Hello and welcome to the program. We're looking at discouragement and how we can conquer it. We're going to look today at seven men in the Bible who faced discouragement. If you have faced a little discouragement, or maybe you have faced a lot of discouragement, you are in good company. Moses, for one, had a terrible time with discouragement, to such a point that he prayed to God that he might die. In Numbers 11, verse number one, we read, and the people complained. Verse 10 of chapter 11, we read, Moses heard the people weep throughout their family, every man in the door of his tent. Exodus 15, 24, the people murmured against Moses. Exodus 16, 2, the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron. Exodus 17, 3, the people murmured against Moses. Numbers 14-2, and all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. Numbers 16-41, all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. Well, that can be very discouraging when the people you're trying to help and giving your life to help keep doing that. We read in Numbers 11 verse 14 and 15, Moses said, I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal'st with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight, and let me not see my wretchedness. In Joshua chapter 7 verses 1 through 7, we have the story where the children of Israel had committed a trespass against God and he was not happy with them and he was back. It says that he was very angry with them. Well, they had a battle with AI and some spies went up and they said, oh, we can handle them without any trouble. We'll just send up about 3,000 men. We won't have any problem." Well, they had a problem. In verse 5, it says, the men of Ai smote of them about 30 and 6 men, for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebriarim, and smote them in the going down, whereof the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. What did Joshua do? The Bible says in verse 6, he rent his clothes, and in verse 7, he said, would to God we had been content to dwell on the other side of Jordan. And then we have the story of Elijah had that great mountaintop experience, but in 1 Kings 19 verse 1, Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done and with all how he had slain all the prophets with the sword, then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah saying, so let the gods do to me and more also if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time. Well, when he saw that, it says he arose and went for his life. He's hiding in a cave and he said in verse four, we read here, he requested for himself that he might die and said, it is enough, O Lord, take away my life. And then Job had a lot of problems in physical situation, and in chapter 10 and verse 1 he said, my soul is weary of my life. Jeremiah had so much opposition. We read in Jeremiah 20 and verse 9, I will not make mention of him nor speak any more in his name." And then we have the story of David in 1 Samuel 30 and verse number 4. We read, then, David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep. And then Paul the Apostle in 2nd Corinthians 4 verse 8 and 9, he said he was troubled, he was perplexed, he was persecuted, and he was cast down. That would be David and Paul got the victory right away over their discouragement. You can read about David in 1 Samuel chapter 30. It's a very interesting story. And then Paul the Apostle, I only read a few of the words in 2 Corinthians 4 verse 8 and 9. Let me read the whole verse. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. We are perplexed, but not in despair. Executed, but not forsaken. Cast down, but not destroyed. 1 Corinthians 9.26, Paul said, I therefore so run not as uncertainty, so fight I not as one that beateth the air. 2 Timothy 4.7, he said, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Now actually, none of these men failed. We don't fail unless we quit. Some of them faltered, none of them quit. Moses wanted help, and he got help, and that group turned out to be the Sanhedrin that voted to crucify the Lord. He should not have been so discouraged. You can read the story there. He was having a little pity party. That was his problem. Don't make the same mistake. Paul, he did not falter or fail. Why? Because he said, so fight I, not as one that beateth the air. And he also said at the end of his life, I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. study the life of Paul, study the life of David, and we'll get the secret to overcoming discouragement.
