspheming the living God. "'How dare you!' David said. I love his big picture here. I love his big picture. He didn't see Goliath as an obstacle. He saw it. No, God's at work here. God has an opportunity here. So I would rather attempt to do something great for God and fail than attempt to do nothing and succeed. So friends, in your life, when there's obstacles and there's barriers and you're hitting roadblock and wall after wall, Just remember, and I'm preaching to me now, God is at work. God is at work. I think back on when my dad was real sick, and my mom later got sick, and both are with the Lord now. But it was a faith walk for me. I just had to say, OK, Lord, I'll trust you. I'm going to trust you. So we see opportunities, not obstacles. Number three. Here's the life of faith. Another characteristic is faith triumphs in adversity. Faith will triumph in adversity. In the New Testament, 1 John says it this way, for whoever is born of God overcomes the world, and this is the victory that has overcome our world, that is our faith. So do you see a person that is overwhelmed by the world and they're sucked down the world tube and they just abandon God? That's a lack of faith. They have given way to a lack of faith. They have allowed adversity and influence of this world, the external pressures to overcome them, and they have thrown away their faith. The scripture says, be strong in the Lord and in his might. Walk by faith, not by sight. Again, Noah, scorned for 120 years, built an ark. He triumphed in that adversity. He was scorned, he was laughed at, he was ridiculed. But in face of it, he built an ark. David, scorned by the Philistine armies, by Goliath himself. A little pipsqueak of a boy, I'm going to cut your head off. Well, no, David cut Goliath's head off. Basically, he said, go home, shepherd boy. Job, though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. That's the life of faith. Faith overcomes adversity. By faith, we overcome the world. By faith, we overcome the inner propensity to sin and yield to the flesh. We will overcome. John said it this way, they went out from us because they were not of us. If they would have been with us or one of us, they would have no doubt continued with us. But they went out that it might be made known that they were not really of us. In other words, there's a big question mark over their faith. Did they really have a true, genuine faith? Because faith triumphs in adversity. Our true character is known. We learn obedience by the things that we suffer. So we suffer and we know how strong our faith really is. There was a guy, The Lord's provided all of our counselors for this summer. Usually I'm still waiting on one or two more guy counselors for the Lord to show, reveal who we should hire. Well, about two weeks ago I hired my last staff person for the summer. We hire about 45 each summer. And I had to choose between two guys. One, both of these guys were walking with the Lord, but one had been tried and tested and the other hadn't. And I watched the one walk by faith, and so I chose him over the other one that wasn't tried and tested, because I didn't know his faith, if that makes sense. They both may have been a good choice, but I chose, okay, this one has been tested and tried, and his faith stood strong in adversity. Number four, faith lives for the future. And when I say future, I mean eternity. Faith doesn't live just for the here and now. I think of Abraham. Abraham, in Hebrews 11, verse... 9 says, "'By faith Abraham lived as an alien in a land of promise, as in a foreign land dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, following heirs of the same promise. For he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.'" That's a by faith statement. That's a by faith kind of living. But it goes on. By faith, even Sarah herself received ability to conceive even beyond the proper time of her life, since she considered him faithful who was promised. Therefore also, there was born of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of the heavens in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore." Verse 13, and all these died in faith without receiving the promises. but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth." For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. And indeed, if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had the opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country that is a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city." I just love that. What forward, eternal thinking. And that's the kind of thinking that you and I are to have as a believer. We're to walk by faith. We're to live for eternity, for the future. So faith lays up treasures in heaven, not on the earth. Because on the earth, what happens to our treasure? Three things. You can't take it with you. Rust destroys it. It's called the second law of thermodynamics. Everything is running down. It's decaying. So all that we amass is going to decay. We have recently discovered on TV, and we don't watch much TV, but a show called Hoarders. Have you ever seen that? Oh, that's scary. I mean, wow. of people that are amassing things thinking they can't get rid of anything because it gives them comfort. Oh, friends. Now, we're moving in a week, just 300 yards over. And we have downsized a lot. And we're moving from a 3,000 square foot home, five bedroom, four bath, to an 1,800 square foot home with three baths, and we're downsizing. But they say three moves are as good as a fire. Well, I don't know. We've been downsizing for a year, just getting rid of stuff. Because we don't want to take it with us to the 300 yards over. We don't want to take it with us. And we won't be at camp more than several years. So when we move again, we want to move light. Well, think of that spiritually. Friends, you and I cannot take our stuff with us. We live for the future. But we can invest. in eternal things and he promises to reward us. Really? Yes! By faith! So you and I can enjoy the rewards of heaven even now by faith. That's a life of faith. So that means we can serve in the church, we can give financially, we can pray to our Father in heaven, we can Encourage our neighbors. We can witness for Christ. We can share the gospel with that person in the store. And God says, that's investments in heaven. And you're laying up treasures on heaven that rust can never corrupt, where thieves can never break in and steal. What's the third one? Where moth—there we go—where moth can eat it. I remember my grandparents had these things called mothballs. Oh, my word, those are terrible. And I remember smelling that as a kid, thinking, my grandparents smell funny. And, you know, so it gets rid of the mothballs, okay? But you smell funny. But I just thought, wow, that's interesting. will corrupt everything of our clothes. Eventually it'll rot. The moths will eat it. So faith lives for the future. Our hope is in our Lord. It's in the future. It's not in anything on this earth. Sometimes you can listen to the radio or see the news on the computer or on TV, and you can just throw your hands up and say, oh, it's terrible, awful. And it is. But you know what? Our hope is in the Lord. If you're discouraged because you listen to the news, you might want to quit listening to the news. But find your hope in the Savior. Find your hope in the good news of the gospel. OK, number five. Faith accomplishes the extraordinary. Faith doesn't settle for mediocre. It says, I will seek to accomplish all that God wants me to accomplish. It's not low living. It's living where God wants us to live. It is experiencing the abundant life. It is spending our life in such a worthy cause that we're doomed to fail unless God is in it. So make your life count by investing it in things that God can do. And, friends, living by faith is truly exciting. It really is. I don't know how things are going to work out in my life, and I don't know how they're going to work out in your life, but you know what? This is a by faith thing. We have some boys that do not know Jesus as their Savior. That's crushing to me, because we raised them to love Jesus, and all of them have made a profession of faith in Christ. But I don't see a possession there in some. And I could just be overwhelmed with that. But you know what? A life of faith says, no, God, you can do the extraordinary. You can do what I can't. In fact, salvation is of the Lord, is it not? It's not dependent on me or you. And so we walk by faith and say, God, you are working your good plan. I will trust you. We may not always be like a David, or a Joseph, or a Moses, or a Ruth, or a Sarah, or an Abraham, or an Enoch. But God wants to accomplish great things in and through us by faith. Trust Him. Seek to do what only God could do. Otherwise, if you do it in the flesh, you will fail. So trust the Lord to use you. I don't want to stand before the Lord and say, boy, if you just would have trusted me more. No, I want to walk a life of faith in our Lord. So faith, let's review. Faith steps out in obedience. Faith sees opportunities, not obstacles. Faith triumphs in adversity. Faith lives for the future. And then faith accomplishes the extraordinary according to the will of God. If these five characteristics will mark your life and my life, I think not only will God be honored and glorified, but those around us will take notice. Our children know we live by faith. And I think from time to time, boy, if I were to throw away my faith and my trust in my father, what would that do to a child that doesn't walk with God now? I don't want to give them any excuse of turning away or continuing away from the Lord. So we walk by faith. All right, we've got a few minutes here. Any thoughts here that you have from these passages, this message? Any thoughts? Any helpful comments? And maybe personal struggles in how God has encouraged you to live a life of faith. I'm not alone for the Father is with me. Yes, amen. Amen. I had to sing on the way to church today because I needed help. I had a bad attitude and a long heart. Yes. That's right. Praise the Lord for that. Good. Yes. Can you elaborate, if possible, on what leads to the last point we were talking about? I think you do what only God can do. So in other words, when you set a goal for yourself, maybe it has to be Yeah, faith accomplishes the extraordinary. I think of men and women in Scripture, and then I'll make it personal to us, like David, who sought out to slay Goliath. Well, that faith says, yeah, I could die in the process. I mean, God could allow that to happen. As David ran towards Goliath with the sling, and he picks up the stones, You know, Goliath could have charged David and just killed him. And that could have been the will of God. It wasn't. God has another plan. But David sought to do something so outside of himself, supernatural, that David was gonna fail unless God intervened. So that's an Old Testament example. I think of Peter as a New Testament example. To walk on water? I mean, Jesus says, come on, Peter. Well, Peter could've dove into the water. But he steps out of the boat, over the boat side, and he walks on water. Okay, so, Overcoming those barriers, what are some barriers that you and I might face in our life where we say, no, in spite of the barriers, I'm going to live my faith? Give me some real life examples here. Yes, sir. I'm not good at it. I won't know what to say. Lord, I'm trusting you. Show me the way. And He's done that in miraculous ways for me because I was the silent guy. Yes, that's a great example. So we're overcoming the barrier of fear. Oh, what will they think? Or, oh no, I won't know what to say. Or, oh no, I won't share the gospel accurately. Or, I will misquote a scripture. No, no, no, no. Faith says, I'm going to be obedient and share the good news. That's a great example. Give me more. He knows we're gonna fail. Fall six times, get up seven. Yes. And I've learned as a recovering perfectionist, it's okay to fail. It really is okay to fail. Isn't it, Marcel? It's bad when two perfectionists marry each other. Give me another example, though, of stepping out and being obedient even when it's difficult. There's barriers. Yes, sir. You're rebuking a brother or sister that's walking wrong. Yeah. You know, you're afraid to, well, they should know God would teach us to steer them right. Help them to put their eyes on Christ instead of where they're feeling like they're going. Yes, yes. Good one. To put on full armor of God and leave in the morning and to say that Think of areas like finances, you know if you're finding a shortfall in and you just need some more money, not because of greed or just because you want more and more and more, but there's a need there. Trust in the Lord. It's easy to put down plastic, but that's an area where saying, okay, Lord, I am not going to go into debt. We went into debt one time in our marriage for our first car. And should we have done that? I don't know, it's a gray area. But we did go into debt for our first car. And since then, we've said, Lord, we're gonna trust you to not go into debt for anything that's depreciating in value. And God has honored that, and God has blessed that. And I remember a family who desperately needed four tires for their suburban. And we were planning to help them get new tires. And he came in one day into my office. And this is when I was in Silver Lake. And he said, God provided for new tires for my car. And I was like, oh, this has got to be good. I said, that's amazing. Praise the Lord for that. Yes. I put on a credit card. Oh, no. Oh, no. Here our brother in Christ missed an opportunity to get tires for his car by not trusting the Lord. So he had to make payments on his credit card for months and months and months. But that's an example. Will we dare to trust God to live by faith? Now I'm not saying go cancel your insurance policies, you know, because I'm gonna trust over. No, there's some, wisdom in how we do things but Especially with our messed up financial situation, by the way, we know of a couple who says no I'm not I don't believe in insurance. We're gonna trust the Lord and they've taken that stand and Have they had to pay a price for it? Yes, they have a great great price but You know, it's you and I stand and fall before the Lord, right? and we have to be confident that what we choose is right before the Lord. God may ask you to do something that he may never ask me to do. He's never gonna ask me to build a boat like Noah, like Noah's Ark. But he did ask Ken Ham. Okay, any other examples before we close? John Deere, what am I going to do now? Get a lot less money and still got expenses and stuff. Well, I'll just trust you on this one, Lord. And it works. I call him God's man. That's right. A pencil and paper may not look right, but it works. We honor the Lord with our wealth, he promises to bless. All right, any other thoughts before we close? Thank you. You're welcome.
