Honoring Marriage

The topic before us is as timely today as it was in the first century when the Hebrew writer penned these words. In fact, it is even more urgent today that we learn to honor marriage, to keep our beds clean, and to fear the judgment of the living God. Again, remember the wider context: all of this has to be driven by the character of God the consuming fire, and by His work for us in Christ — bringing us to the New Jerusalem and gathering us with His people rather than sweeping us away with sinners. Are you on Mt. Zion today? Are you worshiping with reverence and awe for the God who has given you such a great salvation? If so, then look to your marriage. Look to your attitude toward all marriages: do you honor them? Specifically, do you honor them through the virtue of chastity? Do you fear the judgment of God more than you enjoy the titillation of the flesh? The Hebrew writer tells us that, for us as Christians, there is only one right answer to these questions. Honoring marriage with God-fearing chastity is a key part of acceptable worship.
