In difficult days and facing
dire circumstances, it is always good to remind ourselves that
God is greater than all. Scott Pauley is examining the
miracles of Jesus recorded for us in God's Word. Our hope is
that the message in these miracles will become real in your life.
Christ is enough. Let's open our Bibles and join
the study now. Everything that our Lord Jesus
did and everything our Lord Jesus does is unique. He truly is the
unique Christ and he deals uniquely with each individual. We've learned
already in Mark chapter 8 that the Lord meets a variety of needs.
We return today to Mark chapter 8 to a story that is recorded
only by this particular gospel writer. It is the healing of
a blind man in the city of Bethsaida. It's very unique. It's found
in only one place and it is unique for this reason. It's the only
miracle that is completed gradually and almost every other instant
when some particular thing is accomplished, the Lord does it
immediately, completely in a moment of time. This miracle is done
in steps or in stages. And I think there's a great spiritual
lesson in this for us today. Listen to the record in Mark
8, beginning in verse 22. The Bible says of Jesus, And
he cometh to Bethsaida, and they bring a blind man unto him, and
besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by
the hand, and led him out of the town. And when he had spit
on his eyes and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he
saw aught. And he looked up and said, I
see men as trees walking. After that, he put his hands
again upon his eyes and made him look up, and he was restored
and saw every man clearly. And he sent him away to his house,
saying, neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town."
Now, there are some similarities between this particular miracle
and our Lord's healing of a deaf man in another place. But this
is the instance and the only instance where we find the record
of Jesus touching this blind man of Bethsaida and causing
him to see. Let me give you two or three
observations from this particular miracle. First of all, I want
to observe that there's a process. Notice the process of the people
bringing him to Jesus. Then Jesus leads him out of town.
Then Jesus spits and touches his eyes. And then Jesus touches
him yet again to bring about this perfect healing. And I think
there's a reason why there's a process. We know that our Lord
can do anything in a moment of time. Aren't you glad that when
the Lord saves a man, he saves him instantly, he saves him completely,
he saves him eternally? And yet where the Lord works
in our lives, there very often is a process. A process even
that leads up to that moment where there's some spiritual
breakthrough or some definite answer to prayer. Some people
have suggested, maybe this man didn't have enough faith. But
I want to tell you, the process, I don't believe, had anything
to do with the lack of faith in the man, and it certainly didn't
have anything to do with the lack of power in Christ. Instead,
I think there's a great truth in the process, and it is this,
that there are steps as we follow the Lord. There are stages in
life and in God's work in our lives. Could it be that our Lord
was giving this blind man A man who'd been blind all of his life,
time to adjust, adjust to the light. Could it be that our Lord
was doing something even more than the physical, but spiritually
he was working in this man's heart in the process? I have
no idea who's listening to me right now, but I know this. Very often, in all of our lives,
we are in the process. And it's in the process when
we don't know exactly all the Lord is going to do, and we can't
see everything clearly, that Christ is often doing His greatest
work. And maybe you're here hearing me today speak of this miracle,
and you're in that process. You're in the steps. You're in
the stages. And perhaps things are not clear.
Oh, take heart, dear friend. Christ knows exactly what is
good doing. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes
that the Lord makes everything beautiful in his time. Well, I want you to know if you
ask this blind man, he would tell you when the Lord was finished
with him, it was all beautiful. Think of this. The first thing
this man ever saw when his eyes were opened was Jesus. How'd you like to live your whole
life blind and the first thing you ever see is the loveliness
of Jesus Christ? Yes, the Lord is at work in the
process. Then notice not only the process,
but notice the variety. Even in this miracle, there's
a variety of ways that the Lord dealt with him. For example,
the Bible says first, he led him out of town and he spit on
his eyes and put his hands upon him. So that's the first step
in this. And the man looks up, sees men
as trees walking. In other words, he's not seeing
clearly, things are blurry. And so the Lord puts his hand
again upon his eyes. Do you see the variety here?
First, it is his spit, that literally which comes out of Christ. And
then it is his hands. But in each instance, it is the
Lord. Oh, listen to me with your heart
for just a moment. The Lord may be using many means in your life
right now, but it is all God's power. He may be using many channels
to speak to you or minister to you, but it's the same source. Christ, through his sovereign
choice, chose to do it this way. We don't know why. I can't explain
to you why the Lord did what he did with this man or why he's
doing what he's doing in your life. I only know this, that
there's a process and there is a variety in the way the Lord
deals with men, but God is always at work. I think it's interesting
that the Lord Jesus speaks to this man inquiring, it would
seem, about his sight, only to hear the man say, I see men as
trees walking. You see, when the Lord probes,
when he asks questions, he's not looking for information.
He already knows the answer. Instead, I'm convinced that Jesus
was leading this man. We get a picture from the very
first verse of him leading him out of town, but I think he was
doing much more than that. He's not just leading him geographically,
he's leading him spiritually to a place of real victory, of
faith, of watching the Lord at work. And I want you to know
that in the details of life, in the variety of means and in
the process, Christ is at work. And so there's a third thing
we see in the story. There's not only the process and the variety,
praise God, there is the restoration. The Bible says that he puts his
hands again upon his eyes and made him look up and he was restored
and saw every man clearly. Let me just tell you, when Jesus
gets done, it will be perfect. I don't know what he's doing
in your life right now. I don't know what questions you have. I don't know
what it is that's not clear. But when the Lord is finished,
it will be perfect. Do you see the perfect clarity?
All the blurriness of vision is gone. He sees every man clearly. This is the Lord's doing. Here's
the message from the miracle in Mark chapter 8 today. Here's
the great truth from the blind man of Bethsaida. It is this.
Are you ready? Just let Jesus work. I don't know why he's doing what
he's doing in your life or what is going on right now, but I
know this, the Lord is at work. Just let him work. In the process,
through the variety of means, believe that in the end the Lord
will restore. Just let him work. And maybe
you have questions. Maybe there are things that are
not clear at this moment. And maybe you feel like that
blind man. You just see things vaguely right now. But I want
you to know when you get on the other side, you'll see more clearly. You'll see as the Lord Jesus
wants you to. You'll look back and you'll recognize
that in it all, Christ was at work. Yes, Christ is enough. Just let him work. What an encouragement to know
that regardless of the situation, we can trust the Lord Jesus.
