Proverbs 21-25 says, The desire of the slothful killeth him, for his hands refuse to labor. I've seen men and women like this over the years. I actually first noticed it among several boys and girls during my childhood. But the first time I remember really seeing anything like this was when I watched an Andy Griffith show episode with my parents. I think it was in the late 70s. I saw that episode again recently and it brought back memories because I just remember being amazed that there were even parents like that in the world because I could never dream of getting away with the things that Opie's spoiled brat friend did in that episode. Of course, by the end of the episode, the kid's father grew a spine and started dealing with his spoiled son by taking him out back for a whoopin'. Something you would probably never see on a TV episode today, as far as I know, unless they're painting up the parent as an abuser. But Opie got the message too. It was clear that he saw how ridiculously dumb such behavior was, but he also saw that it could be dangerous. I knew a few teenage boys as I was growing up who really didn't do much of anything in the way of chores at their home. Thankfully, most of them snapped out of it when they became adults and they've turned into, you know, men who work hard in order to provide for their wives and children. But there were a few others who ended up fulfilling this proverb. Their slothfulness got them thrown in prison in a couple of cases and a couple of them killed. The desire of the slothful killeth him, for his hands refuse to labor. And the idea of a man or woman whose hands refuse to labor translates into the spiritual world as well as the workforce and personal lives of men and women. The unsaved man ignores the Spirit of God working on his heart. He ignores the testimony of creation. He ignores the Bible that most Americans have in their homes. He ignores the attempts of Christians to give him gospel tracts and witness to him. But Isaiah 55, 6 says, Seek ye the Lord while he may be found. Call ye upon him while he is near. The spiritual sloth refuses to move with repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Then he or she will end up in an everlasting lake of fire as a result. The second death. But even among professing Christians, we see people self-destruct, making shipwreck, losing a reward, even dying prematurely because they turn into spiritual sloths. 2 Timothy 2.15 says, study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. The spirit-filled believer is a workman. We love learning the Bible, so it's not like work when we study to rightly divide the word of truth. When we learn the truth that we're heeding here, we're actually learning an extra biblical proverb that I've heard over the years. Blessed is the man whose work is his play. Meaning that we enjoy the work so much that it's like we're playing. It's a blessing and not a drudgery. But when you see a lazy, apathetic, backslidden, professing Christian, and it's just a fact, anyone who doesn't love God's word and isn't studying the word and hiding God's word in their heart, memorizing scripture, that person is to some extent, at least, backslidden. And we see such a person who is slothful in his Bible reading, slothful in prayer and witnessing. You're looking at someone on his or her way toward making shipwreck of his or her faith and of their lives. Instead, a Bible believer in word and deed should fall in love with the Word of God and not be slothful in any of the things that we're told to do. 2 Timothy 3, 16, 17 informs us that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
