to his people. He has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and reverend is his name. Let's pray. Father, to even address you should in some measure bring a trembling in our hearts when we know the God with whom we have to do our creator. And we bow before you, knowing that we are not worthy of ourselves of the least of your mercies, or to even be able to ask anything. Lord, we're so thankful. that you sent your only begotten son into this world, the Lord Jesus Christ, whereby we can approach your throne, not of judgment, but of mercy, throne of grace, to obtain grace to help in our time of need. Lord, we come as we deal with this unfathomable subject, and so important for us as your children especially, We pray God that you would help us that we may grasp hold of the meaning of this text and how it is applicable in our lives and that we may be given grace to be in harmony with it in our lives, in our prayer life and so much of our life as we serve you in this pilgrim pathway that you have put us on. We ask that you would cleanse us from all unrighteousness through the blood of Jesus Christ, that this prayer be not hindered, that you would even save the lost who are without Christ at this point in their lives, and that they may see what a great and wonderful God we have in you. We pray that you would hear us now stir our hearts up to be in awe and wonder of who you are. We pray these things in the blessed name of our Lord Jesus Christ and for his sake, amen. Holy and reverend, is his name. I love it when you can put a title that has the very words of God. It doesn't always work out that way, but this time it did. And I wondered, Lord, is this what you want me to preach? I just preached on he who is holy. And I picked up on trying to get away from it, and nothing would click but this. So the Lord has his reasons and we don't always know exactly why. We may not even all together know. When I get done I may not still know all together what that means and maybe in the eternal future we will. You know, there are times that I have, and here recently it happened, when, I won't say exactly who it was, because we invited them to church, maybe they'll come, but anyway, they were saying about doing some paperwork, and they knew I was a pastor, and so she wrote down, Reverend, Andy Proctor. I said, no, no, no, not that's not a name for me. That's that's only reserved for God. And you know, try to be sweet about it, you know, because there's so much ignorance today concerning the Word of God. In fact, we find that one last song we sang, it had Reverend as one of the people who wrote it or whatever, and I'm like, why would that be in there? But anyway, there's just a lot of ignorance about the scriptures. Sometimes it's the fault, and I say most of the time, the fault of the pulpit, those who fill the pulpit. Sometimes it's because, you know, people have not failed to study and search the scriptures, or they've forgotten, maybe thought, I'm gonna look into that, and they've forgotten, or whatever the case might be. And so, but this verse is intimately connected to Exodus chapter 20, and verse 7 that we have behind my back here that is the only part of it, but I'll read the verse in verse 7 of Exodus chapter 20. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Now, it is a shame that people don't understand that, too. What does it mean to take God's name in vain? It means to flippantly use it, and sometimes to feel word. You know, sometimes preachers can be bad about that and not even realize it. to fill in a pause or you're getting your thoughts together and so you throw out God's name, you don't use God's name like that. We ought to use it very reverently and respectfully. And so we want to do it, when you do something that's in vain, there's no real purpose to it. When we use God's name, it should be with a purpose, a holy purpose. And so that's what it means in a nutshell. But what value does the Almighty God put upon his name? Well, and the use of it. That's the thing we want to look at. Scripture uses a variety of all kinds of names of God. There's so many, I don't have time to deal with all of them, but You know, they are all different and deep meanings. But the overall holiness of God requires that we speak his name with reverence and purpose. So, a name speaks of one's reputation. You've heard of the expression, he's got a good name in the community. It speaks of that person's character. and their reputation. In other words, it's important to have a good name. And it is a, it speaks of the character of God, his name. And so it's important that we use it in a way that would magnify and glorify his person, his name. When people, I mean, a name, you know, we have in the Bible, we, for several names in the Bible, we see of God, we begin there in Genesis chapter 1. We have the Hebrew word Elohim. which speaks of really the Trinity. And let us make God in our own image, Genesis 126. So we see the Trinity already being brought out, even in the very first chapter. I was a little disturbed when I read the other day about 20 to 30% of people who are professing Christians don't believe in the Trinity. And I'm like, what in the world? That's just pathetic and yet that's what we have in our culture today. But we see that He is Elohim. He is the God of power. He is so powerful that in Genesis chapter 1, He just simply spoke this world into existence. That is power. And he is the creator. And as our brother mentioned this morning in the Bible school, that he is the I am. He is the ever, always existing one, the everlasting God. From everlasting to everlasting, the Bible says, thou art God. That is a God that we have to do with. We all do. I mean, if you're a lost person, in Him, you have life and breath, and we have our being. Every good and perfect gift comes from this God to you, whether you're saved or unsaved. But we who are saved have a special blessing. and that we are his children. And there may be some, I don't like that song, it says a child of hell. A child of God is always a child of God. And I know sometimes people say things that they had not really thought it through. But once you're a child of God and God's eternal plan and predestination, you always are. And So there may be some who we don't know were God's children, but maybe in time it will be revealed that indeed they are. Nothing, sadly, in our culture is sacred. You've heard that, nothing's sacred anymore. And there's no respect for people, and definitely not God. And the problem is, partly stems from what is recorded in Psalms chapter 50 and verse 21. These things thou hast done, and I kept silent. Thou thoughtest that I, that is God, was altogether such and one as thyself. but I will reprove thee and set them in order before thine eyes. People think that God just, he's just a man upstairs is the kind of blasphemous terminology that the world uses. And so they don't understand God like they should. The God of Holy Scripture is not like the pagan God. That really goes back to paganism. The pagan gods were petty, sniveling, wannabe deities, like man, full of envy and immorality and inconsistency and so forth. I don't know why people want to go back to paganism. I don't want that kind of God. That's not the kind of God I want. You can't depend on that kind of God. We've lost sight of the glory and the grandeur of God Almighty in our day. And as a result, the perception of God is a little guy with a little g. And so it's no wonder that he is no better than a mere man that can be manipulated by others. That is no God that can be depended on and is utterly useless. So it's no wonder that people fall prey to atheism when they see a God like that being presented before their eyes. Or at the very least, what I would call practical atheism. That is, not that it's practical, but that in practice they act like God doesn't exist. So, the psalm begins in Psalms 111, I like the way it begins. In verse one, praise ye the Lord. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, my whole being in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation. I'm not ashamed of it. I'll do it publicly. That's the attitude of every child of God. that we're not ashamed of this God. Now, if I was a pagan and I worshiped pagan gods, I'd be ashamed to be singing and praising such things. But some imaginary things, that's all they are. But praise a God who made heaven and earth nothing to be ashamed of at all. This praise speaks of the adoration of God And that fits our text. For we must adore Him before we can really rightly address Him by name. We must have this attitude, this mindset of adoration that we have toward God. And so, as we look at this, I've read one book you ought to get if you don't have it already. Of course, you can probably get it on a Bible program. is, as far as studying the Psalms, is Spurgeon's Treasury of David. That's a wonderful commentary on the book of Psalms. And Spurgeon says this in terms of this passage, or part of what he says. He says, well may he say this, the whole name or character of God is worthy of profoundest or holy, it ought not to be spoken without solemn thought, and never heard without profound homage. I thought that was very well put. But we want to begin very simply in this outline. First of all, as we note in the title, his name is holy. Now, we talked about he who is holy, but I didn't really get into the name, his name being holy this past Lord's Day. So we may have heard maybe somebody, let's just think of those who play soccer over here, play soccer. You might maybe have heard of some great soccer player. And this great soccer player, somebody might say, this guy or this gal is so good, their middle name is soccer. And so that identifies them as being a great soccer player. Well, God's name is holy. He's not only holy, his name is holy. That's how greatly holy that he is. That defines him. The Greek, or the Hebrew word in this case, in our text, in Psalm 111, verse 9, is the Hebrew word kadosh. And it means, where's that word? Sacred. Set apart. Of course, holy. And when we think of set apart, I think of set above. Thou art exalted above all gods, the scriptures tell us. I like some of the passages that refer to this. I was surprised how many times that we have in the Bible, I don't have all of them listed, but how many times that it mentions about God's holy name. Notice there first in Psalms 33 and verse 21. And notice the reasons behind it. For, you know, it's one thing to just know, okay, God's name is holy, but why? What kind of connection can we make to render our lips to praise his holy name? Well, it says, for our hearts shall rejoice in him. To be done. because we have trusted in His holy and unholy name. You know, holy is, you speak of purity. Can you imagine, or you imagine trusting in a polluted, corrupted, filthy name? That's what all the other gods are. His name is holy, it's perfect. And then we find in Psalms 103 verse one, bless the Lord, oh my soul. Here we go, going back again, I find it interesting in the way God has arranged this, talking about heart religion, from our hearts. It's one thing to sing a song, But it's another thing to make a melody in our hearts to the Lord in regards in this subject of His holiness. Notice there in Psalms 103 verse one, bless the Lord over my soul, all that is within me. Bless His holy name. Every bit and fiber of my being to bless His holy name. That's what he deserves anyway, isn't it? Now our all and that is, you know, it's amazing. That's what he deserves. That's what we should do. And yet God is such a generous giving God that he blesses you. in the doing of it. And like, you know, let's just say you were at a point in time when you weren't doing it and then you're doing it and you are just abundantly blessed more than you could ever ask for or think or imagine. That's the God that we serve. And then in Psalms 105 verse three, glory ye in His holy name. You can glory in it. You can brag about it. You can't brag about us. For one thing, we do a lot of things we shouldn't. And for another thing, if we do anything good, God's gonna give us the ability to do it. So we glory in His name, His holy name. He identifies as being holy. And then we find once more in Psalms 106 and verse 47, another element of worship. Save us, O Lord our God, gather us from among the heathen to give thanks unto thy holy name and to triumph in thy praise. Oh, I wish I was in heaven. I would love to have heaven on earth right now. Well, you know what? It's going to be a place of thanksgiving, not a place of murmuring, complaining, and being down in the mouth. We will be thanking His holy name. I love that. And then from Psalm 145 verse 21, my mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. All flesh forever and ever. That is the extent in which we are to bless his holy name. And then we find Isaiah in the Prophets there in chapter 57 verse 15. For thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, what does it say? Whose name is holy. This lofty, exalted, high, God, His name is holy. I dwell in the high and holy place. With Him also there is a contrite and humble spirit to receive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. And that's something else, isn't it? The one who is higher than the highest will what? He's with those who are down low. That is, just blows our mind. Humanly, we wouldn't concede that on our own. But if we would catch a gleam of glory bright as the song says, we must humble ourselves before our God, whose name is holy. Mary said in Luke 149 in the New Testament, he that is mighty hath done to me great things, and holy is his name. So remember, his name is holy. But secondly, his name is reverend. This is one you don't hear a lot about. For one thing, You don't find it in any of the modern versions that I know of. I haven't seen all of them. There's so many of them nowadays I can't keep track of them all, which I think is kind of strange. But the Hebrew word yara is a word that means feared, afraid, terrible. dreadful, reverend, fearful, and you thought, wow, that is not what you think. Well, as a lot of times you have to look a little deeper into the words and tenses and so forth and how it's used in this particular case, it is more along the lines of to be fearful, to be dreadful. His name is fearful. His name is dreadful. His name, we could say, is awful. Now, when we think of awful, we think something horrible. But think of the word awe, when you stand in awe, or awesome. Anywhere else in the Bible, if you look it up, Strong's Concordance, you will find the same Hebrew word used in other places. And let me just point out a few here. In Deuteronomy 28 and verse 58. If thou wilt not observe to do, let me just turn over there real quick to get the context. speaking to the children of Israel in Deuteronomy chapter 28, and let's notice there in verse 58, where it says, if thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear his glorious and fearful, same word as reverend, fearful name, the Lord thy God, then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, full of wonder, and the plagues of thy seed, and even thy great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance, and he goes on to say, you know, if you don't, Do this and fear this glorious and fearful, reverent name of the Lord thy God. So, it is a name that should bring a healthy fear. I have to say this all the time because a lot of people get the idea, oh, I'm supposed to be scared of God and not even want to go to Him in prayer. I'm going to run away from Him like Adam, you know, or like so many people when they see a preacher preaching, you know, they'll go the other way, the other side of the street or whatever. No, no, no, that's not what it means. It means a reverence. a respect and honor unto Him. You know, in some ways, we can come boldly before the throne of grace as God's people, but also there is a certain fear and trembling as we serve God. And we come before Him knowing we're not worthy, knowing that we are still sinners, though we're saved by grace, there is that element there in our hearts. It goes on another passage that deals with that same Hebrew word, translated reverend, in Psalms 99 verse 3. Let them praise thy great and terrible. That's that same word. Name, for it is holy. So we see reverend, the same Hebrew word, and holy, speaking of God's name again. Now, There is a sense, when you think of, you know, God, He is terrifying in one sense, because of who He is and what He can do. Even as a child of God, you know, when we, when children, you know, when I did something wrong, and I knew that it was wrong and it was pretty bad, I was trembling, I was terrified because I knew I was going to get it. Now, I didn't understand it then, but it was for my good, you see. And so there is that element that I knew that my parents loved me, but I didn't, you know, I didn't enjoy getting whipped, so I tried to avoid them all I can. Same kind of idea. It's scary, though, when we think about this great name of God being holy and reverend, that there are some in certain denominations, as we referred to a while ago, that refer to their ministers as reverend. And Catholicism goes even further in titles like the most right reverend or the most holy reverend. Well, first of all, God is the most of anything good. There's nobody that's above him. And so it is frightening that people would use that name for themselves when God is the only one whose name is holy and reverend. And the same holds true as we see Jesus mentioning there in Matthew chapter 23 and verse 9. And call no man your father upon the earth, for one is your father which is in heaven. In other words, it doesn't mean you can't call your dad father. It just simply means that I can never give a title to someone of reverence to a person. That's why I do not agree with Catholicism's use of their priests and calling them Father so and so. It's blasphemous, it's unbiblical, and dishonoring to God. We should never be guilty of using one of God's titles or descriptions or names when addressing those who are seeking to serve him. So with that in mind, I want to spend the rest of this message on His name is to be revered. And we spent a lot of time on He is holy last time. Now I want to spend more time on His name is to be revered. We should not swear by His name or use it irreverently or in thoughtless praise. Just because, okay, it's time to get up, you know, we can be guilty of being zombie-like in our worship and say, okay, I get up, I hymn, you know, we get in a routine or a rut. And, okay, it's time to do that and we just do it like good zombies or robots and we are not thinking about what we're singing. Just like Paul said, to sing with understanding to the church of Corinth. We got to, if we're going to revere his name, we must use it with purpose and with praise. You know, if I would use my dog's name, Bruno, and I used it in vain, or I made fun of his name, well, he wouldn't know any better. He wouldn't feel bad about it. He just, because he can't understand what I'm saying. But if that same thing happened to us, where our name is ridiculed and made fun of and disrespected, well, it's hurtful, isn't it? It's wrong. Well, why is that? Because we are created in the image of God. God is to, His name is to be reverence. That's part of the reason why we should honor all men, because we are all created in the image of God. God's name is to be revered, respected, and honored, and we need to also be careful of what is called, in English grammar, teaching, English and grammar and all that, there's a word called euphemisms. Those things that are put in substitute of other words. Now for the sake of understanding what I'm saying, people say words like gosh or golly. Those are words that are euphemisms to put in a place of God. We shouldn't do that. We shouldn't do that. And I didn't know this until I was studying this further, but you know, the Holy Spirit, people use in the place of that, holy smoke or holy smoke. is a use of medicine referring to the Holy Spirit, but not really addressing, but they want to use something close to it. We should never do things like that. We, um, human slang typically leans toward the gutter. And so, uh, words like geez and things like that, those are all words that we should avoid because we're trampling on holy ground here. The bottom line is we need to be careful with our speech. As Jesus pointed out in Matthew 12, 36 through 37, like James talks about there in James chapter 3, we've got to tame the tongue. Find there in Psalms 34, 13, keep thy tongue from evil. Word keep means to guard. Guard your tongue from evil. But why do we regard His name in this way and praise Him? Well, I want us to turn back, if you haven't, if you're not already still there, in Psalms 111. In verse 2. Why is it? Looking at the context of the psalm. The works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. His works, His creation where He just simply with the divine fiat spoke and the universe was created. And then we find in verse three, his work is honorable. Remember he said he created everything and it was good. It was honorable and glorious and his righteousness endureth forever. That's why we praise him. That's why we reverence him. And then in Psalms 111 verse 4, He hath made His wonderful works to be remembered, not apart from Him, but in connection with Him. The Lord is gracious and full of compassion. Look at this planet. Look at the rest of the planets that we even know about. Did you know this planet is the only planet where we could survive? You know, in terms of without any artificial kind of anything? What does it say there? He is gracious and full of compassion. He is worthy of our reverence. And then we find there in chapter 111 verse 5 through 6. He hath given him meat unto them that fear him. He will ever be mindful of his covenant. So here we have more unto those who are his children, those who are saved, that he's gonna keep his covenant. He's not gonna break his promises. He has showed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen. What does that mean? It means the meat shall inherit the earth, like Jesus promised. And the Beatitudes. And verses seven through eight, the works of his hands are verity or truth and judgment. All his commandments are sure. They stand fast forever and ever and are done in truth and uprightness. That's why we reverence him and we address him as the God whose name is holy and reverend. and then because of his redemption. Notice in verse 9 of our text, he sent redemption unto his people. That is, first of all, God sovereignly sent it. He sent it because otherwise it wouldn't happen. We couldn't conjure it up, we couldn't manufacture it, any kind of redemption, God sovereignly sent it. this redemption. In fact, He sent the Redeemer. God gave His only begotten Son that whosoever would believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. He sent the Redeemer and the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, paid the price of redemption to purchase His people with His own blood. Don't you respect somebody who gives all that they can to be a blessing to you, that garners respect. And God has done so much more, especially for the children of God, than any person. He's worthy of our reverence. And it goes on, he commanded his covenant forever. This is not something that's here and gone tomorrow, but it's something that is everlasting, holy and reverend is his name. And then because we find in the 10th verse of Psalm 111, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. We could put the reverence of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That's, the Bible talks about there's no fear of God before their eyes. They don't even want to entertain it because it's distasteful. I don't like hearing about that. But we need to hear about that, you see. And don't just diss it, investigate it, you know, for yourself. You see it over and over in the Word of God. And if it wasn't needed, God wouldn't put it in His Word. And so sometimes we just gotta say, Lord, I'm having a hard time with this. Help me to understand it. Or maybe talk to another brother or sister in Christ about it. We got so many helps today. I just mentioned the commentary. There's so many helps today available to people all over. And used to be it cost them some money to get those things. But nowadays, you can just go online and it's free. We got all these things, and yet, how much are we accessing those resources that God has sovereignly put right at our fingertips? The fear of the Lord to begin with. A good understanding have all they that do His commandments. Now that, we were talking about the other day about those who have the gift of discernment. You know, they're able to discern good and evil because they're doing it. They're doing the Word. You know, by reason of use. They have the sense of exercise to discern both good and evil. We can understand and appreciate and apply the truth of the fact that holy and reverend is his name. We revere God's name when we obey God in godly fear. Malachi chapter two. And verse five says, my covenant is with him of life and peace. And I give them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me and was afraid before my name. You want life and peace? These are the ingredients for that. Now, the world might think, oh, you're crazy. I would have said that before God saved me. I realize it's true. I found out by, not only by studying and by, but by experience, that is true. Luke chapter six and verse 46 says, Jesus is saying, and why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Why do you use my name? calling me Lord, the Sovereign, the King, the God, the Creator, and then you don't even do what I tell you. That's blasphemous. You know, the Jews will not even say the name Jehovah or Yahweh. There's only, you know, we put those vowels in there as English-speaking people. But there's only three letters, no vowels. Now, the scribes were afraid, and I think this was not something they needed to worry about in one sense, but they were afraid that if they would say God's name, that they might use it in vain. Well, we know that's not true because God has it in His Word and we're supposed to read His Word and preach His Word. So, but the idea is that they had a reverence for his name. And so, they wouldn't even, in fact, they would, before they wrote his name, they would, speaking of Yahweh and Jehovah, they would clean the writing instrument off to make sure that when they wrote it, it wouldn't be contaminated or corrupted. And then after they got done, they did the same thing. So they were really concerned about not using God's name in vain or in any way polluting or profaning His holy, reverend name. In fact, I thought it was interesting in studying this, too, that the Greeks, when they would swear by their little g-god Jupiter, they wouldn't even use his name. I don't know how they did that, but anyway, that's what they said. The Mohammedans, they'll kill you if you profane or blaspheme the name of their little g-god Allah. or even their prophet, Muhammad. They're serious about it. But we need to be more serious than all them because we have the truth and the living God. Amen. Who's the savior and the creator. Our God is so much more precious. He deserves to be reverenced, and respected, and godly feared. Ezekiel 39 talks about one day children are never not going to pollute his name anymore. One day we'll be in a place, if you're a child of God, where there is no profaning of the name of our great God. You know, there are, as the psalmist in Psalms 20, verse seven says, some trust in chariots and some in churches, but we will remember the name of the Lord, our God. Because Jesus, speaking of Jesus in Matthew 12, 21, and in his name shall the Gentiles trust. in His name, because that speaks of His identity, of who He is. Jesus has been given, in Philippians chapter 2 and verse 9, a name above every name, so much so that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father. And I encourage you to do the same. May God's all-powerful sovereign grace move in your heart so much that you see how great our God is and bow down and humble yourself before him and cry out to him for mercy like the publican did as he saw himself as a sinner and they saw God is just so far, you're so far above me, you could just take my life in a split second. God saves people who are humbled before him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. And how you do that? Again, grace, God has to give you grace to be able to call the whosoever, doesn't mean everybody's going to, it means his people, his children, as mentioned in our text, shall call upon and will be saved from sin. And all the consequences of that sin, when that, like our brother was talking about in Bible school hour, They saw the mountain, Mount Sinai, was burning and smoking and it was fearful to behold as they recognized God was there in His special presence. And when we think about the law, that's all we can think about. But when you think about Jesus Christ who fulfilled the law in the place of sinners, there is joy in our hearts. May God help you to behold the Lamb of God who stood or hung on the cross in the place of sinners. That's my prayer. Thank you for your attention. Dearly Father, I thank you for allowing us to come to you once again in prayer. Thank you for your word we've heard, Lord, which is taken upon our lives and heart. Help us, dear God, to be careful not to take your name in vain, Lord, and to help us to forever see you, Lord, and to respect you as you're worthy of. Help us, dear God, to serve you in spirit and in truth, with love and sincerity. We thank you for each and every one here this morning, Lord, be it with those that are not, that you're bringing them back at that point in time. Be it with Brother Ronnie, Lord, as he's not feeling well with a sinus headache. We touch and heal him, bring him to a full measure of health. Be with his niece as well, Lord, the health issues that she has, and especially if she's not saved, save her soul, Lord. Open her eyes and her heart with truth, and bless your word. We thank you, dear God, for just traveling mercy. We thank you for your love and your mercy and your kindness. Lord, help us as we continue to serve you this day, Lord, and to worship you. Help us to come together in fellowship and unity with one another. Help us, dear God, to glorify your holy name. Bless the food we're about to eat, nourish our bodies, bless the hands of prayer for us. Just help us, dear God, to acknowledge you in all of our ways. Bless the services this afternoon, Lord, and be with Brother Andy as he speaks, and help us to be attentive, Lord, deliver us from the worldly distractions, Lord, and thoughts that you would help us to focus completely on you. Open our ears to hear your word and our hearts to receive it.
