Philippians chapter four. Well, I kind of feel like I've been repeating myself all today. This is, I've already preached twice and taught Sunday school and it seems to all be kind of running together. But I hope it's not in your ears at least. I'm going to preach on this subject this afternoon. How much do you know about the resurrection. So you keep that thought in mind and let's just have a little fun this afternoon. If you know the answer to these questions raise your hand. How much do you know about the resurrection? Name a book in the Bible that tells about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sophie. John is one of the books that tells about the resurrection. Somebody else tell us about a book that tells us about the resurrection. Oh come on guys. Grayson. Matthew does. Very good Grayson. Name another. Mark. One more. I mean lots of books tell us about the resurrection but one that gives the details as they happen. Tiffany. That would be in. I mean just joking Tiffany. That would be correct. OK. So you get the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, they tell about the resurrection. Remember, raise your hand if you know the answer to these questions. I'm asking these questions because I'm preaching on how much do you know about the resurrection? You feel like you know quite a bit about the resurrection? Don't nod your head, that's a trick question. Do you feel like you know quite a bit about the resurrection? How much do you know about the resurrection? What city did the resurrection take place in? Timothy. Oh, yeah, that's right, Timothy. Jerusalem. The resurrection took place in Jerusalem, okay? Let's see, nine and under for this one. What day of the week did the resurrection take place on? Which day of the week? Nine and unders. Oh, it's a gimme, gimme, gimme. 12 and under. Sophie? No, the resurrection was not on a Friday. Somebody else? Grayson? Sunday, the first day of the week. The first day of the week. Okay, next question. How many days and nights was Jesus in the tomb? How many days and nights was Jesus in the tomb? Who said that? Was that Alice, Miss Purple? She said how many, Alice? Three is correct, Jesus was in the tomb for three days and three nights. Okay, whose tomb was Jesus laid in? Who can tell me that? Claire's raising her hand, both hands. She knows whose tomb Jesus was laid in, of course. Whose tomb was Jesus laid in? Timothy. Whose hand? Tucker's hand was up. Joseph of Amathea, very good. Let's make it a little tougher. Who was the first person to see Jesus after the resurrection? Who was the first person? Grayson. Mary Magdalene, very good, Grayson, you're doing good, you're on a roll here. Okay, this one, this question will be for our homeschool teachers. Homeschool teachers or teachers, raise your hand. Oh, we don't have any. Isn't that something? Okay, this will be for all adults. Do we have any adults? Spell resurrection. All right, Tressa's going. You ready, Tressa? Okay, go ahead. Okay, how many of you think she was right? Raise your hand. How many think she was not right? Raise your hand. Some of you are just such chickens. Good job, Tressa, very good, she spelled it. Sure, she was sitting there looking at it in the Bible, I saw her. That's how you spell resurrection. Now that's just a few questions about the resurrection. You think there could be more about the resurrection than that? You think there could be more about the resurrection than that? Let's read Philippians chapter three, verse five. Philippians, I said chapter four, I meant chapter three. Verse seven, I'm sorry. Philippians chapter three, verse seven. I'll get it right eventually. But what things were gained to me, those I counted loss for Christ, yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but done that I may win Christ. and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Listen to verse 10. That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death, if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect, but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended, but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth into those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. And if anything be otherwise minded, if anything be, and if in anything you be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. So the question was, how much do you know about the resurrection? And could there be more about the resurrection than what little we seem to know? Paul thought so, didn't he? Did you catch that? Verse number 10, Paul says, I'm counting all but lost for Christ, that I may win Christ, that I may be found in Him, not having my own righteousness. He goes on to say that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. He went on to say, I count not myself to have apprehended. Paul believed there was more to the resurrection. He said that I might know the power of His resurrection. Paul is saying I cannot not myself to have apprehended. He's saying I'm not attained. He's saying I'm pressing forward toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. He's simply saying here that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. Paul the Apostle who wrote more books of the Bible than anybody else. Paul the Apostle that was that man that met the Lord on the road to Damascus. Paul the Apostle who did so many great miracles and so many great deeds, says simply here, there's more about the power of His resurrection than I know. And I want to know that, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. So that is the message this afternoon, is the power of the resurrection. And how much do you know about the power of the resurrection? How much do you know in your life about the power of the resurrection? How much power was there? You know, I talked about it a little bit this morning. I'm confident that, you know, you've got a dead body that's been dead for three days and it's already decomposing and rigor mortis has set in and there's blood, but the blood is not flowing. It's become dry. It's drying up. The body there is going back to the dust from which it came. There's no heartbeat. Bacteria, your body's full of bacteria at all times, good bacteria and bad bacteria. and the bacteria have already gone to work. And what you see in the funeral home has been altered professionally by someone who is able to do the touches to make a dead body look presentable. But Jesus had been beaten beyond recognition. His visage was marred more than any man. And there he was in the tomb. And there were the grave clothes. No doubt they were stuck to his body from the blood and the wounds and all the things that he had suffered there. And here he is. that brought him back to life. I don't know how, you know, it's such an amazing thing. How do you even explain it? What power? Now, Paul said in another place, does it, should it seem a thing incredible for you that God should raise the dead? I think he said that to Agrippa. It's a small thing for God and His power for that to happen. Peter, in that great sermon on the day of Pentecost, said it was not possible that he could be holden of death. And so the power was so great that it's hard for us to comprehend, but God had the power. What great power at the resurrection. The power that took this mortal body of His and made it an immortal body. That took the corruptible body and made it an incorruptible body. Think, listen, it's more than just coming back to life, folks. He walks through walls. He's in heaven and he's on the earth. This is not Star Trek, folks. This is reality. What power in this resurrection. No wonder Paul says that I may know him and the power of his resurrection. He eats a piece of honeycomb. And a piece of fish, I think it was, with the disciples there. And then the next thing you know, he's vanished. He's walking on the road to Emmaus, and he kind of falls in with them. And they sit down to eat, and the next thing you know, he's gone. And he's not hiding, seeking under the table either. He's vanished to heaven. Wow, what power. What power. Do you believe that? How much about the resurrection do you know? Do you know that power? Do you know that power? Do you know enough of that power to get you in your Bible? Paul said that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. Listen folks, it's time God's people quit making excuses and say, well, I'm doing the best I can. No, you're not doing the best you can because you need Him. You can't do it anyways. There's the power of His resurrection. There's enough, listen, if there's enough power to make Him to be able to do what He did, there's enough power to keep you from being in bad moods. There's enough power to help you forgive people. There's enough power to help you keep your tongue bit and quiet. There's enough power to help you do whatever you need to do. There's enough power to help you overcome your lust. There's enough power to help you overcome whatever you face in your life, your temper, your bad habits, whatever it is. Paul said that I may know him in the power of his resurrection. What do you know about that power? I'm afraid we don't know much about the power. Power to praise him. Power to find something to praise Him for. Power to pray more than just a repeated prayer. Power to pass out a gospel tract to Hell's angels. Amen. Power to witness. Power to walk across the road and tell somebody about the Lord. Power to remember to pray for the people you told you to pray for. Paul said that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. Can we not get a hold of this thing, folks, that the resurrection was for us? The resurrection wasn't for Him. The resurrection was for us. Remember this morning that our faith is vain without the resurrection. He died, He was buried, and He rose again for us. By His resurrection we're justified that we should walk in newness of life. Most people only know a very, very, very small amount of the power of the resurrection. Paul said, So how can we know more? about the power of His resurrection. Well, number one, we've got to die to ourself like Paul did. Isn't that what Paul said? What things were gained to me, those I counted lost for Christ, we've got to die out to ourself. Yea, Dad, listen, I count all things but lost for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things. You're going to have to do some suffering if you're going to know about the power of the resurrection. You have to suffer to know that power. Suffer the loss of all things. Suffer the loss of what you want to do, so you can do what He wants you to do. Suffer the loss of what you like, so you can do what He likes. Paul said it in another way in Philippians chapter 3. He said, If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitth at the right hand of God. He went on to say, For ye are dead, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. If you would know about the power of His resurrection, you're going to have to die unto yourself. You're going to have to die unto yourself. I said, well, David, how does that work? Well, instead of turning on the television first thing in the morning, pick your Bible up. Instead of picking up your phone first thing in the morning, pick your Bible up. Instead of getting a cup of coffee the first thing in the morning, pick your Bible up if that's what it takes. I didn't say it was necessarily wrong to do any of those things. I'm just saying you've got to die out to yourself if you're going to know about the power of His resurrection. We've not learned much about his suffering. Paul said that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings. Boy, he suffered for us. We ought to be able to suffer a little bit for him, shouldn't we? You know what you ought to do? You ought to just give up whatever it is you need. Give up just for him. That's how you know about the power of His resurrection. Be willing to suffer loss for His honor, for His glory. And then the resurrection is real simple. Two things have to take place for a resurrection to take place. We're talking about knowing the power of His resurrection. First, there has to be a death. We die to ourself. And secondly, there has to be life. Amen? And we rise with Him by faith. Trust that He'll do what He said He'd do. And go and do what you're supposed to do by faith. Die to yourself and do what you're supposed to do. Trust Him. That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings. And so this afternoon, I just want to encourage you, church. There's so much more about the resurrection that we know. We just don't know much. We just don't know very much about the power of His resurrection. The greatest testimony you can have is the power of His resurrection in your life. When people see your life and the change in your life and what the Lord has done in your life, that is the power of His resurrection. And there's so much more than what we know. And we're not going to learn anymore until we learn how to die unto ourself. and consider all things but loss, that we might win Christ, that we might know Him and the power of His resurrection. So I hope that encourages you today. It's kind of like this electrical power in here. You know, I can believe that there's power running from Kenny Forks, whatever you call the area where they send out the juice, if you will, down the lines, through the transformers, into this building. But if I don't have the faith to flip the switch, it's not going to do me any good, amen? And so as Christians, we've got to trust God by faith and just say, here we go. I'm gonna do what you want me to do. Wherever He leads, I'll go. And I hope that you, before this week's over, will know more about the power of His resurrection, because that's the way we're supposed to be living and walking in newness of life. Let's bow our heads for prayer this evening. Lord, I thank You, God, for Your Word. I thank you, God, for the blessings of being in the house of God today, for the good day, for the good crowds we've had. Thank you for the songs we've heard and the things we've been blessed to hear. I pray, God, you give us a good rest of the day. Bless the remainder of this service. It's my prayers in Jesus' name that I ask. Amen.
