Hello again and welcome to the program. We're here with a little strength for today. We've been talking about how to study the Bible and we're going to talk a little bit today about commentary. Stay tuned. In our recent programs, we talked a little bit about Jude in verse number one, and I gave you some information about him being one of these half-brothers of Jesus. He grew up in the same family that Jesus grew up in with Joseph and Mary. We said the word servant in verse one means bond slave. We gave the definition of the word sanctified, preserved, and called in verse number one. Where do we get that information? Well, I got most of it by digging into several different commentaries that will take you back to the original meaning in the Greek language of each one of those words. I want to focus today on verse number three of Jude. It says, Beloved, when I gave all diligence right unto you with the common salvation, It was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that you should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." Now what I did in studying this verse was I looked at every word in this verse in the commentaries or in the Bible programs that are available, to see what it said in the original. And so he said in verse three, when I gave all diligence, I gave all diligence. Now that word gave is in the past tense. The dictionary says gave is the past tense of the verb give. and it signifies that an action of giving has already occurred. And so I checked these Bible programs and found out that the word gave here is only translated that way in this one verse. 357 times that word has been translated do, which of course is in the present tense. So let's read it that way. Beloved, when I do all diligence to write unto you the common salvation, it was needful for me to write. Now we have again a word that is past tense. The word was. 22 times that word has been translated be. So let's read it that way. Beloved, when I do all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it be needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that you should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Now when I got to the word common I was very shocked because according to the scriptures I've been preaching this verse wrong for a long period of time. The Greek word here for common is kosmos, K-O-I-N-O-S, and has been translated in Mark 7, verse 2, as defiled. It has been translated in Romans 14, 14, unclean, three times in that one verse. And in Hebrews chapter 10 and verse number 28, it has been translated unholy thing. And so it looks like what Jude really said was, Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common, defiled, unclean, unholy plan of salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you and exert you that you should earnestly contend for the faith. Now I have to come to a conclusion. Should I believe the commentaries or should I believe the word of God? Every commentary that I have checked says that Jude changed his mind here. He wanted to write about the common salvation, referring to the actual plan of salvation, but he had to change his mind and write about the apostasy. According to the Word of God, is that really true? So I preached it wrong for a long time. Why did I do that? I did it because I didn't take advantage of Acts 17 11 says about those that receive the word with all readiness of mind and search the scriptures daily whether those things were so. So when you look at a commentary, I should receive it with readiness of mind, but then I should search the scriptures daily whether those things were so. The problem for me was it was easier to take 15 minutes or even 15 seconds and believe what the commentaries say rather than take every single word in that verse and come up with the fact that I was teaching it wrong, the word common, wrong, because I just simply believed the commentaries. So, don't throw your commentaries out. They can be very, very helpful. But, like this program, receive it with all readiness of mind and then search the scriptures daily to see if these things be so. I might be wrong. There's too many good men going too many different directions on the issues of today for me to claim, well, I got it all figured out. No, all we need to do is receive what we get in church, receive the articles that are written by people that know the Lord and are trying to help other people. receive them with readiness of mind, and then search the scriptures daily and see if these things be so. Like I said, that takes a little longer, and that's why Solomon said, much study is weariness of the flesh.
